Video
So YouTube is apparently learning what I’m interested in (which is a very broad area, so well done, YouTube!). It suggested this to me tonight, and it is so great! Visually, musically, and culturally. I had to hang on a moment and resist the urge to be overwhelmed by the fact that these gorgeous women start the video by singing “Da diddle dee dee diddle dee da” which I though only Irish drinking songs every said! But am I ever glad I hung on a moment because I really loved the video. It’s like a lovely little film.
I believe the instrument the beautiful singer is playing is a panduri - a three-stringed traditional instrument (in the lute family) from Georgia.
There was what seemed a very useful YouTube comment about the plot and words - I can’t speak to its accuracy but for what it is worth, it seemed very interesting, and I will quote it after the cut.
“Mtielebi (translates as highlanders. mtieli is a singular form) is a collective name of people who live in highlands. This includes Mokhevians, Pshavelians, Tushetians and others. The name of song is The Game of highlanders. I'll try to give a rough translation of the lyrics. So, basically this song is a medley. In the first part, a woman asks a shepherd: Are you not tired of being in mountains, do you not miss the valley? Do you not miss a caress of a beautiful woman, or talking to her? The guy replies that he's not bored of mountains and that for a shepherd, who stands on Borbalo (it's a mountain) caress of a woman is a wind. The second part at 1:51 : the mokhevian woman, Tina, why are you still single as most girls of your age have already got married? Long hair and black eyes suit The mokhevian woman. The third part at 2:54 (repeats 3 times): I've been watching you from Bakhtrioni (it's a fortress) , a beautiful Tushetian woman”
