ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistani police Monday fired tear gas canisters at supporters of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan to stop them from entering the capital, where they hoped to stage a sit-in to demand his release, officials said.
The firing of tear gas came shortly after demonstrators — who traveled 150 kilometers (93 miles) from the restive northwest — began arriving and gathering near Islamabad. They defied a lockdown, previous tear gas and widespread arrests despite a ban on rallies in the city.
The development came a day after the leadership of Khan’s party went ahead with the “long march” even as Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko arrived for a three-day visit. He was received at an airport near the capital by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday evening.
Authorities said at least one police officer was killed and several officers and demonstrators were injured in clashes. The marchers appeared determined to enter Islamabad, where the lockdown, which has been in place for two days, has disrupted daily life.
The government was in talks with Khan's party to avoid any further violence, officials said.
Khan, who has been in jail for over a year and faces more than 150 criminal cases, remains popular. His party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, or PTI, says the cases are politically motivated.
A convoy of vehicles carrying protesters was expected to enter the capital Monday night. Security officials say they expect between 9,000 and 11,000 demonstrators, while the PTI says the number will be much higher.
Video on social media showed Khan supporters donning gas masks and protective goggles.
Travel between Islamabad and other cities has become nearly impossible. Ambulances and cars were seen turning back from areas along the key Grand Trunk Road highway in Punjab province, where shipping containers were used to block roads.
Video circulating online showed some protesters operating heavy machinery to remove the containers.
“We are determined, and we will reach Islamabad, though police are using tear gas to stop our march,” PTI senior leader Kamran Bangash told The Associated Press. “We will overcome all hurdles one by one, and our supporters are removing shipping containers from roads."
Bangash also said Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, who was recently released on bail in a graft case, will lead the march along with Ali Amin Gandapur, the chief minister in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where Khan’s party remains in power.
Earlier, almost 50 kilometers (30 miles) from Islamabad, Bibi, wearing a white head-to-toe burqa, addressed protesters while sitting in a truck, urging them to remain determined to achieve their goal and free Khan. She then chanted, “God is great” and left.
Khan’s main political opponent, Sharif, heads the current government.
Sharif’s spokesperson, Attaullah Tarar, said on Sunday that whenever any high-profile foreign delegation comes to Pakistan, the PTI “begins the politics of long marches and onslaught on Islamabad to harm the economy.”
Some economists say protests cause billions of rupees in damages to the country's fragile economy.
Protesters on Sunday night burned trees as police fired tear gas to disperse the crowds. Khan supporters retaliated by using slingshots and pelting security personnel with rocks.
In a bid to foil the protest, police have arrested more than 4,000 Khan supporters since Friday and suspended mobile and internet services “in areas with security concerns,” which the PTI said affected its call on social media for a protest. On Thursday, a court prohibited rallies in the capital and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said anyone violating the ban would be arrested.
Authorities say only courts can order the release of Khan, who was ousted in 2022 through a no-confidence vote in Parliament. He has been imprisoned since his first conviction in a graft case, in August 2023.
Khan has been sentenced in several cases. His convictions were later overturned on appeal but he cannot be freed due to other pending cases against him.

[ad_1] Work is still going on at the Gaddafi Stadium. On a day when the newly-renovated Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore was inaugurated by the Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the installation of the giant screens at the National stadium in Karachi drew some flak from the International Cricket Council. The ICC has raised concerns with the PCB regarding the placement of two large screens, which can obstruct the clear view for several fans. The governing body of world cricket is believed to have reprimanded the PCB for not properly considering seating arrangements when installing the screens, leading to dissatisfaction among ticket holders. Incidentally, multiple deadlines were missed by the authorities before they were able to complete the renovation work at the Gaddafi Stadium. Among the dignitaries present on the occasion were Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, and various other officials. The atmosphere was electrifying as the large turnout was presented with a light and sound show followed by fireworks towards the end. The highlight of the inauguration ceremony was the unveiling of the Pakistan cricket team’s new jersey for the upcoming Champions Trophy. Folk singer Arif Lohar, along with Aima Baig and Ali Zafar, performed to the iconic tune, “Dil, Dil Pakistan,” further fuelling the excitement among the home fans. PCB Chairman, Naqvi, expressed hope that the Pakistan team would not only win the Champions Trophy, but also defeat their arch-rivals India, in the highly-anticipated match scheduled to take place in Dubai. He also celebrated the return of international cricket to Pakistan, especially after a 29-year absence from hosting major events like the Champions Trophy. The Gaddafi Stadium is set to host several matches, including the second semi-final of the Champions Trophy, and potentially the final, depending on India’s qualification. The stadium will also be the venue for the opening fixture of a tri-nation series between Pakistan and New Zealand, on February 9, followed by a match between South Africa and New Zealand on February 10. Earlier in the day, PCB Chairman hosted a luncheon for the 15,000 labourers who worked tirelessly to upgrade the stadium. This gesture highlighted the importance of their contribution to the project’s success. Surprisingly, people from Pakistan owned the second most properties in Dubai after people from another country. These properties belonged to politicians, government workers, and military people. They owned 23,000 properties that altogether were worth $12.5 billion!
2️⃣What are the details revealed?🧐 Lots of important people from Pakistan are mentioned in this report:

There are also mentions of retired Army and Air Force officials, 4 members of the National Assembly, and around 6 members of the Provincial Assembly who own property in Dubai!
3️⃣Interestingly:😲 - Pakistan is desperately struggling to secure another long-term loan with the International Monetary Fund! - The country is barely hanging on and one misstep away from total economic collapse! - 40% of its citizens are below the poverty line and over 20% are undernourished!! - Pakistani lawmaker Syed Mustafa Kamal recently went on a rant in the Sindh parliament where he spoke of how India went to the moon but Karachi lacked drinking water and children were dying in open gutters!! 4️⃣Is there hope for Pakistan?❓ Follow Jobaaj Stories (the media arm of Jobaaj.com Group for more)

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Supporters seeking the release of imprisoned Pakistani former Prime Minister Imran Khan broke through a ring of shipping containers blocking off the capital on Tuesday, and battled security forces despite a government threat to respond with gunfire. Six people have died in the violence.
Thousands of security forces have poured into central Islamabad in an attempt to quell protests in support of Khan that have gripped the capital and its surrounding areas since Sunday. The popular politician has been in jail for over a year and faces more than 150 criminal cases that his party says are politically motivated.
Authorities say only courts can order the release of Khan, who was ousted in 2022 through a no-confidence vote in Parliament. He has been imprisoned since his first conviction in a graft case in August 2023.
On Tuesday, Pakistan’s army took control of D-Chowk, a large square in downtown Islamabad’s Red Zone, which houses key government buildings and where visiting Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko is staying. Paramilitary rangers and police were also out in force and some fired warning shots into the air.
Still, Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, who is leading the protests, made slow progress toward the square in a heavily guarded convoy, surrounded by well-wishers.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi threatened that security forces would respond with live fire if protesters fired weapons at them.
“We have now allowed police to take any decision according to the situation,” Naqvi said later while visiting the square.
Protester Shahzor Ali said people were on the streets because Khan had called for them to be there. “We will stay here until Khan is among us. He will decide what to do next,” Ali said.
“If they again fire bullets, the bullet will be responded with the bullet,” he said.
Protester Fareeda Bibi, who is not related to Khan’s wife, said people have suffered greatly for the last two years.
“We have really suffered for the last two years, whether it is economically, politically or socially. We have been ruined. I have not seen such a Pakistan in my life,” she said.
Police so far have used tear gas in an attempt to disperse the crowds. The dead include four members of the security services and one civilian who were killed when a vehicle rammed them on a street overnight into Tuesday. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif denounced the attack, saying an “anarchist group” was deliberately targeting law enforcement personnel. There was no claim of responsibility for the ramming. A police officer died separately.
Scores of people have also been injured, including journalists who were attacked by demonstrators. Dozens of Khan supporters beat a videographer covering the protest for The Associated Press and took his camera. He sustained head injuries and was treated in a hospital.
Pakistani media have mostly stopped filming and photographing the rally, instead focusing on the security measures and the city’s deserted streets.
By Tuesday afternoon, fresh waves of protesters made their way unopposed to their final destination in the Red Zone. Most demonstrators had the flag of Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, around their shoulders or wore its tricolors on accessories.
Naqvi said Khan’s party rejected a government offer to rally on the outskirts of the city.
Information Minister Atta Tarar warned there would be a severe government reaction to the violence. He said the government did not want Bushra Bibi to achieve her goal of freeing Khan. “She wants bodies falling to the ground. She wants bloodshed,” he said.
In a bid to foil the unrest, police have arrested more than 4,000 Khan supporters since Friday and suspended mobile and internet services in some parts of the country and messaging platforms were also experiencing severe disruption in the capital.
Khan’s party relies heavily on social media to demand Khan’s release and uses messaging platforms such as WhatsApp to share information, including details of events. The X platform, which is banned in Pakistan, is no longer accessible, even with a VPN.
On Thursday, a court prohibited rallies in the capital and Naqvi said anyone violating the ban would be arrested. Travel between Islamabad and other cities has become nearly impossible because of shipping containers blocking the roads. All educational institutions remain closed.
Pakistan's Stock Exchange lost more than $1.7 billion Tuesday due to rising political tensions, according to economist Mohammed Sohail from Topline Securities.
