both my grandfather and i are night owls, except that he's the traditional in-bed-by-12 person and my night extends to 6 in the morning. so i was making a cup of tea to drink while i swam through my eternal syllabus later this night, while i blasted kishore kumar and mohammad rafi on my phone's music player, and we're both singing along to the songs, when he's finally done and prepares to retire to bed. now one thing about my grandfather is that the job he retired from three decades ago required him to converse in both English and Hindi quite frequently. he misses all aspects of that job, including the language switching parts, so he sometimes talks to me in those languages. now, his English is superb, accented and everything, due to studying it from a British era metropolitan high school, but his Hindi's just the opposite. so he's going to his room, and tells me “bhago yahan se, jaldi upar chadh jao” and then we're both laughing at the outcome of his sentence. it's in that moment i realised i'll miss this, and that i don't have a lot of time left with him. so i'm leaving this little anecdote here to keep him in my memory.
