#if only I could become rich and move out of the us or something somehow.. please overseas followers let me come live in your basement#much in the same fashion as some wealthy family in some novel set in the 1800s or something who has a decrepit hermit cousin#that they allow to live on their grand estate just because they feel sorry for them and they mostly keep to themselves and never cause#any issue or anything. Like 'oh thats just Cousin Edmind. you may see him wandering the halls. dont mind him. he doesnt come out#of his quarters very much. dear papa has taken pity on his frail soul and pallid complexion..' so on and so forth#(just joking) (mostly) (...unless)#Really I just nEED to get my game done. I feel like even if everything implodes and I perish in a gutter of some preventable disease#that I was never aware of because the cdc has been dismantled and masks have been banned and my healthcare has been removed then#at LEAST if I can get my game and my worldbulilding videos all done then it will be like.. well okay at least I got the ideas out there.#Then maybe 50 years later some random person will find them and be like ooooh this is cool and then make a movie of it or something#and the concepts shall live on in some manner. so on and so forth. Of course the ideal is I have a long peaceful career of creating sculpt#ures and games and short story anthologies and tee hee and rainbows and so on but.. The statistical likelihood of that grows slimmer#I fear due to the world around me and my existing position within it. Unless i become randomly wealthy for some inexplicable reason#(not that money fixes everything. but it does give you an escape plan and a cushion for hardship. If your house is destroyed due to#ever worsening climate change and you're poor then.. welp. thats it pretty much. no hope. If your house is destroyed due to ever worsening#climate change but you have a decent amount of money then. okay. maybe you can rebuild. you can regain some security and stability#back in your life much faster and be back to a point of stasis and development. You're obviously#not invincible still BUT you can take more blows with a less strenuous recovery time. at least generally speaking)#ANYWAY.. huzzah. such a good time to be immune compromised and severely mentally ill. 1. Does anybody know the name or have a copy of this fanfic where I believe lwj is a Lord and he has 5 wives. I believe wwx was the 2nd wife and lwj didn't really notice him until one day he saw him playing with the other wives children. And I think one of the wives either the 1st or 3rd tried to kill him for favor. @teamironman98

2. hello! Iâm looking for a certain wangxian fic that crosses over with the tgcf world i think? Anyways itâs an au where wei ying is a former prince turned calamity and lan wangji is continuously reincarnating but a piece of his soul isnât with him. I think there was a saying in the fic that goes âIf you see a path of spiderlilies youâll meet someone again.â
Anyways thank you for your time!
FOUND? A Path of Red Spider Lillies by glowingreverie (M; 208k, wangxian, JYL/JZX, hualian, TGCF fusion, angst w happy ending, comedy, mild sexual content, gore, death, past child abuse, supernatural elements, slow burn, WIP)

3. Hello, I'm trying to find a fix where WWX was raised by a family of prostitutes that eventually free themselves of their contract and made a living teaching their arts. One of them married a rogue cultivator that makes jewelry and taught it to WWX. Eventually he meets LWJ and they get together relatively quick. WWX never gets that much involved with the Jiang Sect other than saving it during the war and JC loses his core and never got involved in the war. @justscribblingnonsenseâ

5. Hi! I'm hoping someone can help, please! I'm looking for a fic like The Yu Temper by madwriter223, where shortly after WWX frees the Wens from Qiongqi Path, JC decides instead to hell with it, flips, and promptly decides to start aggressively supporting WWX instead, along the lines of 'who are you to tell me what to do?!', resulting in the Wens being rehomed in Lotus Pier. This particular fic has JC swearing every sentence, even in his head, and potentially endgame Wangxian and Chenqing. I can't remember much more than that, I'm afraid but I'd be happy to receive any similar recs if you would rather make this a ITMF request instead! @katonahottinroof
Might be one of snowberryrose's đ€

6. Hello - Iâm trying to find a fic on the archive where Lan Zhan has full memories as a child and leaves cloud recesses and takes his mother with him. Then succeeds at finding Wei ying as a street child.

7. Hello! Iâm hoping you can help me find this fic. I remember so much about it apart from the name and tore through my bookmarks with no luck. It was a modern AU where WWX was a celebrity of some sort (idol/actor) and LWJ was a pet store owner. The two end up crossing paths and end up falling in love. I vividly remember the two of them going out with A-Yuan & being swamped by paparazzi and another scene where WWX is at a modeling shoot and LWJ steps in to help. I think it came out around 2021-ish? @heedoyurims
FOUND? I think number 7 is off-key by geragrena, which I am perpetually sad that I never downloaded a copy of before it was hidden.

8. Hello! Please help me find a fic/tell me if you remember it and it was deleted or something đ My search through ao3 bookmarks and tags was unfortunate but the work was really interesting and I sudeenly remembered it some days ago and can't calm down still. Thank you!!
Possible but maybe not really used tags: arranged marriage, misunderstandings, political intrigues
As far as I remember, there was an arranged marriage between wwx and Iwj, but on the next day/a week after the wedding Iwj goes to see wen qing, which makes wwx miserable and yzy mad because of his "incompetence" as a spouse. Then there was a discussion between sect leaders, including wrh, where wrh announced that wq will become Iwj's concubine and their children will be considered Iwj's and wwx's. Wwx accepts the terms, but is shocked, mad and heartbroken beecause he concludes that it was planned in advance and Iwj is in love with wq. He does not try to listen to lwj, warns him not to touch him and runs away to a cottage in yiling (maybe? And maybe owned by jc or jyl) where he usually resides when mdm yu gets mad at him and kicks him out of the main sect territory
He takes in some homeless kids, including xy, as his little students?/adoptees? and i think mm is his servant, and he chills with them and makes talismans for common people maybe, remaking his reputation which suffered after the marriage fiasco. There was also a ghost of a woman who was in the house and was looking at wwx silently but in a very sad way (maybe possibly it could be madam lan or just undisclosed ghost lady)
There was a scene when wq comes to visit him. She has a lan ribbon on her arm which makes wwx heartbroken again. She somehow explains without apologising that everything is not as it seems and that it had to be done to save her family. It all makes wwx feel like he was outcasted by everyone in the knowledge of the situation for no real reason and with no care for his own reputation and life. Also I think mm who previously thought that she and wq were maybe friends says after the talk that it seems like they are not really friends because wq seems to treat her not as an equal but as a friendly servant instead
Then something something with wc and I remember a scene in a cave where wx and Iwj are trapped and somehow kiss, and then Iwj is like pulling himself away and mentioning wq, which makes wwx miserable because there is possibly a soulmate thingy? btw them and he feels awful
And then i remember jzx, who is maybe friends with Iwj, being mad at wwx for something and asking if he knew what Iwj did for him and wwx has absolutely no idea
The latest chapters I remember included some nsfw, more angst and misunderstandings, and possibly Iwj blaming wwx for pretending to ignore/knowingly hiding the fact that they are soulmates and wwx being scared that his kids will be taken away from him and given to the lans. And there was a heavy sence that there are lots of things happening wwx has no idea about, including (possibly) lwj's letters to him
Thank you for your work!! @shellennium

10. hihi! I had wanted to rec this for #1 on the previous itmf (March 25th) but I realized I never saved it to my read list so I can't find it anymore!! đ it was a 3zun fic where I'm pretty sure jgy was forced by jgs into marrying warlord nmj. the rest of the world believed that the nies, esp nmj, are barbarians and super evil. so when jgy gets sent to the nies, he's mentally preparing himself to be raped or killed by nmj, but turns out nmj is super nice! and when jgy meets lxc (who is already married to nmj), lxc is really kind to him. and slowly jgy opens up to both of them and I think at one point they all go on a picnic date at a mountain? and later they get attacked while they're riding on horseback? honestly it's been so long I'm having trouble remembering the details skdjskd. also btw even though the plot sounds somewhat similar to the nielan fic soaring, carried aloft on the wind, that's not the one! this one was definitely 3zun and also from jgy's pov. hopefully someone knows the one I'm talking about!đ @cryiling

11. I'm looking for a fic where wwx died during some point in the burial mounds and became a god of death or something similar. In one part he figured out or was taught how to take a female form. He could visit people in their dreams as well. I swear I had it bookmarked, but can't find it. Thanks!

12. hi! this my first time sending an ask to this blog so I'm a little unsure if I'm doing this correctly but I'm trying to find this fic where JC noticed an older disciple acting weird/inappropriate with WWX at Lotus Pier when they were kids so JC informs JFM and JFM gets super angry and kicks the older disciple out of the sect or something along those lines. I can't remember if JC had travelled back in time and that's why they were kids again or if it was just JC remembering something from his childhood. I unfortunately don't remember anything else about the plot đ
thank you for your time! đ§Ą

14. Hey there! Iâm having trouble finding this one specific fic. It is wangxian. Wei Ying sent LĂĄn Wangji his drawing of a field of white bunnies (and I belief his donkey was in the picture as well?) and a letter. This was the last thing he sent to LĂĄn Wangji before he disappeared. I remember Sizhui being with Lan Wangji and other junior disciples in the search for Wei Wuxian. Cut to them finding the white bunny field, they still donât find him. As they return to Cloud Recesses, it turns out that Lan Sizhui took a bunny from that field. Specifically a non white bunny. That is all I can remember⊠thank you for the help!

15. Hello! I'm looking for a fic that I'd seen in a recent ITMF list but couldn't find it again. It was about lwj dealing with the aftermath of wwx's death and the discipline whip. Canon-compliant, and I believe it was an entire series of one-shots where the first fic focused of lwj and I believe the second one was about lsz
Hello! I'm #15 on the lastest fic finder. I'm afraid that's not the work I was looking for. The one I wanted wasn't a locked piece and I believe it dealt mainly with "chronic grief", but thank you for your efforts :)

16. Hello, for fic finder I want to find a short story set post canon where Wei Wuxian is transformed into a cat and keeps Jin Ling company, I vaguely remember a scene where Wei Wuxian in cat form bapped Fairy on the nose with his paw and stared in wonder at his paws possibly realising he had claws or in wonder that he touched a dog without running away screaming. I think he later figured out how to transform into his cat form at will to nap in sunbeams. Finding this story has been driving me nuts any help is greatly appreciated. @sorathemasterofmasters
FOUND? deep and inscrutable by twigofwillow (T, 1k, WWX & JL, Post-Canon, LSZ & LJY show up briefly, poor JL suffers so much, WWX does not care for Fairy at any time, it is a beautiful morning in Lanling and you are a horrible cat, Humor) this sounds like "deep and inscrutable" by twigofwillow, it doesn't have him figuring it out but he's definitely thinking about it, and the other details match

17. Hello, I recently remember this fic that ive read months ago and im not sure if i remember it correctly, i cant find it anymore so i hope u guys can help me with this.
- its a modern fic. wei ying is sick then he lives with the lans. i remember him going to the same school(?) with lan zhan. i think lqr told lz to take care of him smth like that. then there's a girl that is also sick(?) there's a scene where wy asked lz to stay with him but then lz left and chose the other girl (lz didnt know that wx is sick and he was like the girl needs me more than u) there's a confession on a radio station(?) then when lz found out that wy is sick he ran back to him. there's also jiang-wen family connections. wy is cousins to the jiangs and has a connection with wens, im not sure if rouhan is his grandfather or uncle or smth. then they found out there's a scene where madam yu slapped the girl because of what she did (hurt wy) and they cut off ties (business/job) with their family
im not sure if im talking about one story or two.
For #17 I'm sure I've read the fic but it was when I was early into fandom and new to AO3. Also the girl is engaged to LWJ or something. WWX already is in love with LWJ, Â but he's sick and gonna die in a year
~*~
18. hi, can u guys help me to find this: lwj is a doctor, lxc and nmj are i think cops(?) detectives(?) smth like that then wwx is a fox. they rescued wwx from the basement where someone cuts off his fox tails to sell. he was badly treated. lwj is his doctor and wwx somewhat attached to lwj. wwx also has a doll(?) or smth named wen qing. he's very protective of it. lwj is the one taking care of him. its not yet completed when i first read it.

19. Iâm looking for a wangxian modern with cultivation fic where WWX was kicked out of yunmeng for something that Jiang Cheng did. He wound up having most of his golden core removed but was able to recultivate one. Cultivators had to wear body cams when on assignment, and someone hacked into the files and released the film of what actually happened during the night hunt that WWX got kicked out for.
I didnât actually read it, I saw the summary and tags and planned to go back and read it laterâŠand now I canât find it. 90% sure it was complete and itâs on Ao3.
Thanks for the help! @worthlessnepenthesâ
FOUND! Hey hey I'm almost certain 19 of the very recent fic finder is Truth Will Out (when caught on video) by KizuKatana (E, 25k, wangxian, WN & WWX & WQ, modern cultivation, YZY abuses WWX, caught in camera, partial core removal, WWX expelled from Jiang sect, live streamer WWX, meet-ugly, dual cultivation, WIP) I was literally just reading the new chapter right before this. 20. Hiya! I was wondering if you could help me find a fic where wwx tried to commit suicide and jc finds him in the bathtub and it's kinda about him recuperating, and lwj helps take care of him? watching good omen season 1
ep 1 pilot
haven't seen a lot of it, mostly that people like it, that it's made by people people really like and that it's gay (or at least people make it gay) so you know, good pick for me. and i just watched to animations/animatics on youtube with bad endings and bad endings fuck me up, so hopefully this is happier. intro is a fucking banger. also god has a fem voice? nice. accurate skin colour for the earliest humans. not surprised, but appreciated. making fun of theology and great banter? i love it.
ominous picnic basket. oh... actually quite biblically fitting it seems. i REALLY hope they don't expect me to remember these names too well. many of the characters seem fun though.
of course the american politician says bs like "a regular y chromosome son". which i'm sure has not been tested as you 1: don't know the gender yet. 2: phenotype does not denote genotype.
i wonder who and how they'll figure out who has the wrong baby. "i don't recall what horror of history we had a lunch over, but i do recall what we had." the BEST dynamic.
will they even figure out they got the wrong one? ok, i know that working with an actual 5 year old would be a nightmare... but that kid is like 12.
well done making both heaven and hell look like shit. do you want grime overpopulating or empty, liminal, office spaces?
brilliant end of episode 1.
ep 2 the book
damn the forces of hell are so bloody rude and evil. and so many quick jokes.
question: what are the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse supposed to be in christianity? both biblically and in modern belief? they are separate from devils and angels.
i love a witch that also uses an ipad in her rituals.
"sorry, right number" seriously the humour in this show is so brilliant. i really hope the story is able to match it.
ep 3 hard times
a black knight shrugging is way too funny. i love these two. just two old friends helping each other out, it's just that that's diametrically opposing one another. the angel doing some tempting, the demon some miracles. and upper management doesn't care.
awh, they are just so cute together.
excuse me you are playing intro now? 28 minutes in? that's not an intro. that's a bloody intermission!
they really succeed at making heaving seem so extremely bad. extremely wide shot or extreme close-up. it's so incredibly uncomfortable.
the prime minister has a nice flat chested fucker in his bed.... good for him if he's not cheating.
"mend it all"/"end it all" whispers. really neat.
ep 4 saturday morning funtime
of course he was condemned for nothing more then asking questions.
ah, they got rid of pestilence to replace them with pollution. it's a good change, but feels pretty pre 2020.
oh no, i find his death so sad. he had a love, why kill him? i know the apocalypse is coming but still.
i still really hope that the presidents son turns out to be trans to just break the things he said at the start. then again it wouldn't really work as it's not the kids he said it about. idk, i guess i hope of screen son turns out to be trans to spite the person that'll never know... yea i'm holding out hope for something that doesn't matter.
azi being send to heaving is SO bad. his bookshop possibly burning down is emotionally worse. it was going to be the last episode of the day. but i started watching because i couldn't deal with bad endings, so i guess i'll have to watch one more.
ep 5 the doomsday option
Azi going full rogue (finally).
man that's the most obvious cold reading ever.
the guard reads a neil gaymen book. cute.
sir... your car is... more then a little on fire.
ep 6 the very last day of the rest of their lives
are we doing a flash back episode for the last episode of the season?
oh, please let him rebuild the car just like i want the bookshop rebuild?
the way to defeat the end of the world is to believe and stand (and i hope work) for a world that wouldn't end. a bit on the nose but very nice.
and of course with Terry Pratched being involved death is not to be defeated, just not hastened along.
a kid not doing the one thing they were supposed to do.... there's a trans/gay message in there. also That's Just What Kids Do! you wanted an 11 year old to do what they were told? that's the first part of the problem.
for a TV series that's a pretty good satan. oh that is SO clever. kind of time fucking, but not really so long as you never introduce time travel so it's only true from now on. oh, is it a nicer ending then i though? YES IT IS! \o/
it "ends" as it starts: with a garden and an apple. ok, make it more explicit why don't you.
oh, you subtle bastards. i love it. other scene's now make more sense too, oh how i love it.
ok, yea it makes sense people go wild over this as it's really bloody great.

Artisan clothing is one of those buzzwords, that everyone uses, but no one seems to know exactly what it is. It is often pigeonholed as âhandmade.â But, in reality, everything in fashion is hand made â because, there is no automatic t-shirt machine. All clothes are sewn at a sewing machine by real people by hand. So, what exactly is artisan fashion? And does it really create more ethical and sustainable supply chains? I am going to explain all of that in this artisan fashion article.   BUT BEFORE WE GET STARTED... I love helping startup brand founders succeed, so I created a bunch of free guides that will help you with your business. They wonât be free forever, so make sure to grab them while you can.    WHAT YOU WILL LEARN  NO TIME TO READ? CHECK OUT THIS 60 SECOND SLIDE SHOW! WHAT IS ARTISAN CLOTHING? Image from Studio Tia Artisan clothing is basically the complete opposite of fast fashion. And, it is often confused with fair trade. But, they are not the same. That is because, fair trade is an actual certification, while artisan is a loser term. There technically is not official definition of artisan fashion. But, for me, for something to be artisan, it needs to check three boxes.  1: IS IT HANDMADE? I know I said that all fashion is technically handcrafted. But, today, thanks to technology, a lot of practices and jobs have been automated by machines. For something to be artisan, it must be handmade clothing, with limited development from machines. Hereâs an example, remember how I mentioned that all clothes are made on sewing machines by hand? For a garment to be artisan, it would need to be made without the sewing machine and just a person stitching by hand. See the difference? Now stitching a garment by hand, without a sewing machine, is a very difficult and labor intensive process. For that reason, many brands will pick and choose different artisan components in their designs. It gets a little confusing, but, here's and example. So, on a machine sewn shirt, they might add some artisan hand embroidery. For me, for something to be artisan fashion, the whole thing does not have to be fully artisinal, but it should incorporate some handmade artisan techniques.  2: IS IT LOCAL? Artisan clothing is the opposite of global modern supply chain. All components should be local. Here is another example. For that same shirt we were just talking about to be truly artisan-made, the fabric should be woven or knit locally, and it should be dyed locally as well. So for this shirt example, if were making it in India. I would probably opt for organic cotton, which is local to the country, instead of linen which suppliers need to import from China or Belgium. Basically, the components (or ingredients) that make up the garment should not be traveling from all over the world; they should come from what is available regionally.  3: DOES IT HAVE A HISTORY? Artisan fashion should tell a story about culture. The craftsmanship should have roots. So, let's talk about that same artisan shirt. Yea, technically, a bright rainbow tie dye shirt is made by hand (think like The Grateful Dead kind) â but tie dye techniques like this have nothing to do with the region. If we really wanted to make an artisan shirt with a tie-dye effect, we would use Bandhani (Iâll share more about this technique soon), which is a traditional Indian tie-dye technique.   DO YOU SEE THE DIFFERENCE? Artisan clothing is so much more than crafts. Itâs a local, cultural movement.  ARTISAN VS COUTURE Now that you understand what artisan fashion is, letâs talk about couture fashion. In contrast, couture fashion is luxury fashion thatâs custom-made for a client using high-quality materials and design techniques. The word itselfâCouture--comes from the French word for sewing; couture designers often create custom gowns for well-known clients such as actors and models.Oftentimes in the world of couture fashion, specific measurements are taken of the person who will wear the gown, to be sure the custom-made garment is tailored to perfectly fit their body. Generally, artisan clothing is not made for an individual, and it can be mass-produced. But, here's the thing, many of the handmade, high attention-to-detail components we see in couture are also in artisan clothes. And, while all artisans are highly skilled, they are not all at the level of skill that a couture person is.  PROS OF ARTISAN CLOTHING Image from Muzungusi Sisters You know I love it. Hereâs why you should too.   ONE OF A KIND (Without the price tag.) Think about your favorite article of clothing. Iâll give you a minute. I bet whatever you just envisioned has some sort of an emotional connection to you. Maybe it was the outfit you met your significant other in, maybe itâs your lucky jersey, or maybe itâs a hand me down from your grandmother. While I have no idea what you thought of, I am willing to bet it made you feel something.Items that cannot be purchased just âanywhereâ make you feel pretty darn good when you wear them. Theyâre unique. Artisan clothing is similar. With artisan fashion, you are wearing something few people own. Itâs special. While artisanal clothing can technically be mass-produced, (Iâll get more into that later) because each piece is really being made by hand, they are all a little bit different.  PRESERVES CULTURES AND CREATES JOBS I already mentioned that to be artisanal fashion, the techniques, and materials must have strong roots in the local culture. The sad thing is that in many places, these traditions are dying. Younger generations no longer want to do the jobs their parents have done for generations and want new opportunities. They want to get jobs in cities and work in office buildings. They aspire to be working that 9-5 corporate grind, or to become TikTok famous. I have met with artisans from India to Italy. And the story is always the same. They are desperate for young hands to take over the traditions. One of the biggest reasons why younger people do not want these jobs is because they donât believe there is a future in them. For decades machines have been taking over the fashion industry, and artisans have found it hard and harder to find new brands to take on as clients. Thankfully with the rising popularity of sustainable and ethical fashion, more brands are becoming interested in reviving these techniques, so in recent years business has actually been quite good for many artisans, including female artisans. But, if the trend of conscious fashion dies, so will these craftspeople's livelihoods.  JOB CREATION A lot of artisan work is done in remote villages. And, this is important. Because in many countries, it is difficult, if not impossible, to find work. It is not uncommon for husbands and adult children to leave their home, go to larger cities, find work, and send money back to their families in the villages. Itâs a hard and lonely life. With artisan-made fashion, we are seeing jobs return to villages. People are able to work and stay at home with their families. And, IMO, this is of the most important benefits of artisanal work - improving people's quality of life.  HIGHLY SKILLED WORKERS Artisans begin training when they are children. And, no - itâs not child labor. Think of it this way. Famous authors started learning how to read and write when they were five. Doctors started learning about biology in middle school. Just like a white color job, training for artisan skills starts at a young age. Because many of these crafts use complex techniques it can take years to learn, and decades to perfect. And, let me be clear. Starting to learn a technical skill from a young age is not the same as working in a factory. Because of their lifelong training, artisans tend to have extremely high skill sets and can work with almost machine-like procession. Now, like anything of course, there are people who arenât so great at their jobs. But, in general, when you work with artisans, they are going to be able to produce a very high-quality product because of all of their years of practice.  ARTISAN CLOTHING AND SUSTAINABILITY Image from Caravana Generally, artisan made products help to reduce manufacturing carbon footprints. Artisans usually do not use machinery that gobbles up electricity, and they tend to stay away from processes that emit dangerous toxins into the air, opting for more natural techniques. One of my favorite examples of this is khadi fabric. And, if you know me, you know I love it. Khadi is a hand-spun and hand-woven fabric from India. It has been estimated that the fashion industry uses over 132 tons of coal for fabric weaving alone. Khadi manufacturing uses none, because everything in the supply chain is done by hand. Even the cotton picking uses people instead of machines.  MASS PRODUCTION IS POSSIBLE Image from Caravana Yes, you can scale while still working with artisans. And, hear me out, this is a good thing. There are currently more artisans than orders. Meaning, a lot of artisans are hoping for work. The bigger orders brands can provide, the more people they can help employ. What brands usually do is they will start with one artisan group (also called clusters). And, when that group has reached its max and canât take on any new orders because they are too busy, they will then find other communities to start working with. One of the best examples of artisan craft at scale is Build A Nest. Build A Nest works to connect big brands like West Elm, Patagonia, and even Tory Burch to help them meet and work with artisans from all over the world. They even help small startup brands too!  A FEW OF MY FAVORITE ARTISAN TECHNIQUES Image from Lemlem  BLOCK PRINTING Block printing involves printing on textiles using carved wooden blocks. The block is dipped in ink, and stamped directly onto the fabric or paper to create a design. You can check out the block print process here. And, watch me doing my own block printing in Jaipur here!  TIE DYE SHABORI: This is a traditional, Japanese dyeing technique in which patterns are created on fabric via binding, compressing, and twisting the material before the dye is applied. The dye then seeps into the fabric in different areas, creating unique designs. Traditionally indigo dye is used, but today shibori techniques are used for other types of dyes as well. BANDHANI: Is the Indian version of Shibori. But, instead of binding with blocks and other tools, the fabric is twisted and tied with small pieces of string.  EMBROIDERY AND BEADING This is an intricate art form in which designs are hand stitched into the fabric, using a needle and thread. The process is extremely time-consuming. Beads can also be added to the technique to create more elaborate and textured designs.  LACE MAKING This dates back to Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries; itâs an art form greatly appreciated for its intricacy. Did you know that lace-making is basically embroidery? Threads are stitched into a special fabric, the fabric backing is then dissolved, and you are left with only the stitches - this is lace.  KNITTING AND WEAVING As I mentioned earlier, weaving can be done by hand, like in the case of khadi fabric. And, also knitting can be artisan as well. Today most sweaters are made by machines that are programmed and literally spit a full sweater out (itâs kind of like the Jetsons). But there are many artisan groups who are still knitting sweaters with two needles and a ball of yarn.  ITâS ALL IN THE YARN Machines will never be able to replicate hand woven and knit textiles, and that is because they literally canât. Hand knitting and weaving yarns are actually different than machine yarns. So, try as technology might - it will never be the same. And, by the way, hand-made textiles tend to have a much softer, and cozy feeling.  SOME OF MY FAVORITE ARTISAN CLOTHING BRANDS Image from Symbology Here are a few artisan brands you should definitely check out for artisan inspiration, or shop. They are great to look at because, in my opinion, they are taking old manufacturing techniques, and mixing them with modern designs. Caravana - this brand is serious Tulum vibes, and uses local Mexican artisans for their textiles Studio Tia - partners with Indian artisans to create ethical boho pieces at affordable prices. Symbology - Inclusive easy to style pieces, with an emphasis on working with women artisans Mezungu Sisters - an independent, women owned brand that uses artisan groups from all over the world to create modern luxury clothes that tell a story Lemlem - hand woven Ethiopian textiles, with garments sewn all over Africa  WHERE TO FIND ARTISAN CLOTHING SUPPLIERS Image from Studio Tia This can be tricky, because a lot of artisan groups are remote, and they arenât very internet savvy. But, thatâs ok - here are a few places to get a head start LOCAL NGO - I would start here with a simple Google search. Just type in the country you want to manufacture in + the technique you want + NGO. So, your search might look something like this Mexico fabric weaving NGO. Or, Indian embroidery NGO. You can even get specific with cities or regions. So instead of Mexico, you could search Oaxaca fabric weaving NGO. BUILD A NEST - I mentioned them earlier in this article, but they are worth mentioning again, to date they have access to the largest network of global artisans, and, get this, even though they work with huge brands, they are willing to help small startups partner with the perfect artisan community!  WHAT DO YOU THINK? Do you look at artisan-made clothes differently now? Are you going to use artisan manufacturing techniques in your collection? Would you consider using artisans for other types of products, like accessories, jewelry, or bags? Source link

Source link

12 Short Poem About Youth Today
In an era marked by rapid social changes, technological advancements, and global crises, youth today face a complex landscape. The essence of youthâdefined by its vibrancy, idealism, and transformative potentialâis also entangled with challenges such as mental health concerns, identity exploration, and the pressure to succeed. Poetry, in its concise and expressive form, captures the fleeting nature of youth, reflecting both its beauty and its struggles.
This article explores twelve short poems about youth today, offering a variety of perspectives that shed light on the diverse experiences of modern youth. Through these poems, we examine themes such as self-discovery, resilience, hope, and the search for meaning.
1. âThe Road Not Takenâ by Robert Frost
Though written in 1916, Robert Frostâs The Road Not Taken continues to resonate with young people today, particularly as they face pivotal life decisions. The poem speaks to the choices youth must make, often between paths that are uncertain and fraught with consequences.
âI took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.â
The notion of making choices that âmake all the differenceâ is central to the experience of youth today. In an age of increasing options, career paths, and personal identity questions, youth are confronted with decisions that can shape the trajectory of their lives. Frostâs poem subtly emphasizes the idea that individuality and non-conformity may lead to fulfillment, but it also highlights the weight of those choicesâa theme youth today grapple with regularly.
2. âYouthâ by Samuel Ullman
Samuel Ullmanâs poem Youth epitomizes the resilience and vitality often associated with young people. It celebrates the emotional richness and courage of youth, reinforcing the notion that itâs not merely a stage of life but a state of mind.
âYouth is not a time of life, it is a state of mind; It is the freshness of the deep springs of life.â
In a world where youth often feels pressured to mature quickly, Ullmanâs reflection reminds us that true youth is a mindset. In todayâs society, where youth can feel like it is fleeting, this poem serves as an ode to the inner strength and vigor that many young people retain. It urges youth to embrace their dreams and fears with equal passion, despite the external pressures they may face.
3. âTo the Virgins, to Make Much of Timeâ by Robert Herrick
Written in the 17th century, Herrickâs To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time is a call to live fully and seize the moment, a sentiment that resonates with contemporary youth. It challenges them to make the most of their youth before it fades.
âGather ye rosebuds while ye may, Old Time is still a-flying; And this same flower that smiles today, Tomorrow will be dying.â
The pressure to act quickly, take opportunities, and cherish youth is evident here. While Herrickâs focus is on the fleeting nature of beauty and time, youth today face the added pressure of social media, where the fear of missing out (FOMO) constantly looms. This poem encourages youth to be present, to make memories, and to pursue experiences before time slips awayâa relevant message in the age of social comparison and digital surveillance.
4. âStill I Riseâ by Maya Angelou
Maya Angelouâs Still I Rise is a powerful anthem of resilience, empowerment, and defiance in the face of adversity. It speaks to the spirit of youth fighting against oppression and striving to overcome obstacles.
âYou may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, Iâll rise.â
This poem is a celebration of resilienceâan important theme for youth today, who often face social, political, and personal challenges. The poemâs message that no matter the adversity, the spirit of youth can always rise above, mirrors the experience of young people who navigate systemic inequities, discrimination, and personal struggles while striving for a better future.
5. âThe Courage That My Mother Hadâ by Edna St. Vincent Millay
Edna St. Vincent Millayâs poem The Courage That My Mother Had explores the inheritance of strength, wisdom, and courage from one generation to the next. The poem reflects on the challenges of youth and the desire to emulate those who have lived before.
âBut the courage that my mother had Is as old as the hills, And it has passed to me.â
Youth today often find themselves reflecting on the legacies handed down by previous generations. This poem highlights the continuity of strength, reminding young people that they are not alone in their struggles and that the courage of their ancestors is an ever-present source of inspiration. For many, this inherited wisdom helps them navigate the complexities of modern life.
6. âThe Youth of Todayâ by Kofi Awoonor
Kofi Awoonorâs poem The Youth of Today expresses the longing for change and a better future. Awoonor, a Ghanaian poet, reflects on the youthful energy required to challenge social injustices, resonating with the youth movements around the world today.
âWe will rise, We will fight, We will change the world.â
Awoonor captures the optimism and urgency that define youthâs pursuit of justice and reform. In the context of global movements such as climate action, racial justice, and gender equality, the poem emphasizes youthâs role in shaping a better world. Their energy and passion for activism provide a counterpoint to the apathy often associated with older generations, underscoring the transformational power of youth.
7. âA Dream Deferredâ by Langston Hughes
Langston Hughesâs A Dream Deferred questions what happens when aspirations are denied, delayed, or crushed. This poem speaks directly to the disillusionment felt by many young people when their dreams face societal constraints or systemic barriers.
âWhat happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up Like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a soreâ And then run?â
Youth often experience the tension between ambition and reality, and Hughes poignantly explores the emotional toll this can take. Whether itâs unmet expectations or the crushing weight of social inequalities, the poem draws attention to the risks of stifling youthâs dreams and potential. In the modern context, this resonates with young people facing economic challenges, mental health struggles, and societal pressures to conform.
8. âThe New Colossusâ by Emma Lazarus
Emma Lazarusâs The New Colossus is often seen as a symbol of hope, especially for young immigrants and refugees. The poem speaks to the welcoming nature of America, positioning the Statue of Liberty as a beacon for those in search of a new life.
âGive me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me.â
For youth today, especially those from marginalized communities, this poem speaks to the desire for freedom and opportunity. It reflects the dreams of a better future, where youth can find safety, equality, and a sense of belonging. In an age marked by migration and the search for asylum, Lazarusâs words are a call for inclusivity and hope for the youth displaced by conflict and hardship.
9. âI, Tooâ by Langston Hughes
Another poignant poem by Langston Hughes, I, Too reflects the experience of marginalized youth asserting their rightful place in society. The poemâs speaker, though initially silenced, affirms their dignity and right to equality.
âI, too, sing America. I am the darker brother. They send me to eat in the kitchen When company comes, But I laugh, And eat well, And grow strong.â
Hughesâs poem speaks to the resilience of youth who face systemic racism, discrimination, or other forms of exclusion. It is a declaration of identity and strength in the face of adversity. For youth today, this poem serves as a reminder that despite being marginalized, they possess the strength and power to demand their place and shape the future.
10. âIfâ by Rudyard Kipling
Rudyard Kiplingâs If offers timeless advice for navigating the challenges of life, providing a guide to maturity, emotional control, and fortitude. It is a poem that resonates with the ideals many young people strive to embody as they face the complexities of modern life.
âIf you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth youâve spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build âem up with worn-out tools.â
In the face of a rapidly changing world, youth today are confronted with uncertainty and potential failure. Kiplingâs poem offers a blueprint for resilience, urging youth to remain steady amidst adversity. This poem encourages the perseverance needed to overcome disappointments and setbacks, qualities vital for the youth of today to navigate an often tumultuous world.
11. âThe Youthâ by Ralph Waldo Emerson
Ralph Waldo Emersonâs The Youth delves into the raw energy, potential, and boundless enthusiasm inherent in youth. It captures the dynamic potential that the younger generation holds as they confront the unknowns of life.
âThe youth is the hope of the world.â
This short but powerful line encapsulates the belief that youth holds the key to shaping a better future. Emerson places his faith in the vibrancy and untapped potential of the younger generation. This is especially relevant today, as youth movements continue to challenge established norms and seek progressive change.
12. âTo My Younger Selfâ by David Berman
In To My Younger Self, David Berman reflects on the loss and regret that often accompany growing up, offering wisdom and advice to a younger version of himself. This poem speaks to the generational divide and the longing for the simplicity of youth.
âI would have told you to take it slow, But youth is too wild to be told.â
Bermanâs acknowledgment of youthâs impulsivity and rebellious nature is a recognition of the complex journey of self-discovery. Todayâs youth are often caught between the desire for instant gratification and the longer-term wisdom of their elders. This poem highlights the tension between youthful recklessness and the wisdom that can only be earned through time.
Conclusion
The twelve poems explored in this article provide a rich tapestry of perspectives on the experience of youth today. They capture the vitality, the struggles, the resilience, and the hope that define the younger generation as they navigate a rapidly changing world. While the context and language of each poem may differ, they all underscore the universal themes of self-discovery, the pursuit of dreams, and the resilience to overcome adversity. These timeless works of art continue to resonate with the youth of today, providing both reflection and inspiration as they face the challenges and opportunities of their own journeys.

[RERUN] Crisis on Infinite Earths, Issue 5:Â âWorlds in Limboâ (Didnât the series end last issue?)
[All images are owned by DC Comics. Please donât sue me.]
PREVIOUSLY ONâŠ
A wave of anti-matter (involuntarily heralded by a being known as Pariah) is destroying universes, to the point that only a handful remain. However, he has managed to save Lady Quark, one of the ruling family on Earth-6.
A being known as the Monitor and his assistant Lyla (AKA Harbinger) are working to save those that are left. The Monitor has also recruited the sole survivor of Earth-3âs universe, Alexander Luthor, who is made of matter and anti-matter.
As this happens, Psycho Pirate, the Flash, and the Red Tornado are taken by the being responsible. The being has recruited Psycho Pirate and compromised Harbinger, ordering her to kill the Monitor as the anti-matter consumes the universes containing Earths 1 and 2!
âŠor did it? I mean, we are continuing the story, after all. If you would like to read this issue, it (along with the rest of the series) has been collected in graphic novel form and is available (or can be ordered) at your favorite comic shop, bookstore, or online retailerâŠor on Read Comic Online.
[Quick head count on what remains: Now only Earth-4 (containing the Charleton heroes), Earth-S (containing the Fawcett heroes), and Earth-X (containing the Quality heroes) remain.]
Lyla laments that she killed the Monitor, but then a recording starts from the Monitor laying out that Lylaâs killing him was part of his plan (you know, most people would plan on their survival being integral to their plan succeedingâŠ) and that the two universes were contained within his bodyâs energies, slowly merging into one universe (note that Earths 4, S, and X are still at the Big Badâs mercies), but the merging is unstable and could destroy them both unless they act quickly (with Alexander Luthorâs help)
Speaking of the Big Bad, he apparently plans to use the Red Tornado and Psycho Pirate to shape the new Universe (wait, wasnât New Universe a Marvel line?)
(Thanks to Marvel Database)
As Earths 1 and 2 continue to merge (Iâm gonna call them Earth-Merged for now), time is also merging, as dinosaurs, members of the Continental Army, aliens visiting the Legion of Super Heroes museum, and neanderthals are all in modern Metropolis.
Sounds like a typical Thursday.
Meanwhile, Harbinger, Alexander, and Pariah have assembled the bulk of the heroes of Earth-Merged on the Monitorâs satellite to explain what is happening. There are those who donât believe them, but Earth-2âČs Superman (Iâll just call him Kal-L, otherwise it will get too confusing) proposes that everyone be sent back to assess the danger and decide whether to become involved.
Meanwhile, on Oa (home to the Guardians of the Universe and the now-destroyed Central Power Battery of the Green Lantern Corps), a large group of (powerless) Green Lanterns arrive to see the Guardians being held in stasis. Before they can act, the stasis beam explodes, catching the Lanterns in the blast!
Back on Earth-Merged, Lois Lane, reporter for WGBS (who, during the early 80s, apparently had a deal with the Daily Planet to share reporters) was about the be attacked by a sabre-tooth tiger, but is (naturally) saved by SupermanâŠ
âŠonly itâs Kal-L instead of âherâ Superman. Superman and Kal-L tell the viewers at home whatâs happening.
Meanwhile, the Big Bad is changing Red Tornado intoâŠsomething else (he doesnât specify) as Psycho Pirate plays with Flashâs fearsâŠ
Suddenly, a storm more powerful than any of DCâs sorcerers can handle threatens Earth-Merged. Dr. Fate suggests everyone use their spells together. They succeed, and it turns out to be the Red Tornado.
During the storm, Wildcatâs legs are shattered to the point that heâll never walk again.
Somehow, this is enough to tip the scales to the point that everyone is on board to save Earth-Merged. However, the Monitorâs satellite is attacked as they plan their next move.
At this point, the Flash manages to shrug off Psycho-Pirateâs fear attack enough to goad the Big Bad into revealing himself.
He calls himself âThe Monitorâ, but everyone from this point on calls him the Anti-Monitor (because heâs from the anti-matter universe)
Meanwhile, on Earth-X, the Anti-Monitor has begun his assault. (we can only assume Earth-S and Earth-4 are also being attacked)
WILL the final three universes survive?
CAN the Flash escape?
WAS buying these comic companies a colossal waste of money?
These answers and more will be answered next issue!

Title: BEATSXBEAST: FIRE READY
Genre: Shonen, Dystopian, Music, Battle
Setting: A dark, post-modern dystopian world similar to "Akira" or "Cowboy Bebop." The society is cold and harsh, with music being one of the few remaining sources of warmth and inspiration.
Overview:
Protagonist:
Ryo - A young, talented, and somewhat arrogant music producer. He believes his music sets him apart from the bleak world around him, keeping him from falling into despair like everyone else. His music can summon powerful avatars known as "Beasts" to battle each other, similar to "Yu-Gi-Oh!" or "Digimon."
Power Scale:
Heartburn - A measure of the soul and passion that allows Ryo to produce powerful beats, which in turn create stronger Beasts. The more intense the Heartburn, the more formidable the Beast.
Plot Summary So Far:
Chapter 1: Remixing for Power
Ryo decides to remix a J. Cole record to hone his Heartburn abilities. The intense process of remixing pushes him to the brink, but he succeeds in creating a stronger Beast, feeling a rush of both triumph and exhaustion.
Chapter 2: The Dilemma of Salting
Ryo faces the dilemma of "salting" his Beastâsampling too many influences to create a unique power and skill set. Despite warnings about the dangers and breaking traditional rules, Ryo enters a flow state called "INNOState," allowing him to innovate chaotically. He resolves to not let anything hold him back, even if it means breaking the rules.
Ryo: "I wonât let that shit hold me back. I'll even break the rules if I have to. Nothing is going to stop me!" he laughs like an awakened jackal, called for judgment of an unworthy soul.
Chapter 3: Confronting Reprimand
Ryo breaks another rule and is confronted by a projection of his favorite artist, reprimanding him for salting a track. However, Ryo shuts down the projection, asserting the special nature of his creation.
Ryo: "Hey, despite anything, this one is special. Hell, Iâd be mad too if I heard someone else made this."
Ryo marvels at what he has created and eagerly uploads the Beast, excited for what happens next.
Chapter 4: A Defeating Moment
Ryo experiences a moment of frustration when his Beasts don't receive the recognition he believes they deserve.
Ryo: "NothingâŠDAMMIT!" he slams his fist into the console, slightly shaking the floor and bending the console. "What is it?! All of my Beasts are pristine, yet no one cares to contest or even say how cool they areâŠ."
Unbeknownst to him, several panels show people being terrified, impressed but choosing to ignore it, enraged, or apathetic. The view changes to a large Egyptian-styled military base hovering overhead, ominously hinting at future conflicts.
Chapter 5: The Dilemma
Ryo visits a record store unlike any other, filled with all kinds of media. He finds a Sony DATstation PCM-E7700 with over 150 DATS, priced at 650 REMI. Ryo is excited but faced with a dilemma: spending the money could get him evicted, as his rent is due in a week.
Ryo (thinking): "Dammit!âŠwhat do I doâŠ.."
A voice from next to him interrupts his thoughts, and the shopkeeper, Keeper, offers him a deal. Ryo can take the DAT now and work off the cost by running the shop while Keeper is away.
Keeper: "My name is Keeper, and I donât do favors. Blessings are more my style. Since you seem like a hard worker, how about you work at the shop? Say yes, you can take the DAT home now and work it off, but I need you here at 6:00 am sharp or the deal is off."
Ryo, faced with an opportunity of a lifetime, agrees despite his reservations.
Ryo: "I'll do it."
Keeper: "Good. 6:00 am SHARP. I'll give you the DAT then. Besides, the tapes aren't here yet."
That night, Ryo lies in bed, thinking about Keeper, the DAT, and his new job.
Ryo (thinking): "ManâŠwhat nowâŠ.."

One of the more timid-looking posts, in pale greens and creams and yellows, says Hello, I'm managing to be fairly high functioning right now but I'm really not doing as well as it may appear, and Lan Zhan feels as if someone sneaked into his mind and read his most secret thoughts, the ones he's never even dared to admit to himself. âOh! Lan Zhan! What a surprise to see you here.â
Wei Ying slipped his backpack from his shoulders and slid into the seat across from him with a smile, leaning forward and resting his cheek on his palm in what he knew to be a cute gesture. Most alphas became wide-eyed and stupid when he did things like this.
But Lan Zhan looked at him with serene intensity, like a pool of undisturbed water. Like the vastness of space.

Phishing by Lovewave_Aesthetic
Wei Wuxian has debts to pay and, unfortunately, the money he makes from babysitting Lan Sizhui is never gonna be enough, no matter how generous the kid's distractingly handsome dad might be. The good news is, he's a very gifted hacker and there's a lot of extra money to be made from running phishing scams on corporate executives who clearly slept through their cybersecurity courses. The bad news is, he hasn't been careful enough with covering his tracks.

The old woman looks at Lan Zhan. "What's his name?" Lan Zhan looks down at the man's pale, slack face, and presses his own hand against the cut, trying to staunch the blood flow with his glove. "Wei Ying," he says without thinking about it. The man stirs slightly in his arms, his eyes blinking open for a moment. "Oh," he says faintly. "It's you." Lan Zhan stares down at him, the stranger in his arms, whose name is Wei Ying. Which is something Lan Zhan knows. How does he know that? How doesâhe can'tâthis isn'tâ "It's okay," Wei Ying says, reaching up to pat vaguely at Lan Zhan's face. "It's allâ" His eyes slip closed again and he's limp in Lan Zhan's arms.

CapĂtulo 3 (creo que lo recuerdo)
Wei WuXian had thought his troubles had ended after the mess with Jin GuangYao was sorted out, and that he would spend the rest of his life happily with his beloved Lan Zhan, double cultivating and rebuilding his golden core. However, fate had other plans. Mo XuanYu's frail body could not contain his increasing power, and an inevitable cultivation accident occurs, sending Wei WuXian to his six-year old body, just before Jiang FengMian found him. Will the YiLing Patriarch have a happier life this time around?

CapĂtulo 2
Casi puedo jurar que sà terminé de leer esto, porque me suena muy familiar. Tal vez era otro con una premisa parecida. Releer para estar segura.
Ah. The Asshole Dog is loose again. Lan Zhan knows that it is not the dogâs fault for being an asshole, but The Asshole Dog is the reason Lan Zhan had a fence put in at a significant personal expense, because the alternative was allowing his garden to be destroyed and for Bunny to be menaced on her leashed outdoor adventures. Unacceptable. The Most Beautiful Man in the World cringes at the barking, scooting further away from the door through a sea of a dozen broken eggs and leaving a yolky trail in his wake. âFuck,â he whimpers, curling into a ball, both hands wrapped around the back of his neck as if toâas if to protect himself, Lan Zhan realizes. âFuck, fuck, fuck, pleaseââ The Most Beautiful Man in the World begs, voice ragged. Heâs definitely hyperventilating now, from what Lan Zhan can tell between the audible sobs. Thereâs another bark from outside, and The Most Beautiful Man in the World flinches bodily, making a terrified sound that Lan Zhan feels behind his ribs. Or: A meet ugly, a dog, and the beginning of something wonderful.

Lan Wanji was never told the details of his parents' story. Now that he has discovered his own desires, his life's goal is to keep Wei Wuxian from finding out. But life is cruel and truths get revealed at the worst possible times.
âAh, but there are other Wens here though,â Jin Guangshan gave an appraising look to Wen Ning and Wen Qing. âWho could say where they were last night.â
âWhere do you think I was,â Wen Qing retorted quickly, âon my wedding night?â [...] âWhat about him then?â a Jin pointed at Wen Ning.
âHe was with me,â Nie Mingjue said flatly.
âAll night?â Nie Huaisang peeked over his fan to stare at his brother. âWhat were you doing?â
âTalking,â Nie Mingjue said in a threatening tone. The fan went back up.

Ten Things We Hate About Trad Pub
Often when I say âIâve started a small press; we publish the works of those who have trouble breaking into traditional publishing!â what people seem to hear is âme and a bunch of sad saps couldnât sell our books in the Real World so weâve made our own place with lower standards.â For those with minimal understanding of traditional publishing (trad pub), this reaction is perhaps understandable? But, truly, there are many things to hate about traditional publishing (and, donât get me wrong - there are things to love about trad pub, too, but thatâs not what this list is about) and itâs entirely reasonable for even highly accomplished authors to have no interest in running the gauntlet of genre restrictions, editorial control, hazing, long waits, and more, that make trad pub at best, um, challenging, and at worst, utterly inaccessible to many authors - even excellent ones.
Written in collaboration with @jhoomwrites, with input from @ramblingandpie, here is a list of ten things that we at Duck Prints Press detest about trad pub, why we hate it, and why/how we think things should be different!
(Needless to say, part of why we created Duck Prints Press was to...not do any of these things... so if youâre a writer looking for a publishing home, and you hate these things, too, and want to write with a Press that doesnât do them...maybe come say hi?)
-
1. Work lengths dictated by genre and/or author experience.
Romance novels canât be longer than 90,000 words or they wonât sell! New authors shouldnât try to market a novel longer than 100,000 words!
A good story is a good story is a good story. Longer genre works give authors the chance to explore their themes and develop their plots. How often an author has been published shouldnât put a cap on the length of their work.
-
2. Editors assert control of story events...except when they donât.
If you donât change this plot point, the book wonât market well. Oh, youâre a ten-time bestseller? Write whatever you want, even if it doesnât make sense we know people will buy it.
Sometimes, a beta or an editor will point out that an aspect of a story doesnât work - because itâs nonsensical, illogical, Deus ex Machina, etc. - and in those cases itâs of course reasonable for an editor to say, âThis doesnât work and we recommend changing it, for these reasonsâŠâ However, when that list of reasons begins and ends with, â...because it wonât sellâŠâ thatâs a problem, especially because this is so often applied as a double standard. Weâve all read bestsellers with major plot issues, but those authors get a âbyeâ because editors donât want to exert to heavy a hand and risk a proven seller, but with a new, less experienced, or worse-selling author, the gloves come off (even though evidence suggests time and again that publishersâ ability to predict what will sell well is at best low and at worst nonexistent.)
-
3. A billion rejection letters as a required rite of passage (especially when the letters aren't helpful in pinpointing why a work has been rejected or how the author can improve).
Well, my first book was rejected by a hundred Presses before it was accepted! How many rejection letters did you get before you got a bite? What, only one or two? OhâŠ
How often one succeeds or fails to get published shouldnât be treated as a form of hazing, and we all know that how often someone gets rejected or accepted has essentially no bearing on how good a writer they are. Plenty of schlock goes out into the world after being accepted on the first or second try...and so does plenty of good stuff! Likewise, plenty of schlock will get rejected 100 times but due to persistence, luck, circumstances, whatever, finally find a home, and plenty of good stuff will also get rejected 100 times before being publishing. Rejections (or lack there of) as a point of pride or as a means of judging others needs to die as a rite of passage among authors.
-
4. Query letters, for so many reasons.
Summarize all your hard work in a single page! Tell us who youâre like as an author and what books your story is like, so we can gauge how well itâll sell based on two sentences about it! Format it exactly the way we say or we wonât even consider you!
For publishers, agents, and editors who have slush piles as tall as Mount Everest...we get it. There has to be a way to differentiate. We donât blame you. Every creative writing class, NaNoWriMo pep talk, and college lit department combine to send out hundreds of thousands of people who think all they need to do to become the next Ernest Hemingway is string a sentence together. There has to be some way to sort through that pile...but God, canât there be a better way than query letters? Especially since even with query letters being used it often takes months or years to hear back, and...
-
5. "Simultaneous submissions prohibited.â
No, we donât know when weâll get to your query, but weâll throw it out instantly if you have the audacity to shop around while you wait for us.
The combination of âno simultaneous submissionsâ with the query letter bottleneck makes success slow and arduous. It disadvantages everyone who aims to write full-time but doesnât have another income source (their own, or a parentsâ, or a spouseâs, or, or or). The result is that entire classes of people are edged out of publishing solely because the process, especially for writers early in their career, moves so glacially that people have to earn a living while they wait, and itâs so hard to, for example, work two jobs and raise a family and also somehow find the time to write. Especially considering that the standard advice for dealing with âno simultaneous submissionsâ is âjust write something else while you wait!â ...the whole system screams privilege.
-
6. Genres are boxes that must be fit into and adhered to.
Your protagonist is 18? Then obviously your book is Young Adult. It doesnât matter how smutty your book is, erotica books must have sex within the first three chapters, ideally in the first chapter. Sorry, weâre a fantasy publisher, if you have a technological element you donât belong hereâŠ
While some genre boxes have been becoming more like mesh cages of late, with some flow of content allowed in and out, many remain stiff prisons that constrict the kinds of stories people can tell. Even basic cross-genre works often struggle to find a place, and thereâs no reason for it beyond âif we canât pigeon-hole a story, itâs harder to sell.â This edges out many innovative, creative works. It also disadvantages people who arenât as familiar with genre rules. And donât get me wrong - this isnât an argument that, for example, the romance genre would be improved by opening up to stories that donât have âhappily ever afters.â Instead, itâs pointing out - there should also be a home for, say, a space opera with a side romance, an erotica scene, and a happily-for-now ending. Occasionally, works breakthrough, but for the most part stories that donât conform never see the light of day (or, they do, but only after Point 2 - trad pub editors insist that the elements most âoutsideâ the box be removed or revised).
-
7. The lines between romance and erotica are arbitrary, random, and hetero- and cis-normative.
This modern romance novel wonât sell if it doesnât have an explicit sex scene, but God forbid you call a penis a penis. Oh, no, this is far too explicit, even though the book only has one mlm sex scene, this is erotica.
The difference between âromanceâ and âeroticaâ might not matter so much if not for the stigmas attached to erotica and the huge difference in marketability and audience. The difference between âromanceâ and âeroticaâ also might not matter so much if not for the fact that, so often, even incredibly raunchy stories that feature cis straight male/cis straight female sex scenes are shelved as romance, but the moment the sex is between people of the same gender, and/or a trans or genderqueer person is involved, and/or the relationship is polyamorous, and/or the characters involved are literally anything other than a cis straight male pleasuring a cis straight female in a âstandardâ way (cunnilingus welcome, pegging need not apply)...then the story is erotica. Two identical stories will get assigned different genres based on who the people having sex are, and also based on the âskillâ of the author to use ludicrous euphemisms (instead of just...calling body parts what theyâre calledâŠ), and itâs insane. Non-con can be a âromanceâ novel, even if itâs graphically described. â50 Shades of Grayâ can sell millions of copies, even containing BDSM. But the word âvaginaâ gets used once...bam, erotica. (Seriously, the only standard that should matter is the Envelope Analogy).
-
8. Authors are expected to do a lot of their own legwork (eg advertising) but then don't reap the benefits.
Okay, so, youâre going to get an advance of $2,500 on this, your first novel, and a royalty rate of 5% if and only if your advance sells out...so youâd better get out there and market! Wait, what do you mean you donât have a following? Guess youâre never selling out your advanceâŠ
Trad pub can generally be relied on to do some marketing - so this item is perhaps better seen as an indictment of more mid-sized Presses - but, basically, if an author has to do the majority of the work themselves, then why arenât they getting paid more? Whatâs the actual benefit to going the large press/trad pub route if itâs not going to get the book into more hands? Itâs especially strange that this continues to be a major issue when self-publishing (which also requires doing oneâs own marketing) garners 60%+ royalty rates. Yes, the author doesnât get an advance, and they donât get the cache of ~well I was published byâŠ~, but considering some Presses require parts of advances to get paid back if the initial run doesnât sell out, and cache doesnât put food on the table...pay models have really, really got to change.
-
9. Fanfiction writing doesn't count as writing experience
Hey there Basic White Dude, we see youâve graduated summa cum laude from A Big Fancy Expensive School. Of course weâll set you up to publish your first novel you havenât actually quite finished writing yet. Oh, Fanperson, youâve written 15 novels for your favorite fandom in the last 4 years? Get to the back of the line!
Do I really need to explain this? The only way to get better at writing is to write. Placing fanfiction on official trad pub âdo not interactâ lists is idiotic, especially considering many of the other items on this list. (They know how to engage readers! They have existing followings! They understand genre and tropes!) Being a fanfiction writer should absolutely be a marketable âI am a writerâ skill. Nuff said. (To be clear, Iâm not saying publishers should publish fanfiction, Iâm saying that being a fanfiction writer is relevant and important experience that should be given weight when considering an authorâs qualifications, similar to, say, publishing in a universityâs quarterly.)
-
10. Tagging conventions (read: lack thereof).
Oh, did I trigger you? Hahahaha. Good luck with that.
We rate movies so that people can avoid content they donât like. Same with TV shows and video games. Increasingly, those ratings arenât just âR - adult audiences,â either; they contain information about the nature of the story elements that have led to the rating (âblood and gore,â âalcohol reference,â âcartoon violence,â âdrug reference,â âsexual violence,â âuse of tobacco,â and many, many more). So why is it that I can read a book and, without warning, be surprised by incest, rape, graphic violence, explicit language, glorification of drug and alcohol use, and so so much more? That itâs left to readers to look up spoilers to ensure that theyâre not exposed to content that could be upsetting or inappropriate for their children or, or, or, is insane. So often, too, authors cling to âbut we donât want to give away our story,â as if video game makes and other media makers do want to give away their stories. This shouldnât be about author egos or ~originality~ (as if thatâs even a thing)...it should be about helping readers make informed purchasing decisions. Itâs way, way past time that major market books include content warnings.
Thank you for joining us, this has been our extended rant about how frustrated we are with traditional publishing. Helpful? No. Cathartic? Most definitely yes. đ€Ł

The failure of twitter is entirely the fault of a business management style rooted in asset-based methodologies that is in no way reflective of Twitter's structure as a business reliant on off-balance sheet intangibles.
To other accountants this will probably be real fucking stupid and to anyone who followed me for cosmere stuff this is going to sound utterly incomprehensible, but I am sleepy and have thoughts about intangibles and accounting, and how much we are growing to rely on them in business.
At the heart of the modern business structure is an accounting style foundationally rooted in asset (Things, Land, Stuff) and asset allocation (Turning cash into things, Land, and Stuff), where people are completely ignored as anything but an expense largely because it's extremely hard to estimate the value of a human life. Accounting's foundational roots are in asset-management practices with a presumption that management understands the value of human lives and will act accordingly.
Tesla is a company where it's wealth is foundationally rooted in what it owns and how it can use it- It's revenues are driven by the cars they produce, and that enables them to grow and develop while relying less on employees or labor. For context, they only spend about 5.3% of their revenue on research and development, with the majority of their wealth from asset costs. Twitter spends 23.49% of their revenue on R&D.
Twitter is a company foundationally rooted in intangibles and goodwill, and that is what drives their organization to be able to succeed- The people who run twitter and the tribal knowledge they hold, the customers who use twitter, and the advertisers valuation of those customers. They are a company that is not driven by advertisers, but by intangible assets that literally not listed on the balance sheet, and in which they invest all their money into developing (Hence the 23% in R&D).
In a more traditional asset-based business, Elon's decision would have made perfect sense, and is outright *recommended* by many trusted sources for management advice. But that's because those products are fundamentally driven by the assets the company controls, and not the employees who understand how the company works. Their success isn't tied to a particular employee, but rather to ensuring they have the stuff to sell and scale.
The problem is that Twitter doesn't exist as an asset-based company, but as an intangibles-based company. Twitters success is rooted in it's brand, it's users, and it's employees. If you're wondering why you're hearing less about accountants, it's because our asset-based accounting methodology *falls apart* when you're relying on and trying to capitalize intangibles. Because employees don't exist on the balance sheet, and Can't exist on the balance sheet. But they are the assets that foundationally drive the companies driven by intangibles. And the entire world is starting to rely less on the stuff you own and more and more on the people you know, even more than it used to do, with companies being up to 30-40% intangibles, which you can't even properly value because you have nothing in your own records to root it in, so you have to mostly just make a rough estimate about how much they're worth with stuff you dragged from the rest of the world which makes everything look so much better or worse and makes the books mean less and less.
So that's why Twitter is going to die in 3 days. Because Elon Musk tried to run the business like a car dealership. Without realizing that he fired all the cars. 10/10.
#Accounting#Noncosmere#Twitter#elon musk#Capitalism isn't a meritocracy#And it's days like this that make me regret choosing to pursue accounting.

Thank You, RBG
We are heartbroken. Supreme Court Justice and gender equality hero Ruth Bader Ginsburg died on Friday, Sept. 18. Her death is a painful loss for our country. She was a fierce and unapologetic warrior for equality, and her achievements are endless. As we mourn weâre also embracing our gratitude for her service to our country.
Cherishing RBGâs Legacy
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg committed her life to protecting the rights, freedoms, and health of people across the country â in particular women, communities of color, and others whose voices too often go unheard. She was a true trailblazer who inspired millions of girls and women to fight through sexism and discrimination to make American a better place to work, to live, and to love.Â
Her powerful words over the years, including her razor-sharp dissents, helped push our nation toward freedom and opportunity for all. Her spirit, values, and words will be deeply missed.
A Modern Revolutionary
Some revolutionaries shook up a society with anger burning and guns blazing. Others studied hard, knocked down an unfair system one peg at a time, and spoke truth to power while wearing a lace collar. That was Ruth Bader Ginsburg.Â
She got two mottoes from her mother, Celia Bader (who marched for womenâs suffrage):Â
âBe independent,â take care of yourself without being financially beholden to a man, and
âBe a lady,â don't allow emotions like anger to be so consuming they get in your way.
When Ruth Bader Ginsburg saw anything repugnant â like systemic discrimination â she would get straight to work. It wasnât easy. Over decades, Ruth Bader Ginsburg faced a slew of indignities. But she harnessed courage and resolve to strategically break down Americaâs sexist, unethical laws and institutions.Â
To honor the Notorious RBG, weâve collected our seven favorite facts about her life and her legacy.
7) RBG was defiant in the face of entrenched sexism in college and law school.
Most colleges didnât accept women in the 1950s, and Ruth Bader was one of the first to break the gender barrier. At Cornell University, she was sexually harassed by a professor, who offered answers to a test in exchange for sex. She confronted him: âI went to his office and I said, âHow dare you? How dare you do this?â And that was the end of that.âÂ
At Harvard Law School, she and the eight other women in her class of more than 500 students were ogled, ignored in the classroom, excluded from the library, and asked by the dean how they could possibly justify taking a seat away from a man. But that hostile environment didnât stop her.Â
She fought it with brain power and superhuman physical endurance. She was so obsessed with the law that sheâd regularly stay up until dawn studying. Well into her 80s, she retained her reputation for working until 3 a.m. and living on just two hours of sleep.Â
While she was kicking butt at the top of her classes, she was also taking care of her young daughter and sick husband. Martin (Marty) Ginsburg contracted testicular cancer and had extensive radiation therapy, which kept him from going to his own law school classes. So, RBG organized his friends to attend his classes, worked through their notes with Marty, and typed up Martyâs papers â all while doing her own schoolwork on top of it.Â
She tied for first in her class from Columbia Law School in 1959. She also was the first person to become a member of both the prestigious Harvard Law Review, and the Columbia Law Review â one of many of her unprecedented feats. She proved to those elite schools that a woman could succeed.
6) RBG showed the world what a partnership looks like in a husband-wife relationship.
Ruth Bader met Marty Ginsburg while they were both at Cornell University, and they forged an equal partnership from the beginning. He learned to cook so she didnât have to. Later, he lobbied for her seats on the Court of Appeals in D.C. and on the Supreme Court. And he gave up his law firm in New York to follow her to Washington â a shocking move at the time.Â
Hereâs how she put it at her 1993 Senate confirmation hearing:
âI surely would not be in this room today without the determined efforts of men and women who kept dreams of equal citizenship alive. I have had the great good fortune to share life with a partner truly extraordinary for his generation. A man who believed at age 18 when we met that a womanâs work, whether at home or on the job, is as important as a manâs. I became a lawyer when women were not wanted by most members of the legal profession. I became a lawyer because Marty supported that choice unreservedly.â
5.) RBG won a whopping five cases before the Supreme Court â and they all advanced the Constitutional protection of equal rights for all Americans.
As smart and accomplished as Ruth Bader Ginsburg was, no law firm would hire her after she graduated from law school. Law firms slammed the door in her face time after time because they only hired men. She realized that âbeing a woman was an impediment.â
As Ginsburg navigated the legal working world in the 1960s, she saw how thousands of state and federal laws were treating women as second-class citizens. At that time, most statesâ laws allowed employment termination for pregnancy, and let banks deny credit to women without a male co-signer. The Supreme Court had rejected every challenge to laws that treated women worse than men.
All this gender discrimination fueled Ginsburgâs drive for social justice. In the early 1970s, she followed the strategy of NAACP civil rights lawyer and Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, who helped dismantle Jim Crow laws case by case over many years â leading to Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, which outlawed racial segregation in schools in 1954. Like Marshall, Ginsburg centered her arguments on the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, which says all persons should be treated equally under the law.
Throughout the â70s, Ginsburg led the ACLUâs Women's Rights Project, for which she argued and won five landmark gender equality cases before the Supreme Court. As she said in the 2018 documentary RBG: "I knew that I was speaking to men who didn't think there was such a thing as gender-based discrimination, and my job was to tell them it really exists.â
These cases set the foundation for the countryâs laws against sex discrimination, and helped eliminate being male as the criteria for employment, pay, and benefits:
Two cases in 1975 and 1979 established the requirement that women serve on juries, recognizing that they should enjoy both the benefits and the responsibilities of our judicial system.
âThe vaunted woman's privilege viewed against history's backdrop simply reflects and perpetuates a certain way of thinking about women. Women traditionally were deemed lesser citizens.â
âRuth Bader Ginsburg, arguing before the Supreme Court (Duren v. Missouri, 1979)
An employment benefits case in 1973 required the U.S. military to equally distribute family-based benefits for service members regardless of sex.
âIn asking the Court to declare sex a suspect criterion, we urge a position forcibly stated in 1837 by Sara Grimke, noted abolitionist and advocate of equal rights for men and women. She said, âI ask no favor for my sex. All I ask of our brethren is that they take their feet off our necks.'â
â Ruth Bader Ginsburg, arguing before the Supreme Court (Frontiero v. Richardson, 1973)
Two cases in 1974 and 1975 threw out gender-based distinctions in survivorsâ benefits, granting widowers the same benefits as widows. RBG argued that while giving widows special treatment sounded nice, it wasnât. Withholding benefits to widowers devalued the work of their deceased wives.
âA gender line...helps to keep women not on a pedestal, but in a cage.â
âRuth Bader Ginsburg, arguing before the Supreme Court (Weinberger v. Wiesenfeld, 1975)
4) At her confirmation hearings, RBG openly declared that abortion access is a Constitutional right.
At her 1993 Supreme Court confirmation hearings, Ruth Bader Ginsburg showed what it looks like to uphold constitutional rights. Unlike recent Supreme Court nominees, she affirmatively declared the Constitutional right to safe, legal abortion. When Sen. Hank Brown (R-CO) grilled her about her views on abortion, she declared:
âBut you asked me about my thinking about equal protection versus individual autonomy, and my answer to you is it's both. This is something central to a woman's life, to her dignity. It's a decision that she must make for herself. And when Government controls that decision for her, she's being treated as less than a fully adult human responsible for her own choices.â
3) RBG wrote the historic decision ruling that state-funded schools must admit women.
In 1996, Justice Ginsburg wrote the Supreme Courtâs majority opinion in United States v. Virginia, which ruled that the Virginia Military Instituteâs men-only admission policy violated the 14th Amendmentâs equal protection clause. Justice Ginsburg destroyed the Instituteâs argument that its program wasnât suitable for women. Instead, she wrote that:
â[G]eneralizations about âthe way women are,â estimates of what is appropriate for most women, no longer justify denying opportunity to women whose talent and capacity place them outside the average description.â
The school has admitted women since then, and â as Justice Ginsburg predicted â they have made the school proud.
2) RBGâs dissent from the majority in Lilly Ledbetterâs case led to the passage a fair pay law.
In 2007, Justice Ginsburg dissented in the ruling against Lilly Ledbetter â a tire factory employee who learned, decades into her tenure, that she was being paid much less than men in the exact same supervisory role: She was making $3,727 per month, while her male counterparts were making between $4,286 and $5,236 per month. However, she lost the case because the Civil Rights Act had a statute of limitations for reporting on discrimination.Â
In her scathing dissent, Justice Ginsburg wrote that gender discrimination can be hidden for a long time and âthe ball is in Congressâs courtâ to change the rule. In 2009, Barack Obama signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which extended the Civil Rights Actâs statute of limitations and guarantees women equal pay for equal work.
1.) RBG put the smack down on TRAP laws in Whole Womanâs Health v. Hellerstedt.Â
In the landmark Whole Womanâs Health v. Hellerstedt case in 2016, the Supreme Court â including Justice Ginsburg â ruled that two abortion restrictions in Texas were unconstitutional because they would shut down most clinics in the state and cause Texans an âundue burdenâ on access to safe, legal abortion. The case exposed the lie that anti-abortion politicians have been peddling for years: that itâs somehow âsaferâ when the state imposes medically unnecessary, onerous targeted restrictions against abortion providers (TRAP) laws.Â
In her concurring opinion to the majority, Justice Ginsburg wrote:
âGiven those realities [that keep abortion access out of reach], it is beyond rational belief that H.B. 2 could genuinely protect the health of women, and certain that the law âwould simply make it more difficult for them to obtain abortionsâ... When a State severely limits access to safe and legal procedures, women in desperate circumstances may resort to unlicensed rogue practitioners... at great risk to their health and safety.â
With this historic decision, the Court reaffirmed the constitutional right to access legal abortion. This decision was a triumph for abortion access. And when one of the restrictions that Ginsburg helped strike down came up in another lawsuit this year, Ginsburg again helped lead the Court to protecting abortion access in a major Supreme Court victory for reproductive rights.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg rose for all of us. How will we work together to rise for her?
From day one, Justice Ginsburg recognized our constitutional right to control our bodies and our destinies. That is a legacy that cannot and must not depart with her.Â
Justice Ginsburg stood up for us. Now itâs our turn.Â
