Not Your Grandmother’s Doilies: New Exhibition Explores the History of Lace
The term “lace” today might summon images of over-the-top wedding dresses, intricate lingerie, or perhaps the doilies and table runners that adorned our grandmother’s table: sweet, decorative, and maybe a little kitsch. But when the latticed fabric first appeared in the 16th century, says Kaat Debo, director of the ModeMuseum (MoMU) in Antwerp, “it was […]

1) Traditional Jacket / Painted Fabric; Author: anonymous; Date: 1750 - 1800; Provenance: India / Friesland; Provider: MoMu - ModeMuseum Provincie Antwerpen; Copyright: free access.
2) Traditional Jacket / Painted Fabric; Author: anonymous; Date: 1770 - 1790; Provenance: India / Nederlands; Provider: MoMu Antwerp; Copyright: free access.
These jackets (jak) are representative of 18th century costumes. The handpainted cotton fabrics were imported from India. Garments have low square necklines, pleated flared skirts, linen linings, and elbow length sleeves with curved hem details. Jackets feature a ‘stomacher’ - a panel that fills in the front opening of the bodice. These were sometimes sewn or held in place with lacings, but the labels notes hook and eye closures. The extension of the stomacher below the waist was typical for the late 18th century.
Garment construction appears to be European. The motives of the handpainted fabrics - the multi-color floral and the red and white fabric (called ‘milk and blood’) are European-style, resembling those seen in crewel work and later printed fabrics. It is likely these fabrics were produced for the European market. Garment construction is extremely detailed - the front of one of the jackets is made up of 22 pieces, 7 pieces are used in the back. There is evidence of alterations made at some point.
MoMu (Mode Museum) is located in Antwerp, Belgium. Founded in 2002, in addition to contemporary Belgian fashion the museum also studies historic and ethnic costumes and has an extensive collection of textiles and lace.
These jackets are part of the textiles library.
