Wayfinder February - week 1 recap

The first week of Wayfinder February is over and I wanted to send some love to the creators and to make sure nobody who loves the Hooked Wayfinder ship misses out on these wonderful stories and arts. We've still got a few exciting weeks ahead of us with more fics and arts headed our ways! So keep checking this tag on the hookedwayfinder blog for more fanworks.

Fandom is community - something which we could philosophize about, but which I don't think everyone fully understands in the same way. To me, a fanart or fanfic is basically just a person playing with dolls and showing their dolls to the world, often hoping others will say: "I see this and I love this! I wish I had come up with this idea!" Or in some cases "Ew, so much horror! ...Is there more?" or "Hot stuff! Hot stuff! Why is it so hot in here?" We're playing and having fun, and there's joy in the creation, but certainly also in the reception among the other fans. That's why I want to encourage you to leave comments if you have not done so yet - to both the arts and the fics you read - our creators deserve it and it is the best way to secure we will get MORE Hooked Wayfinder creations after the event is over too. Give these creators their daily dopamine shots, they deserve it! Spread a little positivity in the world, it's 100% free and not a waste of your time to make another person smile!

And now, for a quick recap (with links!) of this week's works.

Day 1: Wonderful mershark!Maui art by zabchan, including a free little ficlet by me - definitely worth checking out all the beautiful details in this.

Day 2: Athena stepped out of her comfort zone and wrote an English story for us - a spy!Moana AU where she's a demigod doing some spying in modern-day Paris and then runs into Maui 2000 years along the line. Supercute! Go read.

Day 3: We had no idea what Mars's art account was until she posted this and we were BLOWN AWAY - (and I think I saw her old art for The Queen's Gambit years ago but never linked it to be our Mars) - she drew us a supercozy drawing of Moana just chilling with her bestie Maui the sharkhead.

Day 4: It was my turn! Finding Ohana is set in modern day Hawaii and inspired by Lilo and Stitch. Simea, dealing with the loss of her parents, is quite a handful in this first chapter but luckily Maui (and his shaved ice cream) comes to Moana's rescue!

Day 5: Zabchan treated us again to one of her superdetailed drawings - and you gotta love Maui's expression in this one - and the idea is supercute too!

Day 6: My turn again! Chapter 2 took the story to the beach, where Maui showed off his surfing skills and Moana fell a little deeper in love with the guy. (And we met up with Matangi too!)

Day 7: Moonbeam worked on her "Flower Sickness" fic for weeks - it's angsty, it's smutty, it's got a little bit of body horror but it's honestly so freaking good - and unlike me she's not afraid to drop 16K words in a day!

Sooo just got back from Moana 2, I genuinely really enjoyed it!! It definitely wasn't as good as the 1st one (most of her crew characters were annoying/distracting). The music kept pulling lines/themes from the 1st movie which I actually really liked but a couple of them fell flat for me. But oooohhh my dear MoanaxMaui heart was fed with this one their scenes were so magnetic and pulled me right back into loving their dynamic. "Beyond" is very much stuck in my head now 🤪

I'm watching Moana again for the first time in months since I saw it in theaters, and I completely forgot how amazing the banter between Moana and Maui is

Moana role players wanted

I'm looking for people who will do a moana roleplay with me. Preferably a hooked wayfinders roleplay (moanaXmaui) go ahead and messege me on the private chat if interested.

You have earned my respect, @thattheaternerdoverthere​ . I know people are HEAVILY divided on this particular subject and they all have understandable reasons (especially if they are personal), but I respect those who don’t act like fools and show far more maturity over this whole mess.

I recall when MoanaxMaui was a thing, but ALL the shippers preferred her as an adult. Few to none of the antis gave the shippers grief over making her an adult here on tumblr. Same for those who ship adult Sarah and Jareth from Labyrinth together. They all understood that these are characters that are allowed to grow up and that those pairings AREN’T intended to be one hundred percent canon (ESPECIALLY in my first example and I like that Moana is the first ‘official’ Disney princess to not have even so much as a future potential love interest). I kind of wish that were the case in the Beetlejuice fandom. 

I understand why people don’t like ‘may-december’ romances, but they shouldn’t send death threats. It’s like when people were being toxic towards that one girl who drew skinny versions of Rose Quartz from Steven Universe (to the point of telling her she should kill herself and BOY  can I imagine how hard that would come back to haunt them after a certain reveal on the show) or that story where a crazed Voltron fan threatened to release secret images unless they made their favorite ship canon. I’m not saying the randoms for both are completely toxic–it’s just there are better ways to respond to things that upset us sometimes.

Adding to that, while I don’t view beetlebabes as canon in all three adaptions (ESPECIALLY in the original film), I am happy that in at least two of them, Beetlejuice and Lydia are able to be good friends and that their friendship is genuinely adorable to watch (with ‘That Beautiful Sound’ being my favorite of the songs from the musical). 

Of course, this is also one war that I have no interest in being a part in. So thank you for being mature about your opinions.

Do i ship beetlebabes? No. Do I feel the need to harass the people who do over a fictional ship that may not be appealing to me? NOPE. Do I hate people who ship it? No not at all some of them are pretty cool (and really good artists too!!). Let the shippers do their thing you don’t have to interact with them but they are still people who shouldn’t be harassed for having a different opinion AND THAT my friends is the real tea

the ship makes me uncomfortable, but the shippers are allowed to ship it as long as moana is of age consent.

Time for an event!

We're organizing an event on our discord where we are trying to get creatives of the Hooked Wayfinder fandom to post on tumblr daily in the month of February. Since we know there's not that many of us, we're trying to fill up the first half of the month first (before Valentine's day), but should the response become greater, we'll continue into the second half too!

We want to post some new and original Hooked Wayfinder stuff daily - these can be fics, meta, edits, arts or anything else you can think of! You can participate one or several days, depending on how much stuff you prepare.

If you do not wish to join discord but would still like to be assigned a date to post your stuff, just send us a message and we'll get back to you with a date and more information on the event as it draws nearer! Don't hesitate to reach out if you're interested in participating - and when the event starts, don't forget to send our creatives a ton of love and appreciation for all the hard work they do!
