Been thinking about this lately but, which of the Kid pirates do you think has the highest alcohol tolerance? How many shots of whiskey can they do?
I feel like Wire would only get 3-4 shots in before he falls over and starts french kissing the floor.
XD
I think their tolerances are higher than we'd expect. Pirating life does that to you, especially since low-level grog/ale would have less sanitary worries over the long haul than water.
But that's maybe a bit too much logistical realism in our funny pirate anime.
I think 3-4 shots is enough to get everyone chill. A couple people tipsy. 5-6 shots and there's drunk laughter scattering about even though nothing really funny was actually said.
7 shots and maybe Bubblegum is wearing a pretty pink bonnet and getting the other crew members to call him pretty. Because of his bonnet.
8 shots and a good bit of the crew (Mosh, Pomp, UK, Gig, REck, Papas and Compo) are starting a mosh pit, except there's no music and it turns into a game of duck, duck, goose.
9 shots and Heat's drawing his tattoo design on Wire with grease crayons, and Wire's letting him. Quincy is pulling small arms out of her hat and Hip and Hop are just clear headed enough to confirm that all the bullets were removed earlier.
10 shots in and Kid is looking a little regretful, but he's not going to admit it yet, and Moai and Jaguar are out - they keep stopping and starting Row, Row, Row Your Boat and mixing it up with In The Hall of the Mountain King.
11 shots and nothing changes, but a few duck, duck, goose players are asleep.
12 shots in and Kid is telling Killer how pretty his eyes are, but Killer's still wearing his mask. He's respond, but he actually fell asleep just after the 10th shot and no one noticed.
13 shots in, it's just House and Emma, but House concedes, because in all their years as a crew, no one has out drank Emma, and hardly showing signs of being tipsy as it is.

Folded a piece of pink paper letter style, and drew a big red heart on it with the inscription, "MOAI - will you be my valentine?"
On the inner top fold, wrote, "If this should fall into your hand, revolve."
On the middle fold, wrote, "Roses are red, violets are blue, you'd look cute with yellow stockings on you!"
On the bottom fold, wrote, "PS - Smile! 😊"
Left it on one of the tables for someone to discover at lunch.

Everything You Need to Know About Crystals: Black Obsidian
Black Obsidian (The Regal Warrior of Stones)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Color: Black, Dark Brown
Hardness: 5-5.5 (softer than quartz)
Rarity: Easy to Acquire
Type: Igneous Rock (Comes from a Volcano)
Chakra Association: Root
Angel: Uriel
Deities: Pele, Tezcatlipoca, Itzpapalotl and Sekhmet
Element: Fire, Earth
Astrological Signs: Sagittarius, Scorpio, Aries
Planet: Saturn, Pluto
Origin: Anywhere with Volcanic Activity
Powers: Protection, Grounding, Clarity, Releasing Blockage, Drawing out Stress, Creativity, Divination and Scrying, Negativity Banishment, Transformation and Absorption
Crystals It Works Well With: Howlite, Malachite
How is it Created: Obsidian is a black volcanic glass, formed when molten lava hits cold water or air and solidifies. It is composed of silicon dioxide (quartz) and many impurities which allows it to take different shapes and colors. Black obsidian gets it coloring from iron and magnesium.
History: The earliest obsidian tools can be dated back to the Oldowan, at the dawn of the Paleolithic/Stone Age (2.6 million- 10,000 BCE). Different origins of this rock can be found in Britain, Italy, Mexico, and the USA. In Egypt, obsidian knives were used in ceremonial circumcisions, as well as making mirrors (scrying mirrors for most) and other decorations in tombs. The word “Obsidian” was first used by a Roman explorer, Obsius, who “discovered” it in Ethiopia. In the Americas, Obsidian was used as a symbol of Tezcatlipoca, the chief god of the Aztec religion. Tezcatlipoca means “smoking mirror” which is why a lot of the Mayan priest used the glass rock for scrying mirrors like the Egyptians did. On the Eastern Islands, obsidian was used to make the eyes of the Moai statues before they were lost. The indigenous tribes of North America used pieces of obsidian to make arrowheads, spears and even knives by using an antler in order to carefully form different shapes.
What It Can Do:
Grounds the soul and spiritual forces into the physical plane, making it possible to manifest more spiritual energy
Increases one’s self control
Forces you to face your true self
Brings imbalance and shadow qualities to the surface to release them
Repels negativity and disperses self-hating thoughts
Powerful meditation aid
Great for scrying and divination as the glass allows you to look to see the “clear truth”
Can heal you after a spiritual or mental attack
Was used in the past during ritual for healing physical disorders
How to Charge:
Sit with the stone in the palm of your hand and enter a light meditation. Use your thoughts to charge the stones with desires of protection and make sure the thoughts are clear and concise.
Use high vibration to amplify the crystal
Use a singing bowl to send sound energy into it
Place it in a bed of Himalayan salt and let it sit for 48 hours
If you work with a sun or moon deity, I have noticed charging it in the sun or moonlight with the idea of protection helps to charge it as well
How to Cleanse:
Run under water (not hot just lukewarm) for a minute
Create a saltwater solution and submerge it for up to 24 hours
Burn herbs or incense over the obsidian with the intention of cleansing (I personally use sandalwood incense for this)
Leave your stone under the full moon to cleanse and retrieve in the morning
Bury your obsidian in your garden for 48 hours
How to Get the Best Out of It:
Wear a black obsidian bracelet. The wrist area is a highly energetic zone because it has nearly direct access to the bloodstream. This (in my opinion) is the best place to have obsidian to create a powerful shield and help with manifestation.
For lighter dosage, use an obsidian ring.
Crystal Grid:
Letting Go (Triangle Grid)
Mantra: “I release everything that no longer serves me”
Center Stone: Smokey Quartz Tower
Secondary Stones: Obsidian, Malachite, Rhodonite, Citrine
Best Moon Phase: Waning or Dark Moon
Best Day: Saturday

2/30: Prometheus attempts to establish themes
(Previous) | (Index) | (Next)
Several minutes into Prometheus, we have had no dialog, and we are going to wish that it stayed that way.
Tumblr media
This is by little fault of the actors themselves. They all put in solid work. Many of the problems come from the writing, and others from the mismatch between their characterization what we’d call “informed traits”: What the movie tells us we should know about these characters.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Elizabeth Shaw and Charlie Holloway are archaeologists. We see them with a dig team on the Isle of Skye, where they have just discovered their latest piece of evidence towards a radical theory. They have noticed something astounding that nobody else has dared to consider: evidence of alien contact with Earth, recorded in the art of disparate cultures from around the world. We, the audience, already know that they’re right.
And we, the audience, know that the History Channel has had kooks on it for ages, ranting about Ancient Aliens. We’ve all seen the meme guy.
Tumblr media
Okay. Let's try to meet this movie where it wants to be, thematically. These are its first two scenes, it's still establishing its direction, and nothing openly egregious has happened yet. We will ignore nitpicky stuff, like the fact that this previously undiscovered dig site is right next to a well-known tourist spot on Skye with 400 reviews on Google Maps.
This movie is establishing an existential premise for its themes. It implies aliens had some hand in shaping not just our culture, but our evolution. The questions it invites at this time are equally existential: why would they do that? What was their purpose here? What was their purpose for us? Why did they stop contacting Earth?
Whether life has a purpose is one of the core debates of philosophy and religion. This movie is beginning with the premise that terrestrial life does have a purpose, implied by the deliberate sacrifice of a thinking being to shape it. This supposition could create a more focused exploration of one possibility, within its narrative space.
I think it fails to deliver on this. The writing specifically fails to deliver on this, which will become apparent once we have more dialog. But there is also an issue with the framing of this premise, which the movie ultimately does not manage to avoid. An issue of cultural context.
Because this is where I, as somebody with a background in history, start to brace. The idea of extraterrestrials visiting ancient peoples is a discredited mid-20th century theory, which stems from ignorance of the historical record, and assumption of ignorance and incapability of ancient peoples to achieve great things, particularly outside of the cultures placed in the prized pedigree of European civilization.
Tumblr media
Such theorists look at the Great Pyramid of Giza and scoff at the idea that it could have been made without outside help, completely unaware of the century of more experimental pyramid-building that had preceded it, and the fact that we have written records that help us chart the progress of Egyptian mathematics for six hundred years prior to its construction.
They point to the Ramayana–likely written down around the same time that the Ancient Greeks were getting along just fine without aliens–and they say that the flying castles and chariots described in the text must’ve been aliens, who were mistaken for gods, and technological achievements such as rust-resistant iron must have been alien-made. Never mind that the period had a lively scholarly culture that was incorporating ideas from their Greek and Egyptian counterparts, and the people of the Indus Valley built well-planned metropolises with the world’s first known urban sanitation systems three thousand years before that.
They think the Moai of Rapanui, some of which were being erected while Shakespeare was writing his plays, were erected with the help of aliens. The actual answer, as usual, seems to be much more interesting: the Moai walked there:.
youtube
This is what ideas of ancient aliens are culturally tied to. You throw this into a movie, and even with the foreknowledge that they’re going to be proven right, I start out skeptical of these people from moment one. I was less likely to give them the benefit of the doubt, and less able to suspend my disbelief around them specifically. This will not get easier as we go.
Which is unfortunate, because most of the next scene is back to being phenomenal, and managed to bounce me back into going along with their premise.
...A side note as we close this out: Getting way too deep into the weeds here, but the art style of the cave paintings is worth mentioning. It appears to be a mashup of two famous cave’s painting styles: The animals are near-replicas of those famously seen in Chauvet (35,000 years old), and the humans and attendant dots are somewhat similar to Lascaux (17,000 years old), both caves in France. Here's an excellent little video from Tom Scott about the former, and the way that you can go see the cave paintings without endangering the site itself. There's a similar museum for Lascaux, shown below!
youtube
Tumblr media
I say the human figures are somewhat similar to Lascaux, but I can’t find a match for the style anywhere. The closest I can find is from Tassili n’Ajjer in Algeria (6000 BC) or the Cave of Beasts in the Gilf Kebir mountains in Egypt (5000+ BC). This is because depictions of humanoid figures in european cave art are rare–ranging from a single bird-head figure in Lascaux, to the possible hoax at La Marche.
This produces an interesting implication, if we take the movie’s premise at face value. If humanoid figures were avoided as subjects for cave art for thousands of years, their inclusion here is especially significant. Perhaps indicating that the alien visitors instructed that some visual representation of this scene to be made, or did so themselves. Thus, it is slotted in amongst the pre-existing animal art, creating a culture clash.
…However, cave lions never made it as far north as Skye. Their known northern range tapped out at about London. While it’s certainly possible that people could’ve traveled that far during this period, local animals tend to be the focus of cave paintings. So we’re getting the visual sense that a French stone age painter was doing a residency at Skye. Amusing, but odd.

Rock Swag Tournament Round 1: Igneous Rocks Part 11
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tuff is an igneous rock...or maybe a sedimentary rock based on who you ask! It is made of lithified volcanic ash (lithification is the process by which particles of stuff become rock, and volcanic ash is sand grain-sized pieces of ejected volcanic matter).
Tumblr media
Tuff generally also has pieces of all kinds of other stuff, as well. As long as stuff that is 2 mm or smaller makes up 75% of the rock, it will be considered tuff. Anything less than 75% volcanic ash, and the rock is described as "tuffaceous."
Fun fact: the Moai on Rapa Nui (Easter Island) are made of tuff! Also, according to one submitter, "this is one of the few volcanic rocks that can be made into a really lovely paint. Specifically a vaguely purplish gray" COOL!
Ignimbrite could be considered a type of tuff, but it is more specifically a rock formed from a pyroclastic flow deposit. Pyroclastic flows are one of the deadliest geological phenomena as they are burning hot clouds of gas and debris that race down the sides of volcanoes during some eruptions!
Ignimbrites can have more and larger pieces of volcanic debris, but they could also simply be tuffs that have welded due to the high heat from an eruption. Ignimbrites also may contain fiamme, which are "flame-shaped" lapilli (volcanic tephra or debris between 2 and 64 mm big) that have been flattened or sheared during deposition.
Tumblr media
More on pyroclastic flows under the cut, because they are fascinating in that they are dangerous and I must talk about them.
Pyroclastic flows are blisteringly hot and terrifyingly fast clouds of volcanic gas and assorted tephra: volcanic material that can include ash (particles less than 2 mm), lapilli (between 2 and 64 mm), and blocks and bombs (greater than 64 mm).
They flow (violently rocket) down the side of volcanoes after explosive eruptions. You generally don't have to worry about pyroclastic flows on Kīlauea any time soon because those eruptions are mostly lava flows (which you can usually outrun). However, some of the most famous volcanic eruptions from recorded human history--Mount St. Helens in 1980, Krakatoa in 1883, and Vesuvius in 79 CE--were accompanied by pyroclastic flows.
Pyroclastic flows can be triggered a number of ways. Some examples are lava domes collapsing and causing an avalanche of sorts, part of the volcano exploding or collapsing in one direction (like Mount St. Helens), or the plume of debris and gas that is shot vertically into the air during an eruption collapsing back down to the surface (like Mount Vesuvius).
There is no outrunning a pyroclastic flow. They flow down the side of volcanoes and across the surrounding landscape at typical speeds upwards of 80 km/h (50 mph), but they can reach speeds of several hundred km/h. These clouds of debris are also several hundred degrees Celsius. You do not survive a pyroclastic flow!
If you would like to see what one of these looks like, I have two videos. Please be warned that because pyroclastic flows are so deadly, one of these two videos discusses deaths related to a specific eruption.
This video is from a documentary (I do not know the name of the film) and the beginning shows the genesis of the pyroclastic flow: the lava dome collapses and causes an avalanche. The pyroclastic flow then moves along a stream valley and close to a nearby town. CW: This video mentions the number of deaths directly related to this eruption and pyroclastic flow. There is footage of a vehicle and a person fleeing the pyroclastic flow, but the town they are in is are far enough away that the pyroclastic flow does not reach their location, and they survive. The potentially triggering part of the video begins at 0:24.
This video shows a pyroclastic flow going into the ocean. CW: As far as I can see, there are no people or animals in the path of the pyroclastic flow in this video and so there are presumably no deaths associated with this eruption.

Hey, really love your succession meta, I hope this is welcome in your ask box. Idk if this is something you talked about already, but there is this persuasive assumption in the general fandom space that roman was the only kid who suffered physical abuse ever that in my opinion isnt really supported in the text/subtext. The way the past abuse of all the roys is talked about, to me, always implied a wealth of countless, other traumatic experiences that are simply not talked about and may very well be physical abuse. To me it feels like it was set up this way to fire up the viewers imagination and illustrate the sheer, unspeakable magnitude of the abuse. I just cant see Logan never losing his temper and getting physical with the other sibs but I struggle to put into words why. What are your thoughts on this? Do you think Rome was the only kid facing physical abuse? Youre always so eloquent in your analysis and demonstrate a complex understanding of dv dynamics. I appreciate your work :)
Hey! Thank you for your kind words, anon, and it’s definitely welcome in my inbox!
Yeah, I’ve noticed that assumption about Roman a lot too, and it’s not one I personally agree with, although I do understand why people make it. Roman is, after all, the only one of the four children that the show explicitly depicts receiving physical abuse, and he’s the only one who really has his abuse talked about by the other children (interestingly, on both occasions Roman’s abuse is actually weaponised against other characters, not against Roman. Kendall uses it as a way to try and hurt their father in 4.02, and Shiv uses it as a way to say that Kendall deserves greater punishment from their father than he’s receiving in 2.01).
I actually would say that we’ve had pretty explicit evidence that Kendall received physical abuse too, namely in the way that Logan came at him at Connor’s ranch after Kendall’s relapse in 1.07 (especially because I’d argue Kendall was doing in that scene what Roman has done a few times now by seeking out the hit, and the reason Logan held off was less about not wanting to, and more that he punishes his children by not giving them what they want), and in Logan hitting Iverson with the tin of cranberries in 1.05. I talked about the latter in this post, but I’ve always read the blocking of Kendall behind Iverson as a way of having a flashback without having a flashback, and the way that the episode ties Kendall and Iverson’s experiences as the same I think underscores that.
(It’s hard to comment on this particular point without seeing the scripts, but Arian Moayed has said in an interview too that the script for 4.04 had Stewy say that he’d seen Logan through a shoe at Kendall which I do think is likely meant to echo what Shiv says about Logan beating Roman with a shoe in 2.01 too, but given the scene was condensed, I’ll leave it out as canonical evidence at this point).
As for Shiv and Connor, yeah, I do think there was physical abuse for both of them as well, and I think it was probably fairly common for Connor when he was very young, and probably infrequent enough for Shiv for her to push it down (honestly though, given her character, I wouldn’t even be surprised if a part of her re-wrote it in her head as a positive after the fact. Getting hit means, after all, that she’s one of the boys).
So it does beg the question of why Roman’s abuse is easier for them all to acknowledge. I have a few theories about that, but ultimately, I think it comes down to an adolescent othering of Roman by Shiv and Kendall, and all four of their relative proximity to each other in their formative years.
Alan Ruck has said that Connor’s about fifteen years older than Kendall which puts him in a unique situation growing up where I imagine there’s a lot about his childhood through to his young adulthood that the Golden Trio simply don’t know due to the age gap. They obviously know bits and pieces – what happened to Connor’s mother for instance, Logan’s temporary abandonment, and the situation with the cake – but I’d generally say that those are life events that scaffold a childhood, they don’t provide the detail of it.
The child desertion that came with Logan’s temporary abandonment too would also have been extremely formative to Connor as a character. We don’t know when this was (although I do have my own theories on that too), but it would’ve fundamentally changed any existing dynamic between Connor and Logan, and I think we see that quite clearly in the man Connor is. His people pleasing, his co-dependency, his need to control the terms of his relationships (notable in the entire context of his relationship with Willa), his fear of rejection, and his fawn response to certain situations are all symptomatic of childhood abandonment. I imagine a lot of that started after Logan’s desertion, but then likely were compounded with Logan’s re-entry into his life, and I think that grew into his sort of subservience and performed affability which was likely inherently tied to the fear of being abandoned again.
In that sense, I think there was probably less physical abuse with Connor as he got older because he learnt how to navigate their father’s temper and stopped testing it / always acquiesced out of a fear of being deserted again. If most of his physical abuse was when he was a child or a teenager, well, Kendall, Roman and Shiv hadn’t even been born, there’s already a remove for them in terms of their relation to it.
With Kendall, Roman and Shiv, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about Roman being sent away to school in Delaware while Kendall and Shiv were both living with their father still and going to school in Manhattan. There’s a childhood separation there when it comes to Roman, yes, which breeds its own sort of ‘othering’, which I’ll come back to, but I do think there’s a lot of evidence in the show that depicts Kendall and Shiv as forming something between a ‘half and half’ and a ‘trauma-shield’ sibling relationship.
I’m getting a bit scientific here, so I hope you don’t mind, but a half and half sibling relationship is described as consisting of ‘the reenactment of traumatic events with their sibling due to the flawed attachments the sibling has to their caregiver. This sibling relationship is often the most violent, and is seen as a love-hate relationship with each other. This often plays out as the siblings’ relationship becomes too important as a substitute source of nurturing and threatening as a potential cause for abandonment. The siblings are confused about their psychological connection to a caregiver, and act out a push/pull relationship with each other to achieve maximum comfort from that caregiver.’
On the other hand, the trauma shield sibling relationship is when siblings ‘use each other as a shield from the abuse and interrupt the development process. They become fixated at the same developmental level and exhibit similar interpretations of their struggles despite the chronological age difference.’
The show regularly depicts Kendall and Shiv as being mirrors to one another – they are the winning dog, the rightful heir, the only real competition to one another, and now the only two to be parents and continue the lines of succession – and I think we’ve seen the effect that’s had on both their lives. They have moments of genuine intimacy and trust, they defend each other, they reach for each other when things are blowing up and become active participants in each other’s attacks on others, just as they also are the most ruthless with one another, the most violent, they weaponise each other’s weaknesses (both real and perceived) and have tried to ‘kill’ each other more than any other iteration of the siblings.
I also think that they both are in extreme denial about the abuse they received, and I think that they enable that in each other and shield each other from the realities of it which is easier to do when Connor and Roman weren’t there for it, and easier to do when they have each other to reiterate the artifice of their lives. God, one of the things that’s so great about the karaoke confrontation in 4.02 is that it kind of lays that out. Kendall and Shiv work together in that scene in a way that shuts Roman and Connor out at best and at worst uses their abuse and neglect to make a point while never saying anything about what Logan’s done to them. Shiv might bring up Logan advising Tom on the lawyers, but even that is a way around the things we’ve seen Logan do to her, and Kendall’s literally behind her the whole time. They’re in-step in their refusal to acknowledge what their father’s done to them, just as they’re in-step in forcing their brothers’ abuse out into the open to make a point.
I think this dynamic likely established itself around the time Roman was sent away to school, because I think Roman being sent away fed into Kendall and Shiv’s shared narrative that they were the prized children. It likely did have this degree of othering for Roman which emphasised his perceived weakness in the eyes of all three of the Golden Trio, and I think he likely had readjustment periods when coming home for the holidays that did see him hit more. I think those periods likely let Kendall and Shiv off the proverbial hook until he inevitably went back to school, where they could control their own abuse narratives again through their shared understanding of what the ‘story’ was.
This has gotten very long, haha, so look! This is a roundabout way of saying that I think Logan’s parenting style has been divide and conquer for as long as he’s been a parent, and that that has coloured all four of their understandings of their own abuse. The difference is that Connor and Roman were cast out, and the fact of being cast out at all means that abuse and neglect has a light shone upon it. It gets some oxygen, it gets to breathe, which makes it real. Kendall and Shiv weren’t cast out, they were kept together in their father’s house in Manhattan, and I think getting to stay behind closed doors in the dark let them hide even from Connor and Roman. It didn’t see the light, it didn’t get any air, so it was never real. I think it allowed them the ability to hide, deny or re-write their abuse, and I think they used (and still use) each other to do it.

What's the Magic Word?
Chapter 35: Rowena the Pirate
The finale
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“WE’RE UNSTOPPABLE! THE KID PIRATES WILL DOMINATE THE NEW WORLD AND FIND THE ONE PIECE BECAUSE WE NEVER BACK DOWN!!”
Kid screamed until he was hoarse over the deck as the crew celebrated the success of their heist.
“FUCK YEAH!”
“WE WHIPPED THEIR ASSES, DESTROYED THEIR SHIPS, BRUISED BIG MOM’S EGO, AND ARE ONE STEP CLOSER TO MAKING ME KING OF THE PIRATES!!”
Heat excitedly blasted fire into the air alongside the others who began shooting off their guns.
Another keg was tapped and foam spurted along the floor and tables as the pirates eagerly refilled their drinks.
Papas, Moai, Killer, Haikei and Dive brought out plates of bread, fish, pasta, meat still on the bone, and other savory dishes that wafted over the salty brine. Spreading the food over the beer soaked tables and greedily taking their portions before the others reached the tables.
While Oscar and Jaguar hauled chests and sacks of stolen treasure inside the ship, Compo kept supplying Rowena more gold, soft metals, and all the jewels they stole. The Witch was in the middle of crafting a giant crown for the ship’s figurehead.
“OI! EVERYONE LISTEN UP!” Kid suddenly demanded. “I want every one of ya to take a piece of gold treasure you looted today and give it to Rowena. We’re gonna seal our pieces into the crown for our ship! We built it with our bare hands, we have dominated the enemies with those same hands, and we will reap all the wealth in this world just like we did here!”
“YES CAPTAIN!” They rejoiced.
Throughout the partying, members of the crew stopped by the bow to give their contribution to Rowena. Every few stragglers would attract a crown of braggarts that rehashed and slightly embellished their roles in the fight against the Big Mom Pirates. Each story drowned out with music and rising laughter as they dumped on each other with competing stories, calling each other liars and cowards, and falling down to good natured drunk wrestling.
Kid personally made sure everyone had given a piece of gold to Rowena before contributing his own.
A golden bullet.
Rowena used it as a stud on one of the crown points. Right below the bullet, she vertically laid down a large pair of sleeve cuffs in the shape of golden sprinkled donuts.
“You weren’t kidding about the donut obsession, hmm?”
“A serious man never jokes about his donuts, Kid.”
They stepped down to the main deck to join in the madness, and Rowena was soon swarmed by pirates asking her questions about her great deception. Of course, it had already been told and widely exaggerated, but she had to admit, it was a great ruse.
“How did you get Katakuri to overlook the scam?” Dive tugged on Rowena’s dress hem.
Hip answered for the Witch, “She manipulated the marine ship to make it look like were dirty marines and they had her hostage looking for an exchange.”
“Yeah but Rowena sold it when she looked all tattered and like a kicked puppy on the deck, giving those big ole eyes while weeping out ‘Please help me Kata-chan!’ It was theater!” Noe thumped Rowena’s back.
“Ok I didn’t look that pathetic,” the Witch protested, stealing Noe’s glass and downing it. “But I wasn’t controlling that one marine that made that disgusting joke, I think that’s what really lit the fire in Kata’s eyes and under his ass. For that he has my genuine gratitude! Don’t think I’ll ever be able to be in the same vicinity as him without him trying to kill me now though.”
Why, you like him or somethin’?” Kid scoffed.
“Kid, I had to break down jokes for him once.”
That made the Captain howl with laughter, and even though the jealousy was superficial and for show, he appreciated that she entertained the bit in front of the others.
They had to practically fight the crowd to get to the food, and even then they were hardly left alone. It wasn’t unwelcome, just a bit much, especially the drunker the pirates got and the weepier they became at the realization that come morning, Rowena would be gone.
Kid tried to be patient, tried to be kind even. But if he was interrupted one more time by his subordinates, Kid could be liable to start tossing people overboard.
As if sensing this, Killer swooped in and began to make a toast to the crew. As he started with loud platitudes and drew everyone’s attention, he nodded to Kid who nodded back gratefully. As subtly as they could, Rowena and Kid dashed to the mizzenmast and climbed up to the crow’s nest.
Smaller than it’s counterpart on the main mast, it made up for its size with its accommodations.
It held a small cabinet with wine, liquor and someone had even left behind a bag of chocolate. It was theirs now. Reclining on the cushioned bench that encircled the nest, they could barely hear the cheering or sound of music being played from their height.
“I’d do anything for this night to never end,” Kid finally sighed.
“I know,” Rowena tucked herself under his chin and kissed his throat. “I’m going to call you every day, write you a letter every other week, I’ve got projection pretty much nailed now so we could even get a little frisky from time to time.”
“I put an extension on the snails. Its set to record and store messages if you aren’t able to answer when I call, or vice versa. Just, one more way to be able to hear your voice whenever I want.”
“Has anyone ever told you before how romantic you are? That’s the sweetest thing I’ve ever heard.”
He blushed, “No.”
“Well you are. I thought you were joking about the princess treatment.”
“When have I ever made a joke?”
“I laugh every time you open your mouth,” Rowena quipped.
Kid chuckled back before retorting, “You never seem to mind my mouth when its between your legs hmm?”
Flirting and teasing about their first night in the main crow’s nest, he peppered her with kisses, soft bites and a few shallow hickies as she goaded him back about how he had to get drunk in order to ask but not ask for a kiss.
Abandoning the rhetoric, Rowena wrapped her arms around his neck and marked him back, passionately pressing against his soft lips, her tongue fighting his for dominance. Melting into each other, their clothes were quickly abandoned as they took advantage of their last night together to desecrate the second nest.
When they finally emerged, it was the middle of the night and the deck was empty. Hand in hand, they walked down the length of the deck until the reached the crowned figurehead. Jumping over it, the couple sat just above the snout of the Punk’s dinosaur head.
Watching the waxing moon’s reflection on the undisturbed water – it looked as if the sky and ocean were mirroring each other. Mesmerized, they watch in peaceful silence simply enjoying each other’s company. Cuddled together, wrapped in an oversized fur blanket, and whispering stories of childhood lores and fascinations to each other well into the night
Had either one of them looked over the side of the snout, they would have noticed that something long, and slippery had curled and hoisted itself on one of the Punk’s teeth. The tip of the creatures yellow-hued tail floated atop the water before it pulled back all together and coiled in the shadows inside the mouth. Silently listening to the quiet chatter and eyeing the horizon warily.
As the shades of the sky slowly grew lighter, Kid subconsciously pulled the blanket tighter and higher above them in their sleep as the first rays of dawn peeked over the sea. Once it became too warm to ignore, they properly woke up and headed to bed for the last precious hours of sleep they could carve out.
The odd feeling of an empty bed space was going to be a challenge for both of them, as evidenced by the tangled way they woke up. Limbs locked around each other, fingers grappled into the crooks of elbows or curve of shoulders and tied in a bow of ruffled bedsheets.
Their morning routine felt hollow, and Kid could hear the sound of his heart thumping in his ears with each step they took. Breakfast was pleasant but painfully stretched, and everyone was anticipating how the goodbye would go. And to everyone’s best efforts, they treated it like it was a normal day on board the Victoria Punk, for better or worse.
Kid admittedly dragged out their breakfast, and then their morning rounds, and then gently persuaded Rowena to stay through lunch so she could at least eat before she left. Grasping at any loose end to prolong the inevitable.
And as painful and unavoidable the final moments were, Kid didn’t shed a tear. Those his wife got in private when he finally shed his last bit of personal pride and held her close while he cried into her neck expressing how much he was going to miss her.
While she hugged and exchanged goodbyes to the pirates, Kid stood stoically by her side as they went down the line. Half wishing that for every hug they got, it was only fair if he got it back two-fold before she made her rune.
In fact, he insisted and made Heat inscribe the rune since the firestarter was getting deeper into his studies with the books the Witch left for him. All while Kid clutched Rowena to his chest as the final moments were upon them.
The final, final moment.
It was time to let go.
He couldn’t do it.
Rowena didn’t want to do it either, but she had to be strong for the both of them.
Clutching his shirt with a fist and letting out a sniffle, “You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me, Eustass Kid. Don’t lose any more limbs before we reunite, I’m very fond of all the parts you have left.”
“Yeah yeah. Don’t sacrifice your broom again, I’m not making you a third replacement.”
“Yes you will.”
“Yeah, I will. But I’ll complain about it the whole time.”
Rowena delicately cupped his face and gave him a tearful kiss, “I love you, Red.”
“I love you too, Witch. Go, before I regret letting you go,” he deepened their kiss one last, hoping time would freeze and they would stay in that moment.
“See you soon, mi amorsito,” she whispered, finally pulling back as he set her down in front of the rune. Her broom laid next to the circle, her zipper waist bag wrapped around the handle securely.
Not breaking eye contact, she picked up her belongings, gave the Kid Pirates a final wave goodbye, and then disappeared behind the veil of transmutation magic.
It was quiet as a wake on the deck as the pirates quietly withdrew into the background to give their Captain his space. He stood there for another few minutes before letting out a somber sigh. When Kid felt he could finally move, he walked to the helms room with determination. Knowing full well what they had to do next.
“Oi, Kill.”
The blonde looked up from the maps he was scribbling on, “What’s up?”
“Make the call.”
Killer stared at Kid before nodding his head, “What made you change your mind?”
Kid took a seat at the head of the navigation table, “Been thinking you’re probably right, we should consider allying with those guys. Straw Hat’s crew is diverse enough to have all that he needs at his command. We need to outsource in order to advance our agenda. Get to Red Hair before that idiot tries to claim my glory.”
“All right Kid. Promise you’ll behave?”
“Shut up and call them.”
𓏧 𓏲 𓏲 𓏲 𓋒 𓏲 𓏲 𓏲 𓏲 𓏧
Rowena wasn’t really expecting anyone to be at Shakky’s bar when she appeared, so she nearly stumbled and fell backwards into the wall when she saw Usopp, Nami, and Rayleigh at the bar being served drinks by the owner herself.
“AAAUGGGHHH!!”
“AHHHH ROWENAAAAA!!”
“Oooh I was wondering what the rune would do.”
“That’s a hella of a trick, mind teaching me kid? Could help me out of some misunderstandings that happen to every day fellas like myself.”
“Hi everyone!” Rowena dropped her broom and squealed as she rushed into Nami’s embrace. The women admired each other’s hair before the Witch jumped Usopp in a hug.
Turning to greet Rayleigh, Rowena was pulled into a hug by Shakky who had walked around the bar to intercept her.
“We missed you! Didn’t we Ray?”
Rayleigh rapidly stood up and clasped his hand on Rowena’s head, “Sure did. Wasn’t sure who was going to survive who, glad you came out the winner,” he winked at her.
“In more ways than one hmmmm,” Nami winked at the Witch before unceremoniously inspecting and valuing all the jewelry Rowena was wearing. “Good to see he gives you the good stuff. I would have thunder-tempo’d his ass if he went cheap on you!”
Rowena burst into a fit of laughter, of course Nami already knew. By the looks of it only Usopp didn’t understand who Nami was referring to.
The scream he let out could be heard from the outside if anyone had walked by at the moment.
“YOU MARRIED EUSTASS KID?! OF YOUR OWN FREE WILL?!!?!”
After calming the sniper down and assuring him that she had not been under dubious circumstances, nor was there a catch to her marriage beside her unwavering loyalty and the traditional ‘til death’ clause, he seemed to accept the situation with surprising ease.
“Honestly, that was very strategic of you Rowena. Being married to one of the most formidable pirates with that kind of reputation – if I didn’t know you before I would be scared shitless being near you!”
“You were scared shitless of me the first time you met me.”
As the girls teased Usopp, they were interrupted when they became aware that there was a marine presence looming on the archipelago due to a group of imposters pretending to be the Straw Hats terrorizing the citizens.
Nami assured them that the fake crew was not a concern and would make a good decoy for them as they reunited, and that it was probably best if they started heading to the ship.
“I’ll catch up in a minute, I was hoping to have a word with you Rayleigh,” Rowena parted with the Straw Hats to finally address her biological father.
He patted the bar stool next to him and Rowena perched up the seat next to him. While she anxiously fiddled with her glass as the elderly man gave her a summary on Luffy’s training, along with another apology of not taking the Witch under his protection as well, Shakky was the one who quietly observed the jewelry sitting on Rowena’s pinky before bringing attention to it.
“That’s a pretty ring, Rowena. It feels familiar, like something you once told me about Ray,” the bar owner gently lifted the Witch’s hand to show Rayleigh.
The look the woman gave her husband was knowing, and Rayleigh looked stunned to see the jewelry before looking at Rowena with a studious eye. Then his jaw gaped.
“I’ll be damned…” he exhaled slowly.
Rowena looked between the two uncertainly.
“Ray told me once upon a time before me, he met a mysterious and magical woman who he had a short affair with. He said that was his first love, and tried to convince her to join Roger’s crew so she didn’t have to do whatever she was involved with that required her to go back to her island where she would be cut off from the rest of the world.”
“Yeah, I even asked her to marry me, thinking that would prove my sincerity. She couldn’t do it, no matter how every fiber in her being told her to stay, she was duty bound to return home. I didn’t want to hear no, so I told her she didn’t have to answer, just take the ring. If she took it, I could live peacefully with the acknowledgement that she loved me back and would always remember me.
“This the ring I gave that women two decades ago. I never even let myself think that she could have gotten pregnant. I should have recognized it right away when I saw your eyes. Hecate had beautiful purple eyes, damn the more I look at you the more I see her,” his voice quavered.
His glasses skewed off his face as he dabbed the corner of his eye, “I-is she—?”
“She passed,” Rowena answered quietly. “I was able to contact her posthumously and she confirmed your paternity. Sorry you had to find out this way.”
“No-no—” Rayleigh swatted his hands, “I mean I’m sad to hear she’s gone but I’m overwhelmed to learn I have a daughter! C’mere kid.” He swiveled in his seat and wrapped Rowena in a hug.
Rowena’s breath caught as he embraced her, and a foreign feeling of safety and love flooded through her. A childhood longing she always had – to know her father – and now here she was in his arms. She hugged him back tighter, and the two became three as Shakky blended into their familial hug.
“Holy shit, I let my daughter run off with a punk idiot of a pirate!!”
“Your daughter married that punk pirate, dear,” Shakky giggled.
Shakky closed the bar down early and walked with her husband and step-daughter to the docks to set the Straw Hats off. While they had caught up on getting to know each other better, they had been keenly aware of the increasing alarm along the archipelago as several units of Marines were being deployed in multiple directions in response to skirmishes. With Rayleigh’s haki and Rowena’s magic in tandem, they were able to ward off anyone from approaching too closely as they continued their walk to the ship.
The Witch’s heart bloomed when she saw Robin and Franky on the deck and she sprinted to embrace them. Their excited chatter was interrupted by Rayleigh updating the Straw Hats about the incoming trouble, closely followed by Brook falling from the sky as he was dropped off by the Rosy Riders, at Shakky’s request.
Brook’s beating for his perverted panty request was suspended when they caught sight of Chopper with Sanji, Zoro and Luffy at his side, on the back of a giant bird speeding towards the Sunny.
“HEEEEYYYYY!!! EEEVVERRRYYBBOOOODDDYYY!!!” The unmistakable, joyous voice of Monkey D. Luffy echoed in the sky.
“I brought them!!” Chopper waved ecstatically.
“LUFFY! ZORO! SANJI! CHOPPER!!”
“HEEEEEYYYY!!!!”
“HEY YOU GUUUYYYSSSSSS!!!!” Rowena jumped up and down with Nami.
Robin smiled brightly as Brook sobbed and screamed, “Luffy! I missed you so much!!”
“You guys look stronger!!” Franky called out.
Marines were swarming the port from different directions, as well as coming up by sea as word of the Straw Hat’s had reached Navy HQ.
As the last four crewmates jumped on to the ship, the marines on land were held at bay by giant beetles and the sudden appearance of Perona and her ghost hollows, aiding in the Straw Hats escape. As the battleships began firing their cannons, Rowena went to deal with them but was surprised to see Boa Hancock’s ship moving in and blocked the Marines, raining down offensive attacks on their ships.
Realizing that their mutual allies had come together to help her friends reunite and avoid complications, Rowena turned back to fully embrace their reunion as the Straw Hats cried out in joyous relief at Luffy’s return. Usopp tended to Sanji’s sudden hemorrhaging, while Luffy delighted in childish wonderment over Franky’s upgrades.
Nami took charge of their distractions as Chopper’s bird companion attacked the new wave of Marine ships coming behind them. Sanji snapped out of his daze and blocked the new onslaught of cannon fire, Nami called out instructions to put the boat in motion, Zoro and Brook prepped the sails while Rowena raised the anchors. Shouting, explosions, laughter, and scared screaming harmonized around them and Rowena joined in the laughing.
Chaos.
It was so good to be home.
“Are the sails set?”
“They’re ready to go,” Zoro called down.
“Is it time Nami,” Luffy walked up to the redhead.
“Yep, just waiting on your command captain.”
Luffy turned to his friends, his signature smile plastered to his face. It might have been two years, but Rowena was thankful that the events of Marineford didn’t change him.
“Alright. You guys! I’ve got a lot of things that I want to share with you, but for now, thank you for going along with my selfish decision for these two years!”
“Not like it’s the first time,” Sanji bit down on his cigarette to suppress his own smile.
“He’s right! You’ve always been selfish!” Usopp grinned.
Rowena could see, they were all just as relieved to see Luffy’s spirit as jubilant as it was the day they each met him. Spreading joy, warmth and happiness in their found family.
The coating on the ship began rapidly expanding into a giant bubble that would soon sink the ship and allow it passage under the sea.
“Lower the sails!”
“Yes and roger!” The crew cried back, moving to their positions to begin their descent.
“SET SAIL!”
“AYE CAPTAIN!”
“LET’S GO TO FISH MAN ISLAND!!!!!!!!!!”
The Straw Hat Pirates laughed and cheered as the darkness of the deep sea swallowed them. Their journey to the New World and their search for the One Piece could finally begin.

[Extreme self-indulgent cartoon/anime infodump below]
(Confession: I watch the Japanese dub for DT17 as well (among other cartoons).
And one dumb thing I like to do with (especially) Japanese voice-acting is looking up what other characters the VA voices.
And on Monday, I did that with DT17's cast...compared with JoJo's cast.
→ Gladstone Gander = Tonio Trussardi (Tokuyoshi Kawashima 川島得愛) is cool
→ (Melon) Mickey = Donatello Versus (Takanori Hoshino 星野貴紀) is still cool
→ But Lena = Gwess (Momoko Taneichi 種市桃子) is really something
"Webby, Webby, Webby, Webbyyyyy~ ♪"
-------------------------------------
(Additional infodump that is actually longer and more serious:
As you can see from the list above (yes, that's it, afaik), the DT17 dub cast don't really star much in JoJo. Actually, they don't really star much (majorly) in other anime as well. The only other VA with a famous role is Della's, who voices Nami from One Piece (yes).
I think the most famous VA in DT17 are those for The Three Caballeros: Donald, José and Panchito, who literally also voice three characters from Dragon Ball (Beerus, Frieza, Piccolo, respectively). And two of them are guest stars.
There are many reasons why this is the case: First of all, I'm only looking at voice-acting. Some of the dub VA are actually not VA by profession, but instead, say, live actors/stage actors/narrators etc. IIRC, the previous official Japanese voice of Mickey Mouse, who had voiced Mickey for almost 3 decades, isn't even an entertainer by profession.
Second, some of the VA are quite young, both in terms of age and career. That doesn't necessarily equate to fame, but there is a certain relation.
So. Why am I saying all of that? Because despite all those things, the dub is fire. It is above average at worst, absolutely amazing at best. Call me a weeb, but I have never seen a Japanese dub that is worse than the original voiceover.
HDL sound just as distinct, Webby sounds just as hyper, Fenton sounds just as adorable, Gyro sounds just as crazy misunderstood, LP sounds just as the himbo he is, Scrooge sounds just as...old (there is legit an "old people's way of talking" in spoken Japanese). And of course, Yamadera-sensei perfectly replicates the Donald Duck speech...but in Japanese. (Donald speaking "normally" is literally just Yamadera speaking normally as himself)
The same goes for other animation dubs as well, such as LotTC (the two Sheldgoose are so damn funny), GEAH (Sam is the MVP there with his amazing voice change), or RotTMNT (I legit watched the Japanese dub first). The VA themselves may not be famous, but they still do an excellent job that could be worthy of the fame.
Mad respect to that dedication and talent.
Oh, and if that isn't enough: They dub the goddamn songs as well. They sing them themselves, in Japanese, with Japanese lyrics that fit, sound good, and are accurate.
Remember the "Waddleduck" theme? Yeah, they dubbed that. The "It's a Date!" song? They dubbed that too. Donald's "Hear My Voice"? Yamadera sang it himself, both in normal voice and Donald Duck voice.
And all those silly, out-of-the-blue songs from LotTC? They dubbed them. All of them. Sheldgoose's song to the moai and lava geckos is my favourite.
youtube
[Attached with the Japanese version of that song. The only part they didn't dub over was the Spanish part, but otherwise I think it is very neat.]

I haven't even seen any of the newer metal slug games, I've only seen the old ones and the goofy shit is like. Part of the appeal of the game. Like these are games that are part military game part the most ridiculous scenarios you've ever seen. The clean designs don't work with that. One of the best pieces of concept art is a guy getting his face bashed in with a big bullet, really goofy shit.
Make Marco a moon man again. Make Fio high as shit. Make Tarma a moai man.
Hell even the wonky classic SNK art looks better than this clean anime stuff.
As a matter of principle I'm refusing to play any new Metal Slug game until they make the girls weird-looking again.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
GOLEM[ゴーレム] nice and straight forward, the Hebrew GOLEM[גּוֹלֶם] made famous thru the Golem of Prague.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
GRAND-BUNKER[グランドバンカー] named after a military bunker as a play on the Dino/Zuum skin giving it a pattern similar to military camo
BLUE-MOUNTAIN[ブルーマウンテン]
HEAVY-DIANA[ヘビーダイアナ]
POSEIDON[ポセイドン] after the Greek god of the sea
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MAGNA-BEETLE[マグナビートル] from the latin MAGNA, MAGNUS meaning "Great" it is not the correct declension to match a nominative subject though.
STRONG-HORN[ストロングホーン]
TITAN[タイタン] from the Greek Titanes[Τιτᾶνες], the collection group/race(?) of Gods preceding the Greek pantheon. It's weird that this was the choice of name when it doesn't seem related at all? For one, the earliest versions don't even effectively borrow Suezo's obvious mono-eyed motif, but even once they do you'd think the obvious Greek mythos it would evoke would the Cyclops.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MOAIGON[モアイゴン] from MOAI[モアイ] like the Easter Island heads? But I'm not clear on what the -GON bit on the end is...
AMENHOTEP[アメンホテプ] like any of the 4 pharaohs or other historical Egyptian figures that held the name. (although the pharaoh Amenhotep IV was better known as Akenhaten.)
KÄMPFER[ケンプファー] german word meaning "fighter"
MARBLE-GAI[マーブルガイ] MARBLE like the stone, and I assume GAI[骸]: "shell"? or from GAIKOTSU[骸骨]: "skeleton". Although I guess it could just be GUY, like, just "a guy"..."?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
ECOLO-GUARDIAN[エコロガーデアン] ECOLOLOGY/ECOLOGICAL GUARDIAN
BRIEF-MAN[ブリーフマン] as in BRIEFS because he's a guy in his underwear. which I guess comes in a red and white variant?
TECMO-YAMA[モクモヤマ]from TECMO and YAMA[山]: "mountain"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
TYRANT[タイラント]
GOBI[ゴビ] as in the GOBI[ᠭᠣᠪᠢ] desert on the Mongolian-Chinese border
MARIO-MAX[マリオマックス] The component pieces seem clear enough but I have no idea what this is referencing...
BATTLE-ROCKS[バトルロックス] self explanatory, I do sort of miss the original design being so overtly stone, where as the later one has a little more variety of color and texture
Tumblr media Tumblr media
DAGON[ダゴン] in reference to the DAGON of Lovecraftian lore, appropriated from Syrian mythology. Bad western archeology of the early 1900s conflated this character with an unrelated Mesopotamian fish man, and in turn influenced HP Lovecraft's use of the name for a father god to the Deep Ones.
SLEEPY[スリーピー] Nothing to the name really, but I wish there was a better angle to show off the absurd stone dog face and floppy ears they gave this design. The fur texture is a real mess.
PRESSURE[プレッシャー] again weird use of hair texture on a Golem base. I don't even get what this thing is supposed to be... Zilla is already a big whale with arms and legs, this is a slightly smaller whale with arms and legs of slightly different proportons and also i guess it's made of stone???
DAO[ダオ] so funny enough seems to be taken from Dungeons&Dragons' classification of elemental Genies --alongside the air Djinn[جِنّ], fire Efreet[عفريت], and water Marid[مارد]-- of which Dao, the Earth genie, is the only one not based on any actual arabic source.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ASTRO[アストロ] Again straight forward name, but I love how you can see a little Metalner face in his helmet
ANGOLMOIS[アンゴルモア] Referring to the unidentified figure also erroneously referred to as a "Great King of Terror" in paraphrasings of one of Nostradamus's most famous prophecies --the one that seemingly predicted the end of the world in July of 1999.
WOODY[ウッディー] Also appeared in the MMOs
NEW-BOTTLE[ニューボトル] very funny to me that this of all things made it into the LINE Monster Farm mobile game.
Tumblr media
EREBUS[エレバス]Like Mt.Erebus the volcano on the Antarctican continent
KAI-OU[カイオー] from KAI[海]: "sea/ocean" and OU[王]: "King" which is part of KAIOU-SEI[海王星] lit. "Sea King Star" but is the Japanese name for the planet Neptune.
LAPIS-LATER[ラピスラテル] ??? LAPIS is latin for "Stone" but the last bit I can't make heads or tails of. It's nearest to RATEL[ラーテル] better known as the honey badger, but of course that doesn't make any damn sense in this context. It's close to LATERNE[ラテルネ] the German word for a latnern, and I think in Japanese as a loan word it's more specifically for German mountaineering lanterns. But I don't get why they'd drop the last syllable if that was the intent. And besides why mix languages? Although I guess it's not like MR hasn't don't that before... So, yeah, i dunno... Oh wait is it just supposed to be LAPIS-SLATER, like SLATE?
LEMURARIA[レムラーリア] I'm confused because it seem like a really clear point at LEMURIA[レムリア] the mythic sunken continent, a popular subject of idiot 19th century occultists, but also works of fantasy. It was also theorized as an origin of human life with some ancient lost culture of its own, not unlike Atlantis and Mu. But then there's that RAA/RER/LAA/LER[ラー] syllable sitting there in the middle of things, and I don't know wtf that's doing there...
Tumblr media
OLMECA[オルメカ] the ancient MesoAmerican civilization.(referred to in Japanese as Olmeca, although in English we'd call them "The Olmecs") Among other things they're known for the giant stone head sculptures that long mystified European settlers with the impressive scale of their construction.
NETHER[ネーデル] as in the NETHERLANDS
BAUM[バウム]from the German word for "tree"
OU[オー] from OU[王]: "King"? I'm not really sure about that, but for a prowrestler he doesnt appear to have much of a gimmick.
Tumblr media
HEAVY-PEACH[ヘビーピーチ]
WICKER-MAN[ウィッカーマン] from the famous 1973 film of the same name and it's titular giant humanoid effigy.
BRICK-GOLEM[ブリックゴーレム]
GEO[ジオ]
HIPPO-GIGAS[ヒポギガス] from HIPPOPOTAMUS and GIGA
TYPHON[テュポーン] from the Greek TYPHON[Τυφῶν] the monstrous giant serpent that sired the monster children of Echidna.
SEA-PALACE[シーパレス] for some reason there aren't any screenshots of this one in particular that i can find online. I loosely took a guess at what the lesione color palette on the GBA golem would've looked like.
OGRE[オーガ]
NAZCA-STONE[ナスカストーン] referencing the NAZCA desert and more specifically the Nazca lines; giant geoglyphs carved into the landscapes of Peru.
CRYSTALLIA[クリスタリア]
Tumblr media
THOR'S-HAMMER[トゥールハンマー] strange that they didn't just name this one Mjolnir...
VULCANUS[ボルカヌス]
TALOS[タロス] from the Greek TALOS[Τάλως] a man made of bronze who protects the island Crete from invaders from the sea. Even though his mythological origins give him divine lineage, he's sometimes depicted or evoked in fiction as either a magically animated statue or a kind of mechanical automaton.
DOROTABOU[ドロタボウ] from the Yokai DOROTABOU[泥田坊] lit. "Mud(dy) Field Monk*" *Monk here not literal, but in reference to a bald head. They rise from the neglected fields after their death to haunt the new owners who mistreat the property.
GOBI[ゴビ] Gobi's not new, but the MR2 one is the basis of the special variation Golem sprites.
PRIEST[プリースト]
GOGMAGOG[ゴグマゴグ] a mythic giant from Cornwall in British myth.
GOBI-MARINE[ゴビマリーネ]
Tumblr media
MOCHII-NUDE[モチーニュードー]
PRISON-GUARD[プリズンガード(ゴーレム+ザン)
DAI-CORO-BOCCHI[ダイコロボッチ] a play on the DAI-DARA-BOCCHI[大座法師] a mythic giant in Japanese folk lore said to be as big as a mountain and responsible for shaping much of Japan's iconic landscapes
ARAWASHI-OU[アラワシオウ] from ARAWASHI[荒鷲]: "wild eagle" and OU[王]: "King"
Tumblr media
GIGA-VIO[ギガバイオ] BIO like BIOHAZARD? I feel like that's not right. Could be shortened from VIOLENCE[バイオレンス] which feels like it fits the general tone of Gitan's contribution of devilishness and "evil" to things.
GADGETER-G[ガジェッターG] the name itself feels more in line with classic 70s super robots like Mazinger Z, but the design actually feels more reminiscent of 90s super robots like Gao Gai Gar and the Braves franchise.
BUTCHER-KING[ブッチャーキング]
GURUZAADO-V[グルザードV] I have no idea how to parse this... With the V tacked on the end, it's almost certainly a play on old super robots. Maybe the first bit is from GURUGURU[ぐるぐる] the sound of spinning or going around in circles like a drill?
Tumblr media
and finally a few random additions to the franchise...
MORIBITO-GOLEM[モリビトゴーレム] from MORIBITO[守り人]: "guard/watchman." This one was a cameo of the anime Golem in the second iteration of the MMO. It's a reference to how Golem is introduced int he anime guarding a graveyard of saucerstones and the garden they're in.
SAND-GOLEM[サンドゴーレム] just a random /??? type the LINE monster farm app added for some reason...
FROG-ROCK[フロッグロック] a mix breed with the new Kawazumo monster. In Japanese the ROG-ROK bit has a kind of synergy or rhyming quality to it. I am upset by how fleshy this "golem" is

Iconic Statues at the Louvre in Paris
Tumblr media
The Louvre in Paris features a vast collection of renowned sculptures, ranging from antiquity through to the late 19th century. One of the distinguished pieces in the Arts of Africa, Asia, Oceania, and the Americas gallery is a Moai statue of Easter Island (Rapa Rui). This enigmatic basaltic face was quarried from the Rano Raraku volcano and was originally part of a sculpture that was likely 16 feet tall. Crafted around 1000 BC, it’s among more than 900 such monoliths situated on Easter Island, the southeastern-most point of the Polynesian triangle. Moai are thought to represent great ancestors of the seagoing culture, and were often placed on ahu, or ceremonial platforms related to burials.
Another ancient masterpiece is the Nike of Samothrace. Positioned at the top of a marble staircase, the so-called Winged Victory was carved from Parian marble around 190 BC and stands on a ship prow made of Lartos marble. An iconic example of Hellenistic Greek art, it was discovered in pieces in 1863 by Charles Champoiseau, then vice-consul in the Ottoman city Adrianople. After excavating the statue on the island of Samothrace, the amateur archaeologist had it transported to France, where it has occupied a place of honor at the Louvre since 1866.
The headless statue of Nike is nine feet tall, while the ship that serves as a pedestal is of slightly greater height. Together, they serve as a marker of naval victory (the word “nike” means “victory” in ancient Greek). The female form under wind-blown garments has a dramatic aspect, with wings outstretched, as if about to fly. While Winged Victory is made of plain white marble in its current form, it would have been painted bright when crafted. Interestingly, while the arms, feet, and head are still missing and unrestored, a surviving right hand was ultimately found at the Samothrace site in 1950. This is also on display at the Louvre, and has an outstretched gesture of greeting.
Another iconic Hellenistic marble statue at the Louvre, the Venus De Milo was crafted around 150 BC. Local farmer Yorgos Kentrotas discovered the statue in two pieces on the island of Melos in the Aegean Sea in 1820. French naval officer Olivier Voutier happened to be digging at an ancient theater in the vicinity and assisted with the excavation.
A separate inscription reveals the statue to be the creation of “Alexandros, son of Menides, citizen of Antioch.” While some identify her as Aphrodite, goddess of love and fertility (Venus to the Romans), other researchers believe the statue represents Amphitrite, Greek goddess of the sea. Soon after the statue’s discovery, Voutier presented the Venus De Milo, lacking arms but with head intact, to Louis XVIII. It has been a foundational piece of the Louvre collection since 1821.
The Louvre also contains two iconic works by Renaissance sculptor Michelangelo: The Rebellious Slave and The Dying Slave. Both were carved between 1513 and 1515 and intended for Pope Julius II’s tomb. This was the same Vatican leader who commissioned Michelangelo’s large-scale painted work on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Plans for the Pope’s tomb underwent several changes, and Michelangelo was ultimately allowed to keep the unfinished marble works for his residence. Featuring contorted and sensual male figures, the statues have an immediateness that reflects their unfinished state. They still bear the marks of tools such as chisels, rasps, and hammers that would ultimately have been worked over and polished.
Michelangelo gave the statues to Luigi del Riccio in 1545, in gratitude for arranging his care at the Strozzi palace in Rome when he fell ill. In 1850, they were transported to France, where Cardinal de Richelieu had them installed at his chateau in Poitou. Interestingly, the four other slaves in the series remain in Italy, on display at Florence’s Galleria dell’Accademia.
