Hi! I know it's a bit weird of me to put another thing in your periphery so soon after my last check-in. But I'm currently caught up in Princess Peach: Showtime! brainrot and I thought you'd like to hear it!

So in one of your earlier posts you came up with the idea of Yuu having a modern Alice in Wonderland-esque overblot with Grim as their phantom. But, having spent the better part of a week trying to hundred percent this game (why am I like this?) gave me another worm. And it goes something like this:

What if Grim isn't the only one gaining something from those blot crystals?

Because in the game, Peach changes "form" so to speak, after taking in a bunch of Sparkle. So who's to say Yuu isn't unknowingly absorbing runoff blot from those crystals? Then who's to say that Yuu doesn't have similar "forms" to the Overblot boys? Snapshots immortalized in ink and imbeded in a human who is slowly but surely losing it. And, going along with your idea of a Yuu overblot, what would it be like for the boys to have to effectively face themselves should that happen? Now it's not just Grim they have to face but a reflection of them at their lowest and the one victim who has been dragged to it every single time. The pain, the fear, the regret! Ah! I didn't know I could think of something so angsty! (And that's not even talking about Peach's last form and the Yuu equivalent!)

Anyway, make of that what you will. I just wanted to get that out there. Hope you're doing well and staying healthy! Looking forward to the next thing you make!

I really do love the way you format your asks dear friend, it is rather like receiving a letter. It is splendid to hear from you again so soon.

I had a brain rot myself a bit a while ago thinking about how it would be interesting for Yuu and Grim to channel the overblot forms similar to Eden's Promise: Eternity in FFXIV:

In my mind I was thinking how I would design a boss fight where Grim has three forms and Yuu has three forms, and then they merge to channel the Thorn Fairy since she's too powerful for just the one of them... but meh that's neither here nor there. The idea of Yuu with forms that reflect the various phantoms and physical attacks that reflect the overblot boys is so delicious, but realistically I think the concept you are describing where the boys are being forced to face themselves is the point of the various chapters we are going through in Book 7 right now. Grim and Yuu twisted into an overblotted abomination... you could argue that facing them would be the equivalent of what is happening with the ob boys right now in his book. It would be easy for him to blame the other dorm leaders and act like if they didn't overblot then he wouldn't be forced to hurt his first friend... but then that would be a disservice to you. He very much had his part to play, the largest one perhaps. In you now is a twisted reflection of everything he hated about himself: his power and his inability to save those he loved with it. You don't need any form other than your own to taunt him with that.

I do think you are onto something about the crystals not just affecting Grim. If we think about the relationship between Grim and Yuu, I think it makes the most sense to say that what Yuu gains from the blot crystals is their premonitions of overblot? Memories sealed in crystal are a fairly common trope... so if the memories of the respective phantom is trapped inside of that crystal then Yuu's visions could be the crystals calling out to them. I am less solid on the "why" but when I think about it this way, something about Grim and Yuu's connection allows Yuu to "hear" the crystals forming, which is why we don't get visions of every bad thing that happens (Rollo and Fellow for example) because there is no "Flower of Evil" about to bloom. Perhaps the Great 7's crystals "belong" to Grim/the Chimera in some way so that's why they are calling to Yuu? I need to think a bit more, but oh I am so glad you sent this ask. It gave me so much to think about...

so i used to play swtor, the star wars mmo, but in.....late 2022 i think it was? they dropped their 7.0 update and it changed the way gearing and shit worked. i hated it, as a hardcore raider, i quit the game for like 6 months, i came back and discovered that the story was just not great and i really could not handle the new gearing changes. so i quit for good. and then spent another 6 mo or so missing mmos and raiding and stuff, but i hadn't clicked at all with ESO when i tried it once, and i didn't have the computer space to try destiny...

anyway this january @sunderedazem kept poking me about ffxiv and telling me about some of the worldbuilding and shit. finally i went ok, fine, i'll try the free trial and see, but NO PROMISES. and then they dragged me through ARR and i got intensely hooked. and the rest is history.

Hythlodaeus - Final Fantasy XIV I wuv purple wife guy... All the way from when he was just a weenwoon ghost. Honestly, FFXIV has sooo many good characters that picking just one feels kinda weird haha.

DIY - Welcome to My Home Help, the bastard chuuni wizard in a big hat has me by the throat. Everyone else seems ready to strangle him (both npcs and other players). And then there's me who's spamming the heart emote at him every chance I can lol.

Waka - Okami Another bastard of a man. Like FFXIV, Okami has tons of cool characters! But teen me latched into Waka so hard on my first playthrough. And listen. He's a pretty man with long hair, nice voice AND has a flute that he both plays and uses as a laser sword in battle. Yeah. Oh and he shows up to tell you mysterious (and funny) prophecies.

Wei Wuxian - Mo Dao Zu Shi (Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation) I'll be honest, he came to mind while writing Waka's thing (club long haired flute playing guys lol). But yeah, he fits in the "morally grey, overly dramatic and little asshole-ish pretty boy with long hair" category I happen to like very much.

Ukitake Jushiro - Bleach Long white hair! Twin swords! Gentle and silly old man who can kick your ass! Bleach was one of my first animes ever, and I still like the setting itself (and many of the characters).

Courier - Arknights First one that had me going "oh I like him, he's never leaving my team". Also first one I E2'd, and he's still my go-to vanguard for almost every stage. Who can say no to that adorable little smile and voicelines offering to make you food~

Blade - nu:carnival Cute white haired assassin android boy! I started this game thinking I'd fixate on Edmont based on the website character infos, but nope, Blade being cute airhead with love for cute things (and Darling) got me first.

Sleeping Beauty (Briar Rose/Ibarahime) - SINoALICE Game may be gone but having played it for it's entire global run I felt I needed to include it haha. And! Who better than the character that got me into it~ Sleepy's basically what it says in the jar - she prefers to sleep 24/7 and will react violently if you try to force her awake.

Devola & Popola - Nier Automata Cheating and putting them both (lol). I love 9S too, but kinda felt like they deserved to get mentioned so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Idk what it is about them, but I spent a very long time just standing next to them when they first showed up haha. I'm specifically mentioning the Automata ones, since I met them first, and am yet to finish my Replicant playthrough (ooops)

Mashita Satoru - Death Mark I had hard time picking the last one since I didn't wanna go "too far back" in things I like/used to like, so I went with Death Mark since the second one came out not too long ago. The other characters are cool too, but Mashita is fan favorite for a reason. Guess we all love snarky detective who looks like he could really use some sleep.

Hoooo boy it was harder than I thought haha. I mainly only interact with FFXIV fandom, but at least I kinda.... glance towards these other 9 mentioned sometimes? Also purposefully skipping Ensemble Stars even tho I'm currently active player - I could not choose between Mika and Rei, and honestly straight up ignore 99,99% of the fandom.

Ooh, I am not sure I have considered Driver Luna before, but I am now absolutely going to try to. Azami was my instant first thought for who she would resonate with, but that's more of an aesthetic thing. However, I also think Luna would work well with many healer Blades, though I can see her wielding Bitballs moreso than I can Knuckle Claws. (Which is perhaps ironic considering that there are no dark-element healer Rare Blades in XC2!) Did you have anyone else in mind from your sudden imagining (either in terms of who Luna would resonate with or perhaps how any other Reborn characters would be put in the game)?

Regarding Xenoblade Chronicles AUs with other F/Os, I have considered something like this in the past, but only for my selfship with Aqua, as far as I can remember. In that, the idea was less of an outright AU and more simply that Aqua and Aria had come to Alrest (hey, that's you) at some point after KH3, probably as part of their search for new potential Keyblade wielders in different worlds (partially because, while there's definitely scope for Heartless invasion, I'm struggling to think of how that would actually play out from like a game perspective). As part of their investigations, the two would pose as Blade and Driver, with Aqua pretending to be a Driver and Aria pretending to be her Blade, since - despite Gormotti being a thing here - Aria sort of has a few too many inhuman traits to properly pass as one, I think. Like the wings, and the seams, which may or may not be able to be mistaken for ether lines. She'd specifically be pretending to be a dark-element attacker Rare Blade of some kind, perhaps even being assumed to be Legendary considering the unique nature of her "Blade weapon" (which here would, I suppose, just be Aqua using whichever Keyblade she can summon that looks most like something Aria would have given her..?)

That is the only sort of AU-adjacent thing I can really think of having come up with beforehand, and even then it's more "XC in KH" than anything else. However, here are some other considerations, if you'd like them:

Calanthe and KOS-MOS getting thrown into XC1 instead of XC2 may not be overly feasible, but it's a concept and a half for a number of reasons. Like, imagine being Shulk and co. right after Citri and Fiora get captured at the start of the game - setting out to save them both and taking the fight to the Mechon, and then all of a sudden encountering someone who looks way too much like Citri and has a lot of her same interests (like tech!), alongside a potentially-mechanical? other woman who is incredibly powerful but whose abilities sometimes seem a bit too Mechon-like. Who are both apparently not from this world. And then starting to learn about Faced Mechon and their pilots. And then finding out that Citri and Fiora got turned into Face pilots. There's so much potential for an interesting up-and-down dynamic there, I feel!

My selfship with Zero feels like it could be pretty easily ported into XC2 with how Blades work there and how that can potentially be paralleled with voidsent pacts. You could either make Zero a Flesh Eater given her hybrid nature in FFXIV, or go down the route of her being a Blade that Zenos manages to steal and forcibly resonate with, then maybe Lorenza somehow restoring her memories to her after re-resonating with her? I feel like Lorenza could also fit well as a Blade, though, so hmm.. There are ideas there, but i'm not settled on either one yet.

I'm thinking about the recent Clio rambles.. I'm thinking about the whole "preserving her heart" aspect.. I'm thinking about how I literally described that as being able to take "the Sora route or the Jin route" (if you know then you know) and settled on something more like Sora's for KH.. I'm thinking about Aria taking the Jin route in XC2 and subsequently occupying a position like his in the story.. Yep, nope, that can fit, can't it

Both XC2 and DQIX have an Yggdrasil, and angel equivalents, and so on. I therefore really want to put Pavo and Ardea in here somehow. Maybe, Pavo and Aquila as the Aegis Blades (twin symbolism there would be fun), and then other Celestrians (so, including Ardea) as other Blades.. maybe Ardea becoming a Flesh Eater to represent her loss of wings and halo in DQIX? I feel like this could make Corvus Amalthus (he’s Aquila’s mentor, Amalthus is Malos’ Driver), but surely King Godwin would fit there better given how Indol is.. unless I say the Gittish Empire replace Torna..? Maybe Corvus would be better as the Malos equivalent (final boss and all), so maybe Pneuma could be Celestria - but then where do I put Pavo and Aquila, just ordinary other Blades like Ardea? Or would he be her Driver who then also pretends to be Ardea's despite her not needing one?? There is absolutely something here, I think, but I feel like I may be the only one with enough knowledge of both games to try and make it work. And I currently am not able to make it work, so.. take what you can make of my attempts, I suppose =P

As someone that likes to see your thoughts with DrakeNieR stuff, what are your thoughts about SINoALICE recently being confirmed canon to Drakenier due to The Library existing within The Cage in Reincarnation?

Ooh I haven’t actually played SINoALICE and I’m not caught up personally on reincarnation (but I don’t care about spoilers bc I have no context for them and I care more about the lore pieces anyway)

But I’m not surprised - the drakengard 3 crossover event that it had already made it canon in my mind lol. Yoko taro has certain MOs as a creator, and not that I think I’m on his level, but as someone who is also super into big expansive timelines and whatnot, I kinda figured it was connected. It seemed too deliberate to just be a fun crossover Easter egg. Too much effort went into it; same with the FFXIV YoRHa dlc

(On the other hand, the collabs with just skins like for that awful Nikke or whatever is just for money and building revenue, IMO. There’s no substantial lore there in my mind)

Since the whole Schtick is saving timelines and multiverses and alternate dimensions, this does not surprise me in the slightest. And in fact, completely excites me. 😂

I also think Voice of Cards is completely part of DrakeNieR canon too even tho he says it isn’t (Forsaken maiden I’m looking at you 👀👀👀 the maiden sacrifice and the Goddess system from Drakengard 1 are too similar to be a coincidence and I always interpreted it as a folktale that came about after the Intoners died)

ALSO, it 100% leads me to believe he is working on something HUGE for the next project.

Everyone is always bitching about “oh when is the next game coming out” but like 1) game dev takes time and 2) he’s probably already working on it otherwise why would he be dropping so much lore at such a rapid pace 👀

FFXIV 6.3 Thoughts and Feelings - Heavy Spoilers (kind of turned into a weird rant? sorry)

First off I feel generally pretty positive about 6.3, I liked it, Euphrosyne was nice, I'm not in a 'Everything is going downhill' mood at all, I'm thriving, Bunny Boys finally have short hair, I'm super excited for Eureka Orthos (bc of the music q.q my favorite ff theme is comingggg)

...but...

I'm hardly the first person to point out that the writing in 6.3 was... pretty meh.

And I had a bit of a thought about why it felt like that, because on the surface, I'm fine with what happened. I like Zero and her arc about making friends and her starting to care about others, I like the reveal that the twelve + 1 are Venat's group (When they pointed out that the thirteenth god might be the moonwatcher I legit gasped, I don't know why, I began to care about this guy at some point and didn't even notice)

But like. All of the writing was kind of flavorless, which made it a bit boring tbh.

Zero learns the magic of friendship through another mo-cap eating animation bc people liked the Graha Burger scene i guess (what is it with Endwalker and animating eating please use that cutscene budget for something else I don't want to see it anymore)

Rubicante and Cagnazzo exist I guess. I love their designs and fights, but the other two had a little bit more build up and it shows imo. (We fought Scarmiglione twice, Barbariccia had a quest of voidsent being absolutely terrified of her arrival, with these two we only have "I have a plan Cagnazzo, come with me")

All of the Twelve are friends :) No conflict, no chaos, just happy people being absolutely unnuanced nice and non-controversial :)

Instead of actually learning about the gods we get to meet a weird cultist as a nod to 1.x whose conflict felt like we already did that thrice (at least i hope that was a reference, bc if it wasn't then why???) and we got a crumb of Krile development. Which is good and I love her. (I hope the 6.5 raid reveals her new outfit, If she isn't our company for the last raid I will be upset.)

I guess there's a lack of superfluous-ness in this patch that's usually there. Like in Lapis Manalis, one of the group (I think Y'shtola) goes to the village to search for lore/information/whatever. Usually the game would let you do that. "While Vrtra is sad, let's check out this village." And then you get to go around and the writers spoon feed us the lore we crave so much. It's superfluous in a good way.

Like imagine we go to a new place, we need to find something out, Y'shtola is with you when talking with a local. That local tells you "And as everybody knows Light Aether is black!" Cut to Y'shtola doing /ponder. "Interesting. Thank you for your time." The conversation ends and Y'shtola pulls you to the side and explains to you what exactly you were supposed to get in that situation. Actually, Light Aether is white, so why do they think otherwise? Here are some hypotheses based on the lore we know that either are correct or will explicitly be ruled out later on.

Of course we could also come to all those conclusions ourselves - and in another questline game you would be expected to do that work for yourself. And in my opinion both of these approaches are perfectly fine - But since ffxiv generally does it one way it needs to be done on purpose if you suddenly do it differently. Especially if you suddenly stop doing it from one patch to the other in the main story.

But this time Y'shtola comes back and tells you: "No, I looked and there's nothing here worth mentioning." Get a barrel and carry some fuel. You don't get to learn more about Galatea the Puppetmaster or Drusilla's home or some weird new piece of Reaper lore. Go and reread the three notes in the Dungeon if you want that. We have stuff to do so go ahead and waste play time with this engaging filler quest.

The gods say "Yes, what people tell, feel and think about us affects us and our being." And then nothing happens. No examples given, even though several are kind of right there and it's a lot weirder that they don't adress them. Not even something basic like "Althyk and Nymeia are siblings, some people think they had children together, but that's actually not true." And of course nothing like "For example, Nophica and Halone were actually good friends, but the stories of the people literally created hatred between them and turned them into rivals, even though nothing actually happened between them."

I am bitter they erased their feud. Justice for Nophica.

Anyways, that's a lot of words to say "It was fine." To me it's at most a worrisome precedent, but I doubt this will continue? Again, the general outline is fine, it's just filling the gaps between it that didn't work out great. They probably just took it easy on this patch or something, who knows what happened behind the scenes. Maybe XVI needed help with something, maybe somebody quit, we'll never know.

And even if this continued, the music and the art design continues to amaze me and they'll have to do a lot of things wrong to make me consider dropping this game anytime soon lol

Maple the shield tank she is not. Started near Endwalker, only four jobs maxed out by 6.35. Pretty much leveling by headcannon affinity.

As a Hunting Moon Miqo’te, the archer side of the bard is a way of life for Hylnyan, while the bard side added a magical tone to her skills.

Botany and Fishing supplement the gatherer’s life slightly more than Mining does. The leather and meat from game would either get stored or be used for trade as material or gear. That was the way in her village/clan.

Her cooking skills is rather basic and too simple to be unlocked. Since her mate is the master culinarian that feeds her. Their combined skills was what made them wanted to go to Gridania to look for a new life in the first place.

She tends to let main tank Thancred steals and maintain aggro. And he happily makes it his business to get her where she needs to go to do damage. G’raha is preferred as a healer but is the backup 3rd tank

Being Monk was for close quarters combat and the chakras that opened up helped make red and white magic easier to grasp.

There was something about Monk that felt familiar, it might have been a past life, it might had been a life on a different shard. Might Omega knew something during Sigmascape?

Mudras are confusing at the moment even though rogue was thought as a different type of hunter.. Recently started to learn White Magic after an unpleasant healing incident in The Void. Either that or she really wanted to run a Light Party with the Pandemonium crew

The gamer am bard, it’s a strangely comfortable role until I can level monk up properly. Endwalker felt like one big Bard Expansion, or combined with Dancer .

Monk felt like my past life what with Sabin Prince of punch and fighting games roots. Would love to pull in my summoner self for memes about hoarding crystals and using Exarch and the Crystal Tower as a catalyst to summon Vritra, Data Musashi Loss or the Doctor.

But summoner is busy destroying shards to bring back her world and wrangling the spirits of dead heroes (aye Gudako be Elidibus during the Heroes Gauntlet (Basaka wa dare ni mo makenai. Sekai de ichiban tsuyoi dakara!) Five Shards(NA) and countless alternative budding timelines down. Two more to go, uncertainty of success in storyline it seems.

Playing FFXIV alongside FGO can get hilarious or freaky when you notice the parallels or themes they share.

I don’t tank in roulette as my ping makes me move slower even with sprint.

So I just got this game like a little over a week ago when a good friend gifted it to me for my birthday. My only interaction with it up to that point was knowing it existed and the song Liquid Nights & Disco Lights by Miracle of Sound which made me familiar with the neat art style but taught me nothing of the story as most MoS songs do - if you know the media he sings about it's subtle, and if you don't then it's usually at least a good bop.

But anyway I started playing and I had so many moments of just going ?????? because I could not fathom what the greater meaning of this game was. And the more I played, the more I realized that it's about a man with a history he's trying so hard to forget, and even though he has amnesia and everything seems hopeless he's choosing to survive. There's a line from the aforementioned song that says "I can't recall a thing, so why do I feel so sad?" and I feel like that one line more than anything sums up my experience with this game so far. You don't know anything, but you know sadness. That's evident from the very first moments of the game as you wake up and see the character stumbling around after obviously being so drunk he just full blown blacked out.

Also what a genius way to introduce people to the world. Because sure I've been playing FFXIV for almost 2 years now and I can go off about he different locations and the lore but when I started I didn't know a darn thing and video games are just Like That - you're a stranger to an established world, often just thrown right into the fray and you kind of have to figure it out along the way while knowing that your character has all this wealth of life experience to draw on while you as the player are just confused. But by starting the game with the main character waking up with amnesia and introducing the world building through the various aspects of himself speaking it feels as if he's being informed at the same time you the player are and it's really neat. I've never experienced that in a video game before it was a super fantastic touch!

i’ve been struggling to come up w/ what disco elysium is about for people who want to get into it cause. it’s a post soviet depression simulator. it’s a bisexual man who has amnesia so bad he forgot what being gay means. it’s about that man having amnesia so bad because he tried to kill himself by going on a three day bender. it’s the funniest game i’ve ever played. it’s the most deeply profound game i’ve ever played. a central character to the theming is a big bug. i think fundamentally, disco elysium is a game about living in a world without hope and choosing to survive but that’s kinda hard to say when part of “living without hope and choosing to survive” also encompasses taking psychic damage and dying after a kid calls you a fag

Some more ff16 thoughts and mild spoilers

I'm about 50% of the way through the game now according to the little percentage thingy that shows up on the ps5 home page for the game.

I still have a lot of the same issues I had going into it.

I'm enjoying it so much more than I did ff15 at the very least. There's a lot of game here and there's no painfully obvious places where they can fit dlc in that explains some important story content as they did with 15 along with the movie and anime. Even at my low skill level the combat is much more engaging in 16.

I still have no real complaint on the music. It all fits for where it plays in the game. I do gotta wonder why the music to play at the hideout is so bloody expensive to buy though. You do not get a lot of gil in this game. I've barely spent any of what I've earned and I've only got around 90k. I think most of the music I've seen for sale costs like 40k.

I'm keeping up with the plot to a point. My eyes still glaze over with boredom whenever it switches to a little presentation about what the various factions are up to since the last time we saw them sitting around a table/throne room/church talking about taking over some place.

Then they introduced a new character that shows you a HUGE new lore thing that lets you see relationships between characters and what each nation is up to at every single point in the game. I'm sure the people that care about fantasy politics are gonna love that but it's very much not for me xD

The big mystery that has been getting slowly uncovered seems interesting enough for me to keep playing though. Happy enough it's not the kind of story I feared it was going to be at the very least.

Still struggling to really care about any of the characters. There's one that seems like they have potential if they don't end up the same as their ffxiv counterpart after all these hints they're dropping lately along with the nature of one of the games features.

I'm handling the combat better than I expected at this point but there's been several fights today I just couldn't win without having to put on the slow mo dodge assist ring. Still salty about that meaning I have to take off another of my useful stat boosting accessories though xD
