WHAT HAPPENS IN THE VOLUME?

CONTINUING FROM PREVIOUS VOLUME

U.S.J. ARC (Chap 12-21): Shōto, along with Bakugō and Kirishima, reaches where All Might is and help him fight the Nomu and Kurogiri, Shōto partially freezing the Nomu with a control of his ice (he managed to freeze the Nomu but didn’t freeze All Might despite the latter being close) that positively impress All Might.

Shōto informs the Villains they can't kill the symbol of peace.

'Heiwa no shōchō wa teme~eragotoki ni yarenē yo’ 「平和の象徴はてめェら如きに殺れねえよ」 “You can't kill the symbol of peace like that.…!”

All Might however tells them to keep out of the fight. Shōto though, points out how things would have been troublesome without his help and All Might agrees...

`…… Sakki no wa ore ga SUPPORT hairanakerya yabakatta deshou 「……さっきのは俺がサポート入らなけりゃやばかったでしょう」 “…It would have been bad if I hadn’t been there to support you.”

...but then beats up the Nomu, impressing Shōto, who agrees they’re not at ready for the level All Might is fighting at and suggest they’ll go help others. As the other teachers reach the place Shigaraki and Kurogiri leaves. The police witness that Shōto is among the unharmed kids and Shōto discover Hagakure was in his same area so, when he used his ice, he could have frozen her.

U.A. SPORT FESTIVAL ARC (Chap 22-44): The day after classes are cancelled. The day after it, Aizawa is back at school and informs Shōto’s class they’ve to prepare for U.A sport festival. At lunch Shōto overhear Īda and Uraraka saying All Might called Midoriya and Īda pointing out how Midoriya has similar super strength to All Might while Uraraka suggests All Might could have taken a liking to him.

Two weeks after, just before the start of the sport festival, Shōto approaches Midoriya pointing out how he’s stronger and more capable than him. Then he claims All Might got his eyes on Midoriya so he’s going to beat him.

‘Todoroki-kun… Nani?’ 「轟くん…… 何？」 “Todoroki-kun… What is it?”

I didn’t transcribe the whole dialogue but Shōto’s way to talk contrast with Midoriya, who’s much more polite.

For start Midoriya refers to him as ‘Todoroki-kun’ where Shōto goes just for ‘Midoriya’.

Even if we don’t see it here, to say “I” Shōto uses ‘ore’ (おれ/俺), the tough, masculine, kind of rude way to say “I”, while Midoriya uses ‘boku’ (ぼく/僕), which is more humble, and to say “you” Shōto uses ‘omae’ (おまえ/お前) which either expresses the speaker's higher status, or a very casual relationship among peers where Midoriya goes for ‘kimi’ (きみ/君) which is the polite way to say you.

So Shōto is less polite than Midoriya and his words are clearly not nice, however he’s not super rude either. This will change later so I thought to point it out here.

Kaminari is impressed by how ‘the strongest of the class’ (aka Shōto) made a declaration of war to Midoriya and when Kirishima tells Shōto he shouldn’t pick a fight now, Shōto replies it’s okay since they aren’t pretending to be friends, here.

`Ō ! ? CLASS saikyō ga sensen fukoku!!?’ 「おお！？クラス最強が宣戦布���！！？」 “Oh!? The strongest in the class declares war!!?”

(1) 'KENKAkoshi' (ケンカ腰/喧嘩腰) means "attitude that is ready to start a fight" but it's formed by 'kenka' which means "fight" (and is written in katakana for emphasis) and 'goshi/koshi' which means "hips/loins/lower back" so I guess the idea is that one is posed for a fight.

Midoriya agrees Shōto is stronger but claims he won’t fall behind.

The first event at the sport festival at which Shōto takes place is the "Obstacle Course Race" (障害物競争 'Shōgai Butsu Kyōsō'). Shōto freezes the legs of the one next and ahead of him and becomes the "leader" (先頭 'Sentō'). He then faces the robots which were used during the entrance exam, freezing them so that they won’t be able to move and he’ll manage to get through… but he froze them in such an unstable position they’ll fall on whoever else will try to pass. Shōto still comments he wished U.A. had prepared something better as his "shitty old man" (クソ親父 'KUSO Oyaji'), aka Todoroki Enji, is watching.

Shōto, keeping the lead, then easily passes the second barrier, tailed by Bakugō, whom he notices is all fired up and wonders if Bakugō is a slow starter. Meanwhile the public is impressed by Shōto due to his Quirk and to how he’s athletic and perceptive. When they realize he’s the son of Hero Number Two, Endeavor (aka Enji) they find normal he’s so strong and assume the Pro will fight to have him as their sidekick.

Once Shōto reaches the minefield he understands it’s an obstacle made to put in disadvantage who’s leading. At the same time Bakugō reaches him, claiming he made his war declaration to the wrong guy, surpassing Shōto. The two fight for first place when Midoriya surpasses them. In order to get first place again, Shōto makes an ice path, aware it’ll help the others too, suspending his battle with Bakugō so that they both can chase after Midoriya who however manages to keep the lead and get first place in the race while Shōto is second.

All in all Shōto keeps on being fleshed out more and more, so that we get how an awesome aspiring Hero he is in terms of abilities and in terms of Quirk power but also of ability to judge situations… but we also view also how cold and competitive he can be, as well as how he is aware of his own abilities. Plus we are introduced to how he’s the son of Number Two, Endeavor, but also it’s hinted how it doesn’t seem there’s good blood between him and his father.

Keeping up with the Todorokis or, just me observing the Todorokis (Anime version): Ep. 15

So this is nothing else but a collection of informations, series by series, episode by episode about how the Todorokis appear in it, especially compared to the manga.

Finally an episode with PLENTY of Shouto and even a glimpse of Enji... sort of.

We start with showing Shouto twice while the boys are in the class. If you're an English manga reader you might not know but in the original Japanese manga Shouto was completely covered by the writing, the English version basically having to redraw him. So yeah, enjoy anime Shouto.

The anime also gifts us with a scene of Shouto training by night in the garden of his house, a scene completely absent in the manga.

On a sidenote this scene is also interesting because in the manga the one throwing punches was Kirishima, but in the anime they gave this role to Shouto and Kirishima is just training his hardening by letting himself fall from buildings and hitting the ground.

Something extra we also get is a peck to a series of Endeavor masks which are along the maks of All Might and Present Mic... and funny enough the Endeavor masks are almost cute instead than scary like Endeavor try to portray himself.

They also added people commenting on how Endeavor's son is a first year.

Kankyaku ‘Nē, shitteru? Kotoshi ni 1-nen naka ni ENDEAVOR no musuko ga irutte.’ 観客「ねえ、知ってる？今年に1年なかにエンデバーの息子がいるって。」 Audience “Hey, do you know? This year Endeavor's son is a first year.”

We also get an extra glimpse of Shouto in 1 A prep room.

Then we get the interaction between Midoriya and Shouto. As it's pretty long I'll break it in parts so you can compare the visual.

Midoriya Izuku ‘Todoroki-kun…... Nani?’ 緑谷出久「轟くん…...何？」 Midoriya Izuku “Todoroki-kun… What is it?”

Todoroki Shōto ‘Kedo, omae, ALL MIGHT ni meekakerare teru yona. I don’t particularly want to pry into that but… I’ll beat you.”

The dialogue is more or less like in the manga with the only addition of a 'kedo' (けど "but").

The anime kept Kaminari's comment

Kaminari Denki ‘Ō!? CLASS saikyō ga sensen fukoku!"?’ 上鳴電気「おお！？クラス最強が宣戦布告！！？」 Kaminari Denki “Oh!? The strongest in the class is declaring war"!?”

...and then of course Kirishima's attempt at stopping Shouto, though here it's espanded as in the anime Shouto, after replying to Kirishima, attempts to walk away while in the manga he remained where he was, waiting for Midoriya's answer. Basically the anime paints Shouto as even less social than the manga, though probably it is because by having him move they keep the scene more visually engaging... as well as give more value to the fact Midoriya will still try to reply to him.

Kirishima Eijirō ‘Oi oi oi, kyū ni KENKA koshi de dō shita! ? Chokuzen ni yamerotte…’ 切島鋭児郎「おいおいおい、急にケンカ腰でどうした！？直前にやめろって…」 Kirishima Eijirō “Hey, hey, what's with you suddenly getting all belligerent?! I say you should stop right before...”

Todoroki Shōto ‘Nakayoshi-gokko janēnda, nandatte īdarou.’ 轟焦凍「仲良しごっこじゃねえんだ、何だって良いだろ。」 Todoroki Shōto “We're not pretending to be friends, so whatever.”

The anime adds Kirishima's 'oi oi oi' but, apart from this, the dialogue is the same.

We've then Midoriya's reply.

Since the anime had shown Shouto was leaving, they had to add Shouto pausing and turning.

Since Shouto is now distant though, he's not included in the part in which Kirishima tells Midoriya not to be negative...

Midoriya Izuku ‘Todoroki-kun ga nani o omotte boku ni katsutte itten no ka... wa wakannaikedo. Sorya kimi no hō ga ue da yo... Jitsuryoku nante taihan no hito ni kanawanai to omou... Kyakkanteki ni mite mo...’ 緑谷出久「轟くんが何を思って僕に勝つって言ってんのか...はわかんないけど。そりゃ君の方が上だよ...実力なんて大半の人に敵わないと思う...客観的に見ても...」 Midoriya Izuku “Todoroki-kun, what you are thinking when you say you'll beat me... that's not something I know. But of course you're better... I don't think I can compete with most people when it comes to skill... Even looking at it objectively...”

Kirishima Eijirō ‘Midoriya mo sōiū NEGATIVE na koto iwanē hō ga…’ 切島鋭児郎「緑谷もそ一ゆ一ネガティブなこと言わねえ方が…」 Kirishima Eijirō “Midoriya, you too should stop saying negative things...”

However the anime expanded the scene again when Izuku explains his reasoning, having Shouto turn toward him, where before he just stared at him.

The anime left Shouto replying yes to Midoriya, though it added Shouto raising his head slightly.

Midoriya Izuku ‘Demo...!! Minna... hoka no ka no hito mo honki de TOP o neratterunda. Okure o toru wake ni wa ikanainda. Boku mo honki de tori ni iku!’ 緑谷出久「でも...！！皆...他の科の人も本気でトップを狙ってるんだ。遅れを取るわけにはいかないんだ。僕も本気で獲りに行く！」 Midoriya Izuku “But...!! Everyone... from the other departments is seriously aiming to be the top. I can't fall behind. I'm going to seriously go for it too!”

Todoroki Shōto ‘.........A~a’ 轟焦凍「.........あぁ。」 Todoroki Shōto “...Yeah.”

The anime only cut a tiny bit from Midoriya's dialogue, his 'Boku datte...' (僕だって "That's why I...") before he says 'Okure o toru wake ni wa ikanainda'

More anime only glimpses of Shouto as they gets inside the arena.

Then... the anime went a little overboard. In the obstacle race in the manga Shouto is carefull to ice only his opponents' feet... but in the anime he seems to ice the whole building (which would have sealed the exist for him as well as freeze completely all his opponents) and then as they somehow survived to that blast of ice, he iced his feets. It's visually impressive but practically it doesn't work well...

Todoroki Shōto ‘Saisho no furui. Warui na.’ 轟焦凍「最初のふるい。悪いな。」 Todoroki Shōto “The first filter. Sorry.”

Regarding the dialogues the anime added Shouto's 'warui na.'

Shouto is taken from another angle as he looks behind himself.

Yaoyorozu Momo ‘Amai wa Todoroki-san!’ 八百万百「甘いわ轟さん！」 Yaoyorozu Momo “You're too naive, Todoroki-san!”

Bakugō Katsuki ‘Sō umaku ika senē yo hanbun yarō!!’ 爆豪勝己「そう上手くいかせねえよ半分野郎！！」 Bakugō Katsuki “It won't work half bastard!!”

They kept the scene of Shouto admitting he expected Class A to manage to pass.

Todoroki Shōto ‘CLASS renchū wa tōzen to shite, omottayori yo kera reta na.’ 轟焦凍「クラス連中は当然として、思ったよりよけられたな。」 Todoroki Shōto “Of course I expected it from my classmates, but more than I expected (from the other classes) were able to avoid it.”

Mineta Minoru ‘Todoroki no URA no URA o kaite yatta ze zamaa nēttenda!’ 峰 (みね) 田 (た) 実「轟のウラのウラをかいてやったぜ。ざまあねえってんだ！」 Mineta Minoru “I've revealed Todoroki's true secret. Serves you right!”

In the anime, differently from the manga, Shouto isn't visible when they first show the robot...

...but we see him well in the following scene.

They've left Shouto wondering if the robots were the Villains for the entrance exam.

Todoroki Shōto ‘Ippan nyūshiyō no kasō teki (read: VILLAIN) tte yatsu ka.’ 轟焦凍「一般入試用の仮想敵（ヴィラン）ってやつか。」 Todoroki Shōto “Are they the fake enemies (read: Villains) for the general entrance exam?”

The anime takes advantage of the fact it's... well animated, to animate a lot more the scene in which Shouto froze the robot.

Todoroki Shōto ‘(Sekkakunara motto sugē no yōi shite moraitē monda na.) KUSO oyaji ga miterunda kara.’ 轟焦凍「（せっかくならもっとすげえの用意してもらいてえもんだな。）クソ親父が見てるんだから。」 Todoroki Shōto “(You would have done better prepare something even more amazing.) My shitty old man is watching after all.”

The dialogue again remains the same.

We finish with the anime keeping the scene of Shouto running ahead warning his classmates they can't pass in between the robots' legs as they'll fall.

Todoroki Shōto ‘Yame toke. Fuantei na taisein toki ni kōra shitakara... Taoreru zo.’ 轟焦凍「やめとけ。不安定な体勢ん時に凍らしたから...倒れるぞ。」 Todoroki Shōto “Don't do that. I froze them when they were in an unstable position... They'll fall.”

Again, the dialogue is the same.

Well, actually we finish with a last anime only image as Present Mic comments on what Shouto just did.

PRESENT MIC ‘1-A Todoroki! Kōryaku to bōgai o ichido ni! Koitsu ~a SHIVYY! ! Sasuga suisen nyūgakusha!! Sugee na! ! Ichinu da! ! ARE da na mō nanka... Which Is Harder Korean or Japanese?

My BACKGROUND:

I have been studying Korean for almost 6 years now and I recently started studying Japanese earlier this year - about 6 months ago. This post will just be me comparing the 2 languages and pointing out their similarities. The actual answer of which is harder or which is easier is for you to come up with and I also think it depends on your background - for example your native language or other languages you know well, which one you learn first, how much you have learned, etc. I know some people that have learned Japanese that find Korean hard and I know Korean learners who find Japanese hard or vice versa they find it easier.

Disclaimer: It's kind of difficult to add audio to all of this, so I'll leave a link to the Instagram post I made with all the audio.

SIMILARITY #1 - Sentence Structure

Japanese & Korean have the exact same sentence structure. Instead of me having to take time to learn it I was able to skip over that, because I'm already used to it in Korean.

The General Structure (which is sometimes more flexible than this) :

Example:

저는 오늘밤에 지수의 집에 영화를 보고 싶어요

私は今晩ジスの家に映画を見たいです。

I want to watch a movie at Jisoo’s house tonight.

저는 - 私は = I

오늘밤 - 今晩 = tonight

지수의 집에 - ジスの家に = at Jisoo's house

영화를 - 映画を = movie

보(다) - 見(る) = to watch

고 싶다 - たい = want to

(어)요 - です

SIMILARITY #2 - Numbers

You make numbers in Japanese the same way as in Korean. As long as you know the first 10 numbers, the rest become easy. Also some of the numbers even sound alike, making them easier to memorize. A major difference is that Korean has 2 number systems - one that’s Korean based and another that comes from Chinese. We’ll look at the Chinese one here - sino numbers.

(il) 일 - いち (ichi) = 1

(ee) 이 - に (ni) = 2

(sam) 삼 - さん (san) = 3

(sa) 사 - よん (yon) = 4

(o) 오 - ご (go) = 5

(yuk) 육 - ろく (roku) = 6

(chil) 칠 - なな / しち (nana/shichi) = 7

(pal) 팔 - はち (hachi) = 8

(gu) 구 - く / きゅう (ku/ kyuu) = 9

(ship) 십 - じゅう (jyuu) = 10

(shipil) 십일 - じゅういち (jyuuichi) = 11 (10 + 1)

(shipo)십오 - じゅうご (jyuugo) = 12

(eeship) 이십 - にじゅう (nijyuu) = 20 (2 x 10)

(samship) 삼십 - さんじゅう (sanjyuu) = 30

(gushipo) 구십오 - きゅうじゅうご (kyuujyuugo) = 95 (90 + 5)

(baek) 백 - ひゃく(hyaku) = 100

…and so on and so forth

This also goes for ages and telling the time. Both languages follow the same structure for this too.

AGE -

Basically just attaching (sal) 살 / さい (sai) = Age to the number

19 years old

(yeolahop sal) 19살 (Korean uses different number system here but it’s still 10 + 9)

(jūkyūsai) 19歳

TIME

Native Korean Number + O'clock/Hour + Sino Number + Minute

9:10 o'clock

아홉 + 시 + 십 + 분

く + 時 (じ) + じゅう + ぶん

SIMILARITY #3 - Particles

It seems like the same particles in Japanese are essentially the same as Korean. They have topic marker, object marker, time/location-marking particle, etc. There might be some unique ones for each language - like I said I’m a beginner in Japanese and probably haven’t come across it yet. Here's a decently sized list to of them that I noticed off the bat.

(eun/neun) 은/는 > は (wa) - topic marker

(ee/ga) 이/가 > が (ka) - subject marker

(eul/reul) 을/를 > を (wo) - object marker

(eh) 에 > に (ni) - time/location marking particle

(eseo) 에서 > で (de) - doing action at location

(ui) 의 > の (no) - possession particle (..'s)

(uro) (으)로 > で (de) - a means of doing something

(uro) (으)로 > へ (e) - to, towards

(buteo/kaji)에서/부터-까지 > から/まで (kara/made) - from/since-until

(mada) 마다 > まい (mai) - every, each

(to) 도 > も(mo) - also, too

(gwa/wa) 과/와/이랑/하고 (there are many ways to say and in Korean) > と (to) - and

(ina) (이)나 > や (ya) - and; or

(ji/jiyo/jyo) 지/지요 (죠) > ね (ne) - right?

(ege/hante) 에게 (한테) - に (ni) - to, from

(man) 만 > だけ (dake) - only

I noticed that most of the time these particles function the exact same, however there are some instances in which they cannot be used the same way in both languages. For example, sometimes は(topic particle) is used instead of が (subject particle) when in Korean you’d use 이/가 (subject particle) instead.

Example:

where is the bathroom?

화장실이 어디예요?

トイレはどこですか。

*if we followed my list above word for word and used the Japanese example and translated to Korean it would become: 화장실은 어디예요? which doesn’t sound as natural and may be seen as “wrong”. トイレがどこですか would probably have the same affect as the Korean sentence for reference.

Of course you must learn the rules in each language of when a certain particle must be used and not just look at this list and apply it to both languages as if it’s a “one size fits all” kind of thing.

SIMILARITY #4

I won’t go into much detail, because there are hundreds of words between these languages that are pronounced similarly or the same and share the same meanings. I made 2 other posts on it in the past.

EXAMPLES:

(gajoku) 가족 = 家族 - かぞ (kazoku) = family

(junbi) 준비 = 準備 - じゆんび (jun'bi) = prepare

(sajin) 사진 = 写真 - しゃしん (shashin) = picture

(dosogwan) 도서관 = 図書館 - としよがん (toshokan) = library

(byongwon) 병원 = 病院 - びょういん (byōin’) = hospital

WHICH IS HARDER / EASIER:

One thing I must say is that hard and easy are very subjective, and when I rank these they are on a comparative scale - for instance compared to Korean conjugating is hard in Japanese or compared to Japanese learning the Korean alphabet is very easy. But both of them have harder and easier parts in their own way, because learning languages is not a straight line to the finish.
