Shawn Mendes Biography
Tumblr media
Canadian singer-songwriter Shawn Peter Raul Mendes was born on August 8, 1998. When he started posting song covers on the Vine video sharing platform in 2013, he began to gain popularity. The following year, he attracted the interest of Island Records A&R Ziggy Chareton and artist manager Andrew Gertler, which resulted in him inking a record deal with the label. 2014 saw the release of Mendes' self-titled debut EP, and 2015 saw the release of his debut studio album Handwritten. With Handwritten's number one debut on the US Billboard 200, Mendes became one of just five artists in history to achieve this feat prior to turning 18. In the UK, "Stitches" peaked at number one, and in the US and Canada, it made it into the top ten. The singles "Treat You Better" and "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back" from Mendes' second album Illuminate (2016) debuted at number one in the US and made it to the top 10 in a number of other countries. His 2018 self-titled third studio album featured the lead single "In My Blood" as a supporting track. Mendes became the third-youngest artist to have three number-one albums when the album debuted at number one in the US. The hit singles "If I Can't Have You" and "Señorita" were released in 2019, with the latter reaching the top of the US Billboard Hot 100. Wonder (2020), his fourth studio album, made him the youngest male artist to ever have four consecutive No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200. Mendes has received numerous honors, including three Grammy Award nominations, one Brit Award nomination, ten MTV Europe Music Awards, eight Juno Awards, eight iHeartRadio MMVAs, two American Music Awards, and thirteen SOCAN awards. He was listed by Time as one of the 100 most important people in the world on their yearly list in 2018. Tumblr media

His father is a businessman from the Algarve who distributes restaurant and bar equipment in Toronto, and his mother is a real estate agent. Aaliyah is his younger sister. Shawn Mendes Career
Singing Career
Tumblr media
American talent manager Andrew Gertler became interested in Mendes in late 2013 because of her online celebrity, especially on Vine. He became a signatory of Island Records in May 2014. In June, Mendes dropped his debut single, "Life of the Party," which debuted at number 25 on the Billboard Hot 25. Mendes is the youngest singer to debut that high on the Billboard charts, having just turned 16 years old. In July 2014, he released his debut EP on a big label, which peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200. In the animated feature Underdogs (2013), he made his acting debut. 2016 saw Mendes make his live-action acting debut in The 100's third season premiere on The CW. The news that Mendes would be starring in Ivan Reitman's road trip musical feature film Summer of Love was first made public in March 2017. The creation of the script was supported by Reitman's production business, which was also in the process of arranging a distribution deal. The project was not yet in production as of September 2021. On August 20, 2021, Mendes did, however, release a single called "Summer of Love." Handwritten (2013- 2015) Mendes released Handwritten, his debut studio album, on April 14, 2015. It sold over a million copies in the US and quickly went platinum after making its debut at the top of the Billboard 200 chart. Since fellow Canadian Justin Bieber made his debut on the Billboard chart in 2010, Mendes is the youngest artist to do so. As the opening act for Taylor Swift's 1989 North American Tour, Mendes concluded her 2015 tour. In addition, he was nominated for a 2015 Juno Award in the Breakthrough Artist of the Year category. Mendes was nominated in 2016 for Artist of the Year, Pop Album of the Year, and Album of the Year for Handwritten. Illuminate (2016) The lead single, "Treat You Better," was released prior to Mendes' September 2016 release of Illuminate, her second album. The album opened at number one on both the Canadian Albums List and the Billboard 200, and the song peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. After wrapping up his first solo world tour in 2016, he made his Saturday Night Live debut in December of the same year on NBC. Mendes started a second world tour in 2017 to promote Illuminate. The tour almost immediately sold out. Mendes has performed at some of the biggest venues on the planet, such as London's O2. Before turning 20 in November 2017, Mendes scored three No. 1 songs on the Billboard Adult Pop Songs chart. Wonder (2020) Like his previous albums, Mendes' fourth album Wonder debuted at No. 1 in the US and Canada when it was released in December 2020. The duet "Señorita," which won the 2020 Juno Award for Single of the Year and was nominated for a 2019 Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, was produced by Mendes and his then-lover Camila Cabello. Mendes was nominated for five Juno Awards in 2022 as a result of Wonder, including Pop Album of the Year and Album of the Year. Mendes won the TikTok Fan Choice Juno Awards and became the youngest recipient of the International Achievement Award. The third-youngest person to reach 18 billion is Mendes. A few days prior to the 2022 Juno Awards.

In July 2019, he started dating singer Camila Cabello, a Cuban-American. Both of them were accused of trying to start a relationship for publicity because of their relationship, which caused controversy. However, Mendes insisted that their relationship was "definitely not a publicity stunt". November 2021 saw the couple's announcement of their split. In response to inquiries concerning his sexual orientation, he declared, "I'm not gay. Secondly, it should be irrelevant whether I was or wasn't. The music should be the main attraction, not my sexual orientation." Mendes has acknowledged publicly in his song "In My Blood" that he suffers from anxiety. He said, "I had a few conversations with a therapist. In addition, What works for you is therapy. It just depends on what you think therapy is. For example, therapy can be going out to dinner with friends or running on the treadmill while listening to music. It's something that helps you heal and divert. I consciously tried to spend more time with the people in my life. I discovered that, although I had believed that isolating myself from others would help me combat it, the only way I could do so was by fully allowing people into my life.

He began dating the Cuban-American singer Camila Cabello in July 2019. Mendes insisted that their relationship was "definitely not a publicity stunt," but when rumors circulated that they were attempting to start a relationship in order to gain attention, their relationship became contentious. The couple announced their split in November 2021. When people asked him about his sexual preference, he said, "I'm not gay. Second, it shouldn't matter if I was or wasn't. How’d you get into 5sos?
0_o it’s a long, terrible story, really. But I’ve got 20 minutes before my class, I can answer this. Buckle your seat belts, because its the most tragic set of stories you’ll ever hear.
This begins in like April 2014 lol.
Tbh, I remember the first time I had ever heard the name 5 Seconds of Summer. My best friend was going to see them play a show in the parking lot where the MMVA’s were held, but it was for a morning show or something. I remember her telling me at lunch she was going to see them, and I remember her telling me they opened for One Direction. I remember watching the morning show and knowing she was there, and she also saw them go karting if I’m not mistaken. Maybe there are two cases jumbling in my head, but I remember her going to see them, and Syd, I’m sorry if I’ve got them wrong. I just remember sitting in Rodg’s room at lunch and you telling me!
Anyways, after that they were glued into my head as the band that opened for One Direction, and I remember watching SLSP on TV on this channel after a movie had ended. I connected what my friend had told me with that, and tbh the music video scared me.
Then in June I went to an arts camp through my school, and this is the beginning of the end. This girl was a HUGE fangirl of 5sos, and she played them all the time in our cabin and she wrote fanfiction and for some reason we became friends, and so I read her fiction. So I kinda found them more through that. I had never really listened to them until that point.
When I got home, I would be in the old play room that we were converting to an art studio with my sister, and this girl would send me her fics to read, and I began to watch their music videos on YouTube. We watched like SLSP, Don’t Stop and that sort of thing, and one day I clicked on Don’t Stop the Lost Tapes, and I liked how they made me laugh. So then it was this girl sending me her favourite Keeks, and I followed them on Facebook. In September I started buying their music. SLSP, Good Girls, Heartbreak Girl, Don’t Stop, Amnesia and What I Like About you were the first six.
It then became like, buy two songs Saturday morning. Listen to those songs on repeat until next Saturday until I could buy two more. Repeat until I had gone through all the songs on iTunes.
Novemeber 26 is when I say its my day with them, because they were at the ARIAs and I watched them live for the first time on TV, and they won which blew me away.
Good Girls was actually the first MV and EP that I counted down and waited for.
I sort got depressed, and I kinda got into some trouble, um, this girl and 5SOS kinda being the source of the trouble, as well as people from school telling me I wasn’t smart enough to be in their classes.
So I had to disconnect myself from them for like a month, rebuild myself and continue. Jet Black Heart was the last release I was there for before my months break, and then Sounds Good Feels Good was released, I got tickets to go see them in July.
This is so long, but I don’t really think I knew I was going to be a long term fan of them until I saw them in concert. There was definitely a lot of power that night, and safety and security I had sort of been lacking. See before my depression type of funk came to light, I relied so heavily on them to keep me going. They were this life line that kept me from losing it all.
So somewhere between April 2014 and July of 2016 I decided I liked this band and I was going to keep them. I’m no longer friends with that girl, and after I made the decision to be a fan, they went on a year’s hiatus and came back with Youngblood. I think in a way every day I become a fan again. Like they’re always doing stuff that just makes me feel bigger than myself. They’ve brought so many people into my life through tumblr and their own friends, that it’s healed what broke in 2014/2015.
Sometimes I find it hard to believe I’m in my fifth year of being a fan. Life has been so crazy, but so fun since I met them, and I’m so glad they dug their way into my heart and stayed.
:)
Thank you for asking this question

From Stephan James to Bülow, Meet This Year’s Rising Stars
In our Winter issue, FASHION editors rounded up the 100 people, products and experiences we think will blow up in 2019. It’s our inaugural Hot 100 Fuse List. From the workouts you’ll be doing, to the new designers and artists you’ll see on your feed, this is your guide to being in the know this year. These are the next young actors, musicians and entertainers who will be taking over Hollywood.

65. Lamar Johnson
Younger (or just dance-obsessed) readers might remember Johnson’s impressive moves from the Family Channel favourite The Next Step. But going forward, people will remember Johnson, who hails from the Six, for his vulnerable and powerful roles in the urgent The Hate U Give and Native Son, not to mention the new X-Men flick Dark Phoenix. But don’t worry: The man can still dance. –Greg Hudson

66. Betsy
Elizabeth Humfrey looks more like a designer for Balenciaga than a girl who grew up on a goose farm in rural Wales, but both things happen to be true. Humfrey, better known by her stage name Betsy, launched her career on the heels of a stint at the Parisian fashion house and a degree from the revered Central St. Martins in London. Catch her if you can. Armed with a bunch of fierce ballads and a voice that could stop Cher in her tracks, this diva won’t be kept down on the farm. –Jeremy Freed

67. Stephan James
In 2018, James starred in If Beale Street Could Talk, Barry Jenkins’s follow-up to the Oscar-winning Moonlight. He also starred in Amazon’s drama series Homecoming, opposite needs-no-introduction Julia Roberts. It was, by all measures, a big year for any actor but especially for one who is still shy of his 25th birthday. “I’ve been lucky to be a part of a lot of really cool things, and there are a lot of projects that are coming my way now, which is really cool,” James says. Both of these projects premiered at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) to critical acclaim, a moment especially poignant for the Scarborough, Ont., native.
“TIFF has always been one of my favourite times of the year,” he says. James, who got his start back in 2010 as an actor on Degrassi: The Next Generation, will appear next year in 17 Bridges alongside Chadwick Boseman, Sienna Miller, Taylor Kitsch and J. K. Simmons. “I’ve never done a film with this level of action,” he says. “So it’s an exciting film.” It’s probably safe to say that James can expect many more exciting firsts in the years to come. –Pahull Bains

68. bülow
In 2017, Megan Bülow was a virtually unknown 17-year-old high-school student in Holland. Then she released her first song, a synth-saturated, anti-romance anthem titled “Not a Love Song” that had music journalists across the web calling her a “pop genius.” The song went viral on SoundCloud and Spotify, but bülow (she dropped her first name and the capital B for her new gig in the spotlight) had to finish her senior year before becoming a full-fledged pop star. She wrote her final exams, and then the German-Canadian singer-songwriter moved to Toronto. The city welcomed her with open arms: bülow starred in Roots’s 2018 Sweatstyle campaign, performed at the iHeartRadio MMVAs and headlined a show at the iconic Mod Club. Up next? After her two successful EPs, fans are anxiously awaiting a full-length bülow album. We’re hoping 2019 will be the year. –Meghan McKenna

69. Elizabeth Debicki
This statuesque Australian actress is no new kid on the block—you might remember her as Jordan Baker in The Great Gatsby or the gold-dipped Ayesha in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2—but this is the year we can expect to see her catapult firmly into the spotlight. At TIFF, it was impossible to hear any chatter about Widows—the buzzy new thriller from Steve McQueen—that didn’t involve ebullient praise of Debicki’s performance. And that wasn’t her only big TIFF premiere of the year. The 28-year-old actress also stars as a fragile but incandescent Virginia Woolf in Vita and Virginia.–Pahull Bains

70. Mouthpiece
There is plenty the world doesn’t agree on these days, but there is perhaps no topic quite as contentious and thorny as feminism. Which is why Toronto-based playwrights/actors Amy Nostbakken and Norah Sadava’s film Mouthpiece is so remarkable. In the film, which is an adaptation of their 2015 play, Nostbakken and Sadava play two often-sparring versions of the same character’s internal monologue. The story follows Cassandra as she grapples with the reality of her mother’s sudden death, reflecting on how her mother’s own feminism shaped her. “Social media has created this condition of extreme views,” says Sadava. “We’ve stopped giving ourselves time to process anything because it’s just about reacting. This film shows a woman processing difficult things. We need to start that internal monologue again.” –Pahull Bains
Photography by Alexander Shabazz
71. Karena Evans
You know Karena Evans’s work even if you don’t know you know Karena Evans’s work. The Toronto native directed four of Drake’s 2018 music videos: “God’s Plan,” “Nice for What,” “I’m Upset” and “In My Feelings” as well as the video for SZA’s “Garden (Say It Like Dat)” featuring Donald Glover. Not content to just stay behind the camera, this past year she also starred in two feature films—Every Day and Firecrackers, the latter of which premiered at TIFF—and has a recurring role in Mary Kills People. Not too shabby for a 23-year-old. –Pahull Bains
