I know you work in a college - do you have any tips for people applying to graduate assistantships while getting their MLIS?
It's pretty much like any other job application. In your résumé, highlight relevant knowledge (especially important for teaching assistantships), skills, and experience. Write a good cover letter (MLIS degree seekers tend to be verbally skilled, so you have a leg up there).
You are not necessarily limited to assistantships offered in/by the department your library program is in. If you can math, or Spanish, or organic-chemist, or Python/Java program, or write real good, look for TAships in the appropriate departments too.

Today in my cataloging class my prof used les mis as an example for locating classification numbers for authors in dewey and I was SO thankful we’re an online program because it meant no one could see me vibrating at a rate that could shatter glass because I knew every section he had to click on before he did it <3

Pretty clear to me that my master's program is intended to suck as many people dry of money as possible by pushing as many people through the curriculum as possible.

being a children's librarian is fun because you get to look forward to not having to answer questions about the printer or the mysteries of google drive like adult services does, but then you get asked questions about phonics and AR reading levels and you realize that there are mysteries the depths of which you can never fathom but you have to try because there is a very stressed parent right in front of you

my sorry ass contemplating how to write a personal statement convincing admissions people that my experience studying 20th century soviet history as an undergraduate qualifies me perfectly to study 19th century american history in their masters program:

Made the mistake of reading a reddit thread of a bunch of people talking about how easy and irritatingly unchallenging MLIS programs are and im filled with such dread and preemptive rage. I am not cut out for boredom and bullshit, and i kind of knew i was getting into something that was basically gonna be super easy and just busy work but now that im actually staring it down its so much worse :(
And my coworkers are all so excited for me and supportive and it’s already taking so much work to not sound like a total bitch when they ask me questions. Like no I’m not nervous about grad school because academia is a challenge, I’m nervous because if it isn’t challenging (which it rarely is) the boredom will turn me into a monster.

i have so many metadata-critical opinions on pc (photocard) sale listings it's borderline embarrassing. for the love of buyers finding your items, include all identifying information: member - group - source (album, dvd, etc) - special status/notes if applicable (is it a pob? is it affiliated with a particular album version?). spell out abbreviations like pob somewhere to account for users who are using the full term. include the condition (this is preservation metadata and not descriptive metadata, but it is still helpful info for your buyers). spell check the important keywords. stop spamming the tags, you may think you're helping yourself when in fact you are making everything more difficult for literally everyone.

on the one hand it’s very important to acknowledge the difficult and important work that goes into getting a Masters in Library and Information Science. It is a valuable post-graduate degree that is generally undervalued.
on the other hand calling it a Masters in Library Science or treating it like a genuinely needed and useful degree in the field immediately outs you as someone who has never worked in libraries before.
actual things library ppl call the degree include:
- mlis (most common, library ppl love acronyms)
- library school (every seasoned librarian i’ve spoken to calls it this. “oh you’re in library school!”)
- library science degree (straight and to the point)
- in school (don’t even get into it)
- masters in libraries (messy, incorrect, i love it)

If there's one thing you gotta know about me it's that if I cannot be dramatic, I will simply cease to exist. I will pace an assignment despite the fact that it's literally just asking for a series of short answers. I will include a beat in programming documentation comments for the flair.
If I have stopped being dramatic in literally any form of writing, presume I've died.

Gave someone $20 today (which is what I usually do because the cash on me tends to be only $1s and $20s) and was struck by the fact that I make less than $20k a year, which means that this single piece of paper is worth over 0.1% of what I make a year, and 1/1000 doesn't sound that big but there are 366 days this year, so it's well over a third of my allotted money for the day. Like, the money that's supposed to cover food, housing, gasoline, medicine, taxes, everything.
Now I don't give money daily, and my food and housing are covered by my parents and my medicine is covered by Medicaid.
But still. $20 is a significant portion of my income. Wild.
