I know you work in a college - do you have any tips for people applying to graduate assistantships while getting their MLIS?
It's pretty much like any other job application. In your résumé, highlight relevant knowledge (especially important for teaching assistantships), skills, and experience. Write a good cover letter (MLIS degree seekers tend to be verbally skilled, so you have a leg up there).
You are not necessarily limited to assistantships offered in/by the department your library program is in. If you can math, or Spanish, or organic-chemist, or Python/Java program, or write real good, look for TAships in the appropriate departments too.

i may have cracked the code wrt wtf i'm doing grad school wise next year... basically the school that's my first choice has an option called "mist-project" (mist being the abbreviation for "master of information studies" ie the school's ala accredited equivalent to the mlis) that's not quite a thesis program but involves a long-term supervised research project and it's geared towards students interested in pursuing further degrees after the master's level. so i figure i do that so i have the degree to work in archives + better credentials for getting into a phd program afterward if that's still what i want
#soapbox#i still have to email someone at memorial to find out if it's possible to apply for the ethnomusicology program with an mlis tho

After stalling for a week your bitch is ALMOST back to being excessively ahead on classwork. Goddammit.
#REALLY what i need is to finish this one fucking programming assignment so i can move onto the later stuff#i mean i already moved onto the later readings cuz i needed it to do a thing i wanted in this assignment (by instructor suggestion)#but if i finish it then i can jump right to the next assignment which would be great.#I do also need to do 7 readings for a different class. it's fine. it's cool. that's pretty simple.#i can finish all of that tonight right#(to be clear this is a joke)#however i AM done with literally everything I'm possibly able to do for my copyright course which is very exciting#hoping to get to that point with my other courses soon. unfortunately for programming that means finishing the damn thing.#megs vs mlis

Today in my cataloging class my prof used les mis as an example for locating classification numbers for authors in dewey and I was SO thankful we’re an online program because it meant no one could see me vibrating at a rate that could shatter glass because I knew every section he had to click on before he did it <3
#i was so chill (lie)#les mis#les mierables#library school is so fun he also demonstrated how to find feature films bc we’re cataloging a dvd each for an assignment and as he’s walking#through the steps i’m like its 791.4372. that’s ddc for feature films. AND SURE ENOUGH#the brilliance of working in a library while in my mlis program lmaooo its like hsve cheat codes but its just job experience

Pretty clear to me that my master's program is intended to suck as many people dry of money as possible by pushing as many people through the curriculum as possible.
#would have learned more in a different program#but the mlis certification is important to me#:/#like. you get kicked out super easy#but it is not super easy to get to that point.

being a children's librarian is fun because you get to look forward to not having to answer questions about the printer or the mysteries of google drive like adult services does, but then you get asked questions about phonics and AR reading levels and you realize that there are mysteries the depths of which you can never fathom but you have to try because there is a very stressed parent right in front of you
#istg grad school did *not* prepare me for phonics and AR reading levels#there are some things you learn in the mlis program and some you learn on the job and some you have to frantically research on your own tim#because you were not prepared to be seen as expert number 1 on teaching kids to read with very few actual qualifications in that arena#children's librarian#public library#tagging this although i normally don't tag my posts because if any children's librarians on this site have advice on navigating this#i would love to hear it#my boss' advice is generally don't worry about it they should be asking their child's teacher#but then some of them are homeschool parents#and some need an immediate answer and won't be able to get in touch with the teacher until after the long weekend#and some don't trust the teacher because they feel like the teacher isn't listening to their anxieties about teaching their child to read

my sorry ass contemplating how to write a personal statement convincing admissions people that my experience studying 20th century soviet history as an undergraduate qualifies me perfectly to study 19th century american history in their masters program:
#my current thinking is to try and go for a joint history ma/mlis program with the aim of being an archivist or academic librarian which is#like. scary. but exciting! but i'm concerned about pivoting fields#my secondary fields in undergrad were american and african american history (we need a primary and 2 secondary history major fields)#and the classes ive been taking as a non enrolled student at my current workplace are american history but lol.

okay so person who’s about to graduate with her MLIS here (with a couple years of school library experience and children’s librarian experience) with the latest ep of abbott elementary (I know they were just doing it for the sake of plot but I gotta make sure everyone knows?) I have four thoughts on the librarianship we observe in the ep
1. teachers wouldn’t have a three book limit within a school’s library loan policy. you’d be conducting interviews and looking at the school board’s loan system and seeing where they meet to see what meets in the middle and what can be loaned, altering policy as we go (can be done! Esp at the elementary level). because they likely don’t have an ILL (inter library loan) system reinforcing loan times and loan amounts wouldn’t be necessary, further reducing a limit need.
2. using unabridged Dewey is nice but not for a library at this scale. it’s too specific, and isn’t adapted in that detail in most school library settings.
3. If it’s reference material it would have a reference tag on it. the principle of convenience of the user would (an interpretation of ranganathans fourth law) clearly indicate that everything with a non-traditional loan policy would be sorted in the same place and labels appropriately
4. Booking? For visiting the school library? You shouldn’t really enforce a policy like that, I’m unsure as to why the library without a quiet zone like that didn’t allow for two classes to be in the space as once (this is undermined by later scenes where it looks like there’s more than one) so on this principle alone I’m team Barbara on that one a little, but without the threatening program consequences and whatnot (this is a three minute plot moment in the episode but whatever).
I LOVE the librarian and I hope we get to see more of Ms Inez in the show!!!
#library tag#abbott elementary#I don’t see anything from u Pitt or any other MLIS or ischool programs that require a practicum#but numerous schools offer it as a course pathway#abbott elementary librarian

Made the mistake of reading a reddit thread of a bunch of people talking about how easy and irritatingly unchallenging MLIS programs are and im filled with such dread and preemptive rage. I am not cut out for boredom and bullshit, and i kind of knew i was getting into something that was basically gonna be super easy and just busy work but now that im actually staring it down its so much worse :(
And my coworkers are all so excited for me and supportive and it’s already taking so much work to not sound like a total bitch when they ask me questions. Like no I’m not nervous about grad school because academia is a challenge, I’m nervous because if it isn’t challenging (which it rarely is) the boredom will turn me into a monster.
#i also like my little low hour shelver job right now too but i really want to move out in the next few years#and from what ive seen from people in the field it seems like its best to get jobs in the field while in the mlis program#because trying to after graduating is hard as hell#so its good im already here at least#and tbh i am just trading one no job field for another anyway cuz my ass was NOT getting a job in ecology either#but woe betide them if they make the mistake of asking the antisocial autist about accessibility issues in the library system#ecdysing#grad school misery#moss goes to school

god....what if i went into conservation education
#so many good opportunities in the UP and along lake superior.......#I'd probably need to go to a ~2 yr grad program or certification thing but#i mean it feels more promising for stable positions than an MLIS would#like the main thing turning me off from an MLIS is that so many positions are term positions and so I'd be constantly job hunting#and possibly moving#so i'd be more inclined to just stay with my current staff level job which is way mroe stable#but doesn't require an mlis lol#of course the flaw in this is living outside of a city or dense town and thus needing a car

i rly need to get on the grad school applications for real i don't have an academic cv and i haven't asked anyone for letters of rec or anything. the only thing i did was email someone about one program and i still don't know if i'm even eligible for that one
#soapbox#in terms of letters of rec tho i know who i'm asking#i'll ask my thesis advisor + one other prof in my department who likes me & who i've taken two classes with#then for mlis programs i have two archivists i've worked with who offered without me even asking#and if i apply for the ma in music i have a few family friends who are respected in that field & would def give me one if i asked

If there's one thing you gotta know about me it's that if I cannot be dramatic, I will simply cease to exist. I will pace an assignment despite the fact that it's literally just asking for a series of short answers. I will include a beat in programming documentation comments for the flair.
If I have stopped being dramatic in literally any form of writing, presume I've died.
#do you see what i did there#no but for real i did write dramatic effect into a programming assignment and was like 'wow. I'm really just like this.'#these are just the most egregious examples from the last few weeks#anyway lmfao#megs vs mlis

i have so many metadata-critical opinions on pc (photocard) sale listings it's borderline embarrassing. for the love of buyers finding your items, include all identifying information: member - group - source (album, dvd, etc) - special status/notes if applicable (is it a pob? is it affiliated with a particular album version?). spell out abbreviations like pob somewhere to account for users who are using the full term. include the condition (this is preservation metadata and not descriptive metadata, but it is still helpful info for your buyers). spell check the important keywords. stop spamming the tags, you may think you're helping yourself when in fact you are making everything more difficult for literally everyone.
#im SO NORMAL about ORGANIZING THINGS#definitely do Not want to cry every time i stumble across some random listing that literally contains only the member and group name.#don't know where the card is from? do some research! reverse image search is your friend!!#p.s. im fine my mlis program and focus on information organization and metadata is not ruining my brain

on the one hand it’s very important to acknowledge the difficult and important work that goes into getting a Masters in Library and Information Science. It is a valuable post-graduate degree that is generally undervalued.
on the other hand calling it a Masters in Library Science or treating it like a genuinely needed and useful degree in the field immediately outs you as someone who has never worked in libraries before.
actual things library ppl call the degree include:
- mlis (most common, library ppl love acronyms)
- library school (every seasoned librarian i’ve spoken to calls it this. “oh you’re in library school!”)
- library science degree (straight and to the point)
- in school (don’t even get into it)
- masters in libraries (messy, incorrect, i love it)
#mutuals and friends ignore me i wanna start using this blog like a blog#after uhhhhhh#9 years#whatever#idk i just flip flop to violently between ‘this is a valuable degree that i’m working hard towards’#and ‘fuck this library degree i’m just stacking books and making spreadsheets’#and both exist at the same time#and i feel like most other mlis students i know have expressed this too#it’s schrödinger’s degree#simultaneously useful and useless#maybe that’s just masters programs in general#i wouldn’t know
