R.I.P. Tito Jackson

Tito Jackson of The Jackson 5 died Sunday of a heart attack at age 70 in New Mexico. Jackson breaking his father's guitar string was the catalyst that started The Jackson 5. Joe Jackson discovered his son's musical talent after scolding him for secretly playing his instrument. Mr. Jackson purchased Tito his own guitar and convinced him and his other sons, Jackie and Jermaine, to form a musical group. One year later, in 1964, Marlon and Michael joined the band. The Jackson 5 released their first single, Big Boy," in 1968 on Steeltown Records, a local record label. Joe Jackson managed to get his sons a record deal with Motown in 1969, and from there they became teen sensations thanks to hits like "The Love You Save," "ABC," and "I Want You Back." The Jackson 5 traveled the world and performed for such luminaries as the Queen of England. They were the first boy band, and their success produced Jacksonmania, where fans mobbed them wherever they went. The merchandise built around them included posters, coloring books, stickers, and their own Saturday morning cartoon. Tito Jackson did not play guitar on those Motown records, but he started writing songs, and his instrument was heard on recordings after they signed to CBS in 1976. Fans were treated to his guitar playing when The Jackson 5 performed live. Jackson played with his family throughout their changes from The Jackson 5 to simply The Jacksons. They still toured at the time of his death and were seen on social media last week acknowledging a memorial built for Michael in Munich, Germany. 

As The Jacksons, they had hits in the '70s with "Enjoy Yourself," and "Show You The Way To Go" while they were on the Philadelphia International label. The family also had their own variety show at this time. By the late '70s and early '80s, the group released their big single, "Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)," and had further hits with "Can You Feel It," "This Place Hotel," and "Lovely One." They continued to release music until their last studio album, 2300 Jackson Street, which came out in 1989. In 1997, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 1995, Jackson's three sons, T.J., Taj, and Taryll, released their debut album, Brotherhood, as the group 3T.  They were signed to their uncle Michael's MJJ label and mentored by him. 3T was one of the biggest-selling groups in Europe, and their father Tito recorded a Jackson 5 tribute with them. 

In the early 2000s, Jackson embarked on a solo career and started playing in blues clubs with his band. B.B. King also handpicked Jackson to play in his band. Jackson had a hit record, "Get It Baby," with Big Daddy Kane in 2016 from his debut album, Tito Time.  He released his second solo album, Under Your Spell, in 2021. Jackson had recently moved to Claremore, Oklahoma, and had plans for an entertainment center in the Tulsa Arts District, a festival, and a documentary.

And that's what hurts. The "could've" part.

The part where he could've seen his children grow into these respectful adults with pride, humbleness, and care.

The part where he could've watched his sons become immersed into film and his daughter pursue so many things.

The part where he would've absolutely made some banger songs for the people we've lost. A song for Black Lives Matter. A song for the school shootings that we've seen over the years. A song of him watching his children blossom. A song of him healing from all the trauma he experienced as a child and throughout his career.

It hurts knowing that Mike isn't here. I look at the eyes of his children and my heart breaks more. Not only because he isn't here but they remind me so much of him. When Paris smiles, I get goosebumps. When Prince speaks, I get goosebumps. When Bigi appears, I get goosebumps. They all have so many qualities about them that shout "Jackson" but they also allowed themselves to be more than their family name. That was something Michael was keen on.

I've always admired the strength they all carried but Michael and Paris always have blown me away. Michael was belittled, treated like a punching bag, dragged along the mud. Paris has been stalked, chased, followed, harrassed, just like Michael. But the strength they both have is admirable. And I'm a bit envious - not in that way but I wish I had the strength. No matter their challenges, they've pushed through and I think that's a big motivator for me tryign to better myself now. I struggle with many mental health conditions, I want to lose weight, and I just wanna become the best person (emotionally; physically; spiritually) but it's hard. But I relate to them both.

But thinking about Michael recently has brought about so many things. I wonder if he knows that I exist. I became a fan after his passing but I did listen to his music beforehand. I was just a kid, though. I became a fan in 2012 - admired his music before then. I've admired his dance and songs forever. I still remember when he passed and it instantly saddened me. I've been a fan of Michael for half of my life and I just hope he knows about all of the new fans he's made since his passing. I hope he knows that I exist. I hope he knows that I will never stop defending him. I hope he knows - from Heaven. But I secretly know that it'll always feel like he'll never know about me - that I will only know him. I believe I recently stumbled upon many other fans that felt this way -- maybe it was on Discord, Tumblr, a MJJ forumsite, etc.. I'll have to check through my bookmarks and screenshots. I hope he's watching over me and that he'll visit me in my dreams. I miss him dearly.

Last Dance, One More Chance

I have been listening to Wu Bai’s Last Dance on repeat since the very first time I went to watch Someday Or One Day: The Movie at the cinema earlier this month. The song has stuck with me like a spinning record constantly playing in my head ever since.

Partly because of how addictive the song is - I can’t blame Chen Yun Ru for loving the song because it is AN EXPERIENCE - and partly because of the emotional damage the movie has dealt me.

Because I was (and still am) obsessed with the story, I binge watched the brilliant original - the drama from 2019 - over the last weekend. Having enough time to explore the characters as opposed to limited screentime for the movie, I realised how important Last Dance is to the storytelling both in the movie and the drama.

While listening to Last Dance from the same casette allowed Huang Yu Xuan and Li Zi Wei (as well as Xie Zhi Qi) to time travel, nobody else could.

The rules of time travel did confuse me in the beginning and while they were explained towards the end of the drama, there was no explanation as to why only HYX and LZW could travel through time using that casette.

Something else that piques my interest is the choice of host for both HYX and LZW. Yeah, the drama did make a qualifier that the host would look similar to the soul. This, in addition to who gets to travel through time, is a question I cannot shake off my mind at the moment.

There is a potential hypothesis that I want to explore.

Please note that from here onwards this post may deviate from canon and the intention of the scriptwriters.

HYX first listened to the casette while reading through her unsent messages to her deceased boyfriend, Wang Quan Sheng. It is obvious that she was deep in her longing for him (who was actually LZW in WQS’s body). Her third birthday wish that she had made was to be able to see him when she opened her eyes. And true enough, the moment she opened her eyes after losing consciousness on the bus on her way home, the very first person she saw was LZW; the actual LZW himself. HYX had travelled to the past and became CYR in 1998.

Fast forward to 2003, LZW left a prison complex after visiting his best friend Mo Jun Jie. This was about 4 years after CYR’s death. Feeling lost and full of despair himself, LZW listened to Last Dance on the very same casette, wishing that he could turn back time to the time when the three of them were living a happy life. He longed for the time he had spent with the CYR whom he fell in love with (who was really HYX in CYR’s body). His wish was not just for him to see HYX again, but also to prevent the incident involving CYR so that MJJ would be a free man. And so he got his one more chance when the casette allowed him to travel to the future; I’d argue he actually travelled to the past but as opposed to his (2003 LZW’s) past, he travelled to a future past created by him travelling to the future. In essence, this incident created a time loop for both him and HYX.

CYR was... CYR. The depressed teenager who had a bleak outlook in life. What she desperately wanted was not actually to disappear, but to feel like she belonged. She longed for a life wherein her family was not messed up, for a world she would not be disappointed in. But like what HYX told her, it didn’t matter how harsh life was to her, but it’s how she chose to face it. Like a patient who needed therapy, HYX took over the wheels and changed how the world treated her. Last Dance - the song she loved so much - gave her that chance by letting HYX took over her life.

While WQS’ story was not explored in detail, his misery and longing was more than just about his buddy passing away. It was him desperately wanting to live a different life and leave behind all the misery he had to endure. While his life figuratively ended when he drowned and LZW took over his life, wouldn’t he experience what LZW did during the entire time? And we know LZW had some good memories with HYX when he was in charge.

In the end, didn’t they all get their one last chance to live a live they so desperately wanted?

MJ hung out with world leaders as if he were one. He was the most famous person on earth and is still the most famous human that’s ever lived. His fame never really peaked, either. It seems as if he gets more famous each passing year, as if it’s possible. People worshipped that man like he was a fucking god. Tens of thousands of ppl stood outside his hotels just to see if they could get a glimpse of him. He was seemingly otherworldly, and ppl have so many quotes saying that his aura was so strong they felt like the energy and air was shifting whenever he was around. He had thousands of people fainting, out COLD just by being in their presence.

THAT is star power.
