MJ BOOK CLUB: The HIStorians is LIVE!

Based on the voting results we’ll be reading a book on Michael! 55.6% voted for a book about Michael and 44.4% on a book he’s read.

By joining the group you get full access to:

—(bi)monthly meetings

—the chance to select the next book (everyone who joins gets a chance ofc but we’ll make use of a random selector)

—seasonal giveaway (more deets will follow soon)

—FREE seasonal digital MJ bookmark which you can print or just collect (and I just might make special physical ones if y’all like ‘em and I’ll ship it to you)

The meetings will take place monthly. However, life gets in the way sometimes that’s why I want everyone to update how far they are with reading. I’ll do a reader check-in every week so I know if the meeting is still doable for everyone or we might need more time (depending on the length of the book/personal time constraints). But for the most part if you didn’t finish it on time but would still like to join the discussion (and not mind spoilers) then that’s also ok! There’ll be space to just chat and discuss but the main group meeting will encompass the book we all read and the question(s) I posed in the group (and if anyone else has any prompts/questions). No pressure ofc! This is all supposed to be fun and a safe space to spill our thoughts and feels about these books.

I’d love to kick off everything during Michael’s birthday month. So, I’m keeping it simple with these **7 titles. We’re open to title suggestions and we’ll have a list in the group so everyone can keep track of what was read and what’s been added to the list. This list will include both books on/about Michael and books Michael has read. The man had a personal library of over 10.000 books! So, the next member that gets selected will reveal the following book title at the end of the meeting and it’ll be highlighted in the group and on tumblr.

For those who do not wish to join the group/can’t but still want to read along, I’ll be posting updates here on tumblr on what book we’re currently reading. You just won’t have full access to all the options members would have.

I don’t want to make this any longer than it needs to be. The official schedule for reading will be decided once the title is chosen. We kick off reading by last week of July/1st of August 2024

**This book club is about accessibility and I want everyone to be able to read regardless of financial circumstances. I will do my best in providing you with digital copy and if possible a physical copy as a keepsake :) If you cannot afford any of these books and you’re a member of the group please contact me directly (if you’re a minor and the adults in your unit can’t afford it, I’d still need one of them to reach out to me about that so then I can discuss/get their permission). If anyone else is interested in helping let me know.

yknow one of the things about the way MJ was treated by the media that pisses me off more than most is how they tried to frame him as being genuinely dumb. they went out of their way constantly to make him seem uneducated and unintelligent when he was actually very smart and very well read in so many topics.

like that whole fake award thing MTV pulled just to humiliate him. they did it to make him look stupid.

it’s a ridiculous idea as well, because you don’t accomplish what that man accomplished if you’re dumb. you have to be a genius to do the shit he did.

“So, Ellie isn’t your cousin; she’s your sister even though you’re pretending she’s your cousin.”

“Yep,” Danny said while popping the ‘p.’

It was his dad’s birthday. Auntie Raven and Uncle Roy had visited to celebrate. Right now, Danny was trying to explain his family dynamic to Lian.

“And Auntie Jazz is pretending to be your aunt, but she’s really your older sister.”

“Uh-huh.”

“I’m so confused.”

“The only thing you have to know is that you’re my only cousin.”

Lian was still confused but nodded, happy. She didn’t bring up Mar’i again. The last time she had, the whole mood had gone sad. She didn’t want Uncle Jay to be sad again.

“What’d you bring, daddy,” Danny asked, changing the subject. His family tree was weird, and he didn’t want to think about it anymore.

“I made him a bracelet!”

“That’s so cool! I asked Jazz to take me to a used bookstore and bought him a few books I think he might like.”

Lian giggled, “He’ll love it. Uncle Jay is a bookworm.”

Danny and Lian fell into laughing fits. The two fathers found their respective children playing and giggling amongst themselves. It warmed Roy’s and Jason’s hearts.

“Hey, munchkins, Jay is about to cut the cake. Are you guys coming?”

The two children looked at each other and ran out, their fathers following them.

 Danny and Lian ran outside to a table Jazz, and Raven had put out. Balloons and banners were decorating the table with presents in the middle.

Raven brought out the cake and set it on the table.

Jason couldn’t help but revel in the joy and contentment permeating the air.  

He felt peaceful as his little family sang the birthday song, and if he wished for his happiness to last forever, well, no one would have to know.

Alfred couldn’t help but feel the loss of his missing grandson as his family sang Happy Birthday.

Still, he smiled as his remaining grandchildren, son, and great-grandchild wished him a happy birthday. And when he blew out the candle wishing for his family to be complete once more, well, he was allowed to think selfishly on his special day.

They ate the chocolate cake, and he was about to open birthday presents when the doorbell rang. Alfred’s heart skipped a beat. Could it be…?

No, better not to get his hopes high.

“I’ll get it,” Bruce said.

The family continued celebrating.

Bruce came back with a package, his eyes misting a little.

“It’s for you, Alfred. It’s from Jason.”

The room got quiet. Alfred got the package with shaking hands and opened it. Everyone in the room waited with bated breath. Here was the proof that Jason was alive.

Alfred took out a first-edition Dracula signed by Bram Stroker.

His grandson hadn’t forgotten him. He sent Alfred a birthday present that was special between the two of them.

Alfred couldn’t send him a present.

The older man couldn’t help but cry.

Popular senior jm sticking around after school to catch sight of bookworm sophomore mj after leaving the library, and offering to walk her home, riding her skateboard at times and showing off her cool tricks to mj, smuggest smile on her face whenever she nails them and can see mj’s eyes widening in admiration

Jm insists mj tries riding it one time and she does, but she is quite uncoordinated so she stumbles but jm catches her with her strong arms, and after staring at eo for a moments, moves in to kiss mj on the lips, gentle but firm😌 she will leave her at her doorstep and when she’s saying goodbye she sees mj’s disappointment in her eyes when she just waves so jm walks up to her and grabbing her by the waist pulls her in for a slightly more heated kiss that almost has mj moaning in jm’s mouth

omg… kissing her after catching her from falling on the skateboard… that’s so smooth

Face it Tiger…

For a neighbor Peter has never seen before, she doesn’t look very surprised to see him. Her eyes, green like dirty moss at this time of night remain fixed on him like spotlights. Red locks tress down her shoulders, one calmly leaned on the doorframe, backlit by the purple lights behind her. Her plump, sangria colored lips are quirked up in a smile that’d disarm anyone else, but lucky for him he’s used to the look she’s giving him, to being the subject of amusement. It makes him stand a little straighter, grounding himself with the reminder that he hasn’t been a meek bookworm in ages.

“Yo,” she greets.

“…Yo,” he returns, unamused. “Where’s Anna Watson?”

She whistles over the once over she gives him. “You’re looking for Anna Watson at two in the morning? I don’t think she gets down like that.”

“What? I’m—I’m,” Peter sputters at the extremely juvenile implication with a red face, collecting himself best he can, “I’m looking for the owner of this house. I’ve lived next door to her for years, and I gotta tell you, she never seemed like the partying type. It’s two-thirty, by the way.”

“Oh,” the girl takes a sip, relaxing shoulders he hadn’t noticed were tense. “Well, she’s my aunt. And she’s out of town for the weekend, so…you know the story.”

The revelation gives him pause.

Her aunt??

In seconds, Peter is struck by the recollection of a girl next door he’d never seen, the “nice girl, with a wonderful personality” May insisted on setting him up with. He wasn’t stupid. He knew exactly what it meant for his otherwise candid aunt to avoid describing her looks, let alone her have to get set up with him.

Or, he thought he did.

Now he’s wondering why the hell his aunt couldn’t just say she was a knockout.

“…You’re Mary Jane Watson?” He finally asks, stupefied.

“My fans usually call me MJ,” she quips. “Hope you’re not looking for an autograph though; got a little get-together to attend to.”

“Uh, right. About that,” Any astonishment on Peter’s face evaporates as he remembers why he’s here. “It’s like—three in the morning, and I’m trying to work on something at home, so…you think you could turn the noise down? Or, I don’t know, cut the whole thing off?”

The look is back. The cold, calm gaze that examines him as she, like everyone else he encounters, detaches herself from his feelings. He’s trying very, very hard not to slouch when she finally answers him.

“You’re Peter Parker.”

The guy who gets recognized by name off sheer virtue of being a buzzkill. “Yeah, that’s me,” he confirms morosely.

“And you’re sure you don’t wanna just come in?”

It’s an idea that makes Peter forget the last four seconds. One that actually makes him scoff. “Yeah, I’m sure.”

“Why is that?” She asks coyly.

“‘Cause I’m working on something, like I said.”

“And you’d rather do that than hang with with us?”

Well, considering the fate of New York likely depends on it… ”Yeah,” he deadpans.

“Well…” Anna Watson’s niece brings a finger to her chin in a show of contemplation, and he braces himself. “The way I see it—you don’t hang out with anyone, ever, you blow all your time “working on stuff” despite not having a real job—“

“I actually do sort of have—“

She continues uninhibited, wild and theatrical gestures illustrating her case. “Yet despite all of that, it’s Saturday, and the the best night of your life is right in front of you. The rest of your life could be behind this door, and you’d have no idea.”

Mary Jane closes her argument by holding her cup out to him, sloshing the surely alcoholic beverage inside like it was poured into the holy grail.

“Face it, tiger. You just hit the jackpot.”

For the second time that night, Peter stands there, stumped, ruminating on MJ’s flowery logic out in the cold. Now, he does a lot of cool things, and goes out more than most people his age…

But he’s never been to a house party. He’s never actually been invited. It’s just like she said—his social life is nonexistent and the chance to change that has landed right in his lap. He should know better than to be swayed by someone like Anna Watson’s niece at 2:30am, but would it really be wrong to just…

“Liz is here too, by the way,” MJ cuts in cooly, gesturing behind her with a single nod and her drink back at her side.

He bristles, and not from the weather, “What?”

“Yeah. She seemed pretty upset about earlier. I mean, this guy—Flash, I think?—he’s been helping her through it, but—”

“What?!”

“Yeahhh. ‘tween you and me though,” she opens, leaning forward conspiratorially, “I think he’s just trying to hook up with her. I heard him ask one of his friends to let him borrow a condom while she was in the bathroom.”

Peter’s heart sinks, a bleeding stone diving down deep, boiling hot waters. “…No.”

“I know, right? How does someone just borrow a condom? Is he gonna give it back?” MJ jests, pointedly oblivious to Peter’s turmoil. “It’s a weird place you guys live in.”

At that, Peter finally brushes past Mary Jane and into the house, letting the chatter and the music that’s way louder indoors than out brush off him like dust.

“They’re probably in the kitchen!” she calls out behind him.

Once he’s in the house, MJ closes the door with an accomplished glint in her eye.

“Dumbass.”

Villain smiled as he watched Sidekick bounce the baby on their knee. Even though Sidekick had been displeased with seeing the baby, Villain knew that deep down Sidekick was happy. And this was evidence enough. 

“I thought you didn’t want them around, Sidekick?” Villain said as they warmed the bottle to prepare for the baby’s next feed. 

Sidekick smiled and cooed at the baby. “They’re not so bad. So long as I don’t have to change a diaper, I’m good.”

Villain chuckled. “Don’t worry, I wouldn’t subject you to that torture.”

Before Sidekick could reply, the defense system notified Villain that someone was approaching Lair. “Who could that be?” He wondered as he pulled up the cameras on the tablet. 

Hero strode confidently into Lair. “Time’s up. My turn, Villain.”

Villain’s heart sunk. He had really begun to delight in the company of the child. In the caretaking. In the everything of being a father. He buzzed Hero in. “We’re in the kitchen,” he hoped that he could say the right words to convince Hero to stay. Or at least let their baby stay. 

“Why is Hero here?” Sidekick stopped bouncing the baby. 

Villain merely gave Sidekick a look and held out his arms. Sidekick wordlessly deposited the baby gently into Villain’s arms, giving the child a kiss on the forehead. “I’ll be back later, little one.”

“I can’t believe you would let Sidekick hold our baby,” Hero said huffily as she crossed her arms. 

“Sidekick is perfectly equipped to hold our baby. And besides, you say how much they loved Sidekick.”

Hero frowned. This was the longest she’d been away from her baby. “Please, let me take them home.”

Villain looked down at the baby in his arms as he spoke. “Or you could stay. We have plenty of resources here. And besides, you’d get all the help you need, more protection, and....I’m here.” Villain couldn’t look up. He didn’t want to see the rejection in Hero’s eyes. 

Hero bit her lip before speaking. “We can give it a try.”

Villain’s head shot up, his smile softening his features. “Really?”

Hero nodded. “It doesn’t mean we’re together. But....but I want our baby to be safe. And know their father.”

7. What kind of common romance tropes do you enjoy and what kind do you dislike?

I feel like my tastes in romance align very well with my tastes in fanfic and fandom shipping on the whole. I love a good enemies to lovers plot, and grumpy/sunshine. Not so much a fan of instalove, and also not generally a fan of how BDSM is done in romance novels (especially het romance novels, where it contains a lot of femsub which I am not at all into). Oh! And I HATE secret baby plots, although those mercifully seem a lot less common these days.

11. Favorite historical fiction.

Lol it's basically all crime novels combined with historical fiction, but that totally counts! The Blake and Avery series by MJ Carter is probably still my absolute favourite. But I also have a big soft spot for the Frey and McGray Series by Oscar De Muriel. And I am currently actively making my way through Benjamin January by Barbara Hambly, which is VERY good.

33. How often do you read by listening to audiobooks?

Pretty much never, tbh! I'm lucky enough to be able to walk to work, so generally just listen to music if I am listening to anything, and I work a form of customer service so I don't have the time when I'm there. And when I go on longer walks I'm either with someone, or listening to podcasts. I'm glad it's an option, though! I mean to check it out one day, it's just finding the time...

random headcanon question: what is mj's family like? like, who are her parents? does she have any siblings? that sorta thing.

oooh thank u for this!! i've been thinking about this a lot. first, i think that mj is an only child. i think she would have been less guarded at the start of the movie series if she had had siblings. if i ever did some au or someone had an oc, i feel like mj is more of an older sibling, but it's not part of my main canon.

also, based on canon and mj's insistence on ignoring the watson part of her hyphenated last name, it's pretty clear her dad is not a super active part of her life even though i believe he's a small mention in one of the movies. i believe he's very much a part of the reason that she believes if you expect disappointment, then you'll never be disappointed. i feel like her dad was very much a man full of false promises, full of insisting this time he'll do better, this time he'll stick around. she watched him make these promises to both her and her mother. eventually, she took his absence a lot better than her mother did and i hc that it created a lot of tension between her and her mom.

now, on the subject of her mom, i think she has the most complicated relationship with her mom. she has to because she's the only one who has been around for all of mj's life. she's around to fight with her, cry with her, help her grow, push her and hurt her, all the things family does. for a period of time in her early childhood, they were best friends. they nearly had a lorelai/rory relationship. she was the bookworm with a little snark, but her mom was the one with the truly quick wit. the problem was that whenever her dad would come back into their life, he would dim her mother's light. her wit would diminish. her care for mj would diminish. everything about their relationship was tumultuous and there was only so much mj could take of that. now, that she's gotten older and her dad is still in and out, mj can't allow herself to be as close to her mom as she once was.

sorry, this got long and hopefully this answered ur q! one final thing, i hc her parents' names as jasmine and jim, and she definitely calls her dad jim.
