@justinapatton: "I am mixed with #Creole #PuertoRican & #White :) #Growingupmixed I never really knew how to view myself. It was a constant identity crisis. (Not going to lie there’s still times when I feel that way). I’ve always been proud to be #mixed, but for years I just found myself not embracing it the way I should have. My hair in particular was the one feature of myself I wish I had loved more. Since my mom didn't have the same hair texture as me or the curls I had it was difficult for her to do my and my sisters hair. When I was 13 I highlighted my hair for the first time and then when I was 15 I got a straight perm on my hair. I did so much to my hair in my teens that by the time I was 20 my curls were not the same and my hair was very damaged. It has taken most of my early 20s for my hair to recover and for my curls to come back to the way they were when I was young. I just want for young girls to embrace who they are and love their hair texture and love their curls because they are beautiful and they are a part of what makes you unique!! While also saying the world would only see me as a brown person; I never really found I fit in with the black community causing me to self isolate as a kid and try to consciously “act more Black”. @briandthesea: "Hi my mom is #White from Wisconsin and my dad is #Black #French #NativeAmerican (#Creole) from Louisiana. Growing up, I always checked the boxes for White, #AfricanAmerican and Native American. If there was never a multiple option or an other option, I would decline to choose. Growing up I often was pretty insecure and thought I was ugly because I didn’t fit the standard white stereotype and I went to a mostly white school. Not until I moved back to Hawaii in high school did I feel like I formed into myself as most people in Hawaii are #mixed and people could tell I was mixed. Some people thought I was part Hawaiian, especially when I get a lot darker there. Growing up, I sometimes felt like people thought I was adopted by my blonde blue eyed white mom and same with my black dad. I didn’t think much of it, they were just my parents. I’ve been recently reflecting and coming to terms with my #mixedraceidentity in a deeper way. One time I lived with two full Black girls in college and they asked me what I was and I told them. They got super excited and told me they knew I was Black. When I was in Australia last year a White girl told me that I wasn’t Black and denied that part of my #racialidentity and it hurt. Oftentimes I don’t bring up to Black people right away that I’m Black, afraid they might think that I don’t deserve saying that because I’m not full Black. Being in White spaces like New Zealand or Oregon, I feel more insecure than being in Hawaii where the #mixedraceexperience is both accepted and celebrated.
