‘fate: the winx saga’ review

im very late to this trend but i finally watched this show all the way through.

if you watch the first episode alone, you probably hated this series, as you should. the first episode’s dialogue is awkward and stiff. the fatphobia was heavily present. and the outfits sucked. so did i hate the series? not even a little bit. 

first, and most importantly, lets talk about terra. i saw the most talk around her character and the fatphobia the show exuded. having watched all of it, i can safely say that terra was being bullied. not by her friends, or at least not her real ones, but the classic mean popular clique. any issues she faced with this bullying, her friends stuck up for her but didn’t get involved. they knew she could handle it and she did. she was shown sticking up for herself repeatedly. her friends have issues with her at first and i’ve seen a lot of people pointing that out as fatphobia. it’s really not as their annoyance of her was from her oversharing and inability to stop talking (relatable). saying that the girls disliked her because she’s fat is reducing her character to her dress size, something only the audience is seeming to do. she is a fully developed character and so lovable by the end of the first season. but i would love to get into her love life a little more or more into her powers as she is the only one who doesn’t struggle with her powers.

musa’s character is well written and fun. her mind powers are interesting and i loved seeing them develop as she learns control. the issues with musa in this series comes from the casting. the actress, elisha applebaum, is white passing but is half-Singaporean. the cartoon design from the original was fully asian. applebaum plays the character so well and is an amazing actress but many say that casting a white passing asian woman to play a fully asian character takes away from the diversity the original show had. as a white self-claimed film critic, i don’t think it’s appropriate for me to have an opinion. i did however want to bring it up as it’s being discussed in the criticism of the show. 

**** this is an edit: it’s been brought to my attention that the actress who plays Musa is fully white and that singapore is not an ethnicity. i saw a few articles say that she was half singaporean and didn’t question it (definitely should have researched that) now that i know she is fully white and not mixed, i do have an opinion. what the fuck. the actual fuck. that is so messed up. why would they take a show that was full of diversity in 2005 and make it whiter in 2021??? when i thought she was mixed i didn’t want to say anything bc mixed poc constantly get torn between the 1 drop rule where if they have any poc ancestor then they are poc or a minimum percentage of that ethnicity to be considered a “real” poc even if they grew up in that culture. i didn’t want to tell a half asian girl that she wasn’t asian enough but knowing she’s fully white? yeah that changes a lot of things. in doing more research, she is of middle eastern descent (as am i, still very much white) and if she was cast as stella or even bloom who were classically western europe in the original design, i would be so happy to see extra representation. but not when she took away a part from an asian actress - ESPECIALLY in a time when asian hate crimes are escalating. i don’t care if she’s a great actress and person…..recast her.

idk how many people watched the cartoons but i always hated sky and riven. sky was a much better character in this series. he still struggles with treating the fairies as damsels in distress, which bloom calls him out on. he has more depth and seems like genuinely good guy. riven was....lashing out alot. i liked him in the series because he does acknowledge his fatphobic remarks and ends up admitting to terra that she was a badass while he was struggling with fighting. he begins to work out some of his issues and i loved the dynamic that he has with sky where they get emotional with each other, both more than willing to point out the toxic traits the other has. i look forward to more riven character development. while i like sam, there was way more chemistry in one scene with musa and him. im hoping they keep the enemies to lovers idea that the cartoon had. 

NOW i need to talk about what i thought could improved. the wings. i loved them, like a lot, but i want at least one more of the girls to get them next season, if not all. it was a fun reveal but wings were such a staple fairy ability in the cartoon that i was nervous they wrote it out. they have the perfect opportunity to fix the outfits with the transformation scene. as we know in the cartoons they girls get new outfits when they transform. they’re fighting outfits could be so fun or maybe as they develop as fairies they develop different wardrobes. the outfits weren’t awful and at 16, most girls aren’t wearing skimpy bright colored clothing 24/7 while training. they don’t have to be the same as the cartoons but i would love to see terra in vintage 70′s clothing that works with her curves, stella in at least one glittery outfit, musa in a more pastel grunge look, aisha in matching sweats or some sort of updated street-style look, and bloom is actually fine but maybe  more flirty dresses with leather jackets and sneakers, mixing the tough and flirty look more consistently.

also, if you’re new to the fandom, you might not know things like what sky and riven can do, specifically who the specialists are and how they contribute to the fairy world. they struggled slightly with world building as i believe they expected most, if not all, people watching to have an idea of the world already. the show could have done a better job setting up these concepts.

i truly recommend watching the show before you write it off completely.

i push myself up and storm out of the classroom,hoping he wouldn't follow,but hey.this is hwang hyunjin we are talking about here.of course he was gonna follow.

"why are you running from me!"he calls after me as i am nearly running down the hall."because you're fucking annoying!"i call back through gritted teeth.

"i wouldn't be so fucking annoying if you would answer me!"he says loudly as he grabs my upper arm and turns me toward him.

"that's it!hwang hyunjin!touch me again and i swear to god i will rip your dick off and shove it down your throat!"i shout as i push him back.

"no"he says with a smirk.i raise an eyebrow at him,and push him to his back.i straddle him and grab his jaw,pulling his head up."you're going to be a brat then?"i ask.he smirk up at me."you can't break me"he says cockily.

i cock an eyebrow at his words."alright.let's make this a game.if i break you,you will be my sub,and you will stop pestering me at school.if you win,you can continue pestering me,and,i'll treat you to anything you want"i say as i drop his jaw,his head falling back onto the mattress.

"sound fair?"i say as i stare down at him."fair enough"he says."okay.i won't go easy on you,hwang"i say as i start to lean down.

i see fear flash through his eyes and smirk as i lightly lick a stripe from the base of his neck,to behind his ear."don't worry baby boy,i will take good care of you"i hum as i drag my hands up and down his chest.

he whines at my words and nods his head."o-okay"he says breathlessly."what's the matter?i haven't even done anything"i tease as i graze my lips over the shell of his ear.

"f-fuck you-u"he stutters out.i grab a fist full of his hair,and tug his head back.he groans out,and gasps when i latch my lips to his neck.

"i'll mark you up nice and dark so everyone knows you belong to me"i say harshly as i move to the other side of his neck,sucking harshly and biting here and there.

i hear small whimpers,and whines leave hyunjins mouth,and i lean up,looking into his wide eyes."what,you like that idea?you belonging to me?"i ask as i trace his lips with my thumb.

he nods his head weakly."i-i belong to y-you n-now"he stutters out.i smirk at his words,"i'm winning baby boy"i tease as i tug off his shirt.

i rack my eyes over his upper body,a subtle heat pooling between my legs."l-like what y-you see?"he stutters out.i glare up at him.

"no talking unless i ask a question"i warn,venom dripping drom my lips as i take hold of his neck."got it,slut"i growl,making him nod submissivly.

i lean down,leaving wet kisses along his chest,and grinding down on his hips."m-more pl-ahHH"he cuts hinself off with a moan.

"god.i can't fucking stand you.always wanting more than what you get"i groan out in annoyance."wh-why don't you do something about it t-then"he says,trying hard to sound strong.

i chuckle down at him."because if i do,you won"t be able to think straight for a day or two"i say,smiling innocently at him in realization.

"you want to be a good boy.don't you.you want me to use you how i please.you want to be my good boy so bad"i say as i tilt my head.

"but your big ass ego wont let you submit without putting up a fight"i say as i grip his neck,halting the mivenent of my hips."ngghh-o-okay!okay!p-please t-touch me.p-please"he whimpers out as i tighten my grip.

i grind down harshly on him,smirking as his body jolts."promise to be my good boy?"i ask sweetly as i caress his cheek softly,largly contrasting the movements of my hips.

"yes!i p-pro-fuck-i promise to be y-your-FUCK-your good boy"he says,pinching his eyes shut,tears slipping down his cheeks as his neck and chest turn a bright red.

"that's all all i wanted to hear baby boy"i say softly as i pull down his pants."you're in for a long ride tonight"i say as i tug off my clothes.

me: like lots happened. okay so octavia is on the war path like EDEN IS OURS and clarke is like that’s nice except there are sandstorms and you should probs listen to me because, idk, i survived out here for six years but octavia is like mmmm  no, me and my minions don’t trust you. but there are blarke heart eyes and they all set off through the desert.

nikki: so is octavia being set up to be a villain too? or is she still the creator’s pet?

me: we HOPE so?? at this point, there’s really no convincing redemption arc 

nikki: yeah...

me: so then diyoza (evil army lady) holds off abby’s pills unless she can fix the third of her army that has weird spots on their lungs and abby is like okay cool thanks i can’t function because i’m an addict but also i need you to keep my boyfriend alive so sure

nikki: that’s manbun guy, right? 

me: lol yeah me: meanwhile bellamy and clarke have more heart eyes and a you’re so smart and strong no YOU’RE so smart and strong convo around a fire

me: lol basically me: so they lose some men and Octavia refuses to die (her plot armor is SO strong at this point) and we cut to ZAVEN!!!!

me: oh we’ve collectively ignored that; zaven they shall always be

nikki: milven just sounds like mileven?

nikki: also my phone kept correcting that to ‘milken’ so that’s a nope

me: ew me: i mean, there’s a dark corner that calls them ‘shaven’

me: lol. so zeke comes over as she's being tortured and is like hi I'm really sorry and she's like I'm literally being killed for something I didn't do and just to prove her point, mccreary dumps water on her and is going to try the shock collar again

nikki: is mccreary the one who kind of looks like a grungier version of manbun?  nikki: because like i keep seeing gifsets, and i assume they’re different characters, but if you put a gun to my head and asked me which was which i would just like, get right with God haha  

me: hahaha  me: i mean, abby has a type? not saying they’re setting anything up there, but she films nicely with both of them

me: so they decide that the best way to torture her is to threaten her cockroach so Murphy is brought in and beaten and finally zeke is like okay yeah now the love of my life is crying and i can’t have that so he pulls a gun on mccreary and there's zeke + raven + murphy scheming to get them out of that.

nikki: YAY ZEKE + RAVEN + MURPHY nikki: #DREAMTEAM 

me: RIGHT???

nikki: also i saw this one angsty meta/gifset that said that murphy was gagged because they weren’t even asking him questions; they were just torturing him for fun? and he was okay because he thought raven was okay?

me: yeah, i wrote that 

nikki: really?? i almost sent it to you

me: haha yeah. the gifset was someone else, but the first comment was about how he had to have been just really sassing them and i was like uh no it means nothing he said mattered to them 

nikki: yeah i saw that and was like nope, it’s the ‘they didn’t even ask me any questions’ han solo moment nikki: which i would know, since it crops up in three (3) of my own stories 

me: IT’S A GOOD MOMENT

nikki: it’s a great moment nikki: oh, murphy

me: i know; bless him. so zeke lets murphy go, to warn bunker fam about the missiles that he now has to disable and fire on them, but whoops maybe he double crossed them bc murphy's shock collar is still on and raven is like DUDE this is inconvenient because you're smart like me and pretty like me but now my friend's going to get hunted because of you; not cool. 

nikki: so is raven still with the zeke crew?

me: yeah me: how else is she supposed to see his character growth and jawline?

nikki: valid, valid

me: so then Murphy reunites with space fam, all is snarky and well, then his collar hits the end of his leash and they realize he can't go with them and he is like guys you have to save everyone else, just leave me, and everyone looks sufficiently conflicted but like it's literally 800 lives and change vs Murphy's, so he hops out of the rover BUT THE DUST SETTLES AND EMORI STAYED BEHIND TO HELP HIM 

nikki: YES EMORI nikki: GOOD FOR HER

me: I KNOW I WAS SO HAPPY me: so monty gets word to bunker crew that missiles are on their way so they hides from the missiles in a sand storm (literally hovered over octavia to protect her from shards of glass), but the day is saved. 

nikki: oh cool, glad monty’s still relevant nikki: you know what, good for octavia. goals, right there. i need a cult. 

me: the sky clears, sun is out, now that octavia has recovered from almost dying twice and being saved twice by bellarke she gives Bellamy a hug and aw cute until she says ily but question me again and you're my enemy and I will kill you and clarke is like cool cool cool AND THEN the rover pulls up, there's a cute hug with clarke and madi BUT also a becho kiss and clarke is like well this is news happy I found out like this instead of at any point in the last whole episode, awesome, fantastic, the end me: oh also diyoza and kane take tequila shots

Prison do not disappear social problems, they disappear people. On Mr Pickwick's first night in jail he meets Smangle & Mivens who strike him as highly original characters, the like of which he had never met before, but upon further acquaintance with the prison's inmates, he comes to realise that the inmates are Smangle & Mivens again and again.

Unfortunately I missed my last session on Sunday, so it would be the Sunday before last. I play with a group of people in the @weareadventurers Collective. I play as an aasimar monk named Miven.

11. What is your favorite edition of d&d?

I’ve only played 4e and 5e and between them, I really prefer 5e. I’ve heard good things about 3.x but I’ve always been the one to get my irl friend groups into D&D so I preferred not to go into the edition with SO MUCH CONTENT.
