Early morning in mid February on the Mistaya River on the Icefield Parkway, Banff National Park. Taken just as the sun rises over the horizon and lights up the valley and Mount Chephren.

Mistaya River and a Mountain Backdrop with Mount Sarbach and the Canadian Rockies (Banff National Park)

Mistaya River and a Mountain Backdrop with Mount Sarbach and the Canadian Rockies (Banff National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: This whole day was magical with the mountains all around...what an amazing view at pretty much any turn! This is at Mistaya Canyon with a view to the South and West. For this image, I loved the river flowing through the glacial valley...nature in action over the eons of time. I know many talk about their piece of heaven being this city or tropical beach. This setting in the mountains is it for me, whether Alberta, Montana, Alaska, Colorado...any place there's big, huge, magnificent mountains!

Mountain Hunting by Aaron M Via Flickr: The Canadian Rockies are known for epic mountain and lake scenes, beautiful peaked mountains with colorful lakes sitting at their base. Moraine Lake, Lake Louise, and Peyto Lake, just to name a few. When we set out on our nearly week long trip to Banff National Park I expected to see as many of these mountain scenes as I could. Willie and I explored the area close to Banff National Park on our first few days, when the weather was clear and easy to get the lay of the land. Then a big snow storm hit and dumped over a foot of snow on the area. Our ability to venture further out and see many of these epic mountain scenes began to decline. On our last full day in Banff I turned to Willie and said "there's no way we're coming here and not seeing Peyto. Hop in the car, we're going!" And off we went ... which Willie was perfectly fine with since he wasn't driving and could do his typical thing: fall asleep. I was quite glad we had rented an all-wheel drive SUV because the road to Peyto, Icefields Parkway, really wasn't plowed. By that I mean that one lane had been plowed and it became a game of dodging cars. On the way to Peyto we had the plowed lane but on the way back ... well, lets say that was not the most fun time to be the driver. I had brought snow-shoes with me, in the event of needing to hike through the snow, and it turned out to be a good decision because the mile long trail to Peyto was filled with 2 feet of snow! A nice family from Colorado, whom we exchanged contact info with, sludged through first and carved out a path that made our hike with heavy camera gear much nicer! Although the epic mountains behind Peyto Lake never made an appearance, it was still an epic view! I've been wanting to put more of a "people element" into my photos lately, so when Willie was done taking his photos I hopped on down and placed myself in the photo. Marvellous Mistaya
flickr
Marvellous Mistaya by Darren Umbsaar Via Flickr: Yesterday my dad and I tried to reach the remote Capricorn lake tucked in behind Mistaya Lake. We didn't make it as the terrain was very tough and slow going. We spent about half our time hiking in sandals either along the shallows of the lake to avoid bushwhacking or during the numerous creek/river crossings. The access to Capricorn Lake follows a rather hazardous canyon with exposure to rockfall and difficult boulders to climb over. We turned around shortly after entering the canyon as we were already 4 hours in. Plus we got caught in a thunderstorm for at least half an hour, and had to wait it out on a sketchy slope... It's quite an unforgiving environment, yet beautiful all the same. I'd love to go back, but the canyon looked too challenging for us. Anyways, in the morning before all the chaos happened, here was the stunning view at the inlet entering Mistaya Lake. Tons of fireweed blossomed along the shore of the lake. The sheer abundance of flowing streams and wildflowers was something that I had never seen before; it was incredible! I made no hesitation to walk out into the water to get this photo as there were many more creek crossings to come later in the day ;)

The Mistaya River Flowing into a Canyon (Icefields Parkway) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: An overlook at Mistaya Canyon. I wanted to capture an image of the river as it flowed to the canyon. With the mountains as a backdrop, I felt it added to the view, leading one down stream to rapids near where I was standing.
