From the archive – Miss Fisher Fandom 30 Day Challenge, Day 8 Saddest episode. This is what I wrote in the original Tumblr post on 09-Feb-2015.

“As an immigrant myself (from a Southeast Asia country to the U.S.), the topics of where one’s loyalty laid (or where it was perceived to lie) during wartime as well as the struggle of being completely integrated into and accepted by the adopted country are very intriguing to me. Even though this was a fictional situation set in a time period almost 100 years ago, and thankfully I haven’t encountered similar situations in real life, I sympathize with the pain and suffering inflicted upon the Voigt family. The world is full of people who are loving and embracing, but there would always be small groups who are ignorant, biased, resistant, and hostile toward the “outsiders” like those in Maiden Creek. Like Jack said, ‘May we never see the likes of her again’.

What’s tragic was that Valma was also a victim herself. Both her husband and son were killed in the war; the heartache and despair drover her over the edge and killed Mikael Voigt, a German immigrant who triggered her hatred toward the enemy country. Sergeant Ford and Dr. Ryan sympathized with her and helped her covered the truth. Ten years later, when Oskar Voigt suspected the real reason of his father’s death, Dr. Ryan had to kill him to keep the secret from being dragged out. Their actions were inexcusable, but the circumstances were sympathizable.

Thankfully, there were also some lighthearted and romantic moments woven into the storyline, like Jack coming to Miss Fisher’s aid after receiving her encrypted phone call, Hugh’s proposal to Dot, and Miss Fisher putting the new hat on Jack. These moments injected some warmth into the episode and lifted our mood a little.”

Day Two - Favourite Male Character

Gosh I wonder who I should pick?  Jack Robinson of course!!!!  He is the calm in the storm.  He is cautious in matters of the heart.  He has a love of literature and a curiosity for science.  He’s a good dancer.  He’s a survivor and so much more.  And he’s not bad looking either!

FTH2022 - by the numbers

Signups for FTH2022 have been open for almost exactly 3 days. In that time 296 creators have signed up to offer 379 auctions in 175 fandoms. (To put those numbers in context, last year in the first FIVE days of signups, we had 256 creators sign up to offer 325 auctions. This year is looking to be BIG!)

I love this, @whopooh Although Raymond is not my favorite male character besides Jack, Hugh, Mr. Butler, Bert, and Cec (ha-ha, it’s a long list, I know), but I like him a lot. He has the boyish charm and naivety that make you want to protect him, and his determination to realize his childhood dream makes you want to root for him and help him. I hope he and Clara have a long and happy union and his film studio flourish.

MFMM 30 day’s challenge: favourite male character

The second question for the Miss Fisher 30 days challenge is “Favourite Male Character”, and I view this as a bit of a trick question. There is no doubt that Jack Robinson is my favourite, and I love what they have done with him as a character and the nuanced way Nathan Page plays him (I expanded on this a bit in a tumblr post on why Jack really is worth all our love). So the question must be, bar Jack, who is my favourite male character.

But also, all the regulars in the show are wonderful, and I cannot pick out one between Hugh, Mr Butler, Cec and Bert. So the question must be, bar the regulars, who is my favourite character.

And for this, I actually do have an answer. Amid several really great characters, I choose Raymond Hirsch. He is rather sweet and fun and a little bit adorable when he whines, but above all he brings us a delightful glimpse into how Phryne has friends and how Phryne was as a child. We can still see small remnants of that boy and girl who would go nicking fruit together, and have the other’s back (Raymond saying “Tell him, Phryne” just makes me laugh). And it’s so nice to see Phryne negotiating that friendship with her new loyalty, to Jack and the detective work. I adore her taking a small double take and then saying “It’s a fair question, Raymond”. I think he even kind of deserves Clara, although she’s an even more lovely side character than he is.

Miss Fisher Fandom 30 Day Challenge – Reprise

Day 30 What I want there to be in the movie

The original challenge was held before S3 was aired, so the topic was “What I want there to be in season three”. My answer was “More Dr. Mac!” because our favorite doctor was in only 4 episodes in S1 and 6 episodes in S2, which was definitely not enough. When S3 started, we were delighted to see that she took over the city coroner position and appeared in 7 episodes; however, we were also slightly disappointed that her total screen time was still quite limited and without a dedicated storyline. Since her name has not been mentioned in any press releases or news about the upcoming movie, apart from a surprise cameo, I fear that we won’t be seeing Dr. Mac at all. What a shame.

So, what I want there to be in the movie? To be honest, I am ecstatic that Phryne and Jack will be teaming up again to do what they do the best, so I will take whatever Every Cloud has in store for us. If I must come up with something, I’d say a happy “family” reunion moment that includes not only Mac but also Mr. Butler and Jane. (Note: In addition to Phryne, Jack, Dot, and Aunt P, we know that Hugh, Bert, and Cec will make appearances, according to IMDb.) If we get to see Phryne and Jack kissing under the starry sky in the Negev Desert or waltzing at Aunt P’s party all night until they both lose all reason, it would be the most luscious icing on the cake.

Miss Fisher Fandom 30 Day Challenge – Reprise

Day 25 A character I want to know more about

In the original challenge, my answered was Mr. Butler (link here). I still do want to know more about him, but I am now adding Miss Lee from S1E5 Raisins and Almonds to the list because she is one of my favorite characters.

On the show, we simply knew her as Miss Lee, but the book revealed that her first name was Sylvia. Kerry Greenwood described her look as “a strong-featured young woman, with washing-blue eyes, a firm mouth and chin, and a carefully controlled mouth”. I think that Kat Stewart was perfectly cast for the role. She has the right look to begin with, and with the help from the excellent hair, make-up, and costume teams, she brought the image to life.

In the book, Miss Lee was “a perfectly self-contained young woman, who required no masculine attentions, merely wishing to get on with her own neat life in peace”, but I like the TV version of her having an affair with a married man whom she was accused of murdering. Even if he hadn’t died, they were destined to be apart anyway because of his Zionist dream. So romantically tragic – or tragically romantic? Anyway, one of my favorite scenes was when Miss Fisher pointed out that she didn’t seem very distressed about her boyfriend’s death, Miss Lee replied “Because I didn't break down in tears and bear my soul? How could you begin to know how I'm feeling?” Kat Stewart delivered the line with soft voice in a controlled tone, which cracked at the end and reveal her hidden emotion. Superb acting.

Although the book provided a little more information about her than the show did, there is still a lot that I would like to know. Where was she from? Did she have any family? Did she go to university? Where did she get the money to open the bookshop? What became of her after being acquitted of murder? There could be so many stories to tell. If only I were clever enough to write about them.

Miss Fisher Fandom 30 Day Challenge – Reprise

Day 26 Favorite episode of Season 3

The original Day 26 challenge was “A character from the books you wish was in the show”, and my answer was Mrs. Butler (link here). At that time, I had not read any of the books, so the choice was rather random. For the challenge reprise, @izzyandlouie changed the topic to Favorite episode of Season 3, and my answer this time is not random – Game, Set and Murder.

To some fellow fans who suffer from Arachnophobia, this episode (especially the opening scene) is hard to watch. Fortunately, it doesn’t bother me, so I am able to enjoy all the wonderful storylines in this episode. First of all, Hugh returned after an extended fishing trip (a little over 3 weeks, from around August 5 to August 30, 2019, per my Miss Fisher Timeline Research). Now promoted to Sr. Constable, thanks to Jack, Hugh still got stuck with uncomfortable duty like picking up Miss Fisher’s “internal device” in front of his superior and fiancée. That bedroom sequence was hilarious and wouldn’t have worked if it were Constable Martin. (No offense, Neville.) We were so glad you were home too, Hugh.

Dot and Hugh’s reunion might have been sweet, but Jack and his newly anointed Special Constable Phryne Fisher captivated our hearts. “I've been saving this since I was ten years old…for Buffalo Bill but you'll have to do” – swoon. “Mr. Burn, open up! Detective Inspector Jack Robinson.” “And Special Constable Phryne Fisher” – hilarious. “Would you get off my desk, please? Just remove yourself, Miss Fisher” – sexy. “I suppose you'll be wanting your badge back, then.” “Well…no. No. I think you've earned the badge” – awww.

Day 28 Most ridiculous episode

I am going to stick with what I chose four and a half years ago – S2E7 Blood at the Wheel. (See text below; link to original post here.) If I have to pick another one, it would be S2E13 Murder under the Mistletoe because of a post that @hysydney did on 14-Dec-2015 called “Mode under the Mistletoe - the silly season”. Check it out here. It’s a must-read for me every Christmas.

I find it ridiculous that when Jack found out that it wasn’t Miss Fisher in the car crash, he didn’t just grab her into his arms, give her a long, hard kiss, and say “Thank God, it wasn’t you; I thought I lost you!”

I find it ridiculous that Lachlan Pepper thought women were biologically unsuited to driving, given his history with Gerty Haynes, who was a winning race car driver for years.

I find it ridiculous that Lachlan Pepper accepted the credentials of Valentina Runnemallova so easily. As the president of the VAA, you think he would be smarter than that. (By the way, I also find Dot ridiculously cute as Valentina.)

I find it ridiculous that the twin carburetors were so easily transferred from car to car without being noticed by anyone.

I find it ridiculous that for some reason Miss Fisher used her garter to delay Jack instead of asking him to give Ailsa time with her daughter Millie before being arrested. Based on their working history together, she should know that Jack was not an unreasonable man (no matter how upset he was with her).

I find it ridiculous that when Miss Fisher jumped into the car at the starting lineup, Lachlan Pepper didn’t kick her out right there right then. He gave her the chance to sabotage the race and then whined about it later.

I find it ridiculous that two people who cared about each other so deeply could not (or would not) put down their guard and admit their feelings honestly. After watching the last scene, I felt like I was the one lying in the wreckage!
