The Charge of the International Express Man
As often happens, I was in the middle of something else when I thought "oh, I should check that line, it sounds familiar, actually."
Tumblr media
"Ours is not to reason why, ours is to deliver packages."
This is from S1, 1x04. Leslie the International Delivery Express man is saying goodby to Maude on Saturday morning.
It turns out that this is a misquote of a famous poem The Charge of the Light Brigade, by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. It comes from the second stanza:
“Forward, the Light Brigade!” Was there a man dismayed? Not though the soldier knew    Someone had blundered.    Theirs not to make reply,    Theirs not to reason why,    Theirs but to do and die.    Into the valley of Death    Rode the six hundred.
The poem itself describes a brave but misguided action during the Battle of Balaclava where about 670 cavalry riders charged the wrong Russian artillery battery on the field, and were summarily decimated.
So while the orders on the day were misinterpreted, and there was tragedy, its also looked upon as the tragedy of blindly following orders. Because that's the thing - good soldiers follow orders (and Aziraphale doesn't.)
Over time, the lines have been misquoted as "Ours is not to reason why, ours is but to do and die" and interpreted as not to question the will of the Almighty and just to accept what comes your way. But the quote has nothing to do with the Bible.
So I'm wondering, seeing as there seems to be a bit of emphasis on following orders and bringing an expected outcome about, is this a hint that orders may been misinterpreted somewhere, and everyone is charging towards the wrong target?
It also adds to all the horse symbolism we keep seeing, in both seasons.

Kieran Culkin on the "Variety Awards Circuit" podcast 27th April 2023:
Host: Also, I have to ask you [about] Tom and Greg, man.
Kieran: (laughing)
Host: I mean, it’s Jack and Ennis [the two lead characters in Brokeback Mountain]. It’s the most beautiful thing. It’s the most beautiful love story on television. (laughing)
Kieran: It’s pretty great, yeah.
Host: It’s great. And I know you auditioned– or wanted, or read for Cousin Greg?
Kieran: No, they sent it to me to read for Greg, and I knew that I wasn’t.
Host: You knew.
Kieran: I knew right– before even reading the first line of dialogue that said, "Greg, 26" and I think I was like 36 or something like that, and I was like, okay, well the age is wrong.
Host: You have aged remarkably though, by the way.
Kieran: Why thank you. [Explains about how he ended up asking to read for Roman instead; the rest is history]
Kieran: But [back to] Tom and Greg, it worked out well. Tom and Greg, while we shot the pilot, you know, the way that Adam McKay is very like, fluid with the cameras and sort of– it’s very alive. We’re at the softball game, and he yells out to the cameras like, "go to Tom and Greg!" and very far long lenses, cameras turn, and they know to do a scene that they hadn’t rehearsed yet, which was the, "Will you kiss me?" (pauses) That thing at the very beginning that was like, "Will you kiss me, Greg?" They hadn’t rehearsed it. They hadn’t blocked it, they just started doing it, because it was like, I guess there’s still more film left, go, do that part! And I watched that from the other side of the field, and went; Oh, this thing. These two guys is– this is the show.
Host: Oh my god, that’s awesome.

your work inspires me. It is clearly Your Style. I want to find my own style. Sometimes I feel like I can't create bc I haven't done it in a while, because I don't have enough time, because xy and z. But I don't have to do something big. I can make something small and personal. And eventually I will find my style 💖
Hey!
Just wanted to say I loved this so much. I think for anyone doing art no matter if you're doing it for fun or for work (or for fun but you want it to be your work), 'finding your style' is such a thing, and you just totally nail it.
It's super hard to get back into creative things when you've had a long or even a little of a break. I know I have a really hard time just working on sketches and watercolor for myself because my brain is always like 'you should be using this time to do your pottery, wat r u doing,' but its important! And even doing 5 freaking minutes a day of some little tiny art thing, is good and nice and paves the way for you to make it a little more and a little more if you keep doing it.
Anyway op, thanks for this in my inbox, I hope in the giant chasm of time since you put it there and I've answered it that you've gotten to work on some stuff, and if not, hey that's fine too, I know you'll get to it <3
Everyone has their style(s) and as you work, you'll uncover yours!

I was going to post this when the second half of this was closer to being completed, but I've been busy elsewhere, and haven't had time, and I wanted to share this.

Another thing that fascinates me about Jason and Bruce is the way Jay can't get over having learned that there is a line Bruce wouldn't cross for him. How he can't get over the fact that love isn't childishly perfect and pure. Jason's way of understanding and demanding love is so painfully, desperately naive, that it will always tug at my heartstrings, because don't we all just want to be loved completely?
Learning your parents, your mother or father or both, will not actually love you to the point of self-sacrifice is painful. It's not like you have the right to demand it from anyone else. And most people will take this lesson and learn that love is not what they thought it was. Will learn that love is imperfect. That love can sometimes hurt more. That love is in the end just a feeling. And no guarantee of safety or care or anything.
But Jason refuses to think that Bruce can love him at all if he isn't willing to commit the act of avenging him by killing his murderer too. Isn't that question desperately familiar? How can you love me, if you won't even do this for me? How can you still say you love me?
It's about having gone through the pain of that question yourself, before you realized that you can be loved and hurt every single second of it.
And then there's hope. The hope that yields to placing the gun in your fathers hand. And bearing yourself. And what could it have been other than a futile hope to be wrong, that led to the confrontation between the Joker, Jason and Bruce? I think somewhere there was a last effort internally in Jason to provide an excuse to himself. Trying to convince himself that it will still count if Bruce lets Jason be the one to pull the trigger. Like this can still count. This will still be love.
But then he's laying on the floor, bleeding out, and I think what died there was the last spark of hope that love is magical. After that you know, love can mean something to you, but it carries no meaning in itself. And the world becomes a little bit more gray.
It's a childish way to love, in that we all wish, somewhere deep down, that we could return to loving and being loved in this way.

I went looking and couldn't find any record of me ever actually posting this on tumblr, oops, but a couple years back I wrote this thread on twitter about how Emmeryn's sacrifice absolutely is not supposed to teach Chrom (or Robin, for that matter) that "sacrifice is necessary" or anything like that and mmmm for reasons I am getting Upset about it again so asdfghjkl I'll actually share the Rant with my tumblr followers this time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
#i'm sorry i'm sorry it's just then whenever i see anyone say that chrom didn't “learn his lesson” about sacrifice from emmeryn i freak out#it's such a common take too??? well okay idk if it's “common” or if i just keep running into a niche take but either way i've seen it a lot#i could also get into (i think i have before at some point) that when robin says “what is one life when weighed against millions?” it's...#it's actually a misquote of emmeryn's “you each have but one life and i do not wish it weighed against mine.”#and despite sounding similar it actually has a directly opposite meaning#emmeryn's saying her life is not more important than anyone else's but robin's saying that their life is less important than everyone else'#also robin does NOT in fact believe in sacrificing for the greater good. look at their supports with virion. and walhart too actually#when chrom tells aversa that one person's life means nothing in the shadow of millions he's basically parroting robin#except neither he nor robin believe that. that's what they say when they feel powerless. like when emmeryn was on that cliff#(also the game literally does call out the hypocrisy? aversa points out he didn't feel that way when his sister was on the line...#like... you're supposed to notice...)#anyway sorry for vagueblogging but do note that i've had this take for 2 years (and well... longer but it took me a while to write it out)#and dang it i have a certain blog BLOCKED but sometimes i go to my mutuals blogs directly and for some reason tumblr still shows me reblogs#anyway normally i would keep my mouth shut it's just that i already had this one ready to go from 2 years ago asdfghjkl
