It's morning. Gardevoir doesn't really enjoy mornings. Gardevoir doesn't seem to enjoy a lot, really.

Gardevoir decides to go out for a walk. She doesn't even really 'enjoy' walks, she just needed the alone time. As she paces through the nearby forest Gardevoir finds herself starting to wake up more, in a rather decent mood too. Around then, a rather distracting rustling noise comes in. It's fairly loud, it's very annoying. It's TOO annoying.

Gardevoir just nonchalantly throws a Shadow Ball at the rustling, whatever was making the rustling was directly hit, "Shut the fuck UP." Gardevoir begins, before the creature causing the disturbance loudly exclaims "OWWAAH!" Gardevoir hadn't fully waken up so the pained cry startled her a bit. Whatever empath was left over in the scraggly Gardevoir took over for a second as she went to check up on whatever she just nailed. Gardevoir pushes the bush leaves back to reveal a Butterfree writhing in pain on the ground nex to a half-eaten Oran berry. "Oh. Hello." Gardevoir awkwardly stares at the poor thing, knowing that she was absolutely to blame. The Butterfree was just eating and she knocked it's lights out cuz it disturbed her 'Brooding Wake Up' walk.

Gardevoir rather hesitantly starts to inch away from the Butterfree before bolting it back to the house. So far her day hasn't gone that well. Gardevoir, oddly politely, knocks on her trainer Sandra's door. It's barely bright out as morning has only barely arrived, so there was no guarantee there would be an answer, but lo and behold Sandra comes out, messy hair, drooped face, wearing her all-black pajamas. "What. On Earth. Could've POSSIBLY made you come wake me up?" Sandra moodily asks, Gardevoir rather embarrassingly replies "uh.. s-So I was doing my morning walk, right? And the strangest thing happens, this Butterfree comes up on me out of NOWHERE," She's clearly bullshitting, and Sandra sees right through her like glass, "s-so uh.. I kinda tossed a Shadow Ball at it, and now it's just kinda… suffering in the forest over there." Sandra gives her the most obvious disappointed face she possibly could. "Okay, whatever, I'm sure the VISCOUS and BLOODTHIRSTY Butterfree got what was coming to it…" Sandra starts to close the door about to attempt to go back to sleep, before her senses finally also wake up, "Wait, wait, you just left it there?" "uh" "… okay. Go wake Shroud up, let's go see."

Sandra and her little team of two make their way out to the forest to where Gardevoir ruined the Butterfree's morning, to find it STILL wincing and writhing in pain. "Damn, I thought I was getting rusty." Gardevoir remarks. Shroud goes up to the Butterfree and gives it a Sitrus to gnaw on while Sandra goes to comfort it. "Did the Jolly Green Giant getcha?" It nods as it takes a comically large bite off the berry "Yeah, well.. Let's go get you all fixed up." Sandra gently lifts the Butterfree off the ground and starts to bring her back to the house.

i’ve been thinking abt mismagius/maggie a lot lately, to some extent i disagree with some other critics calling her “the most sympathetic character in the comic” bc a lot of her remarks do constitute sexual harassment (though the narrative doesn’t bring up that actually-valid point and just frames it as maggie making obnoxious jokes about a sensitive topic for g).

that being said, i do still feel bad for maggie as a character. aside from the fact that comic!lily very obviously favors g over her and always takes g’s side of the conflict, she’s just shown being miserable/caught in a conflict with the other characters in almost every comic she appears in (whenever she’s not pestering people). outside of an early comic about comic!lily affectionately scratching the “ears” on her hat, i can’t recall a single time comic!lily was actually shown being genuinely nice to her.

(i also wanna say: thank you for listening to my rambles abt madhouse’s characters, it’s a weirdly fascinating topic to me)

I honestly feel bad for Maggie, not because she's in the right, but because c! Lily threatens to put her in the pokeball for five years and apparently that's like solitary confinement in the universe of madhouse and putting a sentient being through solitary confinement for 5 years probably constitutes a break in the Geneva convention and that's messed up.

(sorry for sending so many asks about poke-madhouse, it’s just a story that aggravates me as a pokemon nerd on top of all the objectionable content in it)

maggie is established the have a crush on comic!mikaila (and a reblog of that comic from lily herself showing a screencap of her discord server confirmed that it is a sexual attraction, she “jokingly” roleplays maggie lamenting comic!mikaila’s habit of walking around the house naked which is. gross and weird, to say the least). she accidentally admitted that crush to g and comic!lily. one of mismagius’ pokedex entries mention it being able to bewitch people to fall in love, and the rest of its entries talk about how it can alter people’s emotions with its chants.

and they just choose not to tell comic!mikaila about this in favor of watching maggie flounder for some reason? considering mismagius as a species can at least manipulate people’s emotions, this should be something that comic!lily either talks maggie down from, or something she warns comic!mikaila about. then again, maybe this loops back around to lily accidentally writing maggie as more sympathetic than g: because as far as we know, maggie never acted on this crush or made any advances on comic!mikaila (and thank god for that).

That oddly does make Maggie superior to G.

if you’re okay sharing, any info about shroud? i’m always happy to see justice for mismagius in anything madhouse-inspired

I'll be honest, a lot of the original ref sheet lore on Shroud is outdated and was kinda just rushed out so i HAD something lmao. there's some stuff i know for sure though:

-in Sandra's room in the cottage, Shroud has a little corner where she keeps all her cool stuff. about 30% of it is memorabilia with Sandra and Gardevoir. -Shroud has a bit of a habit when she gets nervous where she tries to isolate herself from other people. -She may have been Sandra's second ever pokemon while she was a trainer, but Shroud is far from a fighter. She much more enjoys her quiet time.

Poke madhouse in a nutshell: Vice

There’s an entirely huge cast in Poke Madhouse. and none of them have any character or noteworthy traits  

None of the pokemon exist. The last pokemon to ever say anything on screen other than G was Mismagius. the story is remarkably bereft of pokemon for the bulk of the story and as I said much earlier in the essay it creates a really weird effect where you could replace G with another human or an alien and it would change very little of the story. 

In fact the story actually went out of it’s way to make the few stand out pokemon that weren’t G less interesting. 

There was Mismagius, an antagonist/rival/something of Gardevoir who made it her business to annoy G at every turn, and now she’s gone. we haven’t seen her since the Honesty arc where the last thing she did was tell G to maybe don’t go and do the thing thats gonna break your heart because you know thats all your gonna do.

Then there was butterfee who was surprisingly the one other pokemon that G had any real interest in the companionship. This could have been the start of a very interesting and unique set up where G in spite of being in love with C!Lily could make strides to attempt to have a relationship with someone else. but then an audience member reached out to Lily the writer and said that the way the character had been written as “child coded” had made the prospect of a romance between G and Butterfree feel creepy. So rather than adjust the way she wrote Butterfree and making it obvious that while the character was a bit simple and naive, was not a child, lily completely axed that plot idea entirely and committed in totality to the concept of G being utterly miserable when it came to any kind of relaitonship that wasn’t with C!lily. 

C!Lily is...a self insert. but also a mary sue because inspite of Lily the writer having told the audience through tumblr posts that C!Lily has all sorts of problems like anxiety, trauma from abuse, and all sorts of flaws the story itself presents none of those. and infact in a later post one of the things Lily said C!Lily’s biggest flaw was...”she cares too much” which should always be taken as shorthand for “I couldn’t think of a flaw to give this character so I’m making a positive trait into her one negative trait in an attempt to make it look like I tried” 

C!Mikaila....doesn’t have character, we actually were supposed to have a whole story arc called “Vacation”  centered on her and the pokemon and then Lily just...didn’t do that and proceeded to give us a single three panel page amongst the 9 page arc. this single page was dedicated to C!Mikaila and three pokemon.

And then, just to add to this, one can only imagine what one might think if you discovered your girlfriend and eventual fiance had a thing with her pokemon that can only be described as “complicated” at best and “bordering on making me ask if I’m the third wheel here” at worst.” You’d imagine that C!Mikaila might have a really interesting bundle of opinions and feelings on having to bare witness to this so frequently. But she doesn’t.  I wish I were lying here, C!Mikaila ought to have a lot of feelings in regards to the fact that she’s basically playing second fiddle to G at every turn, but the most the writer can think to put in for her girlfriend’s opinion is a “I try to keep out of it because their relationship is complicated and both of them have baggage” non-opinion.

C!Ginger doesn’t exist in he comic outside of like...3 pages. oh wait. just two because the third page blinked out of existence for...reasons. in spite of the fact she has the most interesting seeds for a story she doesn’t get any presence in the story. She makes no contributions to the movement of the plot. We only know she is a gym leader, and that is it. 

The story recently introduced Mara. A second Gardevoir for G to finally have an attempt at a relationship with...and...she sings. and speaks english, which hilariously run incongruous to statements about how pokemon can’t consent to being in relaitonships, or communicate their needs or be able to attend therapy. 

but personality wise Mara is an ambiguous beacon of desirable goodness. And not much else. 

And then we get to Bonnie. She’s probably one of the only things Lily hasn’t goofed up as a writer, but thats...damning with faint praise. Cute child is something most people are able to write, and even then she’s being written as the most “ideal” child. there are no tantrums, no anger, no negative traits or things that gives the parent a head ache. 

Also bonnie can casually warp reality to a degree as permitted by the rule of funny. 

These are characters in the most basic sense.

“Wait weren’t you just snapping at me a couple of minutes ago?”

“So why are you suddenly so…”

“Nice?”

“Y-yeah..”

“Well, it’s simple: my anger was directed at the wrong Pokémon.”

“But… how can you even trust me after I-”

“Magi hurt my trainer. You weren’t even there. Physically you were, but mentally and spiritually: you weren’t.”

“Not to mention your scent changed, so I trust you.”

Hi. I’m Gobbo or Bri (pick ya poison), I’m a current student at Savannah College of Art and Design (as for campus I ain’t saying nothing) Im working on my bachelors in Animation and minoring in Creative Writing. My Concentration starting as 2d animation later switching it to Story and Concept in animation (back in 2021). I started in 2019 and it’s… 2024 now. Don’t judge me! I’ve been mentored by comic artist, storyboarders and many more in the industry! I’ve taken storyboarding and a plethora of writing classes to have enough qualifications under my belt to properly discuss the shit writing, lacking worldbuilding, disorganized plot hole ridden lore/arcs and horrible inconsistent art. So let’s not waste another moment and dive fucking in!

Story:

I’m not using Lily’s self review tvtropes to cover this. It’s disingenuous ego stroking at full blast.

We follow the highs and lows that are the “will they won’t they” relationship between the stated as sisters, Lily and her Gardevoir, G (yes that’s her fucking name). In a Sunday newspaper comic page esc structure. With bits and pieces of trivia and lore that rarely comes up if not to push and pull sympathy points for lilys self insert as she gets assaulted and violated in physical and mental ways. An arc being called “Violate” and later following the would be time span for gestation of a baby that would then become the labeled cryptid child.

I’m gonna be real there’s no point in reading it because the moment something big happens out of the blue there wasn’t a page missing to explain it which god fucking dammit Lily do I need to give you one of those brainframe sheets or outline templates if you decide to write a story? Because I’ll gladly provide them!

How do you consider yourself a fucking writer at all with your fundamental lack of care for lore and story like- for fucks sake woman it won’t kill you!

You have all these characters and you neglect so many of them to focus on making your favorite Dollies kiss and scissor or do nothing!

You don’t punish actual rapists either like legit what do you do when your Pokémon who’s been raised like a sister your whole life admits to mindfucking you in a weird soul bond type deal (that you wrote the explanation of yourself), then out of fear swaps dna of a Pokémon of her CRITICALLY ENDANGERED SPECIES can match with to save it with your own dna to baby lock you to staying together, what’s the thing you decide to write?

Case in point: stick an entire cactus up your urethra Lily.

I need a break from this… I’m moving on to the art misdirection.

Lily you are the one commissioning these panels from Mikayla. Meaning you are telling her how to draw these making you the literal art director of this shitty comic!

if i’m reading the latest comic right; i really like the idea to make mismagius into more of a villain in this rewrite! a problem i always had with the original madhouse is that g was so awful that i never found myself rooting for her, so mismagius never really felt like a real antagonist.

so reworking it to make g more sympathetic and mismagius more evil is really refreshing (and i like the reference to mismagius having a type advantage by having her possess/mind control g)

Thanks anon! Yeah it’s something I think would make more sense given the typing of the Pokémon!

This was probably not your intention, but I'll ramble about possible ideas for lacey for a bit 😅

Her design reminds me so much of a detective!! She could have her own little office and solve the more low stake cases you expect in the pokemon universe and maybe through those cases stumble into a bigger case a la team rocket!

And if we stay in the poke madhouse universe maybe she tries to go after syir? In true detective noir fashion she could get together with diantha, maybe they have to go on an exciting escape together from syir! Or if we play by lily's rules lacey could get in over her head and team up with her and g (boo!) But this breaks the slice of life setting I guess ¯\_( ツ )_/¯

According to the wiki, Lacey did date Diantha, so that team up is totally possible!

Plus, a detective plot would be fascinating. It's not something you typically get in Pokémon, and with how messed up Madhouse is in terms of its world, you could go to some really fascinating places with this concept.

This could be such a fun Film Noir style story. That is definitely a great angle to take it, and for extra flavour, we could have Mismagius be the secretary. (I don't know why, but that just seems funny to me.)

Well we've picked Mismagius and Lacey from madhouse to give them a better treatment. Since Lily isn't doing plus-sized characters anymore we should get Marah out of there too. She deserves a better story (also now that I think about it C!MO had a really mild reaction to hearing that the reason Marah was at the house is because C!MO's own Dad was making passes at her. I'm guessing it was just supposed to be a joke that's never explained and LO added that detail later. Still though yikes.)

I'm more hesitant to take Marah, because that character was Mikaila's creation.

Stealing Lacey is fine, since that character was just created out of spite and then promptly forgotten. But Mikaila doesn't get a lot of their own creations getting used in Lily's work, so taking Marah doesn't sit right with me.

since we have permission to redo story/characters, I wanna make a version of Poke Madhouse but for real!! a mischievous Mismagius being the sympathetic protagonist is great! I'd make the Pokemon be unable to talk English just so I'd have to work around a language barrier as well. Trying to save her trainer (Mikaila/Melody) from a deranged Gardevoir when she can't speak words. I want to make it genuine horror. Not hopeless tho, I ofc want it to end positively for Maggie in some way!

Oooh, that sounds like a lot of fun!

I will admit this is a bit nitpicky, but in the Poke Madhouse comic I just don't like how both Lily and Mikaila are portrayed. By that I mean, I don't like how Lily is the only one who is seen as desirable. I know Lily and her pokemon are the focus of the comic - that they are heroes of it - and therefore they should be depicted in a more positive light. But when you have Mikaila, the main love interest (or should be), who is constantly written off as a joke or a dork. Someone who is not on the same level of admiration and respect as Lily. It just rubs me the wrong way. That C!Lily is the one everyone wants and C!Mikaila is just sort of here, someone unworthy of consideration or adoration.

Even when you concider the latest comic, both Lily and G automaticly assume that Mismagius would have a crush on one of them. Nobody else comes to mind.

That seems like such a silly think to get hung up on, especially in a comedy series, but it just kind of bothered me. Especially concidering everything in relation to what you just said.

I recently build my dream team in Pokemon for an illustration i had planned and i realized like halfway through that Mismagius and Gardevoir are on there... Because yes they are some of my all time favorite pokemon... And it made me realize that i think that's why I'm constantly so disappointed by madhouse. Because they are amazing pokemon and that story does either nothing or does them dirty...

Honestly, replace Gardevoir with an Alien, and what changes?

Nothing.

I think that's what makes it a failure more then anything else. It's a pokemon comic where pokemon are irrelevant, and that hurts it terribly.
