It’s really kinda sad painful and interesting that the Captain’s death is one of the few where we don’t see him become a ghost. We almost expect it but the final shot of that scene is just him laying lifeless on the floor (and I suppose there there’s some mirroring between his and Kitty’s death, especially through the cinematography). How horrific must that have been when he did become a ghost? To be able to see Havers and trying to reach out to him, trying to get through to him only for Havers to never know he was still there, alone. Having to listen to all the nasty comments made by the other officers. To watch Havers leave the house for a second time, unable to get his attention or say goodbye.

This might be because I been looking into horror games such as Soma but I been thinking about @raygirlramblings theory regarding a possible Dolph clone in season two (cannot find the post atm) and I got to ask:

the fact that all the extra casting calls have fitting dates starting on the 5th, oh we're so close. filming could either start right after new years on the 5th or the week after. not later than the 16th because that's already an announced filming date on the extra listing. and the first day of filming is when they release the table read videos/teasers to hype production up

table read content in about a week and the table placement has always aligned with in season groupings so that'll be interesting to see. probably the first real clue we'll get to which people will have the most to do with each other in the season

Writing this one down before I forget why I put this in my drafts again: as anyone who follows me at this point knows, I am accordingly obsessed with rune placement for this goddamn cube. Now, it’s not always meaningful (and some of the ways it could be in certain scenes, we just don’t know yet because it hasn’t swung back around either way). However, I always thought the Sky rune here specifically was interesting.

The Sky rune has had some attention drawn to it previously (is indeed the first rune we ever see illuminated in the cube at the end of 1x04, Callum stares at it sadly in 2x01 because no magic, it glows when he’s connecting to the arcanum in 2x09, etc) and we know its placement on the cube in general is important, as Sky and Star are opposites on the cube, just as Callum and Aaravos are narratively and thematically opposed to each other. S4 hammers this in even further. Freedom vs a pre-determined destiny. Free will vs control and brainwashing. Breaking the cycle vs perpetuating the cycle. 

And here, we see some conflicting symbolism. Callum starts off looking at the Earth rune because well, we learn (or have quite a bit confirmed) about Aaravos in Book Four. It seems to be a rune-season symbolic placement, which is similar to when the Earth and Ocean rune (with Star) are on display earlier in this episode quite prominently, and how Earth and Ocean are highlighted when Callum learns in 2x06 that this is called the Key of Aaravos and (according to Harrow) once belonged to the archmage, too. 

So Earth is there because seasons and Rex Igneous knowing the location of the prison. Sky cannot correspond to a season in the same way, as it’s already passed. Perhaps it’s there because that was when the secret of Aaravos started to unfold, and that’s the big Mystery of well, the Mystery of Aaravos. (Maybe foreshadowing Callum learning how Aaravos can use all the different magics, even, since we know arcana are like “the secret of the primal” according to Lujanne.)

But Sky isn’t particularly associated with mysteries; that’s always been more Moon or Star leaning. If Callum was looking primarily at the Star arcanum in this scene, I wouldn’t be surprised at all. But despite this whole scene being about Aaravos, Callum never looks at the Star rune once. He looks at Earth and Sky. And Sky, and Callum by extension, are heavily associated with Freedom. “You are free” (2x08) / “My breath for freedom” (1x01). Which is the thing that Aaravos wants more than anything. 

Me, dragging out my whiteboard for “Put another talley in the column for ‘Callum helps free Aaravos inadvertently or through coercion’ theory” because this is... just More of the same in regards to how Freedom is being tethered to the bulk of the main cast (Callum, Rayla, Claudia, and Aaravos) going into S5.
