Chapter 5: Trinkets

Angelo Riva woke up to the feeling of his little sister weakly pushing him with all her three-year-old might. “You gonna go to school,” she said.

Angelo’s blood ran cold while he frantically scrambled for his phone to see the time. When he saw that it was 10 AM, he almost passed away. But when he saw that it was Saturday, he was relieved. “It’s Saturday. I don’t need to go to school today,” he told the three-year-old. “Who told you I had to go to school?”

“Santo,” Mirella replied.

“Oh, he said that to you?” Angelo asked. Mirella nodded. “OK. I’m gonna talk to Santo. You just stay here, got it?”

“OK,” Mirella said.

“You’re a good girl, Mirella,” Angelo said, messing with her hair and leaving her in his room. The soft tone in his voice faded when talking to his older brother. “Santo, what the hell?”

“Watch your language, Mirella might copy you,” Santo taunted. The duvet he’d wrapped himself in looked comfortable, so Angelo took it. “Hey!”

“Why do you keep telling Mirella to wake me up for school when it’s Saturday?” Angelo said.

“Because it’s adorable to watch her try and it’s funny to watch you freak out,” Santo replied. “Simple. Now give me my duvet back.”

Angelo pretended to think about it. “No.”

“Fine. I’ll just take you and the duvet.” Santo pulled on the duvet, sending his little brother flying forwards. The duvet Angelo was holding onto now became the material that swaddled him. “So, how do I correct this attitude before it gets worse? What should I do with you?” He spied convenient pockets in the way he’d wrapped the duvet around his brother and grinned. “Oh, I think I know now.”

Angelo raised an eyebrow. “Am I gonna get beaten up now or something?”

“Oh, you wish,” Santo grinned, as he plunged his hands into the pockets and prodded at his brother's ribcage, playing him like a piano.

“HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!” Angelo howled. “NOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHO! PLEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEASE MAHAHAHAHAHAKE IT STOHOHOHOHOHOP!”

“Depends. Are you gonna be really nice to your big brother?” Santo punctuated each word by squeezing Angelo's sides. Angelo's squeaks and squeals alerted Mirella, who rushed in and saw Santo sitting on her big brother.

“Leave big brother alone!” she yelled, punching Santo. It wasn’t a very hard punch, considering that she was three.

“Ow,” Santo groaned. “And what do you mean by big brother? I’m your big brother too, remember?” Santo groaned.

“Angie is my big brother! You leave him alone! He’s tired!” Mirella yelled.

“Mimi, Santo is your big brother too,” Angelo explained.

“No, he's not.”

“Yes, he is,” Angelo told her.

“No, he's not.”

“Yes, he is.”

“What is this?” Angelo’s mother asked, looking into Santo’s room and seeing all three of her kids. “Why are you all in Santo's room?”

“Santo mean to Angie!” Mirella yelled.

“Santo, be nice to your little brother. And all of you go downstairs for breakfast,” their mother ordered, leaving the room. Angelo began the process of extracting himself from the duvet, grumbling all the while.

“Santo is such a pain,” he grumbled. Halfway through the extraction process of removing himself from the treacherous duvet, Mirella hugged him.

“I protect big brother from Santo,” she said.

Angelo smiled and picked her up. “Yes, you did. You’re the best baby sister.”

(PAUSE)

Angelo prepared himself and Mirella two bowls of chocolatey cereal while the whirring of the blender confirmed the making of Santo’s protein shake. “I regret buying you that stuff,” their mother sighed.

“I’m just glad you remembered breakfast,” their dad said, reading a book on the couch. “And it’s better they eat it instead of wasting it, I guess.”

“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and they are starting off their day with junk!”

“We can hear you, Mama,” Angelo said, draining the milk out of the bowl. “And it’s not even a school day.”

“With that blender, I’m surprised that you can hear anything,” their dad mused as Santo turned it off and poured his beige protein shake into a cup.

“Is it supposed to look like that?” Angelo asked, tilting his head with confusion.

“I said that about you when you were born,” Santo taunted.

“SANTO!” their parents chorused.

“I’m kidding, I promise. Angelo knows I’m kidding.” He crouched down to look at his little brother. “Right, Angelo?”

“I’d like some space, please.” Angelo got up and went up to his room. “We’ll talk when I get back.”

“Angie!” Mirella whimpered. Angelo smiled, turning around to stroke her hair.

“I’ll be back in a few hours, OK, principessa?" he soothed, before going up to his room. He needed his space and his board.

(PAUSE)

The best thing about skateboarding, according to Angelo Riva, was how he felt at peace with air rushing past him and no floor underneath. He felt like he was flying as he performed flips and turns. And even when he was resting with his board at his side, he could watch the other skaters and smile. He was practicing a spin when two young men came up to him. They looked to be around twenty. “Who are you, little guy?” the one in front asked, a toned and shirtless guy with a silver dog tag necklace around his neck.

Angelo looked up at the large boy, gulping nervously. “Angelo,” he said. “What do you want? Did I do something wrong?”

“No, little guy, you’re awesome!” he said, the other agreeing. “How many tricks do you know?”

“Only a few,” Angelo admitted. “The basics. Ollie, sliding, stuff like that. I try to learn more, but my parents don’t like when I stay out too long.”

“What trick are you trying to learn, little guy?” the other guy said, a slightly shorter guy who had a shirt.

“360 spin,” Angelo admitted. “But I keep failing at it.”

“Oh, that's OK,” Dog Tag said. “You have to suck at something to get good at it. Now, how about you demonstrate and we see where you’re going wrong?” Angelo nodded and got onto his board, skating towards the ramp and trying to turn all the way. He fell hard. The two older skaters came running. “You OK, little dude?”

“I’ve had worse,” Angelo grunted, getting up and dusting himself off. “I have knee pads underneath this, so no bleeding.”

“Good. Now, you’re trying the spin too early and it throws your balance off,” Shirt Dude said. “How about you try again? And once you figure this out, we’ll show you a few more tricks.”

Angelo agreed immediately. “Cool.”

(PAUSE)

Angelo got ambushed by Mirella the moment he came home. “Big brother!” she squealed, hugging his legs. Angelo smiled and picked her up.

“What’s the problem, honey?” Angelo asked.

“Want big brother,” Mirella whined.

Angelo laughed and spun her around, listening to her squeals and giggles. “All right. Is there anything else you want?”

“My Little Pony!” Angelo steered her to the TV and turned the channel from the news to magical unicorns. Once the theme song was blaring and Mirella was engrossed in the TV, Angelo snuck away to the basement.

The basement was Angelo's favourite part of the house, second to his actual bedroom. Unlike his bedroom, the basement has a key that he could lock from the inside or outside, meaning that he could keep other people out when he had to. He could also take part in his favourite hobbies: inventing new things and collecting interesting trinkets. He kept his trinkets in a large plastic bin that he occasionally took out and looked at. His trinkets included, but were not limited to:

A small silver skull charm that looked like it had fallen off a gothic charm bracelet.

A unicorn hat that Mirella had put on his head to make him the unicorn princess.

His old Willy Wonka costume that he went trick-or-treating with when he was eleven before he got the growth spurt that transformed him from a scrawny kid to a big dude. He had the purple Gene Wilder version, although he did like the goggles on the hat that Johnny Depp's version had.

His old roller-skates that he grew out in terms of both size and the hobby itself.

The toy toolkit that he got for his fifth birthday.

He’d collected these things for ages, things that meant a lot to him. His inventions ended up on shelves, but he put his trinkets in the box on the floor, for the sake of easier access.

“Angelo, time for dinner! We got pizza!” their mother called. Angelo stopped reminiscing about the past and dutifully went upstairs.

A hand clamped over his mouth.

“I knew you'd come if you thought there was food,” Santo said triumphantly, holding up the audio recording device on his phone.

“A recording of our mother’s voice? Seriously?” Angelo asked.

“Hey, it worked,” Santo said. “Anyway, I need to make sure that Mum and Dad know that there’s nothing bad between us.”

“But there is none.”

Santo studied his little brother’s face. “Really? Are you serious?”

“Of course I’m serious. I have to be; I’m a terrible liar.” Angelo smiled awkwardly up at his brother. Santo wasn't buying it.

“Nah, I should probably make sure, just in case.” Angelo was dragged into Santo's bedroom and subjected to tickles. “Poor little inventor. Nobody’s going to help you. Dad’s asleep, and Mum is shopping.” He went to squeeze his brother’s knees to make the inventor go weak with laughter, and he found a strange hardness. “Are you still wearing your knee pads?”

“Oh, I forgot I had those on," Angelo said, removing them with ease as his older brother looked at him with horror.

“HOW?!”

“I think it’s somewhere between muscle memory and obliviousness.”

“For you, it's definitely obliviousness." Santo took the time to grab his knee and squeeze cruelly, listening to his brother squeal and attempt to squirm away.

“Please don’t do this when my friends come over,” Angelo begged, through his giggles. Santo paused.

“Friends?”

Angelo gave his brother a weird look. “Yes. When Mum and Dad come back, I’ll ask them if my friends can come over to study.”

“Of course you’re all studying.” Santo rolled his eyes.

“Normally, we’d do this in school, but we keep getting hounded by this school prefect.”

“Oh, really? Who’s this prefect person?” Santo sat and nodded in all the right places as Angelo explained who Melanie Sainsbury was, the times that she’d burst into their meetings to catch them doing something wrong, and the accusations she'd levelled against them. “She sounds like a nasty piece of work.”

“She is. Something about us makes her angry, and I don’t know what.”

“I bet Mum and Dad will totally say yes,” Santo replied.

“I’ll ask them,” Angelo said, pulling out his phone.

Angelo: Can a few of my friends come over on Wednesday afternoon?

Dad: You never told me you had friends.

A: I made friends at school. They're called Dante, Layla and Yujin, and we need a place to study that is away from school.

D: Sure, so long as their parents know and give permission for them to be there.

A: Thank you.

“He said yes,” Angelo told Santo.

“Never doubted him for a second,” Santo muttered. “Now, where were we?”

And the torturous tickles began again.

O perfume citado na música é uma metáfora à própria presença de Deus, que cria na nossa mente o costume de sentir Seu cheiro e agir conforme o caráter dEle – esmiúça Silas, que assina a produção da faixa.

Viajei para a Bahia assim que a música ficou pronta para gravar com minha equipe na minha cidade natal em Santo Antônio de Jesus. Gravamos no estúdio de vídeo que montamos dentro da Igreja da Família, que é minha igreja local lá na Bahia. O trampo ficou incrível, muito bem feito e projetado. Está de fato cinematográfico – pontua.

“Seu Perfume” é o primeiro lançamento de Silas Magalhães pelo seu próprio selo. Com a experiência adquirida com suas passagens pela Universal Music e pela Sony Music, ele apresenta o Prayer Hands que não vai se limitar apenas à carreira do trapper, mas também visando novos talentos da urban music.

– O selo nasceu com a proposta de lançar artistas e músicas de alta qualidade, dando liberdade para os mesmos terem sua identidade e serem livres durante todo o processo de criação. O nome veio em referência a como tudo na minha vida foi gerado: através da oração. Gosto muito de orar na janela da minha casa e tenho a mania de gesticular muito com as mãos durante a oração, então daí veio o “Prayer Hands” ou “Mãos de Oração”. A Symphonic é uma empresa alinhada com o propósito do selo. O modelo de negócio deles e a forma que eles tratam os artistas são muito atuais e diferente de algumas empresas muito engessadas – afirma Silas.

O selo está em negociação com dois artistas e, de acordo com Silas Magalhães, ele pretende “fazer um trabalho robusto e completo desde o conceito até o lançamento”. 

– O foco não vai ser a quantidade de artistas e nem de lançamentos, mas sim a qualidade, leve o tempo que for preciso – avalia.

Primeira-dama acompanha plantio de árvore de ação municipal na Cidade Edson

Como parte do projeto ‘Nasce uma Criança, Plante uma Árvore’, do vereador Márcio Malt, Larissa Ashiuchi prestigiou homenagem à recém-nascida Mirella A gestora do Viveiro Municipal Tomoe Uemura, a primeira-dama Larissa Ashiuchi, esteve na praça São Paulo, no bairro Cidade Edson, para acompanhar o plantio da segunda árvore do projeto “Nasce uma Criança, Plante uma Árvore”, na manhã desta terça-feira (23/05). A homenageada em questão foi a bebê Mirella Luiza Gonçalves da Silva Sanchez, de dois meses de idade. Acompanhada do idealizador do projeto, o vereador Márcio Alexandre de Souza, o Márcio Malt, Larissa recebeu a família, representada pelo pai Angelo Beserra da Silva, de 23 anos, e pela mãe Caroline Regina Gonçalves dos Santos, de 26, para realizar o plantio de um exemplar de manacá da serra nas imediações da Paróquia Bom Pastor, localizada no centro da praça. O momento também foi marcado pela entrega do certificado “Criança Amiga da Natureza”, em reconhecimento pelo ato. Mirella nasceu na manhã do dia 4 de março e, desde então, alegra a vida do jovem casal. Segundo eles, realizar o plantio na praça em questão foi um desejo para que eles e a filha sempre pudessem ver a homenagem. "É maravilhoso ter a oportunidade de homenagear a nossa filha com uma árvore e também ensinar aos outros a importância de cuidar da natureza. Agradecemos a prefeitura por essa chance", disse Caroline. De acordo com Márcio Malt, a iniciativa representa a importância do estímulo à preservação ambiental desde a infância. “Essa é uma cultura que queremos fomentar, mostrando a responsabilidade da preservação e o incentivo à educação ambiental. Em nome da primeira-dama Larissa Ashiuchi, agradeço a parceria da Prefeitura de Suzano para a viabilização da iniciativa no município”, destacou o vereador. A primeira-dama explica que para participar do projeto, é preciso que haja o requerimento da muda junto ao Viveiro Municipal em até 90 dias após a data de nascimento da criança. “Assim como aconteceu com esta linda família, a árvore será plantada em um local escolhido pelos responsáveis, preferencialmente em uma área urbana pública, sendo uma ação inteiramente feita em conformidade com a legislação. Chapter 25: The Other Secondary School

Angelo was not expecting to be pulled out of his morning geography class, but he wasn't complaining. Yujin, Dante, and Layla were waiting outside when he got there.

"Oh, you're here," Dante said. "I . . . don't know what this is about."

"Yeah, me neither," Layla admitted. "But it can't be anything good."

"Maybe it's Melanie related," Angelo suggested. Dr Violet stuck her head out of the room and called them in.

"I'm sure you're all wondering why you got called here so early on in the day," she said. "And I promise, it's something good."

"What exactly does that mean?" Yujin asked.

"Arrow Point Secondary School, a school that we are thinking about having a partnership with, will be making an appearance to meet you," Dr Violet said. "They've heard a lot about you. You might even be working on a project together."

"What kind of project?" Angelo asked. His stomach was doing flips, but in a good way.

"That has yet to be decided," Dr Violet said. "You can discuss it with them when you meet them."

(PAUSE)

They met the other school's science and maths team the next day. There was six of them to their four, meaning they were outnumbered. They were all clearly older than them (around Santo's age) and looked perpetually annoyed at everything, sneering at disgust as they looked at the school they were standing in. The only adult with them was a tall, thin, pale man with a weak jaw covered in stubble and limp, greasy black hair. Oddly, he looked a lot like one of the students, a girl with the same stature and similar greasy black hair.

"Mr Snobton, what a pleasure!" Dr Violet extended a hand for him to shake. "I'd like you to meet the recently established Marbleton Secondary School STEM Club. I have got to tell you about the flying skateboard they made outside of school!"

"Oh, goodness, how wonderful!" Mr Snobton gushed. "And what are their names?"

"Oh, right, of course." Dr Violet asked. "Introduce yourselves, children."

"I'm Dante," Dante said, shyly.

"Yujin Moon," Yujin said.

"Layla Ismail," Layla sighed, rubbing at her head.

"And I'm Angelo Riva!" Angelo said chirpily. The Arrow Point students gasped and took a step back. The headteacher jumped.

"I'm sorry, did you say your surname was . . . Riva?" the headteacher asked.

"Yes," Angelo said. "Why do you ask?"

"You wouldn't happen to be related to someone named Santo Riva . . . would you?" a boy wearing a green turban asked.

Angelo's eyes widened. "How do you know my older brother?"

The visiting students took a big step back and began whispering among each other. "That's the little brother Santo bragged so much about?" they heard them whisper to each other.

"It has to be. They look identical. Wasn't expecting him to be such a nerd. Santo made him sound cooler."

"That doesn't mean that he's better. He could be even worse than his brother was."

"Is everything OK?" Angelo asked.

"Make that one stay away from us!" the girl with a bow in her hair shrieked, pointing a manicured finger at Angelo.

"What? What did I do?" Angelo asked.

"Anybody with the surname Riva is a bad seed! We don't want a Santo 2.0!" Mr Snobton snapped. The students cowering behind him nodded frantically.

"Why? What did Santo do?" Angelo asked.

"You don't know?" another student asked incredulously. "That's ridiculous. You can't not know."

"But I don't. I never got told anything about Santo's school," Angelo said.

"We will not be working with this . . . young man," Mr Snobton said. "I'll talk to you later, Dr Violet. Come along, children. We should leave." The students filed out, shooting smug looks at the Marbleton Secondary School STEM club.

"What is their problem?" Dante asked.

"It's not what, Dante, it's who," Angelo groaned. "And I know exactly who they're talking about."

(PAUSE)

"Angie!" Mirella giggled, when Angelo came home from school.

"Hi, Mimi," Angelo said, scooping her up and carrying her into the kitchen. "Mum, where's Santo?"

"Upstairs," she said.

"Good." Angelo put his little sister down and walked over to his older brother's room and knocked on the door.

"You can come in," Santo said.

"Santo, your old school was called Arrow Point Secondary School, right?" Angelo asked.

"Yeah, why?"

"Some of their science and maths team met with our STEM club and they recognized my surname. They asked if my brother's name was Santo, and then they said that everyone with the surname Riva was a bad seed. What did you do?"

"None of your business," Santo said.

"It kind of is. There's supposed to be a project between our school and their school and none of them want to work with me because of you. They say I'm bad news."

"Oh." Santo sat up and sighed. "Fine. Close the door so nobody else hears."

"Fine." Angelo closed the door, and Santo began to talk.

(PAUSE)

Ever since I was a little kid, I knew I hated rules. They were often stupid and punished the wrong people. The bullies would get away with things all the time and the normal people would get punished. The teachers would do their little talks and tell us that bullying was bad and bullying took place when someone with more authority repeatedly harming someone else with less authority. And the biggest authority figures, other than the teachers and the adults, were the kids that they put in charge and had to make sure that we were following 'the rules'.

Sweet faces to teachers and nasty faces to us, the teachers' pets made our life hell. They would even make up new rules that we had to follow or else. I had to take them down a peg somehow.

"Who put glue on my chair?"

"Who drew a moustache onto a picture of the headteacher?"

"Who rigged all the timers in science class to go off at once?"

It was always me.

Unfortunately, as a result of all of these acts of rebellion, I had gained the reputation of being a bad kid. Mama and Papa got called to school, I got yelled at and grounded, all sorts. Things didn't get any better when I got to secondary school.

The teachers made the rules, but the science team broke them with impunity. And in a school like that, a science-based school, those guys were in charge.

And they let me know it. They let everyone know it, and we all hated them for it. Someone had to bring them down a peg. Someone like me.

And it was glorious.

"Who made cookies with chilli inside that burned the mouths of the science team?" the teacher demanded.

"Who rubbed itching powder into the lab coats?"

"Who gift wrapped an exploding glitter bomb and sent it to the science team meeting room?"

And it was always me.

Admittedly, the thing that got me expelled was my very own magnum opus. You wouldn't know; you were only eight at the time, and I was thirteen. The science team was going to be receiving yet another award, and that was my time. I used a bunch of robot snakes and a very real snake, along with a remote control that would set off the sprinklers when I pressed the button. Once their shiny new trophy was being handed over, I released the snakes onto the stage and waited.

It was glorious.

They were screaming, the audience was screaming. Then the sprinklers came on like the best symphony.

And as they screamed, I sat back and laughed.

They found out it was me, of course. I was caught on CCTV sneaking the robot snakes onto the stage and setting off the sprinklers, and this was my last straw. I was expelled, the school banned my siblings and younger cousins from enrolling, and I had to swear not to tell you or Mirella or the younger cousins what I did.

(PAUSE)

"And that's what I did to the science team back in the day," Santo finished, breathing a sigh of relief. "You know, back when I was your age and stuff."

"Whoa," Angelo said. "Santo, that was . . . THE COOLEST THING EVER!"

"Keep your voice down!" Santo hissed. "Look, Mama already knows. But don't tell her that you know."

"I won't tell her," Angelo said. "But I do have to use it to clear my name."

"You're not clearing your name. You did nothing wrong. Just . . . stick up for people when they need it."

(PAUSE)

At the next STEM meeting, the four complained about the snotty Arrow Point science club. "Those kids were jerks," Dante complained, twirling a finger around his braid.

"And they're rubbing my brother in my face," Angelo said.

"Do you even know what he did?" Layla asked.

"Yeah, he told me. He got some remote controlled snakes and snuck them onto the stage with them. While they were freaking out, he set the sprinklers off and they were drenched. He got expelled and had to go to a different school," Angelo said. "Every child in my family is banned from Arrow Point."

Yujin gasped. "Even your adorable little sister?"

"Yes, even her." Angelo chuckled.

"They banned such a sweetheart?" Yujin gasped. "How evil!"

"She probably wasn't even born yet," Layla sniggered. "Although that is pretty harsh, now that I say that."

"I hope we don't have to work with them," Dante said. "They are way too high-energy for me."

And they laughed together.

(PAUSE)

They weren't out of the woods yet. As they walked out of school together, Angelo was collected by his brother and sister. Santo was wearing his spiked denim battle vest, contrasting Mirella's puffy pink dress. Unfortunately for them, Melanie saw this.

"AHA!" Melanie exclaimed, pointing at Angelo with a smug grin. "I always knew that Angelo Riva was a troublemaker! Just look at his brother!"

"Leave him alone!" Yujin yelled, using herself as a shield between Angelo and Melanie.

"Leave my little brother alone," Santo said, staring Melanie down.

"Yeah, what the hell, Melanie? You're not even a prefect any more," Layla said. Melanie gasped and stepped aside.

"How dare you! I am doing my best to ensure that this school doesn't go down the gutter, and you're just bringing street rats here!"

"Don't call my brother a street rat!" Angelo yelled.

"Come on, let's go," Santo said, dragging Angelo and Mirella away.

"I don't like that lady," Mirella said.

"Me neither," Angelo said.

(PAUSE)

"What kept you?" Angelo's mother asked.

"The mean lady," Mirella said.

"What mean lady?" Mrs Riva asked.

"This prefect girl from my school. She called my brother a street rat," Angelo said.

"She said what?" Angelo's mother looked at them with horror. "Who did it? Angelo, tell me who said that."

"This girl. Her name's Melanie Sainsbury," Angelo said.

"Great. And how do you spell that?" she asked, getting out a piece of paper and a pen. "I'm reporting her to the school."

"I don't think they'll do anything," Angelo said, sighing. "Santo's not a student."

"I'm not, but you are," Santo said. "Mama, make the call. Angie, after you tell Mama how to spell that girl's name, you can play with Mirella."

"Fine," Angelo said, scribbling something down so his mother could call the school and complain later. "That's it. Now leave me alone."

"That was all we wanted," Santo said, as he watched Angelo take Mirella upstairs.

"Angie, I wanna go to school with you when I grow up," Mirella said.

"Really? Why?" Angelo asked.

"So I can be in class with you and your friends," Mirella said.

"Mirella, that's the sweetest thing!" Angelo scooped his little sister up in a hug. "Can you promise me something, though?"

"Uh-huh."

"When you're my age, make good friends, don't get in trouble and be nice to people. OK?"

"OK!" Mirella said.

And just like that, Angelo figured that everything would be OK.
