For many reasons, few news stories captured the popular imagination this past week more so than that of the Claims Adjuster, the assassin of an American Health Insurance CEO.  In the land of mass shootings, it takes an extraordinary scenario to yield anything more than the shrugs of thoughts and prayers, but the popular imagination on both sides of the political spectrum was seemingly set alight, yielding at least two viral spontaneous folk songs, by @JoeDevitoSongs and @MipsoMusic, chronicling the tale of this unexpected folk hero for our times.  Striking while the iron is hot, I have medleyed them together for this week's #StupidAccordionTrick.

Song Review: Jacob Sharp feat. Aoife O’Donovan - “Other Side”

Three years after writing “Other Side” in the wake of a friend’s addiction-related death, Jacob Sharp finally issued it as his debut solo single.

“I talked myself out of releasing my own music so many times over the past few years,” the Mipso mandolinist said in a statement. “Feeling grateful to the many pals who convinced me otherwise.”

One of those pals was Aoife O’Donovan, who kicks in on vocals as she and Sharp sing:

Didn’t see it comin’/engine left runnin’

Despite the heavy subject matter, “Other Side” is a light-and-breezy, acoustic affair infused with hope about what lies in the titular dimension.
