Just finished watching Paradise of Thorns with a friend

Our thoughts (with some spoilers):

Overall, it had A LOT of potential to be a masterpiece, but it kind of went in a totally different direction than we thought it would and not in a way we particularly liked. Cinematography, acting, and music was great. Concept was good. Set up was good. The movie ended with us kind of not liking anyone. Especially after that very last fight. Everyone is objectively kind of a bad person.

Certain things we thought were unnecessary or could've been done a bit differently. Sek didn't need the whole cheating thing. Mo could've been a younger sister who hates Sek bc he got the land and not her. Or maybe she's a legitimate ex idk. Even an actually adopted daughter. This is partially bc the trailer (and first half of the film) leads you to believe it's a legal battle that shows what happens when gay ppl (who love each other) can't get married. Which does happen in the film, but Sek betraying people kind of weakens the impact of that. The focus is shifted.

Also the attempted rape was not needed at all. They could've continued with the slasher. It would've sufficed. Speaking of that slasher ending, where was Jingna? They weren't that far from him and they were screaming pretty loud.

My friend said she didn't like how quick Tongkam was to fall for Jingna. Personally (especially after seeing much bl) I can justify it from a plot perspective ig. I can work with it. At least the feelings. I think the suddenly acting like Jinga is his soulmate was fast though. Maybe he's desperate and lonely and wants to confirm an ally/loved one. Idk. Tongkam's brain confused me a bit.

I've said a bunch of negative things, so some positive things...

I think the Mo and the mom slowly but forcefully pushing out Tongkam was well done. It really made it feel like he was losing literally everything. Husband dead, house taken, literally sleeping outside without a good mosquito net despite having paid for everything. Well done. I felt the pain and frustration.

The actual pain of not being able to have the surgery done bc Tongkam isn't legally Sek's husband, and then not being able to get the land was intense. Really well done.

The sabotaging of the water and plants while Tongkam was out was smart and sad. The whole murder scene of the mom was intense and interesting. Tbh I thought it would've gotten more intense than it did. Wish they lingered on that plot a bit more. Similarly the reveal of Mo taking the chance to kill Sek was... in retrospect kind of predictable, but yeah fits the vibe and character.

That kiss scene under the mosquito net was aesthetically amazing. A+

My friend didn't like how it suddenly turned slasher at the end. Imo while it doesn't fit the vibe of the start of the film, I won't exactly say no to sudden blood and fighting. So some of that scene I did enjoy (minus the parts I mentioned above).

Conclusion:

Beautifully shot with great acting. Jeff looked gorgeous. Really had some amazing potential and I liked the first half the movie a lot. We both did. Some things were really well done and got me really attached and emotional to the whole story. Started going downhill due to certain plot choices we didn't really agree with. We also felt there was some plot holes. Wished some things could've been explained a bit better. This one is more of my friends thing, but I do think some relationships could've been a touch clearer. With a second watch on my own when I'm not chatting with a friend maybe I'd be fine for me.

I give it maybe a 7.5~8/10??? Do I recommend. Possibly, with warnings.

We got the earth and the sky, but has anyone asked about what you think of Abzu?

i love abzu!!! another one i have watched the gdc talk for which you can watch here!!

the two big things in abzu are the fish animations and the overall environment lighting - lets start with fish!! there are a lot of them. and when you want to animate a lot of things, your computer will explode. this is specifically when you animate things with bones, how a lot of computer things are animated

luckily one thing that gpus can be really good at is drawing a tonnnn of the same object really fast, using something called instancing. as long as its the same mesh and material, it can be rendered a ton with just a single draw call (like i am talking hundreds of thousands). so lets make 10 thousand fish. unluckily this doesnt work with skeleton animations. luckily you dont need them! especially with fish

even though all the objects need to be the same mesh and material, doesnt mean they cant have different input. not only that but shaders let you modify individual vertexes, so, what if you just take all 10000 fish and wiggle them along an axis, like this

and give them all slightly different inputs so they arent all doing the exact same animation, maybe by giving them each their own unique number. now you have 10 thousand fish swimming around, wiggling, at almost zero rendering cost

these are all individual 3d models and all their animations are running in the shader !

the other way they animated fish without giving them bones was through something called blendshapes - these are usually used for stuff like facial animations, where you move vertices around to your desired "shape" (so like maybe your default face is :| but you edit the vertices so your character goes :> etc), and keep track of the difference between each vertex's position and its original position so you can move it whenever you want

that doesnt need any bones so they used this for things like fish going CHOMP and fish making sharp turns

for the actual environment, they experimented with a bunch of things like using actual volumetric lighting, but in the end they found that just using fog worked best!! they did tweak it a bit though - they had a "zone" between where the fog started to get thick and when the fog just ended up being a solid color where they dimmed any lighting - this really helped the background geometry stick out and give that underwater feel (left is without dimming the lights, right is with dimming the lights!! fun to think about how firewatch did something similar but changing the fog color based on depth rather than literally dimming the lighting)

they also let different volumes have their own fog value, so if there was say a cave off in the distance, it could have less fog than the surrounding area for clarity & also made the fog look a bit more volumetric

and the other huge thing that helped was "portal cards" - not an official term but its what they called them, basically just quads they could stick in any place where they needed to make something "stick out", like a cave, or a hilltop that blended with the background too much. the card sampled the depth of objects behind it, and used that 0 to 1 value to map a color to it. and then the closer youd get to these cards, the more transparent theyd get, until youre right on top of it and you dont need the objects to stick out of the background anymore!! here you can see a Me, but very dark, and then i slide the card over it. the black and white is the camera depth of all objects behind the card, minus the depth of the card. and mapping that to a color makes me stick out way more than i was initially!! then as you swim closer to me, the card fades away, until you pass the card completely

these portal cards were also used to make the light beams poking out from the surface, theyre just animated a bit!! you can see how the portal cards affect the look of things in this frame breakdown

and one other thing thats pretty prominent that wasnt touched on in the talk is all the caustics on the ground, those little wobbly light things you see underwater. but those were probably? just added to every shader as a "add this caustics texture on top based on the with the texture mapped to the world x and z position and only if the object is facing up"

⟢ billy kaplan ⋆˙⟡ going to comic con with him and the whole process leading up to when we made our costumes and watching them come together so perfectly. tommy helped us make our costumes because he’s a literal art major and a talented one at that. but getting to go with billy and see him be so happy in such a crowded place where he’s barely recognizable and can be his full self without being clocked by fans was just amazing.

⟢ eli bradley ⋆˙⟡ the day he went to the liquor store, came back to the young avengers penthouse with a bunch of alcohol and mixers and let us all (minus cassie ofc) get drunk as hell with him. what he told us was he was practicing making and mixing drinks with kate, but he needed people to test them. in reality we had all finished finals and it was a rough spring semester for us all so he was just letting us celebrate and unload. and he was the one person of us all there who didn’t drink a thing and just watched out for us.

⟢ kate bishop ⋆˙⟡ the night she did my makeup then halfway through she said “wait can i do your drag make up instead?” and i excitedly agreed. we laughed like crazy as she did my makeup. we were scoffing down snacks and maybe were having some drinks that she had bought earlier that day. so we were drunk as well and cackling like hyenas. and yet when she finished i looked fucking amazing!! she made me walk around the penthouse showing people. my favorite reaction of the night was when tommy saw the makeup.

⟢ teddy altman ⋆˙⟡ when me and him made a bet, which he lost. and the punishment was for him to get a tattoo of my choice. but i’m a good person so i worked with him to choose a good tattoo for him. everybody was against him getting the tattoo so he snuck out of the tower and came by my house to pick me up to get the tattoo. when we got there, one of the artists had an opening and i really wanted a tattoo. teddy was hyped about us possibly getting a tattoo at the same time but i was like, “moneyyyy…” 😬 and without thinking he used his big ‘ol young avengers money to buy the session for me.

⟢ cassie lang ⋆˙⟡ when i had gotten paid so i took her to the mall so we could go shopping, since she expressed wanting to go and get something. it turned into a whole adventure and not just going to just the two shops we wanted to see. we had a blast looking around at clothes as well as other various shops. we also had gotten auntie anne’s pretzel bites and she had me try one of her favorite food stops in the mall. it was very fun getting to spend that time with her.

⟢ angela giarratana ⋆˙⟡ when she invited herself over to help me clean out the junk in every part of my apartment that she thought i didn’t need. i’m a borderline hoarder i’m going to be completely honest. but we started, and didn’t make a system. so we just had a big mess after we got distracted looking at everything and laughing over the random things i had allover my place. we did eventually lock in and get rid of some stuff. but it was wild for a good hour after we couldn’t stop laughing over the shit i’ve kept over the years.

⟢ shayne topp ⋆˙⟡ the time we went to a museum together because we heard of it and were one of the few who wanted to go and then the only ones able to go. it was very enjoyable spending that time with him. we didn’t talk too much, but still our time wasn’t without our jokes. we walked around, learned history, and like just had an intellectually relaxing fun time. the gift shop was another story though. and afterwards we picked up a quick bite to eat before parting ways.

⟢ courtney miller ⋆˙⟡ we were doing karaoke with a group of people from the office. and courtney asked me to sing a song with them. they chose the most perfect song, and i’m picky with my music so that means something. i had a blast with them that whole night but that 3-4 minutes was like so much fun because that song was so fucking amazing. and i told her that afterwards religiously.

⟢ chanse mccrary ⋆˙⟡ i took chanse and a few others to san francisco pride because they’ve never been and it’s one of the largest pride parades in america, and the largest in california. it was fucking insane, especially because of chanse. he convinced me to drink “at least a little bit” in his words. me and him were singing, dancing, screaming, all of it, while our other friends enjoyed themselves while also keeping an eye on us.

⟢ tommy bowe ⋆˙⟡ i was having a frustrating day, then the project i was working on wasn’t cooperating to the point i almost crashed out. my desk is by tommy’s so he noticed. he asked if i was okay and helped me with my feelings, even saying that my deadline can be pushed a day “it’s not a problem.” i stepped away from the computer. came back a while later, got most of it done without a hitch. and then tommy took me to a drag show that same night which was incredibly fun.

⟢ shayne topp ⋆˙⟡ he is always so attentive with not just my feelings, but everyone’s. he has a degree in psychology and all of a sudden he’s like the therapist friend. no, im just kidding. but he’s very understanding about people’s feelings and will always check to make sure everything is all right with someone.

⟢ courtney miller ⋆˙⟡ the amount of pictures she’ll take. during a shoot she’ll just take out her phone and take a picture of us. it’s very endearing for sure. and it’s always fun to see if we make it on her instagram or not. not to brag… but i often do. but she also will take pictures outside of work. and everytime i see her take out her phone i just smile and laugh to myself.

⟢ chanse mccrary ⋆˙⟡ whether we’re at work, i’m at home and he calls me to see if he can come over, or some secret third option, chanse will ask me to run lines with him. i love getting to spend time with him so anytime he thinks of me for this task i always get happy and am buzzing because of it.

⟢ tommy bowe ⋆˙⟡ he’s always very lenient and understanding with the deadlines i’m given for the edits (like the tiktok kind) i make for a secret official smosh account. he understands the work it takes to make one, and that sometimes i have a busy or rough week. he’ll sometimes even suggest too much leniency that i have to refuse.

I docked one point because they didn't have an Oikawa cameo :// which is CRIMINAL after how crazy everyone went for the earphone scene.. HAHA but honestly it was just too short imo.. it was very focused on the background of the characters (which I absolutely love!! we got to see baby KuroKen after all 🥺) but... at moments I was on the edge of my seat and then a (almost oddly timed) flashback would occur which would take away the adrenaline rush. Unlike usually, there was not much tension in the first set .. and then it felt like all of a sudden we were at the final set. There was not much emphasis on the game playing itself - I didn't even realise the game was over 😮 In a season the match would be more paced out, detailed and longer which I kinda wish for.. But i don't regret it going to watch it!!

I love Disventure Camp and how it creates unpredictable plot twists! I have NO idea who will be eliminated in next episodes. I just want all this drama.

I hope my theory about 3 finalists is not just a stupid random thing.

So... let me introduce them...

Grett - Jake - Connor

The modest antagonist VS The hero VS The cool guy

I also think about Alec as a finalist, but I suppose that he will be the 4th. Again. The curse of number 4, huh? Or maybe my perky intuition? Who knows.

GRETT

After episodes 13 and 14 I do want Grett to win! This girl deserves EVERYTHING. 🤩

Her parents don't notice her success preferring her brother to her. Grett also mentioned in S1 that the winning is the only thing that will make her parents proud of her. I suggest she may have overcome this in between seasons, but... let be honest, the childhood traumas are forever with people unless they will be overcome.

Grett had very toxic relationships (= total mess) with Yul (and we still hate him for this so much). No one deserves this type of partner. The breaking-up and the relief surely inspire her to be more competent and sassy like she was in S1 (and episode 15 trailer proves it). I also suggest she had some bad love experience in past too, she lacks of experience in romantic things.

Grett's makeover in-between season is ICONIC. I was so surprised when I saw her personal poster. I understand her so much (I did the same at 17-19): loss of weight is not so simple as it seems to be. She will be okay, more than okay, she is gorgeous.

Grett is the least obsessed antagonist of the final 8. She prefers to become friends with Gabby, save her own psycho and soul after all this mess with Yul, pass all the time actively as much as possible. She just does her job - being a rather strong and competitive.

JAKE

Me watching the first 10 episodes: What the hell are you doing?! Me watching the next episodes: YES, GO, JAKE, GO!

Yes, Jake has the most chaotic character development in the series. Sometimes he acts like a mess, a walking cringe or a biggest red flag. But I do like how he is changing. He struggles with himself and, thanks god, he is not an evil person. He is just very confused and traumatized person.

Jake already lost in S1 because of his behaviour. Now, when he begins to use his brain and to communicate with really cool and caring people (who give him very useful advice and inspire him so much), he has more chances to become the finalist. Miriam (this woman is so pure, I love her so much), Ashley (the oldest caring sister energy, she is brilliant), Aiden (he is more than iconic, that's all I want to say) - their influence on him is evident. I also suggest he could spread his money with friends and lover.

The last conversation between Jake and Tom definitely motivates him to win. No matter if he wins or not, he gets the desirable. I don't know how it will happen, I'm just sure! Minus one love drama, plus one finally happy couple.

It will be very curious to see how Jake overcome the obstacles himself. He is more team player, not loner wolf. But in the final and the episodes before it he should be ready to show all his talents and bravery. With his positive character development I can say he will do it.

CONNOR

From the ordinary character in S2 to one of the best one! No more words. He is flourishing in All-Stars! And I root for him!

Being one of the most sane person of the bunch of problem young adults - this is the true image of Connor. He doesn't understands the modern people and the modern culture, but he tries to. He is very supportive and kind to everyone (his speech to heroes alliance was very helpful and inspiring; he doesn't want to revenge or do something bad with Riya or Alec after all that crazy stuff, etc.). After revealing his secret to Jake in episode 14, it doesn't make him bad. Everyone has their own secrets and everyone makes mistakes. And Connor can take an effort in further episodes.

Earlier Connor inspires his friends. And now he will be inspired by them. It's more than real.

Quick reminder. This guy was eliminated and returned back after overcoming all the obstacles of the challenge. Does Connor give up easily? Of course, no. He is as disciplined and motivated as relaxed and chill. And in case of winning he will be the first person who takes the prize as being eliminated earlier. Just like Surfers in Ridonculous Race.

Connor is the least obsessed of winning money. And it may help him to win. In case of winning he seems to share some money with his friends (or everyone!). I don't think that money is important for him. And it's really cool. What a gorgeous man.

It’s well produced. I love a set that moves. Picture frames, puppets, set pieces. I especially liked the chair mouth and the moose. I also love maximalism, everywhere you looked was something! It’s my first time seeing the shadow being used to depict violence and I enjoyed that a lot. Music was good, acting was good. I thought pacing was good also because lots of movement was meaningful and engaging. I love horror, comedy, and musicals. But I don’t like getting sticky not fun minus 2 points. But it’s very good for a bunch of hs-ers

Rats Aca Demy- 8/10

It was perfect actually. Costumes and makeup were amazing. Audience participation, call and response is welcomed always. Plot was very nice. I’m not always into anything dramas but it was also funny so that always makes things better. Pacing was a little slow because of the audience participation tho. Like it is fun to do, but it felt a little too much at times. Like get on with the story which brought the entertainment value down a tad. I enjoyed the plot of this one more than evil dead. They set up a clear progression/plot points that they hit clearly as well. We all understood the assignment with more than enough time to sit with. It’s lower than evil dead by superficial reasons,, I love comedy AND musicals a little more. Categorically a musical has to really tank to not be above a play. Or a play has to be extraordinary to be on top.

Crooks- 7/10

Slow start, but once it started it kept on rolling. Ending was excellent. It had my favorite plot. It was funny and corny and also drama filled which isn’t always my favorite but the story was interesting to me. Like certain topics are usually big turn offs for me so when the dark material was murder and drugs I was relived and refreshed. Had my favorite character of the day. I loved every bit but the beginning of the play. It is placed higher on the list but rated lower because I was entertained more consistently with crooks but rats was more polished. Crooks was more charming though and I value charm!!

Bite- 5/10

When you think of a show by the local theatre group you see bite. Its flat seating made it difficult to watch, but not their fault. The acting was the worst of the shows, but they are very passionate. Live music is always more points. Low budget set is just show business finesse baby. A handful of excellent highlights lets them hold their head up at the end of the night. Alex’s pirouette, 12 year olds scream and major emotional moment!!, Ellie’s girlfriend in real life??, and that other guy I’m sure did something other than sweat. A lot of Alex’s bits were good and personally relatable. He’s a funny guy. There delivery was very much hs theatre reciting lines, but there were moments of embodying the character that I appreciated. A More relaxed voice that felt more like a reaction to another characters lines than just trying to get through the scene. I think it is definitely the standard show you’d expect. You go into it curious with low expectations and then go huh! That was different than I would have expected it, but it was also good or ok. Also the addition of a they/them character who looked normal and was normalized is refreshing. It’s the apocalypse babe, no time for coming out stories

Any scene with red lighting was my favorite, love seeing the descent of the psyche

Hiiii! I am so sorry it's taken me forever to do this. I've been crazy busy with work and I've had very little time to answer. I hope it all make sense. Most of the answers were typed out while half asleep, throughout the week, and I may have gotten some episodes/seasons mixed up. Sorry and enjoy?

1. How did you find out about the show?

It was 7/8 years ago.

I'm pretty sure it was a gifset on Tumblr. I already knew Betty by fame so I knew this show would be good. If I remember correctly it was a gifset of the scene where Rose asks "do we have any orange juice left?" And Dorothy says "no we're all out" while pouring herself a glass of juice, followed by a bunch of comments about the show.

2. One storyline you’d eliminate?

It's been a while since I watched the show so I don't remember everything. I can't think of anything besides empty nest right now.

Either that or the one about Blanche's daughter's artificial insemination. I didn't enjoy that one that much.

It's not exactly a storyline, but I'd eliminate the amount of unnecessary comments both Rose and Dorothy got in the later seasons, for being dumb or ugly. I think they went a little too far.

3. Best guest star/character?

I have a soft spot for Jean and her episode 💜

4. Character you most relate to?

Rose, 100%. I'm not the brightest, like her, and I love animals.

5. Favourite character?

Blanche and Rose

6. Favourite story of a cast member?

As in, behind the scenes? The joke they played on the girls, where the photo albums had the crew's crazy photos in them (it's a Christmas episode, when Blanche gives the others calendars).

In the show? 72 hours, for the message it delivered.

7. Which was the episode that got you hooked?

There wasn't a specific one. I hit play and never stopped watching!

8. You could wear one girl’s wardrobe for the rest of your life, who would you pick?

Uhm, honestly? Nobody's 🙈

I lost count. Around 10-12 among the four of them? Maybe???

I don't know much about Estelle and Rue to say it for certain, but I'd say yes, purely based on vibes.

I'd say Nurse Jackie, but only the earlier seasons with O'Hara. I mostly have comfort movies, like the parent trap or the emperor's new groove.

Season 2, between Rose's love interests and the song contest, is definitely a crazy one. Although S7 had some solid episodes as well (sick and tired and the one about the murder mystery dinner)

Season 2 has most of my favourite episodes.

Rose: something with animals

Blanche: iirc she's a pretty good dancer, so maybe that?

Dorothy: I'd say a literature professor or something in academia

20. Best aspects of the show in your opinion?

The way it tackled certain topics that are a taboo still to this day, and they mostly did it with care. Sure, not every joke has aged well, but most of them did! And even if there was conflict, it got solved. I'm thinking about Sophia's thoughts about Phil, for example, or the way Sophia and Rose acted in the AIDS scare episode.

Plain with chocolate chips, with caramel sauce, with strawberry or raspberry sauce.

Honestly? Neither. We have seen something about their past in the show. I think a full prequel would take away the key elements of the show. And, you'd find out which of their crazy stories are true and which aren't, when I prefer to keep it a mystery, if that makes sense.

Why is the earth shaking? Could it be... Godzilla? The Stereo Geeks weren't planning to watch Monarch: Legacy of Monsters but once we started watching it, we could not stop. Ron and Mon discuss what kept us going back to the show, what could have been done better, and how that father-son acting duo worked out. Warning, spoilers ahead.

Hello and welcome to a new episode of Stereo Geeks.

Today we're discussing Apple TV+'s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

I'm Mon.

And I'm Ron.

Let's talk about this show.

So we have 10 episodes of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

It's split into two timelines.

One is set in the 1950s, when the Titans are first spotted, and Monarch is being set up.

And the other is in 2015, after a Titan attack and the search for answers.

So let's delve a little bit deeper into what all this means, because you're probably wondering, who are the Titans?

So Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is a TV show, which is the latest installment in the Monsterverse franchise.

And to explain, the Monsterverse is this American franchise, and it's a shared fictional universe, something like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, if you like.

So this Monsterverse features Godzilla, King Kong, and a bunch of other characters who were originally created and owned by Toho Company Limited.

This franchise started with Godzilla, the movie in 2014, which starred Aaron Taylor Johnson.

Then we had Kong's Skull Island with Brie Larson and Tom Hiddleston, which I had no idea was connected to Godzilla, but it is.

Following which, we had Godzilla, King of the Monsters.

This is a direct sequel to the Godzilla movie.

This was starring Millie Bobby Brown.

And the sequel to that was Godzilla vs.

Kong, which I have not seen.

I didn't even know this movie existed, so this is news to me.

And Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is connected to all these films.

The next film is going to be Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

That's coming out in 2024.

None of these are related to apparently the superior Godzilla movie, Godzilla Minus One.

We have not seen that yet.

It's on our list.

I have to admit, I'm a little bit confused because I thought all the promos were for the same TV show, and it turns out Godzilla Minus One is a movie.

I have to say, Godzilla is not like a thing that we follow.

He was, you could say, in the background of our childhood.

I remember us catching a few Godzilla movies or snippets here and there, but really he wasn't really a thing for us.

But we decided to watch this show after seeing a few of the promos.

It looked kind of interesting.

And well, surprisingly, the show was compelling.

We could not stop watching it.

I think it helps that you don't have to watch all the other movies to understand what's happening in this show.

In fact, in my opinion, some of the reveals were actually more exciting because I completely forgot what had happened in the movies I'd seen.

First episode in, I was hooked.

I don't know why I was hooked.

But I mean, one of the reasons could be the fact that it really does deal a lot with the aftermath of the G-Day disaster.

It's the day that Godzilla attacked San Francisco.

I've always found that very interesting.

How does humanity pick itself up from mass tragedy?

And then in the first episode, we find out about Hiroshi's double life.

Yeah, I needed to see more of that.

Honestly, this show is unpredictable in so many ways, not always in good ways, but it keeps you guessing and really keeps you wanting more.

So let's get into some of the negatives.

The show is so inconsistent with storytelling.

Is Monarch good?

Is it bad?

When did Monarch actually begin?

Even that's up for debate.

Like they say one date at one point and somebody else is convinced it's another date.

Very confusing.

Also, please explain why Hiroshi made the life choices that he did.

10 episodes, we still don't have an answer.

And let's not even get into what's actually happening in the show.

I can't say I understood most of what was going on on screen.

And I don't believe I understood people's motivations either.

I know this is a fictional fantastical show about kaiju and monsters.

Even then, I would like the science to make some modicum of sense.

I can't say it did.

Maybe because of the unpredictable nature of the story and the characters especially, I was just like, you know what?

It's inconsistent and some of the actions are beyond belief.

But this is riveting stuff.

I want to see more of what's happening.

And I also like to say that I love how this show goes back to the Japanese roots of this character.

When I say this character, I mean Godzilla.

He's the main character, come on.

A lot of stuff when it gets commentated by the US, they kind of forget its origins or its roots.

So it's nice that Godzilla or in the original Japanese pronunciation, Gojira, its heritage is actually acknowledged in this show.

That being said, the Titans, the monsters of the title, aside from Godzilla, I was not that impressed with the other designs.

With Godzilla, I love the scale of this monster.

Apparently, it's even better in Godzilla minus one.

I can't wait to watch that movie.

But in this one, especially, you feel the scale, you feel the fear and this rippling design of this creature.

The others, I don't know, they just look like very poor knockoffs.

For me, I wasn't really thinking that much about the science or the inconsistencies.

I was really going with the flow because, like, you have a very innocuous start.

You have Kate, played by Anna Sawai, basically going to Japan from San Francisco, and she's going to settle her father's estate because he's been declared dead.

And when she goes there, she finds that he's got another wife and a child.

And her newly found brother, Kentaro, played by Ren Watabe, his immediate animosity towards Kate.

I really enjoyed watching that because that is a very natural reaction.

He's angry at his father.

His father is not here.

He's apparently dead.

He's going to take it out on the first person he can, and that's Kate.

And it was such a great foil to his mother's desire to know her husband's other child.

So for me, on the one hand, I was a bit upset that we didn't see as much of a Godzilla.

Ten episodes and maybe three or four glimpses.

The last episode, though, was outstanding.

Oh, my God.

But this is the kind of stuff that kept me riveted.

And the other thing that I really liked was Kate's response to G-Day.

She completely shuts down, which is, again, a very natural reaction because we realize, and it takes a couple of episodes, they don't show it immediately.

We just know that something bad happened to her.

All her students died.

She was the only one who got off the school bus and she watched all of them die.

That's not something that you can just bounce back from.

This trip to Japan is literally the first time in a long time that Kate is being human.

And then we learn, again, this is also slowly eeked out, that it wasn't just her students that she lost.

It looks like she also lost her girlfriend, who she was cheating on.

Like father, like daughter, apparently.

Yeah, I have to say, I really like the younger actors in this show.

Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, and especially Ren Watabe.

They really held their own and carried the show.

Sawai, I felt like she was so sweet and she was so emotional as Kate.

And you really feel for this character, who's been through so much.

And she faces an even more ridiculous circumstance in the very first episode.

She thought surviving a literal monster attack would be the worst thing she ever faced in her life.

Well, wait till you get to Japan.

Talking about Kiersey Clemons, her May is such an anomalous character here.

Honestly, at first, I thought she's just a tech person.

You always have the tech person in these monster movies.

But then we kind of slowly find out that May and Kentaro were in a pretty strong romantic relationship.

She's learned Japanese while she's been there.

And then May just starts revealing that she's got all these secrets.

She's not telling us what secrets, but there are a lot of secrets.

And these are the kind of things that will get her killed.

And everybody around her as well.

Unlocking those truths about May, there's an entire episode that's dedicated to that.

That's how important a character she is.

It really kept me riveted.

But I would say that once those secrets are revealed, I felt like May kind of faded into the background.

She didn't have as much to do.

But the show still tries to keep some kind of a focus on her.

Because then she kind of becomes the love interest for Kit.

Yeah, I've seen Clemence in a few other places, and I've never been all that impressed by her.

But I really dug this performance of hers as May.

She's really someone who's no nonsense.

She's also scared, she's angry, she's kind of lost.

And then it becomes this really sweet kind of thing between her and Kate, where they're always looking for each other and trying to help each other out, and it's really, really adorable.

Oh yeah, that was just so cute.

I really like the fact that, you know, there's romantic chemistry between the actors, and any other show, they might have just ignored it.

But I was kind of relieved that the show just went with it and said, okay, fine, these two have great chemistry, let them be a couple.

It sucks for Kentaro though.

But there's a love triangle in the past as well.

Yeah, see, this is where the story issues come in, because it wasn't until Kate and May have this really sweet moment, not a romantic moment, but it's the start of one, that you realize, oh, this is the start of a love triangle.

Oh, they're paralleling something from 1950.

A better writing team would have made that connection more seamless, and not just that connection.

It would have been throughout the show with other parts of the story.

But I really want to talk about Ren Watabe.

To me, he was the star of this show.

I also think he got a lot to do.

Kintaro is really the emotional core of the story.

He also goes off alone on several occasions.

Those are stupid decisions, but you know, that's focusing only on him.

So I found that he was carrying a lot on his shoulders on his own.

He was really excellent and really understated as well.

I genuinely would love to see more of him in Hollywood, but I do not know.

But yeah, these young folks, really, really good.

Let's go to the storylines in the past.

So we've got Keiko, who is a Japanese scientist.

She meets Lee Shaw, played by Wyatt Russell, and Will Randa, played by Anders Holm.

Now this is where the other love triangle comes in.

I have to say they didn't have as much chemistry as the three in 2015.

Honestly, the romance makes no sense in this show.

It's absolutely bizarre.

Like, who's in love with whom?

Why?

How do the timelines on some of these romances even work?

Why is X kissing Y when they were actually marrying Z?

I don't understand what is happening.

Weird, weird, weird.

Yeah, I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that Keiko is an amazing character.

Like, she was my favorite on this show.

She is formidable.

She's smart.

She's also really passionate about her work, and especially to protect the Titans.

I really liked that about her.

She doesn't want to blow the Titans up.

She doesn't just see them as a threat.

She sees them as a whole bunch of other creatures who have been happily living side by side with humanity and she wants to protect them and learn from them.

Mari Yamamoto was really good as Keiko, but I think she needed more story.

I feel like she got the emotional angles, and yes, her passion for her work and these creatures was great, but I just felt like she needed to be more of a doer.

Well, there's a reason why she didn't get as much story as we would have liked, and that's kind of something that happens in the very first episode.

And the rest of the season, I felt like it subsumed the fun science stuff that Keiko was doing with the Keiko-Lee-Billy love triangle in a way that added a layer of complexity to their interactions, but I'm still struggling to understand why Keiko got with Billy at all.

He seems to be a bit thick to me.

No offense, but I was wholly unconvinced by Anders Holm, who plays Billy Rander in this show.

Not sure what vibe he was going for.

I mean, it's kind of explained in the last episode, but at the same time, throughout the show, I'm like, he seems to be on a different plane than the rest of the show characters, so I was just not interested in watching this character at all.

But I love the casting choice of Wyatt and Kurt Russell playing the same character at two different ages.

I'll admit, the Nippo baby conversation comes into the fray here, but it was still a lot of fun to watch.

I don't know about you, though.

For me, it does put a spotlight on how Wyatt lacks the charisma of his dad.

I mean, I'm not even the biggest Kurt Russell fan here, though we did watch a lot of Tango and Cash's Kids, so that might explain a lot.

But even then, I'm like, Kurt Russell just has this presence, and he's so good.

And then whenever it was Wyatt, it's like, okay, yeah, he's doing his thing, but oh, no, let's bring Kurt back on the screen.

Honestly, I really liked watching the Russells.

It was so unexpected.

And I love the…

Obviously, the camera did these things where you're looking at one person's face and then you go to the other ones.

But there was such synergy between their characters.

I really was very impressed by that.

And yes, I agree.

Wyatt doesn't quite have the charisma of his dad, but you can kind of see why Keiko liked him.

And you can kind of see why the young people in 2015 just follow Lee Shaw, even though they don't know who he is, they don't know his connection to their dad.

They just go with him.

But there's just something about Kurt Russell.

His Lee Shaw is just so scarily driven and he's almost like way too enthusiastic and funny and jolly, but at the most inopportune moment, like everybody is terrified around him and he's like, oh my god, this is amazing what's happening.

What?

No, we are almost going to die.

But I loved watching him.

Yeah, I think, you know, when you're watching somebody like that, who's got just so many levels to his performance, the way his face lights up and he sees this particular person and other times when he knows something and he doesn't want to reveal it or he's like a little bit scared, but again, Macho Guy doesn't want to reveal that.

You see that and then you've got all these characters in Monarch.

They were the weakest link for me.

Everybody, I know they were doing a good job, but they just were so dull.

All those performances were so dull.

The characters were so dull.

But that final scene in the finale though, huh?

I'm not even that invested in the Monsterverse and I got so excited.

Bring on season two.

Honestly, this is the kind of show where you come for the titans, but you stay for the human drama.

And with that ending, we need a season two.

During last night’smeditation, instead of the popping sound, I perceived its less forceful counterpart, the percussion sound. The bunch of strikes came from various points in a horseshoe pattern from the centre of my head. In fact, it felt like a 3 dimensional shape than a flat horseshoe.

All sounds came from the back of the head, or the sides but all very close to the centre of the base of my brain. Or so it seemed when I ‘heard’ them. The area of my head that seems to be untouched by the meditational phenomenon of ‘hearing’ sounds coming from it, is the front. My forehead is not where my attention turns to often as a result of following sounds.

That’s about my meditation from last night. It was a step-back kind of maintenance meditation. Some work is left to be done by blessed life energies at a level where l will ‘hear’ percussion sounds instead of popping sounds. So be it.

Last night’s meditation isn’t really what I came here to write about though. I just wanted to recap a certain aspect of my meditation practice of more than 2 decades.

Not having exchanged notes with another meditator on the planet, I assume that every meditator’s first realisation would have to do with the way the inner voice speaks. When I began my practice with unsteady steps, I realised that my inner voice has to outshout a bunch of interrupting thoughts in order to remain concentrated with the task at hand.

I also realised that when the same voice guides a purely mentally uttered meditation, it does so in a levelled pitch and gets interrupted all the time by other thoughts that I have entertained before sitting for meditation. It’s interesting how the inner voice that you can scream in internally begins to turn into a whisper as you advance as a meditator.

Eventually meditations just have imagery that seek your attention. It is minus any sound. It’s like watching television on mute mode. There is much Peace and inner quiet when one comes this far. By the time I got here, I was exhausted watching imagery. And all imagery corresponds to words. It is the sound of words that instantly generates mental imagery. The worst manner in which you can keep someone from thinking about ‘pink elephants’ is by telling them not to. Sigmund Freud’s Interpretation of Dreams has covered the phenomenon of absurd imagery that corresponds perfectly to the sound of words that were registered as memory by the dreamer.

Before I ‘heard’ the first sound coming from my head in June of 2023, I was already meditating far beyond the subconscious. I understand that the imagery coming from this depth of mind as free of desires but not free of the natural restlessness that our minds are made of. That residual restlessness hadn’t been undone by the Peace I was experiencing through meditations until June.

With the first sound perceived, I have begun freeing my inner voice of the last traces of restlessness in the depths of my mind. My inner voice that guides me through every waking and sleeping activity takes a break when I perceive blessed life energies striking through brain capillaries and popping out of a few!

I think Robin wouldve been pretty confused and annoyed by Bob when he gets called out and when discovered he knows nothing is probably annoyingly funny to him.

Robin is such a interesting character when I first saw kids my monkee brain goes Ueharacore but when you talk about him more I realised he was Kaito done right which is a interesting. Can i get more facts about him too?

You're right, I wrote him as basically a Kaito clone, but minus the annoying sexism. (Sorry Kaito fans, your man is annoying.)

I've already mentioned this I think, but his backstory is that he saved a bunch of kids at his camp from a mass murderer, and was hailed as a hero.

(surface pressure plays in the background. If I made character playlists, Mika and Robin would have to both have it.)

While Celene has like, a 10+ Charisma modifier due to her talent, he's the one with the best overall people and leadership skills. Its a shame that Val, who isn't good with that, took the other leadership position instead. Almost nobody dislikes him.

After he manages to burn his hands in the prologue, he's told that he's basically lost almost complete feeling in them, and limited range of motion. Due to this, he's basically unable to continue his job post killing game.

Context: He knows that he won't die in this, but he thinks non-fatal injuries will still happen. I don't know if I want to keep this plot point, but Mika helped with creating the Neo World Program due to her tech obsession and medical knowledge. On the off chance Junko would betray her, he took precautions to ensure the safety of her classmates. (because she did grow sentimental in the timeskip, sue her.)

At this point, he develops a concept about being useless to the group, and starts taking on the worst jobs he can still do.

When the food goes missing, he begins looking for it, despite not being one of the classmates that saved food ahead of time. (I imagine that at first, if nobody killed in Ch1 he'd go after Bob because he "knows too much", but as it goes on, he thinks he'd rather just give up his food and die first. But he's not certain on that, because he wants Junko to spare the THH class and do that killing game virtually.)

He's somewhat of a straightman in class trials, encouraging everyone to keep a level head, and trying to get Val and Mika to stop treating this like a competition.

But he's too indecisive to contribute much, since he can't help out much during the investigation due to his ruined hands.

He's sympathetic to Prim, and blames himself for not noticing the Competitive Eater plotting shit.

In ch2, he tries and fails to talk Mika into joining the group, saying it'd be good for group unity. But he and Val were the only ones that tried.

Like most of the group, it slips his mind to accommodate Aiden, and accidentally speaks over him on occasion.

When Mika brings up the theory that Competitive Eater isn't the traitor, and that they are still out there, he hesitantly agrees, and thinks its worth keeping in mind.

Due to Monokuma wanting him to commit murder, his murder fantasy counter is higher than average. He's a bit pissed that that was recorded accurately, but is more worried about those at the bottom of the list.

Takes double Mika-watch shift, but is quickly dismissed as Mika's accomplice since he doesn't have the range of motion required to help with the crime.

Once the BDA rings out, Monokuma actually tells him the blackened in case 3, since he's worried the class will come to a wrong verdict. Since Val was one of the ones he thought was low-risk, he's shocked. As a result, he becomes your Kyoko during case 3, since Val is emotionally wrecked and Mika hasn't taken up the mantle yet.

During trial 3, Mika starts suspecting shit since he seems certain about shit he has no business being certain on.

He takes a leading role in the fear challenges, and encourages everyone into facing them. His fear is about being useless, but he manages to overcome it with clever thinking.

He's the last to attempt murder in chapter four, since Mika's stopped everyone else from doing so. Mika manages to speech 100 his way out of it, saying that something (his plan) would be bound to happen soon.

While he doesn't suspect Mika for the amnesiac dropping dead (you can't fake a mental breakdown that well.), Mika absolutely suspects him, but doesn't want to tell the class why, since the traitor is a useful tool to keep the others in line.

After its discovered that the death was of natural causes, the trial shifts to "vote out who you think is the traitor" since he didn't kill the person who was actively stopping murder attempts and that will not stand.

Eventually, he's deduced as the traitor, and is prepared for death.

His execution is that instead of being the savior of those kids like he was in the past, he is the kid. His legs are tied, and there is no trick he can think of to prevent his fate. This is the one execution Monokuma didn't think of a win-condition for, since he was never meant to try and escape.

But Mika manages to cause an electrical outage with the voting machines, causing a blackout to occur. As a result, the Skaters can sneak in and rescue him.

Mika then argues that since Monokuma says every execution has a win-condition this is legal. He didn't specify that it had to be the win-condition Monokuma wants.

Then Chapter five begins, and Mika goes back to being the group crazy person by saying she will torture Robin for information if he doesn't spill everything. Of course, he was intending to spill. Thats when the information that they are in a simulation, and are literally a test to see if the canon!Danganronpa games would work. That those who died are alive but comatose, but due to Robin's failure, Monokuma will make the next killing game be real.

Robin manages to hit the right emotional beats to recruit Mika, and chapter 5 begins by the two of them searching for ways out.

Tagged by @lightflame. Alright, I'm ready to answer these questions. I'm usually on mobile, but for a long post like this I'd want to be on a laptop or PC. Wanted to make this a post that's just as long.

Last song I listened to: "AA EE OO" by japanesecoffee. The artist primarily makes songs using audio samples from the Twitch streamer Jerma985, and they're all pretty catchy. In the past few months I've picked up a new artist's songs, then listen to them a full half of the time I spend listening to music, and then after a couple weeks put them into more even ratios with all my other songs. Put another way, I briefly obsess over artists and then listen to them in ever-decreasing amounts as I replace them with other artists. This artist is just the most recent, and I think it's been about a couple weeks. Other artists I got into around the same time are Jazz Emu and Phil Makes Noise.

Last book I read: "Fractal Noise" by Christopher Paolini. It's good, but a little longer than it should be. It could have been cut down by about a quarter and still tell the story it wanted to tell. However, it's a story about grief and stubborn determination, so maybe the slow pacing was integral. I enjoyed it personally, as someone who's read Worm I'm pretty used to slow and confusing pacing decisions. I'd also recommend it to anyone who's read Worm; however, they should be warned that it's got the same overall tone minus the jaded view of the narrator. By that I mean it's largely depressed in tone and half-inspiring, half-discouraging, and leaves a bittersweet taste in your mouth when it's over (as in, "I really wish that the avoidable suffering was avoided, but I'm impressed by how far the characters made it").

Last film I watched: The Phantom of the Opera (2004). A girl I know wanted to get a watch party together and watch it since she's seen it a bunch of times. I was the only one free. It was really good, and I was surprised by how much I still enjoy musicals. It's been a while since the last musical I watched.

Last TV series I watched: "Severance," several months ago. If we're talking full TV seasons. If we're talking the last full episode watched, then that would be "Life Lessons with Uramichi Oniisan," an anime. Both of these are very good but extremely different. Google says that "Severance" is a thriller, but I would say it's got enough humor to count as a comedy-thriller. Very surreal, and very high quality. "Life Lessons..." is a comedy about burnout and had me cackling on every episode. I don't have premium Crunchyroll so I'm stuck on the third episode for the time being.

Last video game I played: "4D Golf" by CodeParade. I finished the game in about 10 hours, and it is incredibly good. If you play any mini-golf game, play this one. The developer and composer did a great job, and really makes imagining 4D space intuitive. There aren't that many 4D games out there, and I've only played "4D Golf" myself, so I think this should really be more popular for what it is. Plus, I made my own 9-hole level collection (called it "Unfun Dunes" because it's not very polished). If you're interested, check out the devlogs that CodeParade made on his Youtube channel. They're super interesting and are what got me hyped about the game in the first place.

Last thing I googled: "Grandline 3.5" -- so I was watching a Youtube video about a funny grappling experience by Zee Bashew (funny video, I recommend it -- called "Grappling in AD&D is wild"), and one of the comments mentioned a comic called "Grandline 3.5" which, from the name and context, sounded like a D&D retelling of One Piece. It is just that. I read a few pages and might pick it back up later. I was interested since I've read Darths and Droids up through the original trilogy, and it was pretty formative for me. I read it in high school. I quit reading it a little ways into the retelling of Rogue One, but it's still updating and as far as I can tell is just as good as it used to be. Long story short, I'm always interested in D&D webcomics, especially ones told in the style of Darths and Droids (where it's an established story, but the characters are being played by a D&D group, and they're constantly going off the rails). Yes, I know that Darths and Droids is actually not the first of its kind. That would be DM of the Rings. However, I only found DM of the Rings through Darths and Droids, and Darths and Droids is much longer and just as entertaining. Also, I've never played D&D but I might when I have time and a group.

Last thing ate: Rice and cheddar cheese. Usually I eat spaghetti and cheese. Yes, this is really unhealthy, I should eat vegetables, etc. etc. I eat vegetables maybe once a week, and fruit about the same amount. However, I can also easily run a six minute mile and can run at nine-minute mile pace for over an hour on a good day. Never mind, I take it back. That just means that if I took better care of myself, I could be doing even better.

Amount of sleep: 6 hours (complicated). So, I actually took a lot of naps the day before, so it's more like 8-10 hours total. But uninterrupted? 6 hours. And normally, I get about 8 hours. I'm not sure what I should be getting, though, since I usually stay up late and wake up after I've slept through a class or two.

Currently reading: "Bacon Master of the Apocalypse" by Frank Morin. It's been a few months since I've read any chapters in it, and I started it before "Fractal Noise," but I don't know if I should count serial webfiction that is still ongoing.

Last song I listened to: Soap by The Oh Hellos. I burn CDs and listen to them in my car. (The first few I tried to give themes and titles, and select the perfect song orders, but ended up kind of bad and the other was cursed and wouldn't play even though I remade it three times, so I just switched to throwing a ton of songs together on "Random Mixes" and enjoying.) I was listening to my very first random mix on the drive home from work and this one came up. It's a pretty snazzy song. I think Theseus and Hello, My Old Heart are my favourites from the band.

Last book I read: Can I do a couple? I just recently finished Play of Shadows by Sebastien de Castell. It's the first book of Court of Shadows, the sequel series to his Greatcoats series. Greatcoats is one of my favourite series, filled with swashbuckling action, clever humour, and an absolutely miserable protagonist, Falcio val Mond, who always manages to get back up and keep going anyway. I read everything de Castell writes, and after a string of books with severe pacing problems (check out The Malevolent Seven for a book that doesn't have a second act) and other problems (I have a hard time seeing any book topping Crucible of Chaos as the worst book I've read this year), he finally seems to be back. The book didn't pack quite the emotional punch of some of his other books, but it definitely made me want to jump up and cheer for the heroes at the end.

The other book I just finished is The Warm Hands of Ghosts by Katherine Arden. I liked her Winternight Trilogy (look it up and be prepared for some absolutely gorgeous covers, with prose to match), so I was excited to see something new from her. This book was about World War I, with some fantasy elements used for magic realism. (Portraying a soldier's struggle with addiction and PTSD through the lens of him losing his soul to the devil was a brilliant idea.) I most subsist on a steady diet of fantasy books, but this one had me hungering to read a few more historical books. I might have to pick up some books about the Halifax Explosion.

Last film I watched: I haven't watched much on my own for a while, but my friends do a movie night every Sunday. The last two times I tuned in, we watched Jesus Christ Superstar and Pokemon 3: Spell of the Unown. They were both fairly cute movies. I liked Judas's actor.

Last TV series I watched: I've been making my way through The Office for the first time. I'm on Season 3 and this happened to me, actually. There was some stuff I was like, "Wow, that was funny. I should tell my coworkers about it," but then I realized that I can't be the guy who tells his coworkers about this funny new show called The Office.

Last video game I played: If visual novels count, Umineko. I've been working my way through it slowly for about five and a half years and I'm finally closing in on the end. It's peak fiction and the greatest love story of the twentieth century. It's also funny I picked a game this insanely long for my first visual novel. Other than visual novels, I just finished Pokemon Legends: Arceus, after putting in 104 hours this year. Completing the Dex is my favourite part of any Pokemon game, so having it be more involved and include a big checklist made the game basically crack for me. I've also been casually playing some Star Wars: Battlefront II (2005) with my brother. Every time we play it, I'm always amazed by how good it is and how much content it has. I want to take command posts forever.

Last thing I googled: "Dandadan Aira". I just started the manga the other day and I like her best, so I wanted to double check her full name, I think? Other than that I'm mostly looking up when books are available at my local stores. I've been religiously checking when The Book that Broke the World will be available and I'm not even sure if I'm buying it.

Last thing I ate: A few snacks from my snack drawer. I also had a Quaker yogurt bar at work. I bought a big box of them last year, but I had to throw them out because of the Salmonella. (Chewed through a lot of them before that came out, though, including eating three on an airplane.)

Amount of sleep: Supposedly seven hours, since I went to bed right after finishing The Warm Hands of Ghosts last night. The only problem is that if I get to bed at a good time, I sleep fitfully, so I'm either sleeping poorly or sleeping well, but not getting anywhere near enough sleep.

Currently reading: I started Empire of Silence, the first book of The Sun Eater by Christopher Ruocchio, at work today. I've had the first three books sitting on my shelf for a year or two and I finally got around to starting it. (I'd resolved to do both this series and Kushiel's Legacy this year, after having both for so long, and I got that one done at the start.) I'm not very far in, but I enjoy the writing style a lot, even if a lot of the worldbuilding is obviously cribbed from Dune. (Whoa, look, mentats.) I've heard it picks up a lot in the second book, so I'm excited for what's in store for me.

music keeps things energetic at the start, but podcasts keep his mind stimulated when he’s been driving for a while. 

the original plan is to split the driving, but you end up falling asleep with your face smushed against the window and jean doesn’t have the heart to wake you up. he doesn’t mind driving the rest of the way.

stopping for food every couple of hours to make sure you’re both eating properly, not just snacks. you do have plenty of snacks, though. 

jean going "uh – excuse me” whenever you open a bag of something and sticking his hand out. he’s like a dad, he always needs a handful of whatever you’re having. sharing is caring.

S5 Ep 27 Part 2: Yugi Gets Robbed

A shorter part than the last one because I have no idea where to split this without a card game smack dab in the middle of the episode.

Last we left off, Grandpa has finished his story about how he used to be hot in Egypt and tells Yugi that despite everything he just said, Yugi is NEVER allowed to be hot in Egypt. Which will be relatively easy for Yugi to do since he does not have Young Grandpa Swagger.

Which is when Yugi reveals that he fell asleep halfway through the story

Now that all of the pieces of the show have been talked about so we, the viewers, remember what they were, it’s time for Yugi to go the hell to bed.

If it weren’t for the creepers that have been spying on this entire situation.

I cannot believe I have to suffer Rex and Weevil yet again, but they are consistently the first miniboss of like every season.

(also if you’ve noticed there’s a black bar on the side of everything. I figured I should recrop it, until we got to this dream sequence where, you’ll notice, they put the white gradient ON TOP of the black bar, which means this was the original dimensions. This was how it looked out of the box. HOW does this happen? You MADE it. You made it too small? What? HOW? what HAPPENED here?)

Because we’re not done with exposition, Yugi and Pharaoh decide to gush about what jobs they do for the other. Just in case no one has ever turned on Yugioh before, which, honestly? Probably likely. Kids and teens have goldfish memories and very little reading comprehension.

Like you ever realize how weird it was that we used to have classes where all we did was we read a book and then were tested on if we actually remembered it within moments of reading it? How wild is that concept? And how wild was it that we super didn’t remember a majority of anything written by Steinbeck?

Like you get to college and lit classes change from “do you remember this?” to “OK but can you write about this?” and that’s such a huge shift that we only expect from adults. The brain is freakin weird. Also High school English classes kind of suck.

Which is when Yugi brought up this plot point from Season Zero I thought would never ever come back in a billion years:

Like he didn’t say “hey remember how I think all my friends became my friend because I wished upon a haunted necklace?” they didn’t bring up the curse thing. But, he did mention how he had zero friends and didn’t talk to anyone before Pharaoh showed up.

Which like, this series started with Joey and Tristan and Tea already at Yugi’s side. They were already his friend. This is completely new information if you didn’t watch Zero.

That whole arc with Rebecca in it just 10 episodes ago does not matter?

Bakura is also not here but that just makes sense (and would also confuse new viewers a lot.) I personally thing Bakura made that a choice, he’s got a lot of personal ghost related issues and probably doesn’t want to be around people if he could murder them unintentionally (or intentionally, depending on which half of Bakura you’re talking to)

Now that we are all reacquainted with the plot and overarching cast of Yugioh (minus Mokuba), Rex Raptor picks up a rock and smashes it directly through this window.

The most asshole move.

This window is on the ROOF. This is an ATTIC window. Yugi lives in an ATTIC. Their house is SCREWED. The game store is screwed! Skylights already leak a bunch, everyone who’s had a skylight has dealt with leaks, but damn. Imagine if you just had some asshole ruin your skylight during a heavy rainstorm. Good luck trying to find a big enough kitchen bowl to catch these drips. Good thing your store isn’t full of priceless paper cards.

Grandpa’s poor Blue Eyes White Dragon is soon to be soaked as well as already being ripped and covered in tape. Just a miserable time for that card.

Also, you may think that I forgot a thing I said I would do, and no, I did not forget.

This was way easier and quicker to do than I realized, because I am like a professional pajama drawer, and I should have done it from the beginning of the episode but I had some tech problems that we’ll get to in a little bit and I was like “I just need to publish this thing.”

And then a very good ironic moment happened when Rex and Weevil opened this tiny travel tote, and much like the bag of winds in Odysseus, took about half a second to realize they were absolutely dead.

This horrible bag is full of every single millennium item except for that damn puzzle. And also the ring which decided that Rex and Weevil were nasty boys, but it wanted someone nastier.

And in case you were like “Isn’t Bakura’s font different now than it was earlier this episode?” Yes. It is. I’m not fixing it. This is his new font now. It’s been a day.

Also, fun fact, I’ve mentioned before that as a middle schooler I was basically a Bakura cosplayer and had no idea, well when I got to High school I wanted to make some ~Changes~ to my wardrobe, so I got myself a long black trench coat from Esprit. It was my first big clothing purchase of my life, a birthday present, and I wore it nearly every day with my casual striped t-shirts and khakis JUST LIKE THIS.

I hate this.

I can’t believe I was cosplaying Bakura not just in middle school but also in High School and had no freakin idea it was ever happening.

Also I still own that coat because 1.) I haven’t grown any taller and b.) I’m just waiting for matrix coats to come back. The new movie is coming out on HBO or whatever, maybe we’ll all get into long black coats again. That coat is rad. I kept the coat.

Like...this is a good coat, this is a great glam up on Bakura, I dig the coat.

So, before Rex and Weevil could enlist in the Bakura army, Bakura just kinda offs em (They’re not on the deathcount yet because I don’t know if they’re dead yet). And Bakura, who remembers dying and being dead the last time he touched a God Card, was like “wow, who the hell wants a stupid God card, I have a millennium ring” and down they went. Which is about when Yugi showed up in his pajamas and no shoes on.

which like...slightly not intimidating way for a Pharaoh to introduce himself to his nemesis, but it is 4 AM.

So, next episode we get to see a pretty wild stand off. Does Yugi even have cards right now? Does he keep them in his pajamas?

Like how nasty are Yugi’s feet right now? Kid didn’t even bring his house slippers with him. Maybe the streets of Japan are like really clean but I can’t imagine walking through any major city without shoes because of how much broken glass there’d be from trash cans that didn’t quite make it into the trash truck.

Man what if Rex and Weevil are finally dead? What a wonderful way to start off this arc, honestly. A good episode. I heard the quality is going to be hit or miss the rest of this arc, but that’s pretty normal for this show. This was a nice episode. Nice job, Yugioh.

Amnesia

Pairing: Henry Cavill x Reader

Warnings: way too descriptive explanation of eating a piece of schnitzel off a fork (i got carried away), bratty!henry, slightly toxic!henry, violence towards women (slight), swearing, angst, alcohol consumption.

A/N: Thank you so much for the request! I wasn’t sure if you wanted a happy ending or a sad ending, so I wrote both! Hope you enjoy ❤️ I also listened to Amnesia by 5 Seconds of Summer while writing this, so it may be slightly based on that song haha.

You had met Henry at Comic Con in 2013, when you had gone to see his panel for Man of Steel, and got the opportunity to ask him a question. Your question intrigued him, and shortly after the panel, you were approached by Henry himself, who was also going to the Game of Thrones panel. He remembered you from his panel, and the two of you sat together. You spent the rest of the day together, and you ended up joining him and the cast of Man of Steel for drinks that night.

After Comic Con, you two stayed in touch through Instagram, and eventually you gave him your number. A few months later, your job relocated you to London, and he offered for you to stay with him, to which you accepted. You two were great roommates, and even better friends. But, this didn’t stop your feelings from blossoming.

Everything about him was attractive to you. From the way he always had a slight scowl on his face in the morning, giving you and Kal only grunts as responses until he had a cup of coffee, to the way he would get sucked into his video games and not realize over half the day passed by without him. You loved the way you could make him snort if he laughed hard enough, and that his sides were ridiculously ticklish. You adored how much he loved to cook, often calling you into the kitchen to taste his new recipe of the week. But, your favourite thing about him was how he treated you.

Even though you were not an actress, he never treated you as anything but an equal. He was always so interested in your work, and would always be the first person to congratulate you when you reached a goal you had been striving for. He was the one who brought you soup in bed and took care of you when you were sick without a second thought, and held you whenever you needed a good cry. Your friends often referred to him as your husband because of how much he cared and looked out for you. You never put much thought to it however, until your mom asked you if you two were dating when he joined you at a family gathering.

He had stood up to go and get himself a beer, and brought you back your favourite drink and some of your favourite foods on a plate without you even asking. He then sat next to you, and engaged in a conversation about NASCAR with your dad, uncles, and grandfather.

Your mom leaned over ad whispered in your ear, “Are you two together?”

You gave her an alarmed look, and shook your head vigorously. “No, mom, we’re not. Why?”

Your mom’s eyes drifted over to Henry. “You two sure seem like you are. Might want to talk to him about it, because the way you look at him as if he hung the stars and the moon specifically for you suggest different.”

You had shaken it off, and thought nothing of it until you were back at home the next night, and really thought about what your mom said. Did he like you, or were you just reading into things too much? You shook it out of your head, and rolled over to fall asleep.

But, when he called you into the kitchen to ask you to taste his attempt at making schnitzel for the first time, you thought about it again. You watched as he offered you a piece of the cooked meat on a fork, and you opened your mouth to accept it. You noticed how his eyes were glued to your lips as they wrapped around the fork, and how he slightly bit his lip as you pulled the meat off the utensil to chew it. You instantly smiled at the taste of the food, and Henry let out a breath both he and you didn’t know he was holding.

You told him it was delicious, and you watched how is eyes lit up in joy. He did a little happy dance, and instantly blushed when you giggled your way out of the kitchen.

The next time you thought about it was when you two were sitting on the couch, watching The Sound of Music, and you drifted off just as the Von Trapps were performing at the festival and escaping. Your head had called onto his shoulder, and he wrapped his arm around you like he always did. But then he did something unexpected. You woke with a start when he lifted you up, shifted his body so it was lying down on the couch, and laid you back down right onto his chest, you head coming to rest under his chin. “Thought this might be more comfy,” he had said, and you smiled and thanked him, before your eyes refocused on the movie, no longer tired.

You noticed all of these things, but you failed to notice how much of an interest your best friend had taken in him. He was never interested, he only had eyes for you, but he did notice.

He noticed how when he wasn’t in the room, and you were on call with her, she would laugh normally, but when he entered the room, she would laugh differently, as if trying to entice him with small, annoying and EXTREMELY squeaky giggles that made him want to claw at his ears. He had never taken a second look at her. He was head over heels in love with you, why would he look at your best friend when he could stare at the goddess of beauty that was you? He’d never thought he’d have a chance with you, so he settled to love you from afar until you found your person, at which time he would resolve to look for his. It wasn’t the healthiest mindset, but it worked for him.

When your 30th birthday had rolled around, Henry decided to be the loyal best friend and roommate he was, and throw you a birthday party. He and Kal decorated the house (more like Henry decorated the house and re hung the decorations that Kal pulled down while “helping”), bought a bunch of booze, and food, and invited all your friends (and your’s and his mutual friends), and your family, along with his (minus the children. Children and drunk parents usually dont mix well.).

He noticed throughout the night that you had become slightly more distant from him. Usually at parties, you would be glued to him like the sea urchin you had gotten stuck in your foot at age 10, but you gradually stopped seeking him out. Then, his eyes landed on you, talking to another guy.

A cold, sick feeling chill ran through his bones, and he instantly recognized it as jealousy. his first thought was how dare you speak to another man? But, then he remembered, that you and him were not together, and the guy had every right to talk to you. So, he headed over to the kitchen island which was serving as the bar, and decided to drown his jealousy in alcohol. His body would pay for that in the morning, but at that exact moment he couldn’t care less.

When you had stepped outside with aforementioned guy, he picked up the vodka and chugged as much of it as he could, desperate to get wasted. After a few more drinks, he felt sufficiently drunk. Then, your best friend sauntered up to him, and Henry was surprised to find that he could tolerate her for more than 30 seconds. The two of them struck up a conversation, and what surprised Henry even more was he didn’t push her away when she touched him, kissed him, or even invited him upstairs to “fool around.” Maybe alcohol wasn’t so bad after all.

You however, were having a great time. You and your friend Cody had stepped outside to continue your conversation, as Cody was pretty quiet, and the party was rather loud. You two had just stepped into the kitchen when you looked around for Henry to introduce him to Cody, who was a huge fan of his. You didn’t see him, but when you brought it up to Cody he just said, “Oh, I lose my boyfriend at parties all the time. He’ll be here somewhere.”

You two ventured around the house, but didn’t find a sign of Henry. So when you asked your mom where he went, you were shocked when she told you that him and your best friend had gone upstairs. You immediately raced upstairs thinking that you were going to break up a fight. He had never liked her, and often had to leave the room when you were FaceTiming with her, because she just “annoyed him to the point of wanting to pull an August Walker” he said. You’d always ignored it, because your boyfriends had never gotten along with her, and you just always assumed it was because she was protective over you.

But, when you walked upstairs and found his bedroom and bathroom, the spare bedroom and bathroom, and your office empty, you opened the door to your bedroom, and your heart instantly broke into a million pieces. He was butt ass naked on your bed, balls deep in your best friend, who was also completely naked.

You gasped, and Henry immediately stopped his movements and his eyes snapped to you. The widened, and he immediately sobered up before swearing. “Shit, Y/N.” He said, before pulling out of your best friend, and covering himself. He watched in horror as your eyes welled up with tears and you ran across the hall to his bedroom to lock yourself in. It was only in that moment that he realized he was in your room, not his. He immediately redressed, and ran across the hall to his room, and began banging on the door.

Your best friend scoffed at your reaction, redressed as well, and then joined Henry across the hall. “She’s just being dramatic.”

Henry looked at her confused. “Dramatic? She just caught us, her two best friends, fucking in her bed. She has every reason to be upset. She is not being dramatic.” Your best friend rolled her eyes, and crossed her arms. “Then can you get her whiny ass out of there so we can finish what we started?”

Henry turned around quicker than Pietro trying to save Clint. “No. What happened shouldn’t have happened.”

She rolled her eyes and stomped her foot like a child. “So you used me?” Henry scoffed.

“I’d say you used me.”

“How?”

He stared at her in amazement at her sheer stupidity.

“You CLEARLY used the fact that I was heartbroken and drunk. You’re always seeking me out when I’m around, and you change from this person who seems barely tolerable to a complete and utter insufferable bitch.” He didn’t allow her to speak, instead pounded on the door.

“Y/N! Let me explain!” He begged, and tried to ignore the way he could practically hear your best friend roll her eyes beside him.

“No! There’s nothing for you to explain. You made your feelings perfectly clear. I’m just sorry that I wasted 7 years being friends and being in love with you just for you to fall for my ex best friend.” You heard both Henry and your ex best friend exclaim, but you didn’t listen to a word they said, instead grabbing Henry’s AirPods, shoving them in your ear, and turning your music on full blast before laying in Henry’s bed.

Outside the door, Henry and your ex best friend were in a straight up crazy bitch fight.

“SHE’S BEEN MY FRIEND FOR LONGER!” She screamed.

Henry got right in her face, and screamed right back at her. “I’VE CARED FOR HER AND LOVED HER FOR LONGER THAN YOU HAVE! YOU USED AN AMAZING, BEAUTIFUL, LOVING, CARING, WONDERFUL WOMAN TO GET TO ME! WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?”

“SHE WOULD HAVE NEVER WENT AFTER YOU, OR EVEN ADMITTED HER FEELINGS! SHE’S PLAYING WITH YOUR FUCKING MIND! I SAW A FUCKING OPPORTUNITY TO GET LAID BY HENRY MOTHERFUCKING CAVILL AND I FUCKING TOOK IT! SUE ME!”

Henry grabbed her arm, and shoved her towards the stairs. “GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY HOUSE RIGHT NOW! DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT CONTACTING HER AGAIN, BECAUSE SO HELP ME GOD YOU EVEN TALK TO HER, I WILL RUIN YOUR FUCKING LIFE! I’VE DONE IT BEFORE, I CAN DO IT AGAIN!”

She ripped her arm out of Henry’s grasp and slapped him across the face before storming down the stairs and out of the house. When he watched as no one even gave her a second look as she passed, he knew that everyone hated her just as much as he did.

He tried pounding on the door again, but you didn’t answer, so he resolved to just rejoin the party. It was painfully obvious that you needed some alone time, and he was more than willing to give it to you at the moment, he needed to cool down as well.

The party cleared out less than an hour later, and Henry took it upon himself to clean up. The mess wasn’t too bad, but the living room could do with a sweep and the garbage needed to be taken out. He had a feeling he’d be out the majority of the next day, and he didn’t want you doing anything. He planned on spending the rest of the day making it up to you once he woke up.

He finished cleaning, and set the garbage next to the front door. He might be a 6’1 burly ass man, but he wasn’t crazy enough to go out after dark, who knows what’s lurking in the shadows out there.

He searched around the house for Kal, and became slightly panicked when he couldn’t find him, but then remembered he had put him in his bedroom before the party started, because he gets too excited around big groups of people, and Henry didn’t need stains from spilt alcohol all over the house.

He grabbed the set of keys that he had for the doors in the house that locked. Your room, his room, the basement, and your office all locked, so he had made sure to keep them on the same key ring. He walked up the stairs and knocked on the door once more, but as he suspected, you didn’t answer. He unlocked the door, and was immediately jumped by Kal. He gave Kal some pets, and let him run down the stairs and out the doggy door in the kitchen to go pee. Henry walked in the room, and his heart clenched in his chest at what he saw.

You were curled up in a ball on his bed, with his AirPods in your ears blasting music. Your eyes were puffier than hell, with tears stains all over your cheeks. Originally, he was going to move you to your bed, but he had a feeling you wouldn’t be sleeping there until you burned the sheets and got new ones, so he pulled the comforter over you. He pulled his AirPods out of your ears and put them back in the charging case. He took your phone and plugged it in, before turning on his TV and putting on Family Guy for background noise while you slept. Kal came bounding up the stairs seconds later, and growled when he saw Henry standing close to you.

“Oh, you’re taking her side now?” Henry asked the pup. Kal barked softly in agreement before glaring at his dad until he moved away from you, and then hopped up on the bed gently.

“Yeah, I don’t blame you. I was an asshole, wasn’t I?” He said, glancing down at you once more. Kal laid his head on your hip, and growled at Henry again.

Henry rolled his eyes. “Yeah, yeah I know. Your dad’s an idiot. I’m going. Protect her, ‘kay?” He said as he walked out of the room, and Kal huffed while snuggling closer to you and closing his eyes.

Henry closed the door, and felt his exhaustion and extreme drunkenness hit him. He looked at the stairs to his right, and decided against trying to walk down them. He then walked right into your open bedroom, and looked around. He had never really gotten a good look at your bedroom before, but he absolutely adored the way it was decorated.

You had done everything in your power to make it look comfy. You had faerie lights all over, as well as LED’s on the ceiling trim. You had a small sofa with various throw pillows and multiple comfortable blankets on it. You had a huge fluffy rug on the floor, and your bed had a insanely comfortable comforter, and a good 7 or 8 pillows on it, mostly throw pillows.

Henry pulled the throw pillows off the bed, and tossed them onto the couch, before climbing in. He was instantly overwhelmed by your scent. It was in your pillows, your comforter, even your stuffed elephant named Bubbles that you slept with every night. He hopped out of your bed once more, and brought Bubbles over to you, placing her under your arm and against your face. He went back to your room, and climbed in your bed, and fell asleep wishing you were in his arms.

The next morning, Henry’s body jerked awake at 5 am, and he knew he wouldn’t be able to fall asleep. He limbed out of your bed, before remaking it, and walking over to check on you. Kal jumped off the bed at the sight of Henry, and allowed him to come closer. He stopped at Henry’s feet and pressed himself against his legs, which signified he wanted some love.

Henry squatted own, and gave his fluffy boy some pets, and hugged him back when kal crawled in between his legs and rested his head on his shoulder. Henry chuckled.

“It’s gonna be fine buddy. Daddy’s gonna make it up to her, and maybe she’ll even agree to being your Mommy.” He said, and Kal licked his face before walking out of the room. Henry walked over, and climbed in beside you. He pulled you, into his arms, and pressed a gentle kiss to your forehead. You stirred, and tried to pull away from him when your eyes focused on his face, but he was too strong.

“I am so fucking sorry.” He whispered, and you said nothing as you buried your face in his neck, tears coming to your eyes. “I don’t know what I was thinking. I just, I was drunk, and in love with you, but I thought I couldn’t have you. I saw you with that other guy, and I just got so jealous. I wasn’t thinking straight, and I didn’t stop her. But, I should have.” He whispered, tears present in his voice as well. “Actually,” He said, pulling you closer and running a hand through your hair when he felt tears land on his neck. “I should have told you how I felt years ago. I should have told you how much I was drawn to you, and how much of my mind you occupy when I asked you to move in. I should have been honest the whole time, and I wasn’t. I am so fucking sorry, and I will spend the rest of my life making it up to you, if you just give me a chance to show you how much I love you. Please,” He begged, and you slowly nodded.

Henry’s heart exploded into fireworks. He pulled you close against his chest, and ran his hand up and down your back. Henry continued to talk to you, but you drowned it out as you were lulled to sleep by his scent, voice, warmth, and love.

You didn’t forgive him yet, and he didn’t expect you to. But, he loved you, you loved him, and most importantly he was sorry, and you’d knew he’d spend the rest of his life proving that to you.
