DVD Bonus Features: Fanfic Edition!
I have like 6k of cut scenes from my last fic (the fourth dimension) and many of them were not cut because they were bad, but because they weren't working with the overall story. Seems a shame to let them languish on Google docs. So, for anyone who might be interested - here's two scenes that didn't make the final cut!
<<<>>>
The hourglass is broken.
The glass is intact, of course, as is the intricate brass housing Dream had spent so many hours bending and curving into symmetrical spirals. It is the spring plate that forms one of the bases—designed to depress slowly as the weight of sand gathers, thereby stretching a miniature steel coil beneath such that it begins to draw back a tiny gilt hammer. When the full weight of sand is upon it, the catch releases, and the hammer strikes the chime.
Dream had left the mechanism skeletonized, proud of both the ingenuity and the beauty of the gears he had crafted. This is what allows him to see, today, that even though the sand piles upon the spring plate, the hammer remains stationary. The plate is not depressing.
He has migrated to the window for better light and turned the hourglass every which way. The symmetry of the hourglass means that an identical mechanism exists on the other side, for convenient comparison, and it is from this that Dream is hypothesizing that the issue is perhaps with the pinion gear.
He will not know for certain until he attempts correction.
And herein lies the problem, for in a masterful stroke of arrogance on his own part:
The glass is intact.
His only options now to access the mechanism are to melt the glass, or strategically break it apart, and in either case hope for both minimal damage to the contents and an aesthetically pleasing repair following the—
“What’s wrong, dove?”
Or rather, what Hob actually says is hǒu is th' problem, culver?, because Dream is standing in the kitchen next to an abandoned bowl of muesli, because it is breakfast, because during breakfast they speak Middle English. Hob is before him, coffee in one hand, breakfast sandwich in the other.
“It’s broken,” Dream replies. Is brokæ.
“It’s nearly eight,” Hob replies, eyebrows up.
Dream abruptly sets the hourglass down.
“So you noticed the Astrid Alarm was broken,” Hob says, as Dream swings the freezer door open and starts shifting ice packs and frozen pizzas about. “And then you didn’t set a different alarm. You didn’t eat your breakfast. You didn’t pack your bag.”
“This is unhelpful.”
Hob goes quiet as Dream frantically stuffs notebooks into his backpack, then a water bottle (too light, probably empty), the peas, headphones, and a sweater from the back of a chair that is likely not his own. Three binder clips go into his pocket. All he needs is—
He turns to find Hob waiting, Dream’s wallet in one hand, sandwich in the other, meat now removed.
Dream accepts both, and heads for the windowsill.
“No kiss?” Hob complains.
The broken hourglass, too, goes into his bag.
Dream doubles back, cups the side of Hob’s face more for the sake of injury prevention than tenderness, and presses a quick kiss of gratitude where it belongs.
The hand on his wrist stays him.
Hob’s fingers fall comfortably between the three watch bands that lie there, his thumb over Dream’s pulse point.
“Tonight, five o’clock,” Hob reminds him.
Dream holds up his other arm in reply, where a fourth watch glints golden.
“Ah, perfect,” Hob says, beaming. “Hob Fob to the rescue.”
It is one of the many great failures of Dream’s life, that this nickname has persisted.
“Five,” Dream agrees, and pulls his hand free. “You will be wonderful.”
“Best in my age group,” Hob agrees proudly, and raises his coffee mug just as Dream turns around to make for the door. The mug is a custom job from the internet a few years ago, chipped in both paint and porcelain, but the original black with white lettering can still be read:
It does not belong to Hob.
WORLD’S
LEAST
PUNCTUAL
WATCHMAKER
<<<>>>
(Originally there was an OC named Astrid that Dream would birdwatch with every morning, and Hob had a piano recital in the evening. Obviously these plot points went, and so the breakfast scene had to be rewritten.)
<<<>>>
A watch does not know the time it tells.
It cannot feel the sun moving across the sky. It does not know the axis of the Earth, nor the ellipsis of its orbit. It does not reach into the fabric of the universe and pluck divine truth from the red-shift coefficient of the galaxies that hurtle through space as afterthought projectiles of the origin of existence.
A watch begins with a mainspring—or perhaps a quartz crystal, or microscopic solar panels—but traditionally, a mainspring. This is where the potential energy is stored, to be released as the kinetic energy that will drive the gears to turn the escapement, which is what moves the hands of the watch forward, and would do so without rhythm or reason were it not for the staying hands of the balance wheel.
The balance wheel is the best part of a watch. The most precise. The most expensive, for the precious gems encrusted upon it that almost entirely eliminate the enemy of constancy: friction. It is what decides the length of a second, for it is what checks the urgency of the marching army of gears that say go go go go go and instead says no. It says, stop. For one thousand milliseconds or one million microseconds or one trillion picoseconds, it holds the entire watch in perfect stillness.
Then the second hand ticks over. The next interval begins.
On, and on, and on, and on, it goes.
<<<>>>
A watch does not know the time it tells. It is a mindless contraption, a work of metal and stone and glass, and it grinds inexorably forward with a steady tick, tick, tick, tick, tick that may at first listen sound like the drumbeats of progress. But listen closer. Listen carefully.
It is not a ticking that you hear. It is one small gear, striking back against the machine, protesting, crying out again and again: wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
(I liked this little meditation on the nature of watches, but it's a few shades off from my central thesis, and in the end was not needed.)
And that's it! Alas, sometimes good pieces must be sacrificed in the name of a greater project.

@fireflywritesgt ok i read your tag on ch21 and i took that as a personal challenge (and then while I was writing this you dropped ch22 and THEN 23 and murdered me. but i'm back now. so)
Tumblr media
HELLO Ok fuck yeah hold on everybody take my hand. We’re theorizing about this chapter 🙏 spoilers thru ch23 below
Re: the tag: dare I hope the next story will be set in a similar time/place… i MUST ADMIT despite the significant broader cultural stigma of such a thing. I have often contemplated. Harry and Joe helping with providing socialized miniature healthcare 😭 (maybe to wherever Lorraine lives[?] or knows of?) and when I heard mention of a Tiny Town Hospital… one must wonder how this compares to a Giant Hospital, or to the barber surgeon dens that Joe has presumably had some frostbitten toes cut off at.
OTHER THINGS I’M SPECULATING ABOUT: “certainly, bandits were a problem a borrower occasionally had to face” 🤔 damn that's rough. I do love the sense that there are few overarching cultural norms, whether it's around marriage or language or so on. Everybody is kinda doing their own thing (including robbing each other oof).
I am also VEEEERRY curious about the implications of WHATEVER the tinies that are working in Tiny Town are doing. What kind of mechanized thing could be profitable from a lot of little guys pressing buttons? Or is it maybe not something physical they’re producing? Is it instead a research project? Some attempt at “civilizing” the tiny society for giant colonialism reasons? There’s got to be some kind of output here that is valuable to some kind of giant, but I’m still mystified at what it will be. “Joe wanted to ask him about the four armed giants who stood outside of Tiny Town” YEAH MAN ME TOO‼️ <- secretly delighted this is still coming up because I want to know what it means QUITE BADLY
Joe lamenting that there don't seem to be any libraries, or restaurants, or speakeasies, or any mark of ... art or entertainment? In Tiny Town? I REALLY HOPE Joe and Harry get over themselves and kiss soon so they can TALK ABOUT HOW FUCKING WEIRD THIS PLACE IS???? It made me INSAAANE THAT JOE JUST BRUSHED OFF TALKING ABOUT IT AT ALL 😭 JOE TO HAVE THOSE THINGS. PEOPLE HAVE TO WORK AT THEM. ARE ALL THE PEOPLE IN TINY TOWN JUST WORKING ON PUSHING BUTTONS??? JOE PLS
“Expecting handouts from the bloody giants…” sooo fascinating to hear him voice this, since this whole project is a handout in the absolute best case scenario (given that scraps are worthless to giants), although likely closer to a prison, as Professor Hill called it. Still patiently waiting for his smart and cool wife to explain things to me <3
I hope Joe will deign to really talk about what happened to him… GURL go process it with ur beautiful best friend!! Let him hold you and comfort you and tell you you’re literally so smart and correct and everything you’re saying about ditching the buttons part entirely is literally so beautiful and true!!! Go rock his world with your insights king!!!
Also lmfao Joe is definitely not Irish bcuz his Irish Goodbyes need some SERIOUS work. King of just literally running off when he’s not feeling a conversation anymore.
Me 🤝Joe <- autistically just leaving
He does this so often and it makes me cackle every time. Wait hold on those great meme posts make me want to make a JUST WALK OUT! One.
Tumblr media
Absolutely loving the tension of it all… the reveal that Joe was doing watchmaking when he was TWELVE, meaning (if I'm keeping track of time correctly) he got snatched right after he was ABANDONED BY HIS ONLY FAMILY IN THE WORLD, was so artfully done. I had to stop in my tracks and think at the “he’d known O’Grady longer in his life than he hadn’t” and do math and be like “oh fuck.” Maybe this was teased prior and I didn’t pick up on it, but it hit HARD. For some reason I hadn’t assumed he was a kid — but why wouldn’t he be? If little kids are already doing things like crawling into discarded beer bottles. Fuck, Warren, heartbreaking stuff. Bravo. Of course Joe would be as dedicated to going and seeing him as he was Harry in the hospital. He cares so deeply about everyone, but especially his friends. It’s too bad O’Grady is no longer in a place to reciprocate the love Joe gives !!! But of course Joe still would not be ready to throw away the boot knife O’Grady made for him… “a decision that would forever change Joe’s life” btw I can hear ur evil hehe from here. :)
Also btw THIS little detail is one of those things that makes rereading your story so delightful: “They invade our end of the city, take our jobs, show up at our bar… did we invite them? No.” O’Grady was practically ranting. “And when we politely tell them to leave, what do they do?” O’Grady pointed to his bandaged head. “Watch out for them once you get here. They’re not good Irishmen like you and me, Joe.” juxtaposed with the actual breaking news we heard from the radio ? "“AN IRISHMAN AND AN ITALIAN ARE IN THE HOSPITAL AFTER A MASS BRAWL OUTSIDE A BAR ENDED IN A CRACKED SKULL AND A STABBING. NEITHER OF ‘EM HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED YET.”" a fucking STABBING = "politely tell them to leave"? What kinds of things has Joe's friend gotten used to excusing?
And of course I love the moments of solidarity within the tragedy of the newly realized (or at least newly stoked) xenophobia between borrowers. Joe being reminded of how his parents spoke, and how his brother shooed him off, in the gestures of a stranger… you really do a great job of evoking the ways we are all connected to each other. His family is gone, but he still sees them everywhere he looks. [pacing my enclosure and being sooo normal about how Joe has purposefully isolated for a decade and yet cannot help but see the beauty and humanity of his fellow man whether tiny or giant bcuz despite thinking he’s wired wrong, he’s actually wired like all of us who have felt that way for our unusual proclivities. He’s wired for connection with his fellow man. And he’s so wired for it u can feel how much it hurts his heart. Haha I’m sooooo .] The older guy was trying to warn him off crossing a white line into the “Irish ward”, too, right? The gesture was a kindness. And speaking of, does that mean the little tunnel somebody dug is to the Irish district? Or was I turned around and it was the Italian one? Either way — who would be trying to get in here, and why? Maybe it’s just a desperate person, but O’Grady talking about how bad it’d be if they saw Joe, and the need for an ID, makes me think it’s not someplace you can sneak into and integrate with. Just makes me curious as to whether it’ll come up again!!
THIS is also something I'm wondering about -- could the 'output' of Tiny Town maybe be researching, like... ethnonationalism? In the wake of WWI? Those drawn lines separating different 'wards'... do we think Tinies came up with this shit on their own? I doubt it, if someone like Dawson who is immediately assigning people nationalities that we know from Calloway's nobody "normal" in borrower society knows/cares about. HMMMmmmmMMMMM. I'm still reaaaaally curious how much Hill knows about this place and what hand, if any, he had in it. ONCE AGAIN, boys get kissing so you can also get TALKING. I think Harry would have much to say about how pointless it is to hate individuals from other nationalities after everything he saw during the war. Or so I assume, given he had no bad reaction to Joe being Italian.
AND WELL THIS IS LESS THEORYCRAFTING AND MORE “ME WANTING TO WRITE MORE FANFIC ABOUT THEM” BUT I WAS SOOO DELIGHTED THE CHAPTER DIDN’T END WITH HIM LEAVING TINY TOWN AND WE INSTEAD GOT DRESS REHEARSAL 2 OF HARRY AND JOE GETTING SO FUCKING DOWN BAD FOR EACH OTHER AT THE WINDOW & IN THE BEDROOM. YIPPEEEEE <- this was written before ch22 lol pictures taken moments before disaster
“Joe fidgeted for a moment as he fought with himself over whether or not to say what he really wanted to say.” … did you say what you really wanted to, there, pal? 🤨
I'm sooooo glad Joe's books are making more and more appearances... much like Harry I'm endlessly delighted by his culture. I wanna know what shaped his romantic fantasies!!
""Yeah, the ending on this one isn't great. They're cowards. Could've at least said they loved each other." Joe said.
He closed the book and snuggled into the crook of Harry's neck." <- Lmao @ these two guys so allergic to talking about their feelings shit-talking the romance book protagonists while they're literally cuddling in bed and not acknowledging it
Did he own these books when he was a kid? I imagine so, but on the other hand? HEY HOLY SHIT I REALIZED AFTER CH23 SOMETHING I SUSPECTED BUT COULDN'T CONFIRM: if homophobia isn't something borrowers have. Is one of these romance novels Joe owns going to be between two men? Harry is going to get his fuckin world rocked. Him and Georgie stole books from the library before, but I doubt they found any gay romance stuff (still impossible for baby-gay-Gnash to find that almost 100 years later in their rural libraries, lol.) Would this be Harry's first exposure to something like that? Wahhh... hurry up and open up to each other again you need to talk culture ASAP...
I'm also very curious if borrowers would have more taboo novels of their own, particularly giant/tiny stuff. And would Joe have come across any of it? I imagine it'd be extremely difficult to sell things like that without a beating, but maybe in bigger night markets -- and Joe said he's been in lots of very big cities... if his third novel is some really salacious g/t writing that would do numbers here on tumblr dot com I'm going to lose my god damn mind.

Natori has an appointment.
to go with my headcanon
Natori is in a bit of a hurry, but what's new?
He takes the few steps down to the shop, then he's through the door, leaving the street’s noise behind. Whatever comes with him is soundly dampened, sinking into upholstery and wood.
The maze of furniture has shifted, even from last week. A sign of good business, right? Today, it's a hard right toward the familiar sound of the radio skipping in and out of frequency. Being just below ground level has more of an effect than he would expect.
The sights are new as Natori makes his way through. A set of high-backed dining chairs. Ornately carved end tables. A slightly imposing, towering armoire. Miraculously dust-free as usual, the low light catches on the polished wood.
In contrast, the wide plank of the floor has long since lost its varnished shine, its creaks and groans. The past couple of times Natori was here, Mori-san mentioned that it would soon need to be redone or replaced. Natori thinks it a shame but can understand the danger of old wood in a place like this, with glass cabinetry and ancient furniture.
Still, not yet, as these kinds of projects go. Time will tell, he’d said, and the irony is hardly lost here.
Natori ducks through the chandeliers. Brushing by the hanging crystals sets off a soft, tinkling song. Near the back of the shop, things start to shrink. After all, they must fit neatly into glass cases and displays, along narrow velvet-lined shelves.
“Natori-san. Just in time.”
The small, charming thought takes root in his mind. “A pun?”
The watchmaker’s smile is always easily given, and his response is playfully rueful. “I don’t think I, of all people, have any right to deny it.”
Natori laughs.
Antique furniture evaluation and restoration, watch and jewelry repair too. Natori suspects that Mori-san wears many hats as he has yet to meet his business partner.
He’s honored that Natori thinks so but says he’s happier dealing with the fine and finicky. With hooks, eyes, and chains. With miniature mechanism and tiny ticking gears. Better him than Natori, who would sooner lose patience with such little things.
An offer of tea is made though he has come to expect Natori’s answer.
“Unfortunately, I’ve got to run.”
“Keeping busy as usual.” Mori-san nods approvingly, then brightens. “That reminds me, I’ve just seen your latest drama!”
In short order, Natori’s modesty and a slight embarrassment flare up and Mori-san heeds none of it, going on to highlight all his favorite parts. Natori can only let his enthusiasm wash over him and finds that he is comfortable.
There are some vague stresses in the leather band that Mori-san diligently points out. Nothing major yet, no worries. Simply something to keep in mind for the future. Everything else is running just fine.
“So, there we are.” Natori’s left wrist regains the familiar weight. He’s missed it.
“Thank you, it’s always good to see you.”
“And to have your watch back, of course.”
“Only since you do such a good job.” And so, Mori-san is summarily humbled and they are even.
He doesn’t have much more time to linger so he retraces his path back to the front. The chandeliers sing their goodbye and the doorbell chimes its farewell.
Until next time, they say.
Natori looks forward to it.

Horology? Watchmaking's a curious art. I feel like you would know how to do it, Ed boy. Miniature works of engineering, all to conserve space and time. My eyes wouldn't be good enough for such delicate motions, I'm sure.

Creationists: If evolution was real, it would be like a blind watchmaker building a perfect Swiss movement by feel a hundred times over. Clearly, it's made up.
Biologists: Evolution is real and it's like a blind-drunk Star Trek miniature designer kitbashing an entire alien fleet out of an Airfix Spitfire, two French pre-dreadnoughts and a desk-model of a Stirling engine on the evening before the episode is being shot. I wish I was making this up.
You ever think about how weird hippos are ecologically speaking?
There's literally no other megafauna on earth that spends the entire day lounging around in water, mostly just socializing, only to come onto land to feed at night.
I remember when I used to do education programs on hippos, most people assumed they ate aquatic plants, and that that's the whole reason they were in water. Meanwhile, hippos are basically just giant nocturnal cows that eat only grass.

BioArt: When Yeast Became Leonardo da Vinci and Bacteria Went Viral on TikTok
BioArt! A form of expression that practically screams, “Why settle for a boring old painting when you can watch mold bloom on a petri dish?” BioArt, for the uninitiated (looking at you, nose-in-the-phone crowd), is the art movement where artists toss brushes aside in favor of gene-editing tools, petri dishes, and entire bacterial colonies. This is art that’s alive—yes, you heard right, alive. BioArt uses living organisms—yeast, bacteria, fungi, even plants—as a medium. Just imagine your favorite celebrity on TikTok. Now, imagine if their latest ‘fit’ involved live moss and neon-colored fungi. Same level of commitment to shock value.
So, let’s roll up our sleeves, pop on our lab goggles, and dive into the mind-bending world of BioArt, where bacteria are the new Van Gogh and fungi get their five seconds of fame. This is the science of living media, dear students, and yes, that algae on the wall might just be a legitimate art installation.
Now, picture this: You stroll into a gallery, maybe you’re expecting a Picasso or two, maybe a splash of Monet. But instead, you find E. coli carefully painted onto an agar plate in rainbow hues, spelling out something vaguely philosophical about human nature or maybe just the artist’s Wi-Fi password. Welcome to BioArt, where you’re just as likely to see a plant that responds to human touch as you are a mural, and yes, that plant might be rigged to slap your hand away if you get too grabby. Don’t be offended—it’s just a little artful sass.
Take the BioArtist Oron Catts, for instance. This man doesn't “paint” with colors; he sculpts with cells. In one of his exhibits, Victimless Leather, he grew a miniature leather jacket out of living cells—no cows harmed, just a stylish bit of lab-grown couture. Imagine that: a jacket that’s alive but can’t, you know, be worn. It’s a paradox for the ages! Call it wearable art, but only if you’re okay with a slimy jacket that’s both a fashion statement and a biological hazard. And Catts is just the tip of this peculiar iceberg.
If you’re wondering if there’s a point to this madness, well, besides wowing Instagram followers, BioArt dares to ask life’s biggest questions: What does it mean to create with life itself? How much bacteria is too much bacteria? Will a fungus ever surpass the Mona Lisa’s mystery? I know, all this is super relatable, right? You’re welcome.
Now, moving on from the spectacle of it all, let’s chat about the science. You didn’t think this art form could be all fun and games, did you? Oh no, BioArt treads precariously close to the world of bioengineering. Some of these artists, in their lab coats and latex gloves, are more scientist than painter. They manipulate genetic codes as deftly as you edit captions. With CRISPR, the go-to genetic editor of our era, artists are now not just growing cells, they’re customizing them like it’s a Build-A-Bear Workshop for microbiology.
Picture CRISPR as a pair of those impossibly fancy tweezers (like the kind your roommate stole from your bathroom)—it allows scientists and artists to snip and swap DNA with the kind of precision that’d make a watchmaker blush. Now, in the right hands, CRISPR could be used to, I don’t know, cure genetic diseases. But in the hands of BioArtists? It’s used to grow neon-green fish, bioluminescent plants, and, if we’re lucky, something that glows in the dark with a message that says, “Look, Mom, I’m art!”
Yet, as with all things that push the boundaries of “normal,” BioArt is not without its critics. Some ask—aloud, usually, with a finger-wag—whether it’s ethical to use living organisms as canvas and clay. After all, if that moss could speak, would it thank the artist or demand royalties? And what about bacteria? One rogue E. coli in the wrong place, and suddenly your avant-garde exhibit becomes a public health incident. So yes, there’s a bit of a “mad scientist” vibe here. But isn’t that the price we pay for progress, darling? For every Mona Lisa, there must be at least one fungal sculpture that looks suspiciously like it has a life of its own. Balance in all things, right?
But before you go thinking BioArt is just a reckless hobby for lab junkies, let’s get philosophical. (Yes, philosophy—it’s required in any vaguely academic discussion, so buckle up.) These artworks challenge everything we know about art as a static, final product. BioArt literally grows and evolves. That petri dish masterpiece? It might look entirely different by the time you’ve put it on your TikTok feed. Imagine an art piece that defies selfies, that rebels against permanence, that transforms overnight, like that bad bleach job you got at 2 a.m. but with a bit more finesse.
And speaking of living art, let’s not ignore the high-tech “plants as art” phenomenon. A little light genetic engineering, a splash of biotech, and voilà! You’ve got a plant that plays music when you touch it, or one that blinks in Morse code (that one might be saying “water me”). Botanists are turning into artists, and artists are wielding plant DNA like watercolor paints. And hey, with AI and robotics thrown into the mix, it’s only a matter of time before we have “smart plants” that post their own selfies. Just imagine: a cactus with an Instagram page more active than your own. Pure genius, or ultimate existential crisis?
And here’s where things get wild—because BioArt is like that one weird dream you had after watching Stranger Things and downing too much caffeine. Imagine you’re in a world where bacteria become the Banksy of the lab scene, where petri dishes showcase art exhibits about life, death, and whatever lies in between. When art meets science, it’s like The Avengers—epic, a little messy, and with enough philosophical implications to fill a semester of ethics classes.
This fusion of science and art is no small feat. On one hand, we’re using the very tools that might one day cure diseases to create art that, quite literally, rots before your eyes. Is it morbid? Sure. But isn’t it also magnificent, in a way? Like that banana taped to the wall that sold for $120,000, BioArt raises questions—most of which you’ll avoid answering, because it’s easier to just look at the glowing algae and say, “Cool.”
And as for the future? Buckle up, because with CRISPR and other biotech marvels, tomorrow’s BioArt may feature hybrid organisms that haven’t even been invented yet. We could be looking at glowing blue plants designed to light up your living room (who needs lamps?), or bacteria programmed to spell out your name. Maybe you’ll be able to custom-order your own “mini-ecosystem” artwork. Or perhaps there will be a world where artists create petri dish paintings that sing karaoke or perform Shakespeare in yeasty choruses. Art is getting weird, people, and BioArt is at the cutting edge—or should I say, the pipette’s tip.
So, if you’re ever in a gallery and find yourself faced with a bizarre greenish blob that’s bubbling mysteriously, go ahead, look closer. It might be the next Mona Lisa—or at least something weird enough to go viral. And remember, in the world of BioArt, the rules are as alive and unpredictable as the art itself.
