i can’t explain how much i am loving the way things are progressing in minato shoji coin laundry season 2. the way both minato and shin are coming to understand each other better, and how to understand each other, be themselves and yet be willing to change and grow for each other. and this ep showed it so well, how minato is slowly being more active in the relationship, asking shin to go to the festival, taking his hand on the beach, even just telling shin to make breakfast, something he used to begrudge him doing. he’s learning how to let shin in, and contribute to their relationship, while still keeping his boundaries and moving at a pace that is comfortable to him, and he knows now how to refuse shin in a way that isn’t hurtful or just shuts him down completely, he knows how to joke about it, how to leave some leeway but still stand firm. and shin is beginning to learn that minato’s refusal is not bc he doesn’t like him, he’s learning that minato just has a different pace to him and he has to respect that. starting a relationship isn’t 0 to 100, you don’t just do all the things straight away, and that’s not a bad thing bc the journey is something to enjoy together. and yet shin isn’t compromising fully, he isn’t giving in, giving up on who he is just so minato is comfortable. he will still tease, he will still push, he will still take where he can bc minato needs to be pushed out his comfort zone sometimes to make progress, but it’s easier bc it never feels like a no, it feels like a not yet. they speak in very different languages to express their feelings and I love watching them learn each others language, watching minato take his hand at the beach as if to say sorry for what happened last time we were here, but I’m here now, and shin finding reassurance in that, which is why him letting go hurt him but ultimately lead to them understanding each other better. it’s just such a good depiction of how relationships don’t just happen, they’re made, and it’s just as fun and exciting to both experience for them and for us to watch.
#I’m so happy with how this series is panning out#and I didn’t even talk about shun and asuka and how their narrative works as a great parallel to shin and minato#agh it’s just so good and nice and there’s so much to it and it’s still just fun and easy and relaxing watching#that’s so hard to nail and so special#minato shoji coin laundry

This weeks episode was so cute, and they both looked so handsome.
They're still not communicating as much as I want, and I'm still so scared Akira's hesitance is gonna fuck things up, but they're trying.
You look amazing.

I'm rooting for ikki and Hikaru to be together so that the revice fandom will have a meltdown lol.
The description I read says they "develop a passionate relationship"... but are also "destined to have to kill each other". Make what you will of that, I guess?
Personally, I will be one of those people whose mind will explode if they go that route, because I'm honestly baffled that the BL vibes are so strong for this show.
Supposedly it's an adaptation of a manga written by Osamu Tezuka. You know, the same guy that wrote Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion? The mentor of Shotaro Ishinomori, the creator of Kamen Rider itself? Yeah, he's not exactly known to be a BL manga author, so one wonders what in the heck is going on that the adaptation has these vibes.
Not to mention Kentaro Maeda is not the first tokuboy Tomoya Oku would've been paired with- he starred in Minato Shouji's Coin Laundry as the love interest of the character plated by Yu Inaba- aka Shijima Go, the bicon himself. (Iirc he was actually on it while Revice was on air)
Also... Shoji Kohei (Takamichi/KirameiSilver) and Totaro (Tsubasa/InuBrother) are in this too lol. So it ain't just a Rider actor fest it be a toku actor fest. We literally just need someone from Ultraman to complete the trifecta
So... yeah, this show is just a bit insane and I'm here for it

i finished minato's laundromat a couple days ago and the age gap was really bothering me (but also the way shin would approach minato sometimes), and I really thought long and hard about my own prejudices and my own belief about what I think is right or wrong.
As someone who is almost 20, I can't help but think that I would feel weird if someone 10 years older than me was attracted to me and wanted to date me (in minato its the other way around but i'll get to that). That is because this person has had life experiences that I didn't, I changed a lot from when I was 17 to now when I'm 19, so I can't help but think that in 10 years I'll be a very different person. I also feel that this time (18-23) is when you'll learn and experience a lot, especially because of college or just the freedom that u have to experience things that you couldn't before.
But in Minato is not the older man that wants to date the younger man, is the other way around. That really paints a question for me, if it's the younger person that wants to date the older person, it's still weird? I mean you can argue that Shin knows what is that he wants and he is very mature for his age (as the BL show us that in some ways he is more mature than Minato), but you can also argue that he is mature in the circumstances he was brought up.
Shin is a boy from a small town, he grew up in a place where people know each other and nothing really happens (I mean the biggest thing we see in the BL happening in this place is that thief). He is the oldest of his family and he takes a parental role when it comes to taking care of his younger siblings, which certainly helps him to mature faster than other teens his age. But Shin doesn't have any friends that we know of, he is not want talkative in school and for what we saw the most outside influence he had came from Minato (who lived in Tokyo for years and had experiences that only connection with different people brings you).
As I was watching the BL, I was actually they would have a time jump to Shin getting back from college and then they getting together. I think that this would be a satisfactory ending, because it would show that, even after Shin experienced life by himself, he still loves Minato and he wants to be with him to, now, experience things with him. They even gave us this option with Minato saying he would wait for Shin, but they decided to take the other route which wasn't bad by any means.
I'm just rambling rn but even now I don't really know how I feel about this story. The post really helped me to gather a few of my thoughts, but I feel very conflicted (especially after reading the manga and realizing I was so bored I couldn't continue) and ig this means I'll be rewatching it with a more open mind and now aware of the shows intentions.
Hey there! I get most of my bl recs from this blog, and I was reading through your Minato's Laundromat watch along post. I was going to watch it but the age gap really messes me up? In Old Fashion Cupcake they have a large age gap but they're still both adults. I suppose it's because of my own past, but a 17 year old with a 27 year old makes me uncomfortable. Would you be okay with the same age gap if it was irl, or only in fiction? Please take no offence to this question, btw, I'm trying to figure out if I should watch it or not.
Age Gap & BL - Taboo, Morality, Teenagers & Laundromats
Ooo, age gap. Well this might just be another JBL whips ABL into a verbal frenzy situation. You ready?
Age gap is one of those tropes that edges into taboo, so like the stepbrothers trope, you may have internalized trauma or cultural conditioning around it.
You may never be able to watch these kinds of BLs no matter what I say or what Japan does about it. And that’s fine! Please know your own limits.
Some of us have baggage around childhood, and allowing children to be children, and adults interfacing with children, and age of consent, and sexual awakening and maturity.
But it means to talk about the romantic and erotic nature of an age gap romance, we gotta talk about culture for a moment.
When does a child become an adult?
Certain cultures have a more fixed age of consent than others. Japan’s, as I talk about in my Coin watch along post, is more flexible than the USA, for example.
Anthropologically speaking, this is something to examine about yourself. What constitutes “growing up” to you?
Is it a fixed line you cross (like a birthday) - what we would call ascribed status, or is is a thing you earn = achieved status? Is it wisdom or education?
In some places, it’s the moment a biological woman gets her period or after a biological man’s voice breaks.
In others, it’s the moment she puts on a head scarf or lengthens her skirt.
It’s the moment he kills his first big game or weaves feathers into his hair.
In some places, it centers around controlling procreation and the feminine.
In others, it is about protection and the fear of youth being exploited.
In others, it’s about a transition from one role in the group to another new role in society.
Everywhere it is about crossing a threshold.
How big is that threshold, how wide that line? How much time does it occupy in our cultural consciousness? This is what teen’s grapple with. That liminal space between childhood and adulthood. How frustrating to have to exist there. How necessary to form cohesive identity. How do they know, how do we know, when they have crossed through and come out the other side?
Who decides this for you? Who decides this ABOUT you? The government? The legal system? The family unit? Yourself? Your religion? A big fuck-off party?
Why 18? Why 21? Why can 18 not fuck 17 but can fuck 21? Did you feel ready to date, to have sex, when you were 18? Or were you ready before that, after, never? Is sexuality even really an indication of adultness to you?
Would I be okay with the same age gap if it was irl, or only in fiction?
My personal perspective:
I’ve talked about this before but I came into sexual identity and desire very early, but I didn’t really date or have sex until comparatively late, and it took me longer than that to unearth my own kinks and queerness.
My parents were very permissive and I knew how to be safe and so I could have done anything I wanted to, probubly from 14 on, which is one of the reasons I didn’t.
I’ve dated up to 10 years older, and over 10 years younger, but always individuals who were qualified as legal adults by any standards.
I do think there are plenty of people too young for sex, by any definition. Certainly plenty of 18 year olds too young for it.
I am personally squicked out by the idea of engaging in any level of intimacy with much younger lovers at this point in my life. It seems like too much work and boring and also a little gross.
But I also believe in giving children responsibility, discipline, autonomy, freedom, and high functioning tasks. I do not agree with helicopter parenting or infantilization. I had my first job when I was 10. Outside the home. I liked it. I learned a lot. I traveled internationally alone for the first time when I was 8. This skews my perspective on what it means to be mature.
Would I be okay with 17 + 27 IRL?
Probubly not but it would depend on the power dynamic. If class, culture, finances, and/or gender made it clear the older person was calling all the shots while being in the position of power, I would be highly uncomfortable. I might even interfere. (If there’s a sugar daddy relationship going on I would probubly make inquiries as to the nature of the contract, and that the younger sub understood their dynamic properly. In the D/s world I do think Dominants have a responsibility to oversee other Dominants for abuse patterns.)
In fiction, I am thinking of Alexis Hall’s For Real which is an excellent gay romance about a large age, wealth, life, experience, EVERYTHING gap where the Dom is a young college age kid and the sub is an established doctor. It’s brilliant and it tackles many of these things. I highly recommend it.
Fiction allows for a certain amount of suspension of disbelief. Also it allows us to see into intimacy in a way we ordinarily can’t outside of our own lives.
Shin is younger but he is also VERY MUCH the aggressor. He makes all the first moves. They have not kissed, at these ages, and I do not think they will.
I’m going to ask you a question.
How would this age dynamic make you feel if it were say: man 18 & woman 28, and he’s a freshman in college and she’s in a comfortingly genderized service job, say waitress? How about if he is a young CEO and she’s his secretary?
Is part of the discomfort coming from the gayness? (Because in the west there is a long history of cultural association between gay & pedophile which is very insidious and his impacted the queer community quite severely, it may be acting on your subconscious.)
Is part of the discomfort coming from the life state? High School. Is leaving high school actually a conference of maturity, or just a societal excuse we westerners use to sluff off our filial responsibility to our youth?
Is it all about the fixed age? Is there really that a big a jump between 17 and 18 or does it just make us feel better because certain laws say 18 = adult?
It’s worth making yourself uncomfortable with thought experiments around this dynamic to try to understand why you feel this way. After all, you gave me a thought experiment, I’m just returning the favor.
But honestly this is part of Coin’s point. To make you think about what it means to be adult and mature. To make you uncomfortable as a watcher.
Cupcake versus Coin
Okay the interesting thing about comparing Old Fashion Cupcake (AKA Cupcake) to Minato’s Laundromat (AKA Coin) is that they are actually quite similar.
Younger seme by 10 years is the one doing the pursuing.
Older uke behaves in a childish and flirtatious manner as part of his personality.
Both semes are clearly sexually frustrated.
Both have pined for a decade.
Both narratives are from Japan.
But in Cupcake the age gap almost amusing. Especially to some of us. That the characters are even worried about this kind of age gap, at their age? It’s silly. Why?
Well, the age gap is there, but really these two are at the same life stage, so it’s not the driver of the story. Emotional maturity is. Learning how to love and appreciate yourself (and what time has beaten you into) so you can be open to affection and sensation and life. Togawa is defined by his willingness to participate in all the world has to offer - those HAMSTER cheeks, are a way of showing his unconsciousness indulgence in sensation. While Nozue is defined by his careful withdrawal, his unwillingness to participate, to take risks, and his own self-hatred and sadness because he KNOWS, he is mature enough to realize, that he did this to himself.
Neither Minato nor Shin are mature in this regard. Both characters are not self aware. Both characters lack emotional IQ. Shin is incapable of teaching Minato how to open himself back up to affection, because Shin does not have enough life experience to empathize with why Minato ran away and shut down in the first place.
Shin is too young. He thinks he would never run. He thinks love is the answer. He thinks love is enough.
It’s never is.
Minato’s Laundromat is a high school student paired with a grown (if immature) man. Same character dynamics as Cupcake. Same age gap as Cupcake. But this narrative must face its age gap head on. And that’s why it’s making people uncomfortable.
Japan is using to Coin tackle notions of maturity but not just sexual awakening and desire, but how maturity translates to emotional intelligence and ownership of self.
Both characters are mature in certain ways.
Shin is the eldest of a large family, he’s basically raised his siblings, he’s taught himself to cook, he’s driven in his studies, he wants to become a doctor. He knows how to be a boyfriend, or he thinks he does. He knows what he desires. He knows how to ask and he knows how to flirt. Shin knows who he is and what he wants and that is mature, but also he is performing the role of a seme as he thinks it’s supposed to be undertaken. He is acting the role of the boyfriend that he has read about in his comic books, it’s not (yet) natural to him, the way it is to Togawa. But he doens’t realize this because he’s too young.
Minato has two failed relationships behind him and a failed career. He knows what it is to hurt. He knows things don’t work out. He knows wanting a thing is not the same as having it and holding on. He has found his way to a kind of peace, and kind of inertia. Unlike Nozue, he is genuinely happy, he’s not at all lost, but he is hiding, and he is scared. But this he knows about himself. Minato is hiding that he is gay, he is acting in a way to fit back into his home, but at heart he is an open and honest person, naturally kind and gregarious, so he too is acting, performing a role, it’s just he knows it.
Both Cupcake and Coin are about bravery, but in the one case we have a clear model example of how to be brave, an end goal, and it is Togawa. In the other we have conflict over bravery, because it means something different when you are at different life stages.
Shin can be as brave as humanly possible, and he is constantly putting himself out there, constantly asking and begging and pushing Minato to give in to their desires. But while that may be a model of courage, it is not safe for Minato. Minato’s bravery is in resisting. Is in not giving in. And it will eventually be in hurting Shin to drive him away. Even lying to Shin about his feelings.
Shin cannot be trusted because he is too young. For no other reason. The age gap is the problem because of life experience. This story isn’t really about whether it’s “okay” for them to sleep together because that is just not going to happen, no matter what Shin thinks. And any perceptive watcher with know this. (Also this is not dark JBL, dark JBL would have gone there.)
Minato may be immature but he has a fixed moral compass. This story isn’t about that or sacrificing self for desire, those kinds of discourses are left to the older BLs and noona romances, Japan has already tackled it. They’re moving on.
Shin can only be brave, it’s all he knows to try. He cannot be patient. He cannot give up. Minato can only be a coward, it’s all he’s ever been. His only experience is in taking a risk and hurting himself, or taking a risk by betraying his own identity and hurting others.
Minato sees only one outcome: hurt, either his pain or Shin’s. His maturity will be in realizing that the right thing to do will hurt both of them. But for now he remains in limbo, unable to lie and say “I don’t want Shin,” because he is an honest person and he does want Shin.
But also unable to say yes because everything in him is screaming that even if it were right, this is the wrong time. Shin is, by any measure, too young. Minato’s instinct is to run, but he has already run to his hometown and laundromat for safety. And now Shin is challenging him in that space too.
This is what makes this show so tense. We know Minato will not crumble, but the challenge is constant and it is real. And it makes us all, including Minato and Shin, feel unsafe.
Shin is making Minato’s place of refuge unsafe. Minato has nowhere else to go. That’s why this show it titled the way it is.
The laundromat is being used as a metaphor for Minato’s life state.
That’s why each ep always opens and closes on the laundromat. That’s why Shin in ALWAYS depicted in doorways. Between inside and out, one room and another.
Shin is shown coming inside Minato’s spaces.
Shin is desperate to be invited into Minato’s home.
Minato goes outside the building to confront Shin.
Shin waits on the threshold, fainting from heatstroke. Because... he cannot wait.
Because Shin is a teenager, his is in that liminal time of life. He is neither child nor adult. He is himself the spirit of transition. This series is using him occupying thresholds as a metaphor for his life state. He is both AT a threshold and IS a threshold.
Shin is in motion, trying to fit, trying to occupy Minato’s space. In and out of the doorways of Minato’s safe little life, his laundromat. Minato who is ahead of him, settled, hiding under blankets, tending to his machines, embraced by his community, home.
Shin thinks Minato is his home. Is his destination.
And the horror of this show is that there is a distinct possibility that Shin is right.
Minato knows this.
And so do we.
It’s just this is not the right time. Shin hasn’t had a journey yet. You can’t come home, if you never leave it. And you can’t appreciate it, if you never go. That’s the nature of growing up.
Shin may have found his nest. But is it his, if he never learned to fly?
So it is Minato we must trust not to make a mistake. Because Shin is absolutely going to. Shin has put Minato in the position of having to push him out of the nest and watch him fall. Watch him get hurt. Watch him fly away. Minato who actually wants to be the safety net, who saves children from drowning, who wants so desperately to be loved. Minato is going to have to act in a way that is not only disingenuous to his own character, but that he knows Shin will see as a betrayal. Minato is going to have to hope that Shin will go away and grow up and realize that such a betrayal was actually an act of love.
Wether you like this show will depend on whether you trust Minato to do that. Or trust the narrative.
So I can’t answer whether you should watch it yet, because i don’t know. I do trust it. But this is Japan, they always surprise me.

🎩Top Ten Shows of 2022🎩
I decided to make this post for fun.😜If you haven’t followed me all year then you may be surprised by my opinions here. This took me a long time to think about. Thank goodness for mdl. Also thanks bestie @gunsatthaphan for making the gifs for me so it’s not boring 🥺
Without further ado,
I couldn’t not give the number one spot to this show. It may have lagged in the middle, but by the end it was a 12/10 for me. JimmySea deliveredddddddddd. I loved it so much I bought their plushies.
This was the surprise of the year for me. I did not like Tae in Paint With Love so I was hesitant. I saw gifs all over my dashboard mostly courtesy of @laowen. I decided to give it a try, and it quickly rose up in the ranks for me. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoyed the feel of Manner of Death since it is by the same author. TaeTee had some amazing chemistry!!
Did this show have the best plot? No, it did not. What it lacked in it made up for in the three couples. All three couples were loveable and the cinematography was really nice. I have watched this show probably at least 4 times now. ZeeNunew are kings. They carried that show. I am so excited for Cutiepie 2 You. Also how can anyone hate Nat Natsit? He is so cute I just want to put him in my pocket.
I don’t know what it was about this show. I loved the main character so much. I was so excited each week to watch it. I would scour the internet looking for the episodes. Akira was so lovable and adorable.
I am most definitely in the minority here. This show had me dying of laughter the entire time. All the couples were adorable. BillySeng killed it with their chemistry. If you want to laugh then you need to watch this show. I watched episodes multiple times because it was so entertaining. The subtitles even explained all the inside jokes for me and that was just such a nice touch. 🥺
I was one of the few that preferred this show over Star In My Mind. Were Joongdunk adorable? Yes of course, but the story lost me and I was very irritated by the end. I identified with Fah’s character so much. I really liked FahPrince. They were so cute 😍
This show was so so so good! The chemistry was unmatched for a Korean bl. I was so impressed. The story was a great enemies to lovers trope. It was excellent! Jaeyoung was my crush of the year 🙈
I enjoyed the original. It was interesting, but this version was so real. They tackled the relationships and explained everything so well. I really felt what the characters were feeling. YinWar have an insane chemistry. I thoroughly enjoyed this one. VeeMark messy endgame 😝
I feel like this should have been higher purely based on how adorable all three couples were, but the plot was a little frustrating at times. It made it in to the top 10 though, They were all disgustingly sweet. ParkLee, 💣and 🐻, MekKim 💙
I was sooooooo against this show. I blocked the tag because I was so irritated by seeing it on my dashboard. Someone told me to just give it a chance and I ended up enjoying it. Was I as crazy about it as everyone else? The answer would be no. The action scenes and entire production as a whole were fantastic. I felt it deserved the last spot. I did not like VegasPete and never will. I am honestly here for Jeff Satur’s Kim being the badass protecting Porchay.
Honorable mentions: P.S I Hate You, Old Fashion Cupcake, Fukou-kun wa Kiss Suru Shikanai!, About Youth, First Love Again, Blueming and Happy Ending Romance.
Also Between Us, My School President, and Never Let Me Go need to be mentioned because they’re all my favs right now.

I know for sure that Shin and Minato will not end up together before Shin graduates from high school, which is obvious considering the way the story has been handled in the manga. Minato is in fact a rational person, so he will continue pushing Shin away, and I actually want that to happen. It makes perfect sense to me (and to Shin too). Shin being so deeply in love with Minato while knowing that he has to wait is actually what makes me incredibly invested in Minato Shoji Coin Laundry/Minato's Laundromat. But Shin being Shin, so straightforward and blunt and earnest, will continue expressing his love.
#minato's laundromat#minato shoji coin laundry#just some ramblings#I love this series so much#I have been collecting all the manga and novels (still waiting for some of them to ship)#the live action is literally a gift from heaven

BL Best of 2022 - quick picks
Best KBL: Semantic Error
Best Thai BL: Bad Buddy (remember for me this falls into 2022)
Best JBL: this was the hardest pick for me because Japan came back SWINGING this year. So... I cheated.
Best traditional live action yaoi? Minato’s Laundromat
Best modern BL? Takara & Amagi
Best for me, personally? Old Fashion Cupcake
Best Taiwan BL: My Tooth Your Love although I really adored DNA Says Love You and About Youth, the one fudged the beginning and the other the end (both are still v HEA) so My Tooth was the most consistent.
Best director: Kato Ayaka (Old Fashion Cupcake) she did a fucking phenomenal job, and yes she had two killer actors to work with, but I am such a sucker for those long shots plus the sensual foods close ups? GIIRLLLLLLLL. Gah!
Best kiss: honestly we had so many good kisses this year I have multiple blog posts going on the subject. But I am handing it over to the one that stuck in my head the most, Billy & Seng’s up against that chain gate with the damn blue towel sticking out of his back pocket in Secret Crush On You.
The desperation was just insane. But I might have given it to OFC if they hadn’t already won the director category. And I flipping LOVE the Kissable Lips boys BTS smiley kiss from 304: 100% should have been on screen for us.
Best erotic moment: The shower neck make out kiss from side couple RainPayu in Oh! My Sunshine night.
Runner up: VegasPete and the “ass to waist ratio” kiss in their kinky chain scene.
Best O scene: Oh the whole LITA special, they knew what they were doing. Doesn’t stop me being annoyed by the whole thing, tho.
Best cuddles: I mean it should got to 12% because, well, ENDLESSLY spectacular cuddles from SantaEarth but for me it was Star in My Mind’s cuddle+glare. I love me a vicious little “mine” moment.
Best eye contact/soulmating/eyefucking: FirstKhao in The Eclipse although Japan did great work with THIRST this year (bit more one sided, that one).
Best cinematography: Cherry Blossoms After Winter, I know, I know, but you know how I feel about yaoi, nostalgia and cinematic storytelling.
Best boohoo snot bubble I’m dazed and crying: Eternal Yesterday, every fucking episode, Choco Milk Shake (I hate you Strongberry, I love you Strongberry), To My Star 2 (I just hate you and you are not forgiven).
Most beloved character: Shin MY PRECIOUS BEAN SPROUT
Best Pair: The Parks although I am also crazy about the To My Star and Kissable Lips boys. I really want more from all of them. Madness that it’s all Korea.
Best Ensemble: The Eclipse had a killer cast but I expect that from GMMTV. So for all it was a mess of a story Cutie Pie wins best casting from me. All 3 couples had such good chemistry. I don’t think any other multi-couple shows out of Thailand were that on point, not even KP.
Best siblings//family: My Ride, gotta hand it to the gay uncles and all the queer friends and the adopted son. Although DNA Says Love You was pretty darn great too.
Best Food: There were so many food ones this year (Ocean Likes Me, Old Fashion Cupcake, La Cuisine, but none were as good food-wise as Bite Me last year) so the one where I actually wanted to eat stuff the most? What Zabb Man. What can I say? I love sweets and ramen, but Thai food is my last best hope in life.
Best song: Eternal Yesterday’s OST Sunshower by Ayumu Imazu. I can’t believe Japan beat out Korea but I am sorry I just really fucking adore that song. I’m sucker for that raw slightly rough voice combined with Japan’s brusque style (and PINK hair).
youtube
But Leo’s I still from Happy Ending Romance is a close fucking follow up, that boy is dripping slightly-evil honey even in falsetto, he’s a perennially ignored goddamn gift to Kpop.
I do A LOT of best of lists, this is just the beginning. Also if you have a request of a top 10 of 2022 or any best of... name the tope lists, let me know in an RP or a comment.

Top 5 BL of 2022
Idk I just wanted to do a wrap of this year. I watched 26 of the BLs that came out this year, which is not bad haha. Overall I like them a lot when they start but end up disappointed by the time they finish. There are some exceptions though.
#5 Minato Shoji Coin Laundry
What can I say, I like age gaps and I like when it's a feature of the plot. I also like Japan's particular brand of anguish and yearning.
#4 DNA Says Love You
I loved the progression and how they handled Amber and his journey. Soft and sweet, as I like it.
#3 Triage
Another joy of mine, time loops and time-related shenanigans. Love the inversion halfways through, though I think the ending was a bit dragged out and mean. They've suffered enough! But only happy endings make it to my top lists :)
#2 Semantic Error
A good old enemies-to-lovers, Chu Sang Woo my boy... Wished they had butted heads more at some points but overall this lil show is just perf.
#1 Old Fashion Cupcake
First I watched gifs of the kiss (and thumb) a million times. I love office romance and I love older protagonist, and the whole thing was so wholesome and hopeful. Idk it got to me.
Honorable mentions: Kabe Koji, Once Again, About Youth, Dear Doctor I'm Coming for Soul, Takara & Amagi, Not Me, Choco Milk Shake, Tinted With You.

Favorite BLs of 2022
I made myself stick to a top ten list, but I actually marked over 20 BLs from this year as my very favorites, so there are some shows I’m kind of shocked didn’t make it on here. What a great year! This isn’t a list of ‘best’ shows, so much as the ones that I think will stick with me and are in line with my personal tastes. This list is for shows that ended in 2022, and only includes Asian shows. I love character-driven shows with a bit of quiet breathing room and hidden depths, but at the same time I love love love paranormal romance and a wacky premise. I’m a sucker for food and long takes.
1. Old Fashion Cupcake - A show about how to keep growing as you grow older featuring lots of food and an amazing long take confession. Possibly my number one of all time. I’m still boggled I got a character older than me in a BL.
2. Semantic Error - All killer, no filler and my favorite take on opposites attract. I may have only taken one computer science class but Sangwoo just makes sense to me. It’s the only BL I’ve posted fanfic for so far.
3. To Sir, With Love - It’s not really fair to put it on this list since it’s not actually a BL, it’s the fun gay period drama I’ve been longing for. I loved the romance, but I really loved the whole cinnamon roll brigade (Tian, Yang and Pin).
4. Bad Buddy - The push-pull dynamic of the leads and the GL side couple pushed it ahead of the pack and I’m still stuck on the rooftop. There’s a lot of nostalgia here since it’s the first one I got the full fandom experience for.
5. DNA Says Love You - It’s about ghost hunters because Amber is metaphorically a ghost, ask me why. It rose in my estimation on rewatching and I just want to watch it again.
6. About Youth - This is my comfort show and it had some of the most mature characters of the year despite them being high schoolers. I probably should have cared that it felt like part of the show was missing, but I didn’t.
7. My Tooth For Your Love - A great relationship and so many plushies, mostly refreshing on the narrative level with some issues towards the end. Sitting on my hands to keep from buying all the tooth merch. 8. Ghost Host, Ghost House - A couple with amazing chemistry and a show with some unexpected depth to the fun ghostly shenanigans. Stay tuned to see if I finally convinced my non-BL watching bff to see this one.
9. Triage - One of the best time loop shows I’ve seen, featuring ‘I saved his life so many times I fell in love with him.’ It would probably be higher but I’m still annoyed about the distribution and haven’t rewatched.
10. Minato Shoji Coin Laundry - Shin was the cutest little bean sprout while also being an absolute thirsty menace, while Minato hung on for dear life. I remember even loving the way it sounded, which is rare for BL
