Throwing his bag on the neatly made hotel bed he hurriedly checked his watch. After a small delay at the airport, he still had enough time to make it. Quickly he unpacked and hung up anything that could get easily wrinkled. He kicked off his boots, slipped on a pair of loafers, and grabbed his worn-out blue chore coat before shutting the door behind him. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It was cooler out than he thought it was supposed to be and he was glad he packed an outer layer. The misty fog made it hard to see the end of the street. He could barely make out the two glowing circles that gradually grew larger as they neared. Glancing at his phone he hoped it was John in a white Nissan Pathfinder; four point seven stars. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The locals of New Orleans can tell if you're a visitor by the time you are done saying hello. Street names like "Tchoupitoulas" and "Chartres" clumsily fell out of his mouth and the gig was up. He appreciated John not correcting his poor pronunciation and they drove on through the heavy fog talking about how cold it had been in Chicago. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ They arrived at his destination on St. Claud Avenue and hopping out of the backseat he could hear laughter and music coming from the backyard of the dark building in front of him. He had never been here before but the recommendation for this sneaky weekend wine lounge came from a good friend who had yet to steer him wrong on New Orleans drinking spots. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ He walked through the short chain link gate and could see he was in the right place. Taking a seat at the outdoor bar he looked over the menu. Most places have a star or two hidden away on the wine list but this was an entire roster of gems. It was hard to choose and certainly no way to go wrong. In red neon cursive "BAR" glowed in the afternoon shade. Before pushing the door open he respectfully unrolled the sleeves of the striped blue Oxford down to his wrists concealing the faded lines inked into his skin. The humidity outside permitted a less formal approach but the small brass sign on the door clearly stated: "Proper Attire Required." It was the best he could do on such short notice. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ His eyes adjusted to the dark room and he was thankful for the conditioned air. A man was silently shucking oysters for a hungry couple at a small marble bar on his right. To his left, an older woman was behind an even older wooden bar stirring cocktails. He chuckled at the idea of having to choose between oysters or martinis and was glad that this wasn't a desert island situation-- he would be having both. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Sitting on one of the ancient stools he ordered a martini. She didn't ask how he wanted it aside from up or on the rocks. He could tell that she made more martinis in a month than he could drink in a year. When you meet someone like that you should always let them make it their way. You might learn something. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In a patinaed metal tin, she splashed a few drops of dry vermouth and then reached for Bombay Dry, the clear bottle, a perfect choice for a warm afternoon like this. After adding a few scoops of ice she stuck a long-handled spoon into the mixture and came back to ask how many oysters he wanted. A dozen to start seemed like the right call and she went back to stirring the potent liquid. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ She presented the finished drink in an old straight-sided cocktail glass with a small twist of lemon peel. Then she handed him a red chip with solid white letters that stated: "1 DOZ RAW OYSTERS" and on the other side "PASCAL'S MANALE RESTAURANT N.O., LA." Getting to the airport was easy. Elevator to sidewalk. Sidewalk to subway. Subway to airplane. It was a dance and he knew all the steps through repetition. He waltzed through his preferred security checkpoint and made it to the assigned gate in record time. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ He preferred a window seat if it was a short flight, like today, and he usually chalked the time up to daydreaming, which he never considered to be a waste. Longer flights found him in the aisle with room to stretch out and far enough away from the fluffy white distractions that populate the sky at 35,000 feet. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Being disconnected was nice. He never watched the movies and his large over-ear headphones sat at home next to the turntable where they belonged. His phone was in a leather bag over his head and his watch was carelessly ticking away to the wrong timezone. The hum of the plane was peaceful enough and it didn't distract him from catching up on a forgotten New Yorker. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Sitting in first class isn't about boarding before everyone else or the extra room. It is, however, all about having a gin and tonic in a real glass as opposed to the plastic cups used back in steerage. Some would argue that fact but he cared for arguing even less than plastic cups. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ His drink arrived clearer and fizzier than they do on the ground. Sharp lime and peppery juniper cut through the recycled air of the cabin and made his mouth water in anticipation. His seatmate was stirring a spoonful of sugar into a cup of black coffee.
