AYCF Chapter 14 ~ Character Introductions

So since I am just starting to outline Chapter 14 of AYCF, We get to meet some new faces, these 4 witches are Evelyn's friend group, and we will see them several times throughout the rest of the fic. I really wanted to give Evelyn some friends and have Caleb interact with more people besides just Evelyn.

Bio: Elentis's Older brother, Unlike his brother he is calm and level-headed, he acts like he doesn't care, but the opposite is true, he loves books and poetry and also loves history.

Bio: Jayce's Younger Brother, due to an acciedent he is hard at hearing in his left ear, He is the groups energetic, go getting prankseter, who loves plants and animals.

Streja Nimthil

Age: 17

Gender: Female

Orientation: Lesbian

Favored type of Magic: Bard and Abomination

Bio: Evelyn's best friend since they were babies, they practically grew up together, considers Evelyn her sister, and she will murder anyone who harms Evelyn. She is very standoffish and closed off. but once she gets to know someone, she will open up. She also has a birthmark around her eye.

Liene Furnival

Age: 15

Gender: Female

Orientation: Pan

Favored Magic: Healing

Bio: The Youngest of Evelyn's friend group, she is blind in her right eye. She is super supportive and the group's cheerleader, she is very upbeat but can be shy.

I just need everyone to know how much I love Roberta Cowell. I love her so much. I’m rereading her autobiography (Roberta Cowell’s Story) which has an introduction by A.R. Millbourn, (formerly) an active member of the British Catholic Church (he’s dead now). Millbourn was an active supporter of the trans community and shows the historical support of trans people before reactionary pundits decided to profit from hatred.

[Transcription: {Two or three years ago a writer in a medical journal, dealing with the subject of a sex-reversal, began by remarking that “the history of sex reversal, founded on speculative thought, may be judged best by the human passions it has provoked.” I realized plainly when the present book was first projected, and feel even more clearly on reading it now, that to arouse passions of any sort was about the last idea in the mind of the writer. Whatever purpose she had in mind from the first, and followed consistently, it was not that, as indeed her readers will perceive for themselves…

Cowell’s entire book is so genuine and lovely. She is incredibly witty and well spoken. She’s so good at explaining her experiences and her interactions with heteronormativity, gender roles, identity, etc.

I love her. She was so brave and smart. Also very pretty woman omg haiiiii

Anyways. I’ll probably have more to gush about as I continue my reread. Shout out to trans people. Very swag.

Minor Latent Defects characters: A group of men I refer to only metatexually as 'The Boys'. They all work in construction and related fields, and meet regularly at at a sports bar called Reilly's. These four only appear at Reilly's and not anywhere else in the story, hence 'minor'.

Gene is a 35-year-old HVAC contractor. He lives with his wife and two daughters in Millbourne. Stubborn and loyal, he enjoys ham radio and cooking with his wife. He fits in well with the group and is often a stabilizing force during conflicts. He finds Harry quite annoying (and he's right).

Harry, 24, is a construction laborer, probably a framer. He lives in South Philly, is Catholic, and is an intensely horny extrovert. He parties a lot and also crochets. He and Gareth have bonded on a superficial level, though he does not get Gareth's deal at all.

Brian is a 44-year-old Jewish electrical contractor based in Narberth. He seems low-maintenance and low-conflict, but only because he's repressing everything. The only person he's really honest with is his wife, Anita. He and Anita hike, and are swingers. He's closest to Luke out of the group, but views Harry as sort of a terrible nephew.

Rafael, 31, is the newest addition to the group. Another Catholic, he recently moved back to West Philly to take care of his grandmother. He's a laborer in the concrete industry. Luke started inviting him to stuff, but he's pretty anxious and still slooooowly deciding whether he likes any of these people.

The rest of The Boys are getting their own posts because they participate meaningfully in the plot. Stay tuned, I Guess.

It’s Fine Press Friday!

This week we present To Nature, poems by Edmund Blunden. The cover decorations and initial letters were designed by Randolph Schwabe. The typography and binding were arranged by Cyril William Beaumont and printed at his Beaumont Press in Westminster in 1923. It was the 16th book issued by the press and was printed in an edition of 390 copies, 80 printed on Japanese vellum and 310 copies on handmade paper.

Cyril W. Beaumont (1891-1976) was a British dance historian, critic, publisher, and bookseller. He established the Beaumont Press in 1917. In his book The First Score, Cyril W. Beaumont gives an account of the development of the Beaumont Press and information on its first twenty publications. He described the book To Nature, writing:

“The design on the title page was intended to represent the whole range of Nature: in the air, on land and in water – symbolized respectively by a heron, a stag and a fish. This was printed in two colours, an unusual combination of a warm brown and Wedgwood blue.

The printing of this book was completed on June 30, 1923, a new handmade paper being used. I came to the conclusion that the last making of paper was too white and therefore determined to have a pale cream paper of slightly smoother texture. This, a great improvement on the previous papers used, was again made by Messrs. Millbourn & Co. A further innovation was the use of a new colophon device. I had long felt that the hand press designed by White to be too heavy for the page, and I asked Schwabe to design me a new one. This woodcut appeared for the first time in To Nature.”
