I made a classic-style tracker video of the main theme for Party on Hallow Grove, Death's Mansion! I used Milkytracker, using custom generated waveforms and some free samples. This was my first tracker song in Milky after not using it or making music for about 6 years. I'm very proud to be getting back into music and learning more about this awesome program in the process! Hope you guys enjoy the tunes! Will be trying to post more soon!

Basically every mod I ever made was in Octamed or Windows MED, neither of which have perfect support in players like VLC. So I just spent the past 4 months converting my aminet uploads (going back to like 1993) to XM (Thanks to OpenMPT), and reposting them back to Aminet. Now they'll at least sound like shit for the right reason.

Hello, we're 'tar xzvf', two people who make noise music; so far we've only used old school tracker programs such as were popular in the 1990s to make it. We've released an album, which can be listened to below, called "mini-album no. 1". We like to use digital sources of noise, such as executable files which we edit for what we consider to be their best parts and use them in the composition of the tracks. All of our songs so far have come from XM (FastTracker II) modules and were made in MilkyTracker and FastTracker II Clone in Linux.
Our name comes from the Linux command to extract an archive into a folder, specifically one that ends in the .tar.gz extension.

Famitracker or Milkytracker are free tracking software that you can use to make chiptunes. The limitations of chiptune is an excellent way to learn to make music / learn composing, as it forces you to think outside of the box to balance instruments and tones instead of heavily relying on production and effects. You won’t get bogged down by the details and it’s significantly less daunting
LMMS is a free DAW that is quite similar to FL studio. I composed my first non-chiptune music tracks using it
If you’re learning and not intending to make money off your music… Honestly, pirate shit when you want to branch out. Make sure when you do though that it’s something you feel you’ll eventually be able to buy in the future, cause there’s a significant risk of being caught if you get recognition for your work (such as being hired to compose or if you start making a lot of money ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ). Piracy is a better way of trying before you buy since a trial period is nowhere near long enough to learn the full ins and outs of a program
people NEED to stop gatekeeping making music like ohhhh i don’t have an instrument ohhhhh i don’t know music theory ohhhhh i’m not gonna pay for some program. SHUT UP. take my hand.
you need NONE of that shit!!!!! there’s a website called beepbox.co. literally all you have to do is press things until it sounds a modicum of nice. it’s easy it’s free and it works on anything which has a browser because it’s a website.

if even ONE person starts making music bc of this post it will be worth it.
making bad music is just as important and okay as it is to write badly or draw badly or sing badly. you ARENT BEHOLDEN TO MAKE GOOD MUSIC. making music is not utilitarian HAVE FUN. HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!!

Gave MilkyTracker a shake and tried to put down a basic drum and bass but the built-in generator kinda basic and I don't know what I'm doing so it all sucks but still was pretty fun.
I figured out a little about how the ticks work, every tick is essentially a quarter note which makes sense why every four ticks there is a yellow one. Lots of commands to learn yet, and I should try actually sampling things next time.

Being the second release and first full-length album by us, the harsh glitch noise duo "tar xzvf", this release is about technology you may remember 20 years ago. Sound cards, CD burners, speakers, microphones, graphics cards. They created a world that concentrated more and more power in the hands of the individual consumer and as time went on, this power only increased. Some used it for destructive purposes, and others used it to create. Some created destructive things. The entire order of the world was shaped by how this technology was used, and this album is about the intersection of the analog human with the digital world, very abstractly. It is not an easy listen.
The album was made largely with modular synth samples recorded from diig's synth setup, and then they were sequenced by misusing old-school-style sample-based trackers like MilkyTracker, MilkyTrackerX, and FastTracker II Clone, which are limited in their capabilities but which prove time and time again to be the correct tool for the job of creating tar xzvf's noise. The album is at the intersection point where harsh noise, glitch, industrial music, and our own ideas meet.
tar xzvf is "tarballrat" and "diig".
