Directed by David Butler
Produced by Buddy G. DeSylva for 20th Century-Fox
Written by David Butler, Buddy G. DeSylva, and Sid Silvers
Choreography by Harold Hecht
Synopsis ~ Spencer Tracy stars as fast-buck promoter Smoothie King. Our hero's latest scam is to pass off Hollywood extra Wanda Gale (Pat Patterson) and forger Limey Brook (Herbert Mundin) as British nobility, getting both of them prestigious jobs at a movie studio. Eventually Wanda becomes a big star, falling out of love with Smoothie along the way in favor of her leading man Hal Reed (John Boles). But Smoothie takes it all in stride; after all, there's still a world full of chumps and suckers, ripe for fleecing.
CAST
Spencer Tracy (’Smoothie’ King) won two Oscars and was nominated seven other times in his long career. This is his only musical. He also appeared with Lucille Ball in Without Love (1945).

Lucille Ball* (Chorine) makes her eighth film since coming to Hollywood in 1933.
Barbara Pepper* (Chorine) made six films with Lucille Ball, including her Lucy’s first, Roman Scandals (1933). The two became friends, and she was one of the first people Lucille Ball wanted for the role of Ethel Mertz after Bea Benadaret passed. Pepper’s drinking made her a risk for the network and sponsor, but she went on to make ten appearances on “I Love Lucy”.

Lucille Ball was paid $75 dollars a week when she was loaned out to Fox by RKO to make this film. She appears in the song “Waitin’ at the Gate for Katy.”
The film received a favorable review from The New York Times critic Mordaunt Hall, who called it "a neat, carefree piece of work, which is helped greatly by Spencer Tracy, Pat Paterson, an English actress who here makes her American picture bow; Herbert Mundin, Harry Green, and, to a lesser extent, by John Boles" and noted that it "has its full share of honest humor and also several tuneful songs." Nonetheless, it was a box office disappointment for Fox.

Frank Perconte
The real Frank Perconte:
Frank Perconte was a man of few words, and was very brief with details of his life. I am going to compile everything he has said and what others said to hopefully create a picture for you.
Frank Perconte was born March 10, 1917 in Joliet, Illinois to Joseph and Mary Perconte. Frank was the first born. He had a brother Jasper “Jack”, and sisters Mildred and JoAnn. (JoAnn died on January 15, 2018) Frank was raised in Joliet, Illinois where his father ran a saloon. When he was about 9 or 10, Frank would go to the saloon to be with his father. He recalled it being fun and having a pool table.
His father died in 1929, when Frank was 12. How did he die? Frank said that his father ran a tavern and that’s all he wanted to say about it.
After his father died, Franks and his siblings moved in with his grandparents, across town. This meant a new neighborhood and new friends. The children adapted nicely to the new neighborhood. They went to different schools and Frank said he remained friends with some of his closests friends from there till his death.
Frank was Catholic and went to a private school that was supported by a Catholic Church.
He had an interest in sports and played third base in baseball for his school. His nephew, Jack Perconte, would eventually play for the Dodgers. Frank graduated high school in 1935.
After high school was over, Frank and his friends found jobs were few and fair between during the Great Depression. But they managed to land a job. They traveled every day from Joliet, Illinois to Gary, Indiana to work in an outdoor steel mill. This trip is about an hour one way. He worked a crane in the mill. Frank said it was a good job and he liked doing that job.
But, the war started and it changed everything. The day Pearl Harbor was attacked, Frank was in Joliet that Sunday morning. He was surprised, just like everyone else. “A war with another country, my god.”
After realizing he was going to be drafted. He enlisted. He chose to be a paratrooper after watching a movie about paratroopers. After the movie stated they earned more money, he was determined to be one. In his words, “why else would we jump out of a perfectly good airplane?”
Frank was one of the original men under Sobel. The men say they recall Frank was older, early twenties or so, smoke cigarettes, and didn’t speak much. One many recalls Frank saying something about a girl name Evelyn and how he’s going to marry her one day. He did marry her during furlough at Camp Benning. He’d met her in Joliet. By the time he left to cross the Atlantic, she was expecting a child.
Frank says his best friends were Carwood Lipton, George Luz, Gordy Carson, Albert Blithe, and Pat Christenson.
He was a corporal in the third platoon.
When all of Easy crossed over the Atlantic, Frank says he mostly remembers the food being terrible on that trip. He claims to have eaten only Hershey Bars.
Frank made the jump on D-Day and landed near St. Mère de Mont. He recalls a river nearby and that he was probably about 5 miles away from the last guy who jumped. He met with Lipton, Boyle, Luz, and Christenson and walked towards their destination. They later met up with Winters and his group.
When they jumped into Holland, it was a summer day. The weather was nice and it was warm. (According to Perconte at least) The jump was easy because “the ground was as flat as a pancake”. Frank doesn’t talk much about Holland except that he visits from time to time and has good friends there still.
In Bastogne, Frank was just outside of Foy when he got hit.
The bullet pierced his thigh, missing his “private’s private parts” by inches, and went through his leg and out his butt. He wasn’t shot in the ass, exactly. Everyone claims he was but he was shot in the thigh. He even had it confirmed by the doctor (he was a very lucky man and I’m sure his kids are happy it missed) but everyone still claims he was shot in the ass.
Perconte joined the boys in Easy again about two weeks before the war ended.
Frank came back to his wife Evelyn and his son Richard, who was almost a year old. He says he couldn’t stop crying at the sight of his son for the first time.
He originally tried to work at the steel mill again. He didn’t say long because he was informed the post office was looking for jobs. There he stayed for 30 years.
Evelyn and Frank had only one son and ended up seeing their two grandsons grow up. Evelyn died in 2002.
During the making of Band of Brothers, Frank grew close with the man acting him, James Madio.
After Frank’s death in 2013, Madio posted: I lost my dear friend, Frank Perconte. A man whom left his mark of great honor, respect and love. His tremendous journey has blessed me with monumental memories. I honor him and his family, whom welcomed me so graciously into their lives. He’s altered the lives of many, especially mine. I will truly miss him.
Underneath was a photo of the actor and the hero.
Frank passed away on October 24, 2013.

25 at 25: A Community of Artists
Due to the Covid-19 shelter-in-place order, our campus and VPA Gallery were closed during the original exhibition timeline of 25 at 25: A Community of Artists. In addition, our campus remained closed through the fall and spring semesters of the 20/21 Academic Year. Although these circumstances prevented us from sharing this exhibition in person with the public, we remain thankful to the participating artists for their generous support and participation in our jubilee exhibition. We are so proud of the 25 at 25 exhibition and what it represents to the Visual and Public Art Department -- 25 years of dynamic VPA Visiting Artist Series Programming that continues to feature emerging and established figures in contemporary art and community engaged practices. Our Visiting Artist Program actively seeks out prominent artist scholars to give public, on-campus presentations that are free and open to our entire campus and local communities. Our series creates a forum for engagement and dialogue with our students through artist mentorship and provides insight into the creative process and artistic practices that convey analytical thinking, social responsibility, and skills of communication and community building in relation to both VPA and CSUMB’s missions. This type of face-to-face engagement is invaluable to our students, and we are so thankful for this milestone and first-time exhibition of works by members of VPA’s Visiting Artist Series.

13 Witchy Books for a Magical Month
They say you write what you want to read, and I’m no exception. I love some goodold-fashioned (and newly imagined) witchy magic at any time of year but particularly as we enjoy the days leading up to Halloween. No matter your age, here are some fabulous witchy tales to enjoy this month. (I didn’t include the Harry Potter series because it’s a given that these books should lead any list in the witching/wizarding world.)
Picture Books
Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson and Axel Sheffler
The witch and her cat are happily flying through the sky on a broomstick when the wind picks up and blows away the witch's hat, then her bow, and then her wand! Luckily, three helpful animals find the missing items, and all they want in return is a ride on the broom. But is there room on the broom for so many friends? Copy And when disaster strikes, will they be able to save the witch from a hungry dragon?

Piggie Pie by Margie Palatini and Howard Fine
Gritch the Witch is grouchy, grumpy, and very hungry. The only thing that could make her happy is something extra special for lunch, and that is: Piggie Pie! Gritch zooms off on her broomstick to find eight plump piggies -- where else? -- on Old MacDonald's Farm. Cleverly disguised pigs impersonate ducks, chickens, a cow, and Old MacDonald himself, as this uproarious, quick-paced story builds to an ironically surprising conclusion. Wacky, hip, and illustrated with bold, bright paintings, "Piggie Pie" adds a new twist to an old fairy-tale scene.

Big Pumpkin by Erica Silverman and S.D. Schindler
Once there was a witch who longed for pumpkin pie. Unfortunately, the pumpkin she had grown from a seed became so big she simply couldn't get it off the vine. Although "she pulled and she tugged and she pulled...that pumpkin just sat." Along came a ghost. "I am bigger than you and stronger, too," said he. "Let me try." Well, the witch wanted that whole pumpkin for herself. But she needed help -- Halloween was just hours away... With the rhythm and repetition that children love, Erica Silverman tells a rollicking story about a witch who, through her encounter with a ghost and other spooky creatures, discovers both the value of cooperating and the joy of sharing. S.D. Schindler brings this captivating crew to life in spirited paintings that are as warm as they are funny.

Torn between her quest for belonging and her desire to be true to herself, Kit struggles to survive in a hostile place. Just when it seems she must give up, she finds a kindred spirit. Hex Hall series by Rachel Hawkins
Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she is a witch. Her non-gifted mother has been supportive, consulting Sophie’s estranged father—a warlock—only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it’s her dad who exiles her to “Hex Hall”, an isolated reform school for wayward Prodigium, a.k.a. witches, fairies, and shape-shifters. By the end of her first day, Sophie has three new enemies, a futile crush on a warlock, a tagalong ghost, and a vampire roommate. Worse, Sophie soon learns that an unknown predator has been attacking students. As a series of blood-curdling mysteries converges, Sophie prepares for the biggest threat of all: an ancient secret society determined to destroy all Prodigium, especially her.

And so is Cal. Their connection is immediate and unbreakable; Cal teases out Morgan's power, her love, her magick. Adult Fiction
Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman
For more than two hundred years, the Owens women have been blamed for everything that has gone wrong in their Massachusetts town. Gillian and Sally have endured that fate as well: as children, the sisters were forever outsiders, taunted, talked about, pointed at. Their elderly aunts almost seemed to encourage the whispers of witchery, with their musty house and their exotic concoctions and their crowd of black cats. But all Gillian and Sally wanted was to escape. One will do so by marrying, the other by running away. But the bonds they share will bring them back—almost as if by magic...

The All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness
In this tale of passion and obsession, Diana Bishop, a young scholar and a descendant of witches, discovers a long-lost and enchanted alchemical manuscript, Ashmole 782, deep in Oxford's Bodleian Library. Its reappearance summons a fantastical underworld, which she navigates with her leading man, vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont. Harkness has created a universe to rival those of Anne Rice, Diana Gabaldon, and Elizabeth Kostova, and she adds a scholar's depth to this riveting tale of magic and suspense. The story continues in book two, Shadow of Night, and concludes with The Book of Life.

Cousins O’Dwyer Series by Nora Roberts (Dark Witch, Shadow Spell, Blood Magick)
From Book 1: With indifferent parents, Iona Sheehan grew up craving devotion and acceptance. From her maternal grandmother, she learned where to find both: a land of lush forests, dazzling lakes, and centuries-old legends. Ireland. County Mayo, to be exact. Where her ancestors’ blood and magic have flowed through generations—and where her destiny awaits.
Iona arrives in Ireland with nothing but her Nan’s directions, an unfailingly optimistic attitude, and an innate talent with horses. Not far from the luxurious castle where she is spending a week, she finds her cousins, Branna and Connor O’Dwyer. And since family is family, they invite her into their home and their lives.
When Iona lands a job at the local stables, she meets the owner, Boyle McGrath. Cowboy, pirate, wild tribal horseman, he’s three of her biggest fantasy weaknesses all in one big, bold package.
Iona realizes that here she can make a home for herself—and live her life as she wants, even if that means falling head over heels for Boyle. But nothing is as it seems. An ancient evil has wound its way around Iona’s family tree and must be defeated. Family and friends will fight with each other and for each other to keep the promise of hope—and love—alive…

Iron Man och Twilight hade båda premiär 2008, varpå The Walking Dead såg världens ljus 2010.
Men först några disclaimers:
1. Mitt filmintresse tog fart runt 2008/2009. Parasite, 1917, The Lighthouse, Marriage Story, Little Women, A Little Day in the Neighborhood) men väldigt sen (i vissa fall till och med tidigt 2020) premiär i Sverige har jag av naturliga skäl inte heller hunnit se.
2. Dokumentärer och kortfilmer utesluts, likaså miniserier (och rena tv-serier såklart). Titlar som The Act of Killing och O.J.: Made in America tillhör det starkaste jag har sett under decenniet men hör alltså inte hemma på just den här listan.
Slutpladdrat. Nu kör vi.
50. The Grey (2011)
Underskattad.
49. The Spectacular Now (2013)
48. 20th Century Women (2016)
47. Inside Out (2015)
45. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017)
44. Rust and Bone (De rouille et d'os, 2012)
43. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019)
41. Spotlight (2015)
