The Mi'kmaw Language Act that recognizes Mi'kmaw as the original language of Nova Scotia officially became law Sunday at a proclamation ceremony held at Potlotek First Nation in Richmond County.

Minister of L'nu Affairs Karla MacFarlane first announced the government's intention to enact the legislation in October 2021.

MacFarlane said Sunday that the province will take further steps to invest in the promotion and revitalization of the language based on the recommendations of a joint team committee that is to be formed.

A coalition of Mi’kmaq First Nations, who have been facing massive amounts of racist violence over their right to fish in their native waters has reached an agreement with Canadian seafood giant, Clearwater.

As a result, the Mi’kmaq coalition will likely hold all of the Canadian fishing licenses given to that company— and Clearwater is the largest holder of shellfish licences and quotas in Canadian fisheries.

also look I get that alastor is really just creole bc vivziepop wanted an excuse to excuse her (sort of iffy) portrayal of voudou, but would it really kill people to do any research on us beyond the barebone “look up basic definitions and call it a day” thing. Especially as an Indigenous Cajun, I’m sick of being erased by not only history, not only the U.S. government, but also by society all together. And I’m sicker of people who aren’t Cajun or Creole contributing to that by attempting to define shit when it’s clear they got no clue what they’re talking about.

y'all we found even more mikmaw surnames going a lil ways back: bond, chicoine & tapp & o'connor & lemieux is a huron-wendat (which is a few ways back) surname apparently. on caroline's maternal side there's a lotta mikmaw marriages. holy shit. my& great great grandmother ( my maternal grandfather aka pappy's grandma ); maybe, just maybe we can get enrolled if the nation even allows that far back but i really don't wanna get my hopes up.

Mi’kmaw lobster fishers who were blockaded, attacked and assaulted while exercising a treaty right to harvest lobster late last year say internal Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) documents expose systemic racism in the bureaucracy and preferential policing by law enforcement.

APTN News obtained hundreds of internal records that reveal public servants and law enforcement agencies knew potentially violent protests against the Mi’kmaq were coming, yet did little to intervene.

“That’s pretty unnerving. It’s even more unnerving to know those documents exist,” said Jason Marr, a lobster harvester with Sipekne’katik First Nation.
