20- did Light deserve to die at the end?

Interesting question to answer, because we in the system apparently can't agree on this. I (🏹) am the one answering this ask, however, and my opinion is that he did not. Elaboration on my thought process:

If allowed to be tried through official channels / the regular justice system, Light would almost certainly have faced the death penalty, which I think would not have been "deserved", because I am not in favour of giving any government body any power over life and death to begin with. A step further, I don't know exactly how one would go about rehabilitating him if one didn't want to go the "simply keep him imprisoned and isolated from society at large" route, but I suspect making him safe for the average person to be around would be as easy as taking the Death Note away from him (he never tried to kill anyone using any other weapons, even at the very end; he's not the hands-on murder type, and clearly has a moral code of some sort / does not kill completely at random). Hardly a "this man needs to be executed for the common good" situation.

Light's death was effectively Ryûk's decision, made because "Light got boring" (and if not killed, would have simply languished in prison forever or been death penaltied anyway), which I think is a shit reason to kill anybody -- even accounting for the fact that Ryûk is a shinigami with moral standards inapplicable to human beings. It wasn't even a mercy killing, Light didn't want to die. Not deserved in that sense either.

However: I will acknowledge that Light dying was the most narratively satisfying way for Death Note to end, and other guys in here are absolutely cheering for the answer to be "yes he deserved it so much!! Then Perish!!", so... make of this what you will.

Most of the headcanons I can think of right now come from a very specific crackfic AU we have with our best friend @xenomorphvevo, and are perhaps too crack-y and in-jokey to be transposable to non-lolrandomxD Death Note (such as Near's favourite Bionicle being named Johannes Mikael Hoffnung more about that in the tags)...

but! In one of our current WIPs Near is very skilled with lucid dreaming for plot purposes, and I think that would make sense outside of said WIP too. Like, he strikes me as the type to experiment with his own mind, why not with his dreams? And he would likely get really good at it over the years.

Some really old sketches that I’m just gonna post now because the concepts are probably never going to see the light of day (or maybe when we are in our 90s idk)

Notes on Mello ad his family. I was trying to develop some of the more unexplored characters and still kind of want to do a lil tidbit with his sister because she’s such a troublemaker but probably not. Still would be fun to stick them into some more comics though

Notes on Adrian, same deal as Mello I was just trying to flesh out some underused characters. I kind of want to do a little reunion arc with him, Lily and Marcin and have them hang out more because they’re supposed to be childhood friends. Have some ideas…he’s definitely more fleshed out than mello is

Dark type city plotline…..yall I had a story all planned out for this thing. Even before I reboot the blog with the Darkrai plot I had so much of that planned out too…so sad I had to abandon the blog but I was pretty proud of the storyline I came up with

Not a problem, I will try to chronicle everything that has happened on our side to the best of my understanding.

A cryptid got out of the basement where we keep the harmful alters, when the cryptid got out it took away the memories of Coffin and terribly injured him: Pompom proceeded to chase the Cryptid away, and everyone else that was in front quickly ran out.

Kira took the chance to escape out of the basement as well, he got hold of a knife and stabbed Near twice in the stomach, causing some of Near's internal organs to spill out, the only reason Kira stopped was because I threatened to shoot him, Bayonetta then escorted both me and Kira out.

While this was happening, Matt froze and was not sure what to do. He frantically started posting about what he would do and the status of Near, L saw this and demanded to know what happened. Matt snapped at him after this, and I think that was the last of their contact together. When this happened, Ray's L started to tell Matt what to do, Matt panicking all the while.

Matt took Near to Miguel, our medic, shortly after and that is where he stayed. Unfortunately, Kira took this as an advantage to front- Bayonetta soon finding him and holding him back. He began to post distressing nonsensical ramblings and reblogs about how he would make sure Near would die, in the process causing distress to others- Kira even responded to a post that L made, but I do not think L was continuing to front or simply just ignored the comment, but that is the last I have heard of L.

Everything calmed down from there, Mello refusing to leave Near's side and passing out from exhaustion, Matt left to the basement to try and get Coffin's memories back for Mephisto's sake, Near woke up from his anesthesia but was still high off it, and wrote posts about how he was sorry for "everything he caused" even though none of it was his fault, and I started to front once more, Ray's L giving me strict instructions to never leave Near's side, and to make sure I do background checks on everyone that I leave him with, which I am currently doing.

O presidente do Tribunal de Contas do Estado, conselheiro Wilber Coimbra, acompanhado do diretor da Escola Superior de Contas, conselheiro José Euler Potyguara Pereira de Mello, e do conselheiro Edilson Silva, visitaram nesta quarta-feira, 17, o Tribunal de Justiça de Rondônia. A cúpula diretiva do TCE foi recebida pelo presidente do TJRO, desembargador Raduan Miguel Filho, e pelo diretor da Escola da Magistratura de Rondônia, desembargador Alexandre Miguel. Durante a reunião foram tratados assuntos institucionais, como parcerias entre as duas instituições.
