someone more well caught up with the campaign can correct me if im wrong. But based on the impression I've gotten, i love the like. Spectrum of "accidentally oncall" we have, with how the Mighty Nein are accidentally unknown go-to's for various powerful people to get tasks done, while Bell's Hells are accidentally primary sources and lynchpins for various powers to understand and coordinate events.
Like the Mighty Nein are. they're assholes, if you talk to them and they dont really like you. you'll know it and it will kind of suck. But for the most part people don't have to interact directly with them. It's almost weird how much they don't have to??? Like shit just gets. Done. And you find out later like OH its the same. weirdos. No idea who they are but you're told its the same group. What do they even look like. There are so many weird stories at least half of them NEED to be fake. Or people just assume incorrect attribution bc it cant ALL be the same group. What do you mean they saved a world and an island and? Turtles were involved? Sea serpents? what.
For anyone who knows even slightly better/has slightly better connections (but doesn't know them personally) They're just like a weird form of an urban legend where its like. elite strike team. silent and effective. (in the background we see them falling out of the sky into the ocean onto one another). But for the most part its really peak. Knows a guy who knows a guy. If someone HAPPENS to be present they might be squinting into the chaos like. That girl choked me with a stick once? Isnt that other one a professor. Wha- okay. They're gone again. Silent. effective. You have a really hard time tracking them down even if you want to. (If they want to find you though, you can't escape them).
And then with Bell's Hells. (At least when I last checked in). It goes more like. Hey some weirdos have critical knowledge for us. And it's just. an Absolute Halloween themed clown car of events that rolls up. There's a talking dead rat. Weird old gnome griping about wood. They keep flirting with everyone. Including someone that looks very evil. A busty faun just took your wallet. You're pretty sure this group threw a bunch of bees in someone's face in a street race and crashed a skyship and were absolute NIGHTMARE CUSTOMERS at various establishments. They're the ones with critical knowledge. They are communicating it SO, INCREDIBLY INEFFECTIVELY. They were on the moon? They have a person FROM the moon? They keep trying to be friendly with you. You don't want them to be. Another critical thing happens. They're the only one with knowledge. Again. The dead rat keeps flirting with you. You're getting voices in your head. More developments in the critical scenario. They're still the primary source on this potentially Exandria-shattering event. They're still spending an inexplicable amount of time talking about the hotness of various people inbetween dispensing information that literally no one else has been able to glean. You know who they are. You kind of wish you didn't. You are Going To See Them Again. (threat)

The floating discourse that Ashton, Laudna, Imogen, etc. didn't do enough to catch the attention of the Prime Deities is so one dimensional.
Vox Machina was Matt creating the world and introducing the gods in his homebrew setting. It's going to be the "nicest" portrayal of them and be the classical fantasy gods you see.
Mighty Nein was a mostly atheistic campaign and focused a lot on human relationships to lead the story. The most religious it really got was with Yasha and the Stormlord and with Caduceus's relationship with the Wildmother.
Bell's Hells is a deep dive of religion in Exandria. The cast and audience know the overall timeline of the gods' history on Exandria and how they interact with people. This campaign is actually a very realistic exploration of people's varied experiences with divinity. We've only really seen a cleric's connection with the Primes, but the Hells are laypeople.
Just like with the real world, the Hells (and the cast) portray religious trauma and doubt people experience. Realistically, there is no way for every person in the world to have the same level of devotion clerics and temples exhibit. And we're now seeing the broader spectrum of devoutness.
The world has been built, and this campaign is the cast diving into it.

Older Favorites 8: A Shadowgast Rec List
Tumblr media
This week we have the eighth edition of older favourite fics, check under the cut for 19 fics that were uploaded or last updated more than two years ago! Don't forget to comment and kudos if you enjoy them
when will these two wizards kiss already by allmadeofstardust (13590, Explicit) Reccer's Content Notes: No Content Notes
A series of canon divergent episodes, exploring potential first kisses the wizards might've had in the final episodes of C2.
Reccer says: Back when C2 was finishing up, I always looked forward to this series updating XD it was a really fun way to feed the beast that spent every one of those last episodes waiting for a Shadowgast kiss to happen. And the ending of the series is really lovely too.
Tumblr media
Like 80/20 on the Kinsey Scale by jakia (2772, Teen) Reccer's Content Notes: None
Caleb sleeps with Essek and panics about his sexuality. A story about friendship and identity.
Reccer says: I liked it!
Tumblr media
By the Light by MoonwalkingCrab (31993, Mature) Reccer's Content Notes: Choose Not to Warn, Major Character Death, Temporary Character Death
After not hearing from the Nein for months and assuming he had been forgotten, Essek receives a plea from the Nein to help save Caleb. Canon-Compliant until e88!
Reccer says: I Love love LOVE this fic. I came into the fandom right at the end of C2 and have read many really good pre-97 fics - This one is probably my absolute favorite. AMAZING Essek characterization, really nailed the loneliness at his core, I love the take and the headcanons! Also also, while this is absolutely a Shadowgast fic, this is also very much an Essek & The Nein fic. Every interaction is amazing, love the level of detail, adore the pacing, just a really good and soft and well rounded fic!!
Tumblr media
in the times in between by jakia (8098, Teen) Reccer's Content Notes: mention of miscarriage
While refining a spell, Caleb spends a few days accidentally visiting his parents over the course of a decade and a half. Essek helps the final time.
Reccer says: Kind and sweet, plus excellent mom behavior from Una at the end.
Tumblr media
infinity in the palm of your hand by mousecookie (5752, Teen) Reccer's Content Notes: Major Character Death, Temporary Character Death, Canon-Typical Violence
Alternate ending to e116 - The Mighty Nein find a rusted iron door in Aeor, as well as the fallen body of one Essek Thelyss.
Reccer says: Really well/solidly written, with an *amazing* twist that I did NOT see coming - Very good emotions, very good characterizations, just an all-round lovely read written during the fandom's 'When will Essek return from the war?' phase X3 Also also I just ADORE the title!
Tumblr media
only code it knows is rote survival by Chrome (12637, Mature) Reccer's Content Notes: No Content Notes
In a world where Trent makes it back to Eiselcross before the Nein do, Essek spends a night under the effects of the Feeblemind spell. Caleb undertakes a duty of care, and the Nein learn how Essek feels about them beneath everything.
Reccer says: Wonderful characters and lovely writing!
Tumblr media
like coloured indigo inscribed with my name by KmacKatie (30648, Teen) Reccer's Content Notes: No Content Notes
An exploration of tradition, culture, what is worth sacrificing in finding yourself and family.
Reccer says: I think about this fic a lot. The highs, the lows, the sweetness, the angst. It's existed in the back of my mind for so long that it's kind of hard to describe the particulars of why I love it; I just do. I love the snapshots into Essek and the Nein's lives; the moment in Chapter 4 when the wizards kiss stands out to me as an example of that. The heartache of Chapters 6 and 7 is so well done; the strings of unanswered texts (and Essek's deleted replies) at the end of 6 and "I can’t eat soup without thinking of you." in particular (ESPCIALLY the latter) have stuck with me for years. Essek showing up at Caleb's birthday party after everything... there are tears in my eyes as I am typing this. I just love all of it so much, but the angst in particular really left a mark. And I love the ending so much too. All of it is just iconic and wonderful. To end on a lighter note, shout-out to the remark about Deirta and kumquats, which surfaced in my psyche recently after being dormant in there for so long XD
Tumblr media
a certain future by wristpockets (26997, Mature) Reccer's Content Notes: No Content Notes
Essek keeps trying to outwit The Mighty Nein, and gets stuck in a time loop trying to do so. He's trying to befriend them now, trying to earn their trust, but that's only because it's his best option... right?
Reccer says: While the Shadowgast is a relatively minor aspect of the story, it's a great character study.
Tumblr media
Echoes by MithrilWren (1759, Teen) Reccer's Content Notes: Choose Not to Warn
“Essek finds himself... unsettled by Caleb's new telepathic powers.“
Reccer says: Shadowgast, but with some Somnovem interference! This fic is short, but it packs a punch! I still get a shiver down my spine thinking about the ending.
Tumblr media
Somewhere Just for Us by bluebirdsongs (12835, Teen) Reccer's Content Notes: No Content Notes
Caleb takes Essek on a date to the version of the dance hall that lives on the Tower's 8th floor.
Reccer says: This is one of my all-time favorite Shadowgast fics, hands down. It is incredibly tender and sweet, with so many layers of emotion. The concept is brilliant and so well executed. I love Caleb introducing Essek to Zemnian cuisine and this fic is 100% the reason for it. And the flirting and the banter and the DANCING. There's a moment when they're dancing that made me yell in delight when I first read it back in 2021 and I still adore it. And the ending!!! Augh, it's all just so heartfelt. It deserves all the love in the world. (Also, it never fails to make me crave a preztel)
Tumblr media
russet inconveniences by marleybone (7328, Teen) Reccer's Content Notes: No Content Notes
Essek needs a roommate and finds one in Caleb Widogast.
Reccer says: You know a fic is good when you think you've submitting reccs and then you remember the title and immediately have to go pull it up to recc too XD this one is just so fun!!! Caleb is a menace of a roommate and I love that that never stops, even as Essek realizes he's got feelings. The tag "minor inconveniences to lovers" is fantastic XD
Tumblr media
Unspoken Love by marsmystic (4187, Teen) Reccer's Content Notes: No Content Notes
“ Caleb and Essek return to Aeor together. A relationship develops. Or was it already there?”
Reccer says: This fic sparks joy! Wizards being besties!! Essek and Caleb’s relationship is so sweet in this. It really highlights how the romantic aspects of it stem from their friendship, which is one of my favorite flavors of shadowgast.
Tumblr media
The Mind and The Malady by SaltCore (38945, Teen) Reccer's Content Notes: Graphic Depictions of Violence
There is a remedy for his illness, of course. There is always a way to unwind magic, but there is always a price. The cost of Essek’s life, now that he’s contracted Hanahaki’s disease, can be paid two ways—one is higher than Essek can bear and the other, well. The other can only be paid by someone else.
Reccer says: Beautifully written and wonderful worldbuilding! Always a fav to reread!
Tumblr media
some things time can't fix by Chrome (25930, Mature) Reccer's Content Notes: No Content Notes
Essek is arrested for treason. The Dynasty severs the daemons of prisoners before executing them so they can’t be reborn.
Reccer says: Daemon au! This fic made me feel so many emotions
Tumblr media
Like a Steel Trap by kaeda (12519, Explicit) Reccer's Content Notes: No Content Notes
Essek is very much into Caleb's keen mind.
Reccer says: Wizards loving wizards for wizardly reasons!
Tumblr media
a mirror to the sky by renquise (7432, Mature) Reccer's Content Notes: No Content Notes
Essek shows up on Caleb's doorstep in the bitter cold of winter and shows him something private
Reccer says: Self bondage fic my beloved! The tension between the two is so good!
Tumblr media
To Mourn a Mischief by toneofjoy (81716, Teen) Reccer's Content Notes: No Content Notes
It's an Ever After-inspired AU with magic, where Caleb is trapped with Ikithon but ends up wooing Essek. Follows the plot of Ever After but has some good twists and turns!
Reccer says: The writing gives that fairy-tale feel, and though it follows the plot of Ever After, it's different enough to be exciting. Also love the surprise guests near the end, and the Jester/Essek and Caleb/Beau friendships are so good!
Tumblr media
The following two fics each received two recs:t
(your face in my hands is) everything good i need by mllekurtz (TheKnittingJedi) (25884, Mature) Reccer's Content Notes: No Content Notes
The last person Caleb Widogast, Professor of Modern History, expects to find as he walks in a random pub in a foreign city at the end of a long conference is Dr. Essek Thelyss, eminent Latinist and his sort-of intellectual crush.
Reccer 1 says: This is the first fic in my bookmarks and I've long since lost track of how many times I've reread it. So many moments have ingrained themselves in my memory; Caleb's hands on Essek's elbows when they first kiss. Their later spicy makeout getting interrupted by Essek getting a call. Caleb trying to pin Essek to his door the moment they get to his apartment for kisses and Essek having to get him to slowdown for a minute. Essek thinking Caleb looks like a god as they lay in bed together. "I want a clean break". Essek touching Caleb's new beard first thing when they reunite after Caleb's grown it. Their candelit video calls. I have to stop myself before I just list everything that happens because it's all SO GOOD. Essek Week 2021 produced some just magnificent fics and this is easily towards the top of that list. Reccer 2 says: The exquisite writing, the Demi Essek, the literal sleeping together, and the way their relationship evolves over time.
Tumblr media
we never do go over (we always gotta go through) by Chrome (17169, Teen) Reccer's Content Notes: No Content Notes
In which Essek uses Convergent Future to save the Nein in Aeor and has to take the journey out of Aeor with five levels of exhaustion.
Reccer 1 says: SUCH a classic, I distinctly remember reading this one on my laptop at the back of the forum room my study hall was in, right when it was posted. The physical toll of powerful magic is something I ALWAYS love to see explored, so this was already a success on that part. Add in 5+1, hurt/comfort, and Shadowgast tenderness and getting together? This fic still lives rent free in my head for a reason. Reccer 2 says: Such tenter feelings!
Tumblr media
This is one of our weekly communally-generated shadowgast rec lists. Every week we announce a new theme and allow anyone to submit a fic recommendation.
And hey, anyone includes you!
Next week, we'll be featuring fics that include good/complicated mom Deirta. Any fics coming to mind? Well, then use this form to submit!

no but essek's abnormal behaviours in the last arc and especially in episode 140 are my roman empire. which is ironic because aeor is something of a roman empire itself. but in all seriousness, it was the episode that made me realise i love essek and his development so much and it kinda summarised it even before caleb's epilogue.
and i mean the "it's not fair" scene specifically. it's like, an epitome of his whole character progression from a person who put An Objectively Important Goal above all else without hesitation to someone who can't help but care for people around even more than his goal, no matter how big and relevant it is.
the mighty nein - and he alongside them - pretty much saved the world and freed an ancient city from thousand-year-long suffering. they defeated nine extremely powerful menacing entities who managed to stay out of everyone's sight for years and were so close to achieving their goal and dooming exandria in the process. they did the impossible and became heroes and somehow, they survived, even though they had bidden farewells a couple of hours ago because they had already understood what they had been facing. and nevertheless. they made it.
and none of them was celebrating.
mighty nein are basically essek's only friends. he knew them to be very unusual people, to put it lightly, loud and stubborn and completely inescapable once they consider you to be one of their own. and they showed him so much kindness and put so much faith in him, they were here playing the most atrocious music ever and digging clay in his backyard for a spell they invented just to help one of theirs and asking him if he could bring them pastries the day after they found out he was lying to them and had started a war. they were chaotic and weird and sometimes unbearable but most importantly they were carrying so much hope with them all this time - a hope they could end the war, a hope they could stop the angel of irons cult, a hope they could get better, a hope he could get better, and now, finally, that they could save their lost friend.
and that hope shattered, just like that, the moments after they'd already made the impossible. they saved so many souls - and then could not get back just that one.
for essek "my intentions were never good they were important" thelyss it just. shouldn't have mattered. they won. it could have been worse. people die and when they die they rarely come back. they should've been happy everyone else barely made it alive.
but for some reason, mighty nein being so defeated after they saved the world exposed him to that overwhelming feeling of injustice and unfairness. and i mean, there were many things essek considered to be unfair, but when i watched his first appearance and his interactions with mighty nein later on til their reunion in aeor arc, i wouldn't dare to guess that one of the things on that list would be something that personal. and personal not even to him.
the thing is, essek didn't even know who that guy was. why mighty nein cared about him so much. he had an idea, i guess, that he was their friend once, or someone in that body was. it was also a person who wanted to unleash a terrifying horrific aberration onto the material plane. it was a person very dedicated to killing essek and his friends - and they still didn't take any pleasure in fighting him. essek didn't feel strongly about lucien or molly, because he never knew them.
i don't think he mourned his death and failed resurrection. he mourned mighty nein's hope, the one they put in him when they had no reason to, the one they offered yasha in the cathedral and the one they kept after the spell for veth failed and the one they carried til the very end because they wanted it to reach molly. they had saved people with this hope. they had saved nations. they had saved the world. but they ended up feeling like it hadn't even been worth anything.
how desperate would it feel, witnessing people who for some reason always saw good in you when they absolutely shouldn't, who made literal miracles out of nothing, who ended wars and fought gods and tricked the hags and freed cities from horrors beyond anyone's comprehension purely because they thought it was the right thing to do and also loved their friends this much, silently crying over a dead body they couldn't bring back to life? how desperate would it feel to realise that with all your knowledge about time you dedicated your life to and threw away any principles for, you can't undo this? no one can. some things are left to fate alone and this time it wasn't kind to them. no matter how much good they did, they still got slapped in the face.
and it was, i think, such a genuine moment of empathy. like, essek is the character who prefers to put up a facade and act distant and self-composed but this time he just. walked away unable to watch this. the could only say to fjord that it wasn't fair. even when he was caught off guard in nicodranas he was able to explain himself and his motives to an extent even though he was a nervous wreck whose extra important plan went to hell the second the only people he cared about appeared. this time he had nothing to elaborate on. it just wasn't fair. it wasn't fair his friends didn't get what they wanted the most. it wasn't fair he couldn't do anything to make it right.
it is such a sad and beautiful and even cathartic scene because it is about person who started a war that destroyed so many lives - and then met this ragtag group of weirdos who saw a lonely stand-offish guy and said "hey, let's be friends!" and didn't even wait for him to answer. he saw them being serious and calculated and he saw them being ridiculous and extremely stupid, he saw their mistrust to outsiders and their loyalty to each other, he made spells with them and paid a visit to their hot tub, he ate their stale pastries and drank their hot chocolate mixed with whiskey, he was welcomed amongst them and in their wonderful home, both in xhorhas before they even found out what he had done and in the tower when they already knew - and then, he saw them mourning their loss, defeated and helpless, and he, a person who believed there were things more important than whole nations, let alone just one life, couldn't help but share the pain they felt. a pure display of compassion from someone who detached himself from it, who didn't believe he could grow into a better person capable of it again, but became one nonetheless without even realising it

if i ever have to see another thought piece on the description of the white picket fence outside of fjord and jester’s place in mighty nein reunited indicating jester’s unhappiness in the relationship i will burn the world to the ground.
a) heteronormativity doesn’t exist in exandria !
b) fjord isn’t your Typical Male Love Interest Guy. if i ever have to read someone say that shit again i’m gonna (correctly) assume they haven’t paid attention at all to campaign 2 and any of fjord’s character arc.
c) perhaps, jester lavorre, woman who was raised on the ideology of romance novels and sexuality as exchange, might just find it uh… not a terrible thing that the white picket fence is falling apart outside since… fjord explicitly does Not feel like those romance novels to her, instead he feels comfortable. the way that a brightly painted but rarely used house might, especially when the couple in question spends most of their time adventuring together… which is an essential part of jester’s motivations throughout the campaign.
d) the reason fjord and jester seem unhappy in the reunion might be because, well, uh, whereas everyone else was getting a “vacation”, jester and fjord’s life together (specifically the fact that Fjord Loves Jester Enough To Risk The World (Momentarily) To Save Her) was the inciting action for an apocalyptic demigod being released - they Were unhappy. who wouldn’t be given those circumstances. jester nearly died, and fjord felt like the god that once saved him had now abandoned him, i am so truly sorry that their romance was not satisfactory for your vision of atypical romance (which, by the way, is literally reinforcing the restrictive romantic tropes you think you’re criticizing, so good job i guess). i would be much, much more concerned if jester and fjord Weren’t clearly dismayed.
e) both fjord and jester are individuals whose entire lives and character are defined by the expectation (both external and internal) that they behave and emote a certain way. that they’re in a relationship with someone who they feel that they can show that they are frustrated with or disagree on the layout of their house with or have different ideas on how to deal with the looming threat of a demigod is incredible. jester and fjord are emblematic of a relationship in which the characters Aren’t meant to be, but they Want to be together and they want to understand and support the other person so they work at it. we wouldn’t have conversations like “you seem disheartened..” “i am very disheartened! you almost died!” if they didn’t take the time and care to communicate with one another.
f) if you want a honeymoon era joyful queer romance, yasha and beau are right there! they are explicitly horny and in love and bright about it! if queerness is your measure of “trope breaking” i am very sorry to tell you that queer people partake in white picket fences, and i’d actually argue that in terms of Lifestyle Metaphor, beauyasha are more adherent to the whitepicket fence, nuclear familyism. this isn’t a detriment to them, just, very literally, beau works a 9-5 where she comes back to her housewife who gardens and cooks dinner and their future includes explicit reference to children. comparatively, fjord wants to address some issues in his past, jester is an artist, and both of them are interested in adventure for the foreseeable future.
g) if you truly think that a single part of laura’s description of the part-time abode of fjord and jester overrides every interaction and choice that both laura and travis make towards fjord and jester caring for each other in a deep and meaningful way that goes beyond the weird fandom constructed Man/Woman characters being portrayed by a married couple i truly, Truly have no idea why you even watch the many hours of content that cr is when you could… play/write your own shit.

there's been something that's been eating at me.
look at early mn and watch them all be so anti-anything leading them into conflict that they couldn't easily weasel their way out of, crack jokes about stopping the adventure and becoming sharecroppers, and how matt had to force them into caring about the war and the people it impacted (one of which being a player's husband) instead of ignoring it to do anything literally else.
and this carries on even after they're thrown into the thick of it. from handwaving away all of what essek did for the sake of "well, he's nice to us! and it happened so long ago it'd be pointless and hypocritical to hold him to that!" (which, you know, not how that works but sure) and pushing off dealing with the cerebus assembly until the very last episode, every single conflict the nein had was only relegated to them and their personal struggles. tharizdun and cognouza were really cool as apocalyptic monsters, but we only figured out their importance after the fact or in an exposition dump!
and this is what the mighty nein is praised for! they're praised for steamrolling over every single possible conflict they could encounter unless matt made it mandatory because of ashley's schedule or the baileyham's baby! so of course when the next campaign rolls around and the fandom is asked to look deeper into the world asides from the character's personal lives, they get upset.
and i'm not saying that it'd be superior if they were more objective or went with less character-based decisions or storylines as opposed to plot based decisions that impact the politicial discussions of exandria first and foremost. heck, it annoys the HELL out of me when characters i like in c3 are nothing but objective and refuse to budge on it (if you know you know) or when they stop to talk about lore stuff for too long! i love the silly feel-good vibes of the nein that're light on story and heavy on characterization!
but it does feel weird that people look at c3's less-than-wholly optimistic plotline where the status quo is directly questioned and insist it's forcing the series into new waters it was not built to tread when no, it's always been there. you just never found it pertinent to interact with because the players never took those routes, and were incurious after the fact.
when matt says he plans to make the animated series of the mighty nein far darker and more political, i can't help but wonder if the fans will reject it outright.
(obligatory disclaimer that YES i'm frustrated that there seems to be no other option for bell's hells than to get that salty codger's moon hijinks dealt with and not a single loose end left over and THEN they can finally do stuff they want and have downtime without being reminded that they gotta stop him every other sentence and they're all clearly dying to get to that point... but there was sledding on a wok, and making dresses out of cocktail shrimp for a zombie rat, and spin the bottle too. to act like they're completely flat little npcs running to the next objective marker over and over and have no silly character moments is plain wrong.)

The de Rolo kids are public schooled.
Preface
So I've been thinking. I don't believe Percival Fredrickstein von Musel Klossowski de Rolo the Third would (at least immediately) allow someone other than him, Vex, and perhaps the rest of Vox Machina, to privately tutor his kids. I'm using a combination of CR and TLOVM here, as the main campaign playthrough doesn't really linger much on Percy's relationship with Anders as the animation does, but the overall gist is that Anders betrayed the de Rolo family in favour of working for the Briarwoods (and in CR's case, Vecna).
You're the face I saw when murder entered my heart.
^ Percy, to his teacher, Professor Anders.
Home-tutoring
Is it impossible for Percy and Vex to teach their kids? Absolutely not. Is it impossible for them to teach their five kids, whilst also maintaining their own hobbies (and lives)? Eh... it's doable, but doing a Master's degree in Education myself, I cannot imagine the level of Percy's intended teaching and their kids' learning after Gwendolyn was born being left to just Percy and Vex as being remotely comfortable for them.
But then you have to consider what type of learning these kids are maintaining. I think Percy was initially within a factory model of education (based on what we saw in TLOVM) but broke out of it when he was on his own and started tinkering. I'm not well-versed with Vex's formal education -- I imagine she has one outside of her learned practical skills given she was in Syngorn for an amount of time with Syldor, but I imagine her idea of education is probably a little more "free" than Percy's. I like to think they had a conversation about what their kids' education would look like. Vex is not like Caleb and Beau in the Mighty Nein who constantly go to the library for additional information about anything and everything they don't know, but is instead already knowledgable, can deduce using logical reasoning, or goes and asks someone else (not to say Caleb and Beau can't do this either, but regardless). I think that indicates she's probably a little more world-wise than she is interested in classroom etiquette.
(Note: Taliesen Jaffe has joked that Percy probably took hits of pot now and then, delivered by Keyleth/Vax!Crow, to get through the day with his children around ("Do you see how many kids that is? Oh my god."))
I should also point out the interaction with Gwendolyn indicates she's at least accustomed to Percy's office/library where there are rules in place and it sounds like he might've said "Leave the book" because his kids have been taking them and not putting them back (which probably mortified him upon first incident).
Public Education
There is, however, an alternative I do like very much: this generation of de Rolo kids may actually be "public-schooled" (or at least, the Whitestone version of that).
Again, speaking as an Aussie pre-service teacher, it's a lot harder to be a good teacher while also planning to overthrow your government/be a cult leader at the same time when you've got a class of 20+ kids to look after and educate. Doable, but rather unlikely. Vex might've actually thought it safer and more to Percy's liking to put their kids' education into the system they have a direct gubernatorial say over, rather than allowing an educator direct access to his home, his family.
This would not only benefit the de Rolos, but also other lower/middle-class families in Whitestone, as there's no doubt they'd pump that education system with as much coin as would benefit their kids' learning.
Additionally, mentioning the pot joke again, it gets said five kids out of the home giving these parents some peace and quiet.
Obviously there'd be nobility etiquette teaching they'd have to undergo, but it's probably much, much easier to do that in-house than it is the entirety of their education.
I put it to you, fellow Critters: At what point, if any, would Percy relinquish the education of his kids to someone outside of Vox Machina? And, would that be in a regular school classroom with other kids?

i haven’t watched critical role in years, but i’ve been thinking abt how much i love how each campaign has a “found family” element to it while having a completely different group dynamic and a different way of interacting with the world around them.
at the start of c1, vox machina is already well-established, both as a successful adventuring party and interpersonally. they have powerful npc allies, they’re making grand confessions of love in the first “major” arc, everybody is already very comfortable with each other and they all know where they stand with one another. throughout the campaign, we see relationships slowly shift and grow, and we see them become more powerful and influential than their most powerful allies. they go down in the history books as heroes.
in c2, the mighty nein are a group of strangers with a bunch of secret trauma. there’s a lot of intra-party friction at first, they don’t have any powerful npcs they can really trust, and for a while they barely have any gold or any meaningful influence. we see them build their relationships with each other brick by brick into something beautiful, until each character is virtually unrecognizable from episode 1. by the end of the campaign, they are a unit that powerful people fear, but no layperson would recognize their name.
c3 (which admittedly i only watched ~40eps of), is kind of a combination of those 2 dynamics. most of the party has meaningful relationships established with one or two other characters at the start of ep1. they open up to one another quickly with relatively little tension. they have a trusted, powerful mentor quickly appointed, but that doesn’t last long-term. they have a character intimately familiar with the city they start in, but they have to move on to other parts of the world. they are relatively unknown to the average person, but simultaneously have powerful enemies and seem destined for something great.
it’s just very interesting how the same group of people can play the same game 3 times, each with the same goals of falling into that family dynamic and making their impact on the world, and make each one feel unique.

Canon Divergent AU Recs!
Tumblr media
This week, we have canon divergent AU recs! A dozen different what-ifs to explore below the cut - and as ever, if you like them, remember to comment or kudos!
Catch A Falling Star by Rainydaydecaf (32921,Mature) Warnings: Feeblemind Pairings: Beauregard Lionett/Yasha Nydoorin, Essek Thelyss & The Mighty Nein
The Nein find a feebleminded Essek down in the sewers along with the beacon.
Reccer says: It's got a great spotlight on each of the Mighty Nein as they interact with the feebleminded drow - from Fjord babysitting him and Kiri to Beau giving him a haircut - and feels true to the characters and the world
Tumblr media
pressure cracks by BananasofThorns (10271,Teen) Warnings: None Pairings: Fjord & Caleb Widogast
Fjord is a student at Solstryce Academy. Professor Ermendrud requests a private meeting with him.
Reccer says: It's got echoes of Fjord and Caleb's dynamic in the pirate arc, combined with scourger Bren
Tumblr media
The Star and the Wildflower by devil_seabird_king (ShaaKi) (8173,Teen) Warnings: suicidal thoughts Pairings: Caduceus Clay & Essek Thelyss
A young Essek is becomes friends with a young Caduceus Clay
Reccer says: This is a combination that doesn't get enough love, so it's fun to imagine what they'd be like as childhood friends
Tumblr media
A Whisper On My Shoulder by EssayofThoughts (251169,Mature) Warnings: Major Character Death Pairings: none
Percy's not the only member of his family to survive the Briarwoods' attack. He's just the only one to do so alive.
Reccer says: A true epic that imagines Cassandra as a ghost by Percy's side throughout the initial parts of Vox Machina's journey. Amazingly well thought out
Tumblr media
some ever after no one could predict by QueenWithABeeThrone (15343,Teen) Warnings: None Pairings: Leofric/Una Ermendrud
Over thirty years ago, Una Ermendrud went into the Feywild and met a satyr named Garmelie. thirty years later, Caleb reunites with his godfather.
Reccer says: I love how practical Una is in this, and how that practicality cuts through the feywild magic.
Tumblr media
both my broken hands are true by quothhh (1805,Teen) Warnings: None Pairings: Veth Brenatto & Caleb Widogast
In a world where Yeza was taken by the goblins instead of Veth, Caleb and Veth manage to meet anyway.
Reccer says: It's got some killer lines and also a great example of the Caleb and Veth friendship
Tumblr media
watch my back, and keep the blade by jadeandquartz (3553,Mature) Warnings: Graphic Depictions of Violence, Major Character Death Pairings: Orym & Imogen Temult
Laudna permanently dies. Imogen and Orym head after Otahan for revenge

Tumblr media
You Think You Can Rid Yourself Of Me So Easily? by sparklegem (3724,Mature) Warnings: Hurt no Comfort Pairings: none
Percy's cursed weapon is not as easy to get rid of as they think.
Reccer says: I liked it
Tumblr media
to know that this war was winless by quanshi (burningdarkfire) (834,Teen) Warnings: none Pairings: Beauregard Lionett & Caleb Widogast
Beauregard meets Bren for lunch
Reccer says: I love scourger Bren vs. Beauregard fics, and this is a lovely little taste
Tumblr media
The Fool and the Soldier by mare_astrorum (200,000+,Mature) Warnings: None Pairings:
Mollymauk Tealeaf survived the Mighty Nein's encounter with the Iron Shepherds on Glory Run Road, but a short time later, a spirit began hunting him, claiming that he stole his body.
Reccer says: One of the most insane things Matt dropped during the wrap-up was where the campaign might have gone had Molly survived. This is such a wonderful exploration of the concept of the Tombtakers as reoccurring enemies and Molly still with the party that is wonderfully IC, extremely detailed, and a lot of fun. It's going to be a long one and it's ongoing, so buckle in.
Tumblr media
Magic Jar by Anonymous (3211,Teen) Warnings: none Pairings: none
The mighty nine, if Caleb was a soul in a magic jar
Reccer says: It's a fascinating premise and an amazing thing to think about
Tumblr media
you'll let it go by pigflight (1590,Teen) Warnings: major character death Pairings: Delilah Briarwood & Laudna
What if Delilah convinced Laudna to take the shard?
Reccer says: wonderfully angsty and delicious

Hi! I read your one with vox machina and mighty Nein having a s/o from a modern world and was wondering as a Percy De Rolo simp if you could do one for first interaction with him
Oh like a Percy-centric x modern world y/n?? 🤩💕
Tumblr media
First thing’s first: holy hell, how da heck did you end up here??? And you have powers???
You may not have noticed him, but he noticed you and did you ever look out of place. Maybe it was sympathy, or he didn’t like how some others were eyeing you maliciously.
Either way, you’re quickly taken under the wing of Percy and the rest of the party but not without questions
Immediately, he can tell you’re not from around here, which raises his suspicions.
Everyone else finds you interesting and all, but Percy still has some lingering questions.
Phones, technology, sometimes your outfit, etc. eyes are only getting bigger the more you go on about life
Ultimately, Percy slowly starts to open up a bit about himself. And whatever he doesn’t open up about is explosive
Yet, it breaks his heart when he sees your frightened expression at his demeanor.
Cough, yes Orthax, cough
Though you comfort him, and are a supportive friend through the trek with the Briarwoods and his home, Percy can’t help but feel a gnawing at his heart
You’ve grown close, but do you think about him? Do you care for him? He knows you care for the others, but is he different to you?
Chances are, he’ll try to get you alone to talk to you. There’s that look on his face that just stands out to you, and you listen with a hammering heart.
“I know we’ve had our differences, but since we—or since I met you…nothing has ever been the same. For the better. And you have been monumental in that…”

everything about the gods and predathos is super complicated and these are just my thoughts. i get where characters are coming from with the gods have done some shit and maybe we would be better off if predathos chased them off or ate them, i’m not sure that’s the best plan. especially since the primes have done good things and helped people too, they’re a little more multi-dimensional than it seems.
like, there’s just too many risks, there’s no way of knowing that releasing predathos wouldn’t cause a ton of damage not just to the gods. and also like what would happen to clerics and paladins, would they lose their abilities since it’s tied to a god they worship? if predathos is as sapient as ludinus claims, what’s to stop it from munching down on exandria, since the gods are its prey and it knows that they derive power from worship, it can fuel up and kneecap the gods in the same moment to eat the gods that much easier. or, if predathos isn’t as sapient as ludinus is claiming, it would’ve been starving from being trapped in the moon for so long and what’s to stop it from munching down on the extremely close by buffet that is exandria? also like what happens to exandria if the wild mother is gone, cause while she is behind the divine gate, she is the goddess of nature and is very tied to the planet of exandria? there’s just too many questions about predathos and the consequences of it being released, that i think it’s too risky to let predathos out.
i also think it’s gonna be really good for bells bells to interact with the mighty nein. just like, a group of more seasoned adventurers who are also just as complicated. but i think it will really help them to have a group that is unafraid to poke and prod and call them out on shit in a way of saying we can be better together if we help each other and listen. but i also think it will absolutely help if they hear about the gods in more positive contexts, since specifically dorian and ashton are pretty anti gods. like they probably won’t change their minds which is fair, but just get more perspectives about them since they’ve been kind of.. resistant to the idea that some of the gods have done good and the world may be worse off without them.
just my thoughts, it’s a very complicated story on purpose so i don’t think there’s like one correct way to do this and of course it’ll depend on the dice rolls and how they decide to play it, which is gonna be very fun to see!

Analysis: Essek's Accent As The Shadowhand Fades
I'm watching the Essek Supercut again, and I noticed Essek's accent and when it starts to settle.
Watch the first few clips, until about about 0:4:40
youtube
Mostly this is just Matt settling into Essek's voice, but when he was first introduced, Essek had a very stern authoritative court voice. But once they were in the antichamber together, and Fjord says they need to check their underwear for accidents after that first interaction with the Queen and made him laugh, Essek slips into what we hear as his personal accent.
Essek really did just make up this version of himself to be as successful as everyone pushed him to be, and make really selfish choices to protect that act. But those personas ultimately felt like lies about himself. So what difference does it make protecting it with more lies? Which led himself down some really dark paths until Thw Mighty Nein discovered him and it all unraveled.
Essek is a dramatic theater gay who pulled off a character so well he couldn't stop playing him even when it was turning into a Shakespearean tragedy. Everything he says in these early days is so intensely dramatic and selling his vast accomplishments. Essek is giving them a list of reasons to respect him because he doesn't think his inner self is respectable. Essek always felt like it was the lies people loved and not him underneath, so what would hurt people more would be trying to stop. To be anything less than ruthless.
But this bunch of goofballs, whose very first direct comment to him was a self-depricating joke about being scared, they broke through. And what broke his heart most on that ship, was knowing he'd let them down with those lies. Because he'd let them see his true self, like he hadn't done for anyone in years (decades?), and they loved that one the most. Especially Caleb because they'd shared that instant attraction and interest Essek almost wasn't sure he could feel.
So after he was caught, even if Caleb was telling Essek he could choose to be better, he was obviously hurt and mistrustful and not calling. And feeling like he couldn't go back ate at him.
But then The Mighty Nein call on him again for help with their more dangerous thing ever. These weirdos are going to run headlong into danger not for gain or glory but because it stops someone else making a catastrophic mistake. And they want him to come with them. They want him to show them he's changed. And he has.
And even if they fight it, that attraction is still like magnets. They're so scared of hurting each other again or getting hurt, they can talk in meaningful coded riddles with each other, but not dare cross the threshold where they can hold that pull back. Where they'd have to find out if they enable or temper their worst impulses.
They didn't get there before they parted ways after Aeor. But we know that sometime in the last six months they let themselves pull together. They go back to Aeor to know what it feels like to just be together, the two of them, if no one at all was there. Caleb, down on one knee, holding a magic ring, "[Essek Thelyss], I know we're not relationship people, but will you date me for three months, and then we'll reassess?"
And it worked. Maybe being apart much of the time helps them get perspective on the world outside themselves and the freedom to lead two very different lives. The Essek who visits the man with green beans, no longer sounds quite like the Shadowhand did. He found how to use his power in the world more responsibly, when only a handful of people will hear about it, but they will listen so much closer, and see him more than any accomplishment. With the bustle and fear of the world shut out.

It seems that the gods are trying to “accumulate champions,” so to speak, and given what we know about the history of Predathos’s imprisonment, I don’t think it is entirely inconceivable that the remaining Crown Keepers could come back later to assist in the final battle, whenever that happens. Either that, or they could be enemies Bell’s Hells fight if they side with Predathos instead, but I don’t see that as a likely scenario.
No matter what, even if they do eventually side with Predathos, that will be after taking down Ludinus because there’s no way they’ll join him after everything that’s happened. I would love so much for the Crown Keepers to come back one more time before the end of the campaign. I know they’re a polarizing group, but I love them and I enjoy Aabria Iyengar as DM (I know, also “controversial,” but I don’t give a fuck because if the cast were not okay with everything she does, she wouldn’t be invited back, and I think that’s the part that all the haters are missing. Besides, I just think she’s a fun and creative DM and brings such a fun and positive energy to the table even when she is actively trying very hard to kill the players; and there’s absolutely no reason to not play fast and loose with the rules.) and want to see the rest of them interact with the main cast in some capacity. They’re an important part of the world and the story, and I also enjoy that the majority of that group were beginners when they started on Exandria Unlimited Prime. How can someone say they honestly do not enjoy the creativity and daring of someone like Aimee at the table who has no concept of what “can” or “can’t” be done in the game?? I also don’t mind things like allowing geas to be cast as a single action spell under the circumstances in the episode because it was a cool moment. Then again, when I DM, I change rules all the time circumstantially, make up new spells and items and for certain NPCs or even occasionally player characters, I’ll “downcast” spells like Aabria MAY or may not have done with the infamous Cone of Cold during the finale of EXU Prime, meaning reduce the damage dice or the effect in some way because there is no lower level similar choice to some of the spells.
Overall, I was thrilled with the last couple episodes! After the intensity of 91, the immediate flood of relief and joy I felt when Aabria strolled in like, “I think I’ll take it from here,” was such a welcome change because I knew it was just going to be something most likely simple and easily contained to a single session or two, and it was going to be fun. I also just like having guests because they add different layer to the dynamic. I do wish we could have more recurring guests like how Zahra and Kash came back over and over throughout the first campaign, but we can’t have everything we want. That was really my only meaningful critique of The Mighty Nein. I hoped so badly to see some of the characters again, but the only one who came back again at a later time was Shakastë, who was fun, of course, but I would have loved to see the others again as well, like Twiggy! She was intriguing and cute but also possibly sinister all at the time, and I wanted to know more about her! Anyway, I’m so glad I caught up! I was behind for a few months.

"are they just supposed to talk about their feelings all the time with their feelings being completely divorced from the world moving beneath their feet"
According to the vast chunk of the fanbase, yes. Caring about the lore is seen as a "cishet man thing" and most people watch Actual Plays (not just Critrole) for character interactions. The lore is usually not discussed unless it directly interacts with the characters or their backstories. I dare you to find one person in the Mighty Nein sect of the fandom that could tell you what the war that took up half the campaign was about.
😭 look i love a good character driven story as much as the next guy, and i certainly have my criticisms of how C3 could stand to afford BH a little more breathing room and time to spread their legs and dig into that personal stuff. and i get why that's a common expectation, because many DND games are very tailored to excavating the lives of the PCs until they save the world at the end. which is fine and good!
but like. we do in fact live in a society. and to me the appeal of DND has always just as much been to create and explore a world and see what is has to say as it is what the individual characters do. (and also shooting lightning). it's at its best when these two thing intersect, not just in individually packaged backstories but in the present, because the characters care about the world they're saving and the people in it as much as they do themselves, and the world cares about them as well. or if the story intends to say something about the lack of care on either side. also, "ask a character how they feel about this and they say how they feel about this and then you tell them how they should feel better and they listen" conversations have their place but they are like the least interesting base material to use to build your characters
