actually re: that last reblog, i think you could have a lot of comedy potential with the ex-zodiacs having a basic affinity for their respective animals even after the Curse breaks.

-Tohru finds a stray dog in need of medical attention but can't get close to it bc it's so scared of humans, so she calls Shigure and begs him to help. Shigure ends up driving several hours just to coax the dog into visiting a vet, then has to stay for several more hours bc he's literally the only human being the dog will trust. Kyo is less than happy about this but he can't do anything while the dog is growling at anyone who comes within ten feet of Shigure and itself. Shigure uses this to his advantage and gleefully annoys everyone in earshot.

-Momiji has a similar experience when the class pet (a rabbit) escapes and gets lost in the school. he nobly volunteers to search for it with his "rabbit-whispering powers," but unfortunately finds the rabbit dead after accidentally eating rat poison. Momiji feels so bad that he goes outside and catches a wild hare to replace it. no, Momiji doesn't see a problem with this. yes, the teacher, principal, and local animal control obviously object. it doesn't even fit in the cage.

-pets are a pretty loaded topic in all ex-zodiac households. the kids all go through a phase of begging for a pet, but obviously none of their parents want to regularly look at a physical representation of their old trauma. even people like Hatsuharu or Hatori aren't safe bc if someone like Yuki or Shigure pops in unexpectedly, you don't want them to find your pet mouse or dog staring back at them. i think most of the parents just have a no-pet policy, but i'm sure at least one household ended up going "fuck it" and getting a chinchilla.

-one time Rin got roped into chaperoning the twins' school field trip to a farm, and experienced every horse girl's dream when a ferocious barely tamed horse in the stables decided she was its best friend. cue the horse girl movie cliche montage except Rin fucking hated the attention and refused to pander to any of it. she ended up kicking the horse out of frustration, resulting in a stern lecture from the farmhands and a second (slightly awed) lecture from the teacher. Rin is no longer asked to chaperone field trips.

-Kyo was quickly banned from cat cafes as a teenager for obvious reasons, and to this day he can't convince his old hometown to lift the ban. the other Sohmas use this to their advantage regularly (especially Yuki, who always gets bitten by the cats but thinks it's hilarious to go with Tohru and wave at a fuming Kyo through the window).

Then & Now

Micah always had a bit of a sweet tooth, and was known for having a stash of goodies that he was willing to share with pretty much anyone who'd asked. Now, he will still share what he has with others, but will not take food from anyone unless it is in a sealed, untampered package. No donuts in the breakroom, no fancy bakery. He's knows it's not a great behavior, he's gonna be working on it.

Micah used to occasionally go out with friends for a drink. He will still go out with people, but he's not drinking anything other than bottled water. (Both because of the previous thing, but he also doesn't drink alcohol anymore.)

Micah loves coffee and tea, but is currently trying to cut back on the caffeine intake. Caffeine isn't great for his anxiety.

An interesting little character analysis test I like to do with media I enjoy is ask myself which character would be the most likely to vote for Trump. And I’m not allowed to just pick whoever the villain is, I have to really think about it. Which good character could be fooled by the propaganda? Which flawed character has a selfish, “my people first” nature that Trumpism could appeal to? It really gets you thinking.

So far, here are my answers:

Sonic: Rough and Tumble, plus…as much as it pains me to say it…maybe Knuckles? He’s been tricked into working for Eggman enough times that I feel like he could be tricked into voting for Trump too.

Pokémon: This was a tough one. Butch and Cassidy maybe? Otherwise, I’m not sure. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yu-Gi-Oh!: Gozaburo Kaiba, solely for the tax cuts. I don’t think he’d care about the other stuff. Maybe also Pegasus for the same reason and because he thought it would be funny. Rex and Weevil too, since they proved in Season 4 that they’re willing to ally themselves with sketchy people for the sake of power.

Yu-Gi-Oh! GX: Slade and Jagger.

Animaniacs: Mr. Plotz for the classic, Nils Neidhart for the reboot.

Pinky and the Brain: This is another tough one since there aren’t many recurring characters. Maybe Rudy from the Elmyra run?

Good Omens: Shadwell and Arthur Young. Hastur and Ligur too, as part of their jobs. Maybe Crowley if Hell pressured him into it, though he wouldn’t like it.

Teen Titans: Billy Numerous.

Sherlock Holmes: Mr. Woodley.

Fullmetal Alchemist (Brotherhood): Kimblee if he thought it would benefit him. Also possibly Maes Hughes? He fell for the propaganda regarding Ishval and seemed the least remorseful about his role in it, so I think he could be suckered into it. I do think the way Trump treats women would bother him though.

Feel free to switch out Trump for Brexit, Bolsonaro, or whatever your country’s far-right equivalent is if you’re not in the US and want to try this.

A little kid and his mother are trick or treating in another city, perhaps at some kind of event rather than knocking on doors, and the kid is dressed as Phantom. It’s very adorable, with his little ghost-shaped bucket and clearly homemade and already stained costume—listen, white only works if you can just fly over street grime or phase it out of your clothes—and his slightly I’ll fitting wig. The kid is SO happy to be out and about dressed as his favorite, and maybe even showed it off to Phantom back in Amity Park before his family left.

The hero, insert whoever you wish here, is probably in civvies and just enjoying the event. The kid, meanwhile, is so glad when people ask who he is so he can explain, and so- the hero gets to hear ALL ABOUT the local town hero who is probably pretty small time despite the kid’s clearly exaggerated stories. The hero certainly never heard of him, but the kid’s mom confirms that Phantom really was the town hero, despite some mixed reviews of the poor guy.

“Did you manage to show him your costume?” the hero asks.

“Yeah! We went down to the cemetery to leave flowers and I got to show him my costume.”

Wait. Cemetery? Maybe it was part of theme, because Phantom had to be named that for a reason, but… it sounded like…

The kid ignores the suddenly VERY still hero and instead turns to his mom. “Momma, do you think we should bring him candy? He doesn’t get to trick or treat like we do, and I can work super hard to get him a bunch!”

The kid’s mom just smiles. “We could, but maybe we should bring him something homemade. I bet he’d like something more filling, teen boys like him have a hollow leg.”

The kid wrinkles his nose. “Like Vernie with the pizza bagels?”

“Like your cousin, yes. We can make some cinnamon rolls and take them to his memorial, maybe bring some of the apples from your grandpa’s garden…”

The hero is pretty much forgotten as the two-part family wanders off, not quite intentionally forgetting the hero is there so much as the hero somewhat accidentally ended the conversation when they just froze and didn’t ask anything further.

Not that the hero didn’t want to. But they’d learn something very serious.

One—there was a small town hero they’d never heard of. Two—that hero was apparently a teen. Third—most pressingly, the teen hero was both beloved enough to have kids dressing up as him and dead enough to have a grave.

This… might require some phone calls.

There’s something incredible about your aus that they start out with fun characters and world building ideas and then we all start digging underneath. And inevitably end up with a story that, for me (and I’ll only speak for my own experience here), forces me to think deeply about the world around us and life in general. I’m kind of dooming my AUs into that every time because I have this imaginary rule to make every storyline .uh. unique? Like if I already have “a human who randomly befriended a mer” then all other characters has to be something entirely different. So I end up starting to dig out references and experimenting with contrasting concepts and genres. And usually it leads to everyone crying because nothing makes such a contrast with simple fun as complicated suffering heh?

also I've spent the last couple weeks reading some older historical romance novels, and my made up, wholly unverified hypothesis that in the 2000s romance authors finally grasped that the old-fashioned "no, don't! stop, you brute" etc. scenes were not really landing with audiences anymore. So they faced a conundrum about the future of the genre. Ultimately, I think they chose to quietly stop writing those heroes, and switch them out for a more sensitive model. Still dark and brooding! But with limits, often a Heart of Gold, and more general emotional intelligence.

Still, somewhere out there is a parallel universe where these authors decided to take the opposite approach---to write heroines as unhinged, cruel, impulsive, and emotionally ignorant as their heroes. I don't know if I want to live there, but I wouldn't mind a trip to their library sometime.

maybe his mother could be a shaman... and his father might be dead or disappeared under mysterious circumstances... maybe his mother is sick or dead too. not sure if he has siblings... mother being a shaman/psychic = another connection w monsters; see/communicate w ghosts, spirits; this kind of stuff can clearly be connected to the monsters lore. (I think western-style priests could also fit in the setting... briefly considered that for his father but idk if a priest & shaman would go together... maybe that could be another chara. KSJSKS *bangs my head against the wall* ive been accidentally biasing too many fantasy catholic/christian coded charas lately and its been infecting me... i actually think the aesthetic is cool now kms💀💀)

i was thinking maybe his father was a member of the org... i think he also has a history with monsters too... + maybe either his mom is sick and needs support or he'd have a younger sibling to take care of... as another incentive to join the "org" (pays well + needs money)... having a dependent is a good motive...

ok im going to ramble a bit abt the lore now.... all this is tentative/im not sure bc it's based on a dream... he works for this organization that's basically like a super powered "peace keeping" police force/FBI type deal that paints itself as like super heroic & good & all abt justice... but it's secretly an evil organization that oppresses/experiments on monsters and hides this from the officers(except the higher ups) and the public... i think maybe 1 of the officers' jobs is to defend the public from monsters? (the monsters include animal-like ones but also magical creatures w human-like intelligence) but they secretly capture + do cruel experiments on monsters... and oppress them in other ways(?)

+ in the dream there was a resistance group of fox/werewolf-like shapeshifting monsters... ok im just gonna copy what i wrote here:

just gonna add that the mc prob joined the police force bc of the childhood friend incident (wants to protect ppl so this doesnt happen again?) + he was prob also chosen as a target by the resistance group bc of this incident too... like it's all connected... the childhood friend incident is related to the monsters... only they (and the evil org) know what rly happened... mc is chosen bc of his ties to that friend/the incident... maybe the childhood friend was a monster..? I'm not sure lol but def connected. MC also has superpowers but I haven't decided for sure what they are (i rmbr his ability in the dream but idk if im going w that kdfjdj like it has to make sense...)

also in the dream the mc guy had like unassuming brown haired just some guy energy but after waking up i was considering other colors and pink popped into my head lmfao... also if he looks kinda like yeseo LOOK AWAY... I RLY TRIED OK... this is why i made him pink and not brown🤧

the mc also had like 2-3 fellow officer friends in the organization... i vaguely have an afterimage of what they looked like... 1 of them was a more srs type... mc himself is p laid back... kinda dense and disarmingly nice type lol. Also he's a young adult... maybe 24ish? (or older cuz i can do whatever i want)
