Gil’s heard of color words.

He never expected red to be so... so much, though!

“Wow,” he breathes, staring at the kid’s hair. The kid’s staring back just as much, though, and looks like he’s not sure if he should be happy or not.

The kid looks at his midmoth, eyes wide, and looks around, eyes still wide, and then looks at Gil. His eyes are still wide.

Maybe it’s the glasses?

“Hi, I’m Gil!” He bounces forward and holds out his hand, because they’re soulmates, and obviously that means they’re going to be best friends!

“Prince Tarvek of Sturmhalten,” the kid says, still staring at Gil. He shakes Gil’s hand, though. “I heard we’re going to be roommates?”

“Yeah!”

(Gil can’t look at the color red without feeling a little sick to his stomach from age eight to Paris.)

Personal: 9/12/19

unedited ramble time

Ok so I just know there's gonna be SOME KIND of discourse following this update and I'm gonna ignore ALL OF IT and say that mama bittles response was absolutely perfect for her character and the narrative and the southern mom aesthetic!!!

She was reasonably supportive? and did express her love clearly from the get go! But she didn't exactly resonate with ACCEPTANCE. her and coach's level of homophobia is still unclear but is DEFINITELY THERE. This was exactly what I wanted from them!!!

Mama bittles main concern was that bitty wasn't going to come home, or that he didn't feel SAFE coming home (which is a little true). And she constantly repeats some version of "we can work on this, we can talk about it, we can make it better" which is.....unclear in meaning. Is she referring to the publicly outed situation, or bitty's gayness in general? My first instinct is the latter and goddAMN that's a well meaning southern mom there.

Like real talk here I came out to my southern mom very unprepared and probably too early and she had a VERY SIMILAR reaction. "We can fix this. We can make it better. I want to help you and make sure you can be happy." It's not exactly hostile or cruel, but hysterically ignorant. "Being gay must be so hard. You must be so miserable being gay. You must be so unhappy and I would do anything to make it better. You can still be NORMAL."

My mom and mama bittle mean well and they love their children, but they didn't know how to love gay children. Their perception isn't necessarily that being gay is sinful or evil or diseased, but distinctly OTHER and a direct CAUSE of unhappiness and familial discord. They may be perfectly friendly to gay people and even have gay friends, but raising a gay child was nothing they had even considered.

Lucky for me my mom has come a long(ish) way since then and has definitely become more accepting of me. I have hopes for bitty and his mama as well.

That being said I LOVE that bitty didn't let her skirt around the subject as she clearly wanted to. She wanted him to come straight home, she talked around labeling his relationship with jack while still acknowledging her support and pride of them as a unit. Bitty stops her midmothering and says the words he has been terrified of for 20 years.

"Mama, I'm gay."

Not only that, but he asserts his position on his summer plans, something he has ALSO been putting off, and clearly establishes his relationship with jack. "I love Jack and I want to stay with him."

TL;DR: I really loved the narrative thread of this update and mama bittles response rly resonated with me and I'm just sO PROUD OF BITTY AND HE DESERVES THE WORLD!!!!!!
