#middle class status

Our political rhetoric in the US has also resulted in this misunderstanding of socioeconomic classification. People believing that they are a part of the middle class even when they aren’t doesn’t just apply to people who aren’t earning enough to be middle class, but also to people who earn too much. People in the top 10% or even 5% of earners, living in homes worth seven figures, will swear to their middle class status.
Politicians nod to that by constantly referring to their policy ideas for middle class people, knowing that almost everyone who hears them will believe that they are talking to them. It reinforces wrongheaded ideas about where people reside on the socioeconomic ladder, but more devastating it collapses class solidarity and lends to the erasure of poor people and their needs from our public and political discourse.
Ive noticed recently that my generation has... no concept of what the various economic classes actually are anymore. I talk to my friends and they genuinely say things like "at least i can afford a middle class lifestyle with this job because i dont need a roommate for my one bedroom apartment" and its like... oughh
You guys, middle class doesnt mean "a stable enough rented roof over your head," it means "a house you bought, a nice car or two, the ability to support a family, and take days off and vacations every year with income to spare for retirement savings and rainy days." If all you have is a rented apartment without a roommate and a used car, you're lower class. That's lower class.
And i cant help but wonder if this is why you get kids on tumblr lumping in doctors and actors into their "eat the rich" rhetoric: economic amnesia has blinded you to what the class divides actually are. The real middle class lifestyle has become so unattainable within a system that relies upon its existence that theyve convinced you that those who can still reach it are the elites while your extreme couponing to afford your groceries is the new normal.

a lot of times when americans start talking about the middle class you really get the sense that they dont realize that what they consider “just middle class” is actually very wealthy to the majority of the world. like how can you say this with so little self awareness

More SatoYura found family happenings in The Sims! Today: some family bonding, Yura graduating, and she and Satoru take the next step...
Let's get to it!
Tumblr media
Here's Megumi hanging out at Yura's apartment (they're next door neighbors) and Satoru was there too because of course (again, he's actually their property owner and also Yura's woohoo partner). I imagine it's almost a relief for the Fushiguros to have an adult nearby that can take care of them/listen to them/mentor them, and Yura just took one look at those kids and was like THEY'RE MINE NOW
And as much as I wanna joke that Satoru just goes along with what Yura wants, my headcanon for this is that he was the one who was financially taking care of the Fushiguros at the beginning after finding out there were two kids living alone in one of his apartments (similar to real canon!). But then once Yura decided to step in and play the mom role, he just naturally fell into being the dad of this makeshift family... kinda like main fic canon ♡( ◡‿◡ )
Tumblr media
I imagine in this photo both Yura and Megumi were picking on Satoru as usual, hence his face.
And in true makeshift family fashion, Satoru invited Yura + the Fushiguros to visit his big ass house. Cue family bonding time!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now I'm picturing them in the main fic having family bonding time over board games and such, because they definitely did that ༼ಢ_ಢ༽ Consider it canon!!
Putting the Fushiguros aside for now (they'll be back!), Yura has at last graduated from university!
(After the game pissed me off by tanking Yura's grades when I was playing in a different household and she was was basically held back in some classes, like bish tf is this (ง •̀_•́)ง )
So now Yura has a psychology degree that she can use to become a detective, heheheh. If this Yura won't be investigating curses, she'll be investigating real crimes instead!
Also, guess who went to her graduation ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) and also who started taking picture together like two best friends who sleep together but are also in love ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can bet your ass they've taken these exact same photos in the main fic
So anyway. With Yura having graduated, guess what? She finally got the nerve to ask Satoru to be her boyfriend!! No more woohoo partners who are helplessly in love, main fic Yura could never!!
...And like, immediately after, this prompt pops up in the screen:
Tumblr media
I am not joking, this was immediately after. Satoru does not waste any time.
(also she said yes)

hi im still here and freaking out about. far harbor. here's my weird 10-going-on-21 year old autistic synth extraordinaire being a catalyst for me infodumping faraday headcanons
tw for a mention of suicide & just. general institute dehumanizing bullshit
"No way you're that old." Shaun laughed halfheartedly, tried to keep his demeanor light. He bit his tongue to prevent himself from completing his thought -- Synths like you don't last that long. Records of decommissions and suicides took up more disk space in the Institute's archive of first-batch synths than anything else. Piles of evidence showing the mass production of self-aware beings was far from sustainable. But after years of hardware review and cognitive recalibration software tests, the gain-to-loss ratio evened out. Shaun recalled the single designation-B synth that was always pacing up and down the hall across from his and Father's dormitory. She was a good worker, Father had said. A sweet girl of fifty-four. Residence maintenance, the best of her crew. Her occasional bouts of hysterics were well worth her steady hands with the plumbing.
The breathy chuckle that came from Faraday was equally grim. "Not the first-first-batch, no. I was a couple years down the line. Maybe early '30s? I don't remember." He tapped a pen on his chin in thought.
"Designation K. Robotics handled me. I tended to work with gen-ones and twos -- stuck fixing busted hydraulics, usually. If I was really lucky, one would come in with a unique software error for me to pick apart." "Some of the human scientists liked to watch me work. You know, back then, we were novelties. But others probably wished I would just mop the floors or something instead."
Electricity thrummed in the background. Terminal upon terminal filled with Institute-proprietary materials: memory and horribly simplified emotional data from a machine older than any being on the whole island, barring Shaun's own mother. The makeshift archive was puny by Institute standards, but a goddamn miracle to anyone else in a 500-mile radius. Acadia's knack for technological innovation started to make sense. "They let you touch software? That was unheard of by my time. I'd get my ass handed to me any time I touched a computer."
"Well, there wasn't much choice back then. The Institute wasn't particularly well staffed. All of the founders were long dead, as were most of their children. Their grandchildren were running out of... options, when it came to reproducing a replacement workforce."
Shaun listened raptly as Faraday spoke, pleasantly surprised by how easily this information was given. His parents had made it sound like all Acadians were some unsolvable enigma -- as guarded against outsiders as their neighbors at the Harbor. Yet here he sat in the private room of one of the colony's three figureheads; and the man was perfectly content to reminisce to a stranger.
To a child. Shaun saw his appearance in the faint reflection the observatory window offered. He took this opportunity to push further while he still could.
"So then you left. Why?"
A despondent exhale. "Why did any of us leave?"

this school really deserves its impending doom bcs management is soooo tone deaf “but why do our students choose to go to uni in their own city and out of the 2 they choose the non russell group one why aren’t we doing something to support them to aim higher 🤔” could it possibly be that this school is in one of the most deprived areas of the city/nationwide and thats a significant factor affecting academic achievement so students default to the uni w lower entry requirements theyre likely to get into? or maybe that our predominantly immigrant students and their families don’t share the culture of moving out and living independently at 18? that their immigration status and overseas qualifications affect their entry requirements ? that many of them are responsible for their families and don’t want to leave them? that its more affordable to stay home and not be in even more debt by taking out a maintenance loan to stay alive? the girls who aren’t allowed to leave home before marriage? what a truly confounding phenomenon that our students don’t go to a russell group uni it must be a very bad look that we get 90% students in higher education or formal training after college but not the ‘best’ choice. But what do i know i guess !
#p#theres no institutional racism and no racial and ethnic segregation here guys don’t worry. our students have equal opportunities!#unreal how tone deaf that whole email was#asking what we’re doing wrong where we’re going wrong#as if its no achievement to consistently send off students to uni regardless of status or rank#and like we have loads of students who Do move out and go to very good unis and even oxbridge#loads of students going into medicine and engineering and law#and loads of students whom we had to fight and advocate for to their families to even allow them to go to uni!!!!!!#you’re looking at one of the shittest areas and one of the shittest schools and acting like we’re getting disappointing results#shove your british values up your ass fix your country#on the same note as shitting themselves over ofsted and getting less than a good rating My brothers ofsted is comparing our school to#schools in the posh neighborhoods (some of the most middle upper class areas nationwide also)#and instead of seeing this as an opportunity to challenge standards and place value on everything we do right by our students#they’re trying to get the stats equal to those other schools and its having tangibly adverse effects on achievement engagement and attendanc#i’m sick from frustration with this damn schools leadership u are all shit#they should maybe possibly potentially look at what has actually improved student achievement and whose ideas they were#hint. not the white british leadership team’s#but i digress .

“I felt like a bona fide clown. One of them explained that communism was a political-economic system, but i wasn’t listening. I was just digging on myself. I had been hooping and hollering about something that i didn't even understand. I knew i didn’t know what the hell communism was, and yet i'd been dead set against it. Just like when you’re a little kid and they get you to believe in the bogeyman. You don't know what the hell the bogeyman is, but you hate him and you’re scared of him.
I never forgot that day. We're taught at such an early age to be against the communists, yet most of us don’t have the faintest idea what communism is.”

Can I just say I am so mad that my latest AU brainrot is set in some alternative history but very clearly Regency Era inspired world, because that prohibits SicIre dancing to "Uptown Girl" at their wedding celebrations. Emanuela was right to decline the invitation for the whole family, before there could have been any incidents during the "She's getting tired of all her high class toys // And all the presents from her uptown boys" lines.
