"Jug End Barn '51"
Late night socializing during Memorial Day weekend 1951 in South Egremont, Massachusetts.
The Jug End Barn Lodge was a premiere Berkshire destination for all seasons with swimming pools, tennis courts, a rifle range, bowling alley, dance hall, numerous restaurants and skiing and ice skating in the winter.  The name comes from the German “jugend” meaning “youth”.

1950s Peg Leg Bates Catskills Country Club Sign
flickr
1950s Peg Leg Bates Catskills Country Club Sign by Vinnie DeVille Via Flickr: Vintage image of a highway sign for the Peg Leg Bates Country Club in the Catskills Mountain Borscht Belt in Upstate New York. At the time this was the only black owned hotel for people of color in the Jewish Alps. From a different time - indeed. This found photograph is from the private collection of an unknown and/or unknowing art collector. It’s always a thrill when it’s from Vinnie DeVille!

Here’s one of the beautiful staterooms onboard RMS Queen Mary! Includes a couple of writing desks, working punkah louvers, and a fully functioning bathroom. We also take a look at some items that you might have once found in a cabin.

OLA now handles most of the food in the hotel, from the pool bar to the lobby bar as well as their main restaurant, and while the food is more expensive than it was the last time I was here, it is better. Having those daily food/beverage allowances definitely helped too.
Take, for instance, the salmon poke quinoa bowl I enjoyed after a nice, long swim on Monday morning, and it was just what I wanted: the salmon was delicious and the mix of fruit and vegetables were satisfying while being light, which is just what I wanted. I’m so glad I went to the actual pool bar to have this bowl, as it would stay closed for the rest of our stay for reasons I don’t know. The lobby bar was open instead, however, and I enjoyed their tuna tartare on Wednesday before I went out to venture to the Art Deco Historic District down on Ocean Drive.
I also wanted to note that The Gates has one of the nicest hotel lobbies I’ve seen that isn’t a super high-end or explicitly historic space (and this is in the new tower, so presumably it’s not historic, but I’m not completely sure). I love the high ceilings, and I dig the vibe that the photography from a local artist conveys.

Restoring Ocean View's Rooftop
See the progress as Madison Resorts restores Wildwood Crest's Ocean View Motel's caved-in Blast-Off! rooftop.
The Ocean View’s rooftop on Rambler Avenue in Wildwood Crest is the last existing example of Blast Off! architecture remaining in America. Unfortunately, a heavy snowstorm did permanent damage to the already stressed roof. Madison Resorts purchased the property and are dedicated to restoring the roof to its original glory, so future generations may be able to appreciate this slice of Doo Wop…
