Emma was antsy, filled to the brim with nervous energy that she didn’t know what to do with. She tried going for a long run but it only served to increase her agitation.

She tried telling herself that she was just nervous because Killian was out of reach and under the protection of two agents that she barely knew. A small voice in her head kept reminding her that Killian was spending a romantic night under the stars with another blonde, but she pushed it back. That could not be the source of her worries. That would mean she had feelings, something she refused to think about.

She had already decided that making idle chit-chat with the other girls was out of the question. Luckily for both of them, Ruby was doing a far better job of blending in with the other women than Emma was. She had managed to form a tentative ‘friendship’ with Tamara somehow, for which Emma was grateful. It meant that she wouldn’t have to spend time with her pretending to be interested in law.

Emma found herself becoming even more agitated thinking about that. As an FBI agent, she knew that Tamara had never practiced law and that most of her legal knowledge had probably come from one of the hundreds of generic legal dramas on TV. As Emma Fowler though, she had to fake naivety on the subject.

Emma was still chomping at the bit so she headed outside to check in with Robin and Will in the RV. She needed to see for herself that Killian was safe, refusing to let her mind wander to thoughts of what Killian and the micro-blonde were doing.

Emma reached for the door to the RV just as a loud raucous came from inside. Robin and Will were highly entertained by whatever they were watching on the screens, but quickly silenced themselves as Emma stepped inside. She made for the opposite end of the RV, giving only a quick glance at the live feed.

Admittedly the campsite was gorgeous, with plush cushions laid out for seating and lights strung up through the trees. A plate full of fruit was laid out on a picnic table next to a miniature chocolate fountain, which Emma could only assume was being powered by a hidden generator.

What really caught Emma’s eye, though, was the sleeping area. It was a large, teepee-like structure made up of cream linens and adorned with silk drapings inside. Rustic candlelit lanterns were hanging from a log that ran the length of the tent, illuminating the space and making the inside appear warm and spacious. The crew had even gone through the trouble of laying down a wooden platform to block out the dirt and mud.

There was one only one cot, and while it wasn’t tiny, it would still make for close sleeping quarters. Emma’s stomach knotted at that thought.

Just as she was about to address Robin, she heard a small giggle come through the speakers. She looked up to see Killian squatting behind Tink, with his arms wrapped around her. Tink’s face was beet red as she leaned back into him and Killian, for his part, didn’t seem to mind being so close to her.

Emma needed something else to focus on. She sat at a screen in the back of the RV trying to remain out of hearing range from the feed. She refused to be curious about what the two of them were doing together.

The screen in front of her came to life and she muddled through files on the FBI’s hard drive. Almost an hour in, Emma had looked through a month’s worth of surveillance on Tamara prior to the show, with very little takeaway. It wasn’t until she got to the last three days of surveillance that she realized that many of photos featured the same man.

His back was always to the camera, but he wore the same green hooded coat each day and, while he never interacted with Tamara directly, it couldn’t be a coincidence that he was nearby so often.

“Guys, come here,” Emma called out.

Robin and Will trudged up, trying to crowd around computer in the cramped space.

“Do either of you know who this man is?” she asked.

Emma made a notation in the file to further investigate the mystery man.

Emma continued to go through files as the boys returned to the video feed of Killian. She pulled up Tamara’s finance reports, taking stock of the fact that Tamara was continuing to receive income, but from an untraceable source.

“Look at ‘em go!” Her musings were interrupted by Will yelling at the screen in front of him, followed by a muffled thump. “Oi, what was that for?”

Emma glanced up to see Robin giving her an apologetic look. When she leaned back to peek at the monitor, she saw Tink straddling Killian on the cot. Every muscle in her body tensed. Images of Walsh and the red head began floating through her mind.

As she felt her eyes begin to sting, something inside her snapped. She was letting herself get too emotionally involved with Killian, and she needed to distance herself. A voice in her head screamed for her to flee but she was trapped. She needed this investigation to be over so she could go back to New York and leave all of this behind her. She needed to do what she did best. Run.

“Robin, I need one of those burner phones. Now.”

Killian’s face was beginning to hurt from the forced laughter and fake smiles. When the car pulled up to the campsite and everyone disembarked, Killian attempted to keep his distance from everyone, determined to make it through the evening with as little social interaction as possible.

Mary Margaret seemed to register his trepidation about the entire thing, for which he was grateful, but her husband had clearly missed the memo. David kept suggesting things for Killian and Tink to do together to increase the romance.

They had only been there for about twenty minutes before David took it upon himself to push the two single cots together and swap out the existing comforters with a single larger one. It was a move meant to force cuddling.

Killian was close to telling David what he really thought of the entire ordeal, ready to storm off and walk home alone through the woods. Mary Margaret beat him to it though.

“David!”

“What?” David asked. “I was given very specific instructions from our mutual boss to ensure that Killian and Tink here enjoyed their evening away.” David watched his wife stoically like he was attempting to will her into submission or, perhaps, understanding.

She then whittled the larger stick she had picked up into a dull point.

Mary Margaret and David had apparently finished their squabbling and had begun filming again, standing back to watch with curious expressions on their faces. David looked to the lighter fluid and matches that he had strategically placed earlier that day.

How to do the Scenic Rim Food Trail in one day

A verdant region of volcanic calderas and virgin rainforest, cattle country and cool little country towns, the Scenic Rim is home to a bounty of growers and graziers, brewers and boutique producers. Combined, it makes for the stuff of gourmet food tour dreams. 

In fact, if you were dropped, Survivor-style into the middle of the Scenic Rim… well it wouldn’t be much of a show. You’d probably end up putting on weight and refusing to leave.

Pack an appetite, a cold bag and bring some cash for the random roadside food stalls for the foodies’ version of the perfect Sunday drive. Or better yet, stay over for a more languorous weekend of hunting and gathering with this guide to the Scencic Rim Food Trail.

Summer Land Camels, Harrisville

Prepare to be seriously checked out when you arrive at the world’s second-largest camel dairy, Summer Land Camels on your food tour of the Scenic Rim. Curious dromedaries with supermodel lashes will lift their heads from grazing the paddock for a long hard look.

We recommend taking the farm tour, then ducking into the café inside a typical Queensland farm cottage. Order a camel cappuccino, camel milk ice-cream or their range of cheese; from a soft fromage blanc perfect for topping tacos, to a hard cheddar.

Oppy’s Fruit and Veg, Boonah

In a historic old brick butter factory in the little farming town of Boonah, Oppy’s offers the antithesis of supermarket shopping. Owners and farmers Stuart and Sandra Opperman sell their own pumpkins and watermelons as well as lots of other locally grown, chemical-free fruit and veg.

There’s usually something delicious out for tasting – a ripe melon or Kooroomba Gully chutney, one of Di Jackson’s jams, or goat’s cheese from Naughty Little Kids, as well as shelves and fridges packed with local Scenic Rim milk, honey, olives and more.  

Arthur Clive’s Bakehouse, Boonah & Aratula

Next on our food tour of the Scenic Rim is a good ol’ country bakery. Arthur Clive’s is owned by the Pennell family who’ve been baking in the Scenic Rim since 1936.

Arthur Clive’s, named for the patriarch of the family, may look like the quintessential ‘lamingtons and custard slice’ bakery, but it has tapped into the food zeitgeist with its range of wild fermented sourdoughs and dark Swiss fruit loaves. Even the brekkie burger’s been given a makeover, served on brioche.

Old school pie appreciators highly rate the pies, with their explosively flaky, buttery pastry. The secret to their tasty pies? They are made from locally farmed meat slow-cooked in a housemade Worcestershire sauce (the recipe handed down from Grandfather Arthur Clive). Shhh!

The Dugandan Hotel, Dugandan

You can’t beat a classic country pub and “the Dugie” outside Boonah ticks all the boxes. Built in 1880, it boasts wide shady verandas, a fireplace for cool Scenic Rim winters and a beer garden known as ‘the chook yard’ with bucolic views (but no chickens!).

The typical pub grub menu is dominated by generously-sized Queensland-bred steaks that come with provenance and tasting notes, while the bar has 13 different beers on pour, plus regular craft guest beers. Cheers!

The Overflow Estate 1895

Part of 1600-hectare working farm, the Morgan and Usher family planted vines in this dreamy location on a small isthmus of land jutting into the Wyaralong Dam in 2010. There’s a smart architect-designed cellar door with tables on a covered deck looking through the trees to the dam.

Take a seat at the café serving cheese and charcuterie platters and simple tasty lunches. Finish off your lunch with a tasting of their wines, made from hand-picked grapes – of course!

The Shed Café, Rathdowney

Continuing on our food tour, drive through the picturesque olive grove in Rathdowney to this little café on the hill where the outside tables are dressed with red and white checked cloths. We recommend ordering owner Lou Cheevers’ fantastically light warm scones with cream and jam and a pot of tea.

The large shed is packed with jars of traditionally-brined olives as well as fruity extra-virgin olive oil and tapenades. Also take time to check out the lovely collection of kitchenware, cookbooks and table linen handpicked by the multi-talented Lou.

Classi di Cucina, Cooking Classes, Rathdowney

Back in the dark days before all pizza restaurants had woodfired ovens Pietro Agnoletto set the bar high at the University of Queensland’s’s Pizza Café with his authentic wood-fired pizza. He retired some years ago to 40 rolling hectares at Rathdowney with wife Desley and a herd of wily alpaca.

On the first Sunday of every month, Pietro fires up the wood oven and does a class in both Neapolitan and Roman-style pizza making, followed by a convivial lunch with beer or wine.

Green Lane Coffee Plantation, Tamborine Mountain

Crop to cup coffee is on pour at this family owned micro-lot coffee shop/plantation at Tamborine Mountain where the beans are handpicked and roasted on site. There are around 650 trees on site, all Arabica and grown chemical-free.

To learn more about the growing and roasting process, book a tour of the plantation on a Sunday. Then back it up with breakfast or lunch in the greenery-shrouded café, including of course precision-made coffee.

How to Make a Rustic Phone Charging Stand from a Slab of Hardwood

I love the idea of combining modern technology with natural textures. I keep my tablet in a case made from an old linen-covered notebook, and my sleek and shiny DSLR in a worn brown leather bag. So, I wanted to make a simple place to house my smartphone, while warming it up a bit. I went with the most natural thing I could think of: a big slab of forest tree. 

I like this design for a DIY wooden smartphone charging station because it fits the charging cable nicely, but it isn't stuck in place, so you can remove and use it elsewhere without the stand.

Step 1. Select a wood for your project. Choose something that's at least 1 ½ "thick and a piece that’s beefy enough to support a phone while charging. We're using a piece of 8/4 live-edge cherry. Crosscut your wood around 5", or slightly wider than your phone. 

Step 2. Next, draw a line across the center of the width of the wood. This will eventually line up with your charging cable jack in your phone. Then, mark 1 ½ inches back from the front edge. Use this cross-hatch as your center point to drill a stopped hole with the 7/8" Forstner bit, 1" deep. This will become the thumb hole for your charging station.

Step 3. Unplug your table saw, and load up a table saw blade with a flat-bottomed tooth pattern. Tilt the blade to 15° and replace the throat plate. 

Clamp or screw a long piece of scrap wood to your table saw's miter gauge. This will allow you to accurately make a series of cuts into the wood, while keeping your hands safely away from the blade. 

Step 4. Clamp your charging station to the wooden miter gauge extension. Set the blade height so it cuts 1" deep into the wood, matching the depth of the thumb hole. Carefully make an angled pass one inch deep, aligning the cut to the center of the hole you drilled in Step 2. 

Adjust the position of the work-piece along the fence and make another angled cut, aligned to the back of the thumb hole. Then, make several repeated passes and clear out the remaining waste. Before moving on, ensure this slot is wide enough to hold your device.

Step 5. Chuck a 3/8" bit into your drill, and place it in the angled slot, matching the 15° angle. With a scrap piece underneath, drill a hole through the slot through the bottom of your wood. This will allow you to insert the Lighting or Micro USB end of your charging cable.

Step 6. Depending on the size of your workpiece, you may want to trim it for a more proportionate look. We cut ours to 3" deep. 

Step 7. Sand the entire piece up through 220 grit, and finish with Danish oil, following the manufacturer's directions. After allowing your project to cure, add 4 rubber feet to the bottom. This allows you to raise the charging station up a bit, so the cable can slide underneath without any wobble.
