Here's an old piece I was really proud of featuring Mickey and Lou from Far Cry New Dawn in the graffiti style of the Highwaymen. It was definitely out of my comfort zone at the time.

Today is the 5th Anniversary of Far Cry New Dawn!

I watched the Story Trailer again recently, and that reminded me that Joseph says something in the video...

After all I’ve done, and after all we’ve been through, you’ve come seeking help... from me? You must be truly terrified.

...that isn’t in the game. I don’t know if it’s because it was only recorded for the trailer or because it ended up being cut, but I think it was a great line and it’s a shame he doesn’t say it in the sequel.

The Voice’s prophecy was fulfilled and Joseph was right about the Collapse, so he feels vindicated and, in my opinion, doesn’t regret everything he’s done, but the line suggests that he’s at least come to realize that, maybe, the people of Hope County had a good reason to be upset, after all. Seventeen years ago, he believed accepting his help was the only logical option for them, but he apparently now understands that, from their point of view, seeking his assistance was always far from being the obvious choice. And if they do it anyway, that means the situation really is desperate...

Now, when he says “you”, it could be plural and referring to Prosperity as a whole, but if it’s singular, since the Security Captain has no history with the Father and he’s not an enemy to them at all (basically just a strange old man with family problems who gives them superpowers), the line was most likely not directed at them. If it was just for the trailer, maybe he’s addressing the players, but if it was supposed to be in the game, I wonder which character he could be talking to. Was one of the Captain’s allies, an enemy of Eden’s Gate, going to have to meet and speak with Joseph in an early version of the story?

New Eden and Prosperity (sort of) join forces against the Highwaymen in New Dawn, but the Captain is there to act as an intermediary. Joseph directly interacting with Kim, Jerome, or any other character from Far Cry 5, though? I highly doubt they would have become friends, but it certainly would have been interesting, and I would have loved to see that!

There’s another line in the trailer that isn’t in the game (“Power is the new currency, and thanks to your weakness, it’s easy to get rich”) but Mickey says, “The only currency in this world is power” in New Dawn, which I think is quite similar. Joseph’s unreleased line, however, doesn’t really have an equivalent.

I finished Far Cry New Dawn and I'm uhhhhhh writing a thing 👀

This is just a snippet. I'm like planning an actual storyline and stuff. Look out world, the bitch is back LMAO

Mickey crawled, her gloved hands scrabbling across the rich dirt where she laid so many of Joseph’s people to rest. In her mind’s eye, she imagined them decomposing, composting the flora until it was rich and mushrooms grew out of their eye sockets and flowers converged over their empty ribcages. She didn’t want to see it, but the image persisted, like a film over her eyes. The image seemed to melt suddenly as she slowed. Blurry. No- those were tears. She saw Lou’s face, so calm and serene in death in a way that it never had been in life. She’d held her fury close, never parting from it for long. 

It had been the death of her. 

Mickey woke with a start, her hand gripping the knife she kept by her cot. 

5 years and 500 miles between her and a bad dream, and her stomach still ached with the memory of bullets. She let the knife clatter to the floor and gripped her right side like the wound was still fresh. Swore she could feel it there, blood bubbling up slow between her fingers, but when she pulled her hands away to look, they were dry and chapped and as clean as they could be.

These two were really fun to draw!! There was an instinctual desire within me to connect murderous twins from one media to murderous twins from another media.

That’s very sad news, and you perfectly summarized what his art brought to the world of Far Cry New Dawn.

In the game, there’s a mural I particularly like, in form and substance, and find quite memorable. It’s located at “The Meat Grinder” and was either drawn by Zïlon himself or heavily inspired by his work. Story-wise, it’s the most complete source of information we have on The Twins’ backstory, and visually speaking, it’s so intricate and colorful. No matter where you look, there’s something to see.

In many ways, I think it’s an impressive painting.

In rememberance

Zïlon, the Quebecois artist who drew the Highwaymen's murals in Far Cry New Dawn passed away a few days ago.

I wish I had the proper words to express how I felt seeing his work in the game for the first time, his style added an entirely new depth and flavor to the game that really made it feel worthwhile. He brought beauty to the apocalypse. I hope I will get to see his work in person one day.

"I'm not letting you leave. Neither you, or your sister are getting outta here alive." Cristina tells the older twin. Knife in hand, ready to use or not. It doesn't matter if she stabs her or has to drown her to end the cycle of violence. They have done nothing but cause trouble in her home.

"Fine rabbit, you wanna finish this? Fine! We'll finish it! You and me." Mickey tells her, "Hate to send you home dead to your family."

"I'm coming outta this alive." she retorts, feeling every bone in her body tense up from all the anger, pain, and unbearable rage, "This ends tonight."

I noticed something else regarding Far Cry New Dawn promotional content, this time in the Announcement Trailer.

In the video, The Twins threaten the people of Prosperity before brutally executing someone. They say:

Mickey: Listen here, rabbits. You need to understand something: the only currency left in this world is power. We’re going to take everything from you, starting with your home. And if we can’t take it... Lou: ...we’ll break it.

Mickey doesn’t finish her sentence because she expects Lou to, and we can assume that what Lou adds is exactly what Mickey would have said had she been alone. There’s a great connection and synergy between them.

In the game, the moment they threaten Prosperity happens differently. First, they don’t come right at the gate but stay at a distance. Secondly, instead of beating someone to death with her helmet (which is something she still does in the prologue), Lou places an unpinned grenade in a child’s hands. Finally, they only talk to Carmina and the Captain, and part of what they say, while very reminiscent of the speech we heard in the trailer, isn’t identical to it:

Mickey: The only currency in this world is power. You-- you made us look weak. That ends now. We are going to take everything that you hold dear. Starting with your home. Lou: And if we can't take it, we'll break it.

The major difference here is that Mickey’s sentence was over, and I don’t think she expected Lou to say anything. Yet, she’s barely done talking when her sister decides to speak... much to Mickey’s annoyance, it seems, as this is her reaction:

The Twins remain very connected and don’t really seem to be in conflict in the game, but I think it’s interesting that Mickey rolls her eyes because of Lou’s comment. Yes, they can still be physically and mentally synchronized, but sometimes, they can also have slightly diverging opinions and get annoyed with each other because, at the end of the day, they’re separate people with different personalities. In my opinion, compared to what the trailer originally showed, the final version of the scene humanizes them more.
