Rundown
Haas F1 Team attended the post-season young driver test at Yas Marina Circuit, Abu Dhabi on Tuesday with Mick Schumacher behind the wheel of the VF-20. Having had his first outing with the American squad in FP1 during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Schumacher, who will race full-time for Haas F1 Team in 2021, was one of fifteen drivers participating in the test to bring to a close track activities for the year. The 21-year-old German recorded 125 laps around the 5.554-kilometer (3.451-mile), 21-turn circuit. Morning running totaled 53 laps, utilizing the Pirelli C4 tire throughout, as Schumacher built on the 23 laps he accumulated in FP1 last Friday. Working on the balance of the VF-20, with a mixture of low and high fuel runs, Schumacher's fastest lap in the morning was a 1:40.106. The afternoon plan focused on gaining additional mileage with longer runs on the C4 before a switch to the softer C5 compound for comparison runs. Schumacher added another 72 laps to his tally, with a fastest lap of 1:39.947. Fernando Alonso of Renault ended the day top of the timesheets courtesy of a 1:36.333 lap.

"I feel pretty good. Obviously I'm very happy I managed to do so many laps. It's not always a given in testing. We focused on a good amount of laps, and a valuable amount of laps, which was very positive. The key point from today was just to understand the tires a little more; for that, the long runs were very good. I think we achieved that, and I now have a pretty good knowledge of what I need to do, although the tires might be a bit different next year. I feel very comfortable. I know the team's happy, so that's good. I really was so happy to be in the car and it was so much fun to drive. I'm really looking forward to next year."

"So today was obviously the first full day of Mick being in the car. We really focused on him understanding the car, and then adjusting the car balance to suit and to get the best out of Mick. We really didn't focus on one lap performance or anything like that; we simply wanted to get him to understand various things like different fuel loads. We also focused on tire management on high fuel runs. It was really good for Mick to experience long runs, both at high track temperature and towards the end of the day when track temperature was then at its coolest. We ran both C4 and C5 tires on long runs. He was making lots of adjustments by himself and using the tools available to him. So today was a very good day. He completed 125 laps. His fitness was absolutely no problem. He completely understood the program in terms of what we wanted to achieve today. He also did eleven starts from the F2 pitlane. His procedures improved as the day continued, to the point he was at a pretty good level. All in all we're very happy. His attitude was excellent, as was his understanding of the program, his understanding of the car and working with the engineers to improve his tire management. It was excellent. We're very happy."

Mick Schumacher makes Mercedes F1 test debut 10 years after father drove for team | 2023 Spanish Grand Prix
Mick Schumacher made his test debut with Mercedes today, just over 10 years on from his father’s last test drive with the team. The former Haas driver joined Mercedes in a reserve role this year. He was driving at the Circuit de Catalunya to trial slick tyres from Pirelli that are in development for 2024. The tyres are intended to work without requiring pre-heating with tyre warmers before going on the car. Pirelli will continue to test the blanket-free tyres this year, with other teams getting opportunities to gain experience of them after the summer break. Schumacher was out for the second day of the test, taking over driving duties from George Russell who tried the tyres yesterday. Ferrari is also in action at the circuit today, Carlos Sainz Jnr having taken over from Charles Leclerc who drove for them on the first day. Schumacher’s father Michael had a long history with Mercedes. He was part of their junior driver development programme and World Sports-Prototype championship team in the nineties. At the end of his F1 career Schumacher raced for Mercedes from 2010 to 2012, and the year after did some promotional runs for the team. His last outing was in May 2013, when he did a demonstration lap of the Nurburgring’s full Norschleife layout in Mercedes’ 2011 car. He suffered serious brain injuries in a skiing crash seven months later. The most interesting of uninteresting races - Sakhir GP preview
A couple of weeks ago, it felt that F1’s final triple header of 2020 was going to be a quiet affair. After Mercedes and Hamilton wrapped up their respective titles, it seemed that the main story for the 3 races in the Levant would be the battle for 3rd in the constructors’ championship. Yes, there were still races to be won, and some seats up for grabs, and the Perez-Albon axis would be a focal point for pundits, but it felt very much like the twilight of the season.
Well, F1 comes at you fast (literally), and even more so in 2020, it seems. On Sunday, Hamilton’s 11th win of the season was overshadowed by Grosjean’s massive crash and the ensuing conversation over safety and what went well and not so well. After the race, it felt like this topic and Grosjean’s recovery would be the main story of the week, but then, for the third time, a driver caught COVID, and this time, it was the champion-elect.
Lewis Hamilton tested negative three times during the race weekend, but started feeling symptoms on Monday morning, and had two positive results on that day. The announcement the following day sent the F1 world into a spin. It would be the first time since Brazil 2006 that an F1 grid would not include Hamilton, and, given his dominance throughout the season, any race without him suddenly becomes a much more open and intriguing affair.
But even more crucial than that was the question on everyone’s mind: with Hamilton ruled out of (at least) the Sakhir GP, who would step in for him at Mercedes?
The reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne was the most obvious choice. Already acquainted with the team and the car (at least via simulator), the Belgian was wrapping up preseason testing for the upcoming Formula E season and was already planned to fly to Bahrain anyway. But the Mercedes hierarchy had him as a number two choice, as this was a major opportunity for them to test the heir apparent to the team in their actual car.
It is no secret that Mercedes reached out to Williams to enquire about the availability of George Russell for 2021, before making the decision of giving Bottas another 1-year extension. The Grove-based team told them they did not wish to release him from his contract for next year, but there was no doubt that Russell was a strong candidate to take one of the Silver Arrows seats for 2022. And if Hamilton decides to continue into the new F1 era that will start in that season, then it is Bottas’ seat that will be, once again, in question.
This was, then, the perfect opportunity for Mercedes to evaluate their protege in an actual race environment, and have him go toe-to-toe with his main rival for that seat. I don’t think anyone in the team is expecting Russell to beat Bottas outright, but he won’t need to either. If he stays close to the Finn in the timesheets and impresses the team with work ethics and commitment, he will be taking a huge step towards securing that dream move.
Bottas, on the other hand, will be perfectly aware of this, which puts some additional pressure on him to perform. He cannot afford to be beaten by his one-weekend teammate; that would absolutely seal his fate for 2022. Ultimately, there might not be much that he can do to help his cause. Even if he does win the race and keeps Russell comfortably at bay, it will be the youngster’s performance that will be of more interest to the team. If Russell does well enough, there is nothing Bottas can do.
It is crazy that a race at the tail end of the 2020 season can have such deep ramifications into the 2022 season, but this has been a crazy year in more ways than one. This one-off race in a crazy layout of the Sakhir circuit will see two debutants and a stand-in for the champion-elect, while two drivers recover from health issues. There will be plenty of interest to see how all these permutations will affect the weekend, and what these out-of-place drivers can achieve. And, most importantly, we might even see the Mercedes 2022 line-up take shape.
Talking points
•  Another driver under pressure to perform this weekend will be Latifi, whose seat is not in danger but that will be left to look silly if he is beaten by his teammate. Also, the shuffle up front puts even more pressure on Albon, who will be expected to beat his good friend George, since he is much more accustomed to his car. As if he needed any more pressure on him.
•  Stoffel Vandoorne ended up being the big loser in the Mercedes decision. The Belgian driver just does not seem to get a lucky break with F1: after two years at a McLaren close to its lowest point, he doesn’t even get the chance to fulfil his role as reserve driver for the best team ever in the history of the sport. Perhaps it is best that he focuses his career elsewhere, as his FE car also seems to be capable of fighting for wins and getting into the title fight.
•  Wednesday morning saw most of the big announcements of the week in terms of driver swaps, but the best news of that day was Grosjean’s release from hospital. After that enormous scare, it was fantastic to see him walk out with a huge smile on his face, and hearing him say that he wanted to return for the Abu Dhabi GP, for what will be his F1 swan song. Absolutely nothing will beat seeing him back on the grid for that.
•  His vacated seat at Haas, as well as Russel’s vacated seat at Williams, will provide the opportunity to two drivers to have their debut in F1. Pietro Fittipaldi will stand in for the Frenchman at Haas; the Brazilian is the team’s reserve driver and spent the year in the garage with them, so will be well acquainted with the team members and their procedures. The same can be said for Jack Aitken, who will run for Williams. After an unlucky run with Campos in this F2 season, this will be a richly deserved reward.
•  Fittipaldi’s run with Haas will not represent an opportunity for him to stake a claim on one of their seats for next year, as the team announced their line-up, confirming the rumours that had been circulating for a few weeks. Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin, respectively first and third in the F2 championship, will be driving in F1 for the American team. The return of the Schumacher name was expected and it will be great to see Mick test his talent at the highest level. He hasn’t blitzed the field this season, but rather has impressed with consistency and regularity, traits that bode well for a future champion.
Mazepin arrives with the tag of paid driver - which isn’t in itself incorrect, but is one that glues to the skin of the driver and is incredibly difficult to remove, regardless of results. The Russian has been slowly climbing the table in F2, having won 2 races. However, his general demeanour and attitude, on and off the track, leaves many question marks over this decision. His father brings significant backing to the team, but if he doesn’t clean his act the negative impact of his behaviour can be costly for Haas.
•  I am truly excited to see a completely different layout this weekend. The current calendar (2020 exceptions aside) features tracks with so many similarities, it is truly refreshing to see a short, ultra-quick layout, just to shake things up. Qualifying risks being quite the mess, and lapped cars will be a nuisance to the leaders, but I, for one, can’t wait to see them blast around Bahrain’s outer loop.

Hamilton’s 100th & Da Costa conquers Monaco! - Saturday Racing Round Up
F1
FP3 gave us a hint that qualifying would be a closely fought affair, as it proved to be, with the first runs in Q3 being crucial, and leaving Lewis just 3 thousandths ahead of Max. Race pace you would imagine, could favour Mercedes, however, with the 600m run to Turn 1, Mercedes haven’t won it yet!
It was a brilliant lap from Hamilton, as he marks his 100th pole in style. The key thing tomorrow, is that if it is close, Mercedes have a second car in the mix, whereas Perez had another disappointing day, ending up in the middle of the midfield. So tomorrow, Verstappen will need to be on his A-game, to come out on top! Bottas once again was a few tenths down, saying he lost it in Turn 10, can he play any part in the race tomorrow?
Ferrari are the masters of one lap pace it seems, at least compared to McLaren, as Leclerc grabbed 4th in the dying seconds of Q3. From there can he get into his own rhythm, and keep the McLaren’s at bay? Sainz also drove well, but given he was beating Charles a lot of this weekend, he may be slightly annoyed. Norris I am sure will not be happy with himself, as he had much better pace than 9th. On a track where overtaking is not easy, it could be hard to make up many positions.
It was a very solid drive by Ocon, to get on the third row, as the Alpine continues to get stronger, the more they understand the upgrades. With the late race pace they had in Portimao, don’t count them out of topping the midfield. Ricciardo may have finally got to grips with the car he has under him, although we know that Lando didn’t maximise his day. Can Daniel push forward in the race, or be under threat from behind?
AlphaTauri are starting to look lost this year, when we saw Tsunoda out in Q1, it was assumed to be rookie errors, and an anomaly, but then Gasly couldn’t reach Q3, so the car is just not to their liking it seems! They need to decide if this year is salvageable, or if they should concentrate on next year!
Aston Martin and Alfa Romeo are about where we expected them to be, just off the back of the mid field pack. Russell once again did a brilliant lap on a Saturday, however I fear all the good work will be undone early on in the race, if the car can’t work in dirty air! Well done also to Mick Schumacher, for outqualifying a Williams, and was only two tenths off Kimi, can he replicate last weekend’s race pace here?
Looking at the race, don’t expect much from it, although with the top teams starting on the softs, strategy choices could be interesting. Otherwise, the long run to Turn 1, will be where it is won and lost!
Formula E
It turns out you can overtake in Monaco, as Formula E had an absolute classic, with some incredible moves for the lead!
This year has not gone well for Da Costa, after storming to the title last year, but finally he got the win today, and he definitely deserved it! He managed the race really well, saving energy, and not getting flustered. Then when Mitch was ahead, he just pushed him hard, making him use up energy, and took his chance on the final lap, with an all or nothing move, which he pulled off to perfection, to earn the win in Monaco.
Frijns had a weird race, early on he seemed unbeatable, pressuring the Techeetah’s before pulling away from them. But all of a sudden, they caught him again, and he couldn’t really challenge for the win at the end. The bonus for them, is that they have pace in both race and qualifying at Virgin, which is shown by the fact he now leads the championship!
That is gutting for Evans, who fought so well for most of the race, making some brilliant moves, especially the one on Da Costa up the hill, which no one thought he could do, but in the end he used too much energy, which cost him the win! The cause of him using too much energy goes back to qualifying, where he didn’t maximise the potential of the car in Superpole, as he slid the car around the track. If he had started from pole, he could have managed the race much better, as opposed to the fighting he had to endure today! Some of the fights were with Vergne, who lost a lot of time through missing his second attack mode activation, and when you bear in mind he was ahead of Mitch before then, his race could have ended very differently! At least he got some good points, which the team has been lacking somewhat, so far this year!
Guenther needed a day like today, for both him and the team, as BMW do not want to leave the sport on a low note. He qualified and finished about where he should be, as he couldn’t quite battle those in front, yet stayed out of the chaos behind! Rowland as always was being aggressive, both in defence and attack, the car did pretty well for energy management, which must be a huge boost for the team!
Unlike his teammate, Bird couldn’t extract the pace from the car in qualifying, despite being so fast in practice. So, the race was all about minimising the deficit in the championship, which he succeeded pretty well in, as helped by crashes around him, he climbed up to 7th by the finish, still in the title hunt! Cassidy may actually be slightly disappointed with how the race ended, given where his teammate was, as well as the pace he showed in parts of the race. Nevertheless, he should come away from here happy, as he is still getting used to this style of racing!
As you would expect in Monaco, there were a fair few DNF’s, including both Mercedes, who’s weekends had already been ruined in qualifying. Can they bounce back in Mexico? Rast could have had another very solid result today, as he was in the top ten, with better energy than anyone else, as is his trademark it seems. Sadly, he was too bold when trying to make a pass though, and ruined his race!
Seeing this race makes you wonder why they ever used the shorter layout, although given how tight the energy management was, it was probably best they waited until now! Once again Formula E has given us a belter of a race, without letting any driver take charge in the championship, if anything, today has brought more drivers, like Da Costa, into contention!
