CITY OF STARS UNIVERSE Q&A
⋆ Discover more about City of Stars F1 AU Universe! ⋆ Join City of Stars' as beta reader ⋆ Ask your questions about City of Stars Universe
Tumblr media
Hi everyone! It's been two days since the beta reader form for my upcoming F1 AU Universe, City of Stars, was published, so I decided to answer here to the questions/messages you've sent me thought the form! ☺️
Before we get started, let me tell you a bit about City of Stars: ⋆ I've been working on this project in the shadows since March-April 2024, and after thinking about whether making this universe a reality once for all, I finally decided to move forward. I'm starting a new era in my life, and I think I needed a huge change when it comes to my writing as well, so I hope you like it as much as I do! ⋆ City of Stars is an Alternative Universe starring the following Formula 1 drivers: Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, Mick Schumacher, Daniel Ricciardo, Oscar Piastri, Sebastian Vettel, Carlos Sainz, Charles Leclerc, Alex Albon, Yuki Tsunoda, Esteban Ocon, George Russell, Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso (with the possibility of more of them joining). ⋆ Fanfiction announcements, including plots, drivers and titles will be made on May 14th, 2025, and they'll start being released on July 31st, 2025, the day of my 23rd birthday. When City of Stars gets released, it will be my main focus of writing and, occasionally, I'll post individual one shots/fics. ⋆ As for the beta reading process, I thought it might be nice for some of you who might be interested in reading my works (specially before anyone else does it). Important information you'll find on the beta reading form (if you wanna join): -> Tumblr username/contact information -> Drivers fanfictions you'd like to be beta reader of (you can choose as much as you want, there's no limit!) -> What version would you like to read? (Please, choose as many as wanted between Driver x Reader or Driver x OC) -> Any questions you'd like to ask me before the project (or anything related to writing)? I'd happily answer them!
💬: QUESTION ASKED | 🐝: MY ANSWER
💬: do you plan on posting more danny ric fics? 🐝: Yes, I do! As I said, this project is a way to get out of my comfort zone (which is, mostly, writing Sebastian Vettel/Oscar Piastri content most of the times), which means I'll be writing about people I didn't dare to write until now. I've been thinking about a Daniel story for quite a long time after even plotting them for some people, so it's finally the time for him to debut in my writing :)
💬: Just one will all the beta reading be done through google docs? I use that app religiously for my own writing. 🐝: Yes! I write on Google Docs and have all my writing on Google Drive, so it'll be quite easy for me to share the link with all of you beta readers :) Also, I'm planning on doing something else so we all can keep in touch (beta readers or not), but you'll see by May (I'll try my best to not to spoil it even I'm in need to).
💬: love your work, so excited for COS 🐝: Thank you so much! I'm so excited as well for you to read all of them since all plots (or, at least, the vast majority) will be interconnected to each other, so you'll see characters from almost all POVs and fanfictions :)
💬: not a question but i genuinely love your writings, they bring a smile to my face every single time :)) you are literally my fav f1 writer out there HWHEJWHSDS keep it up! 🐝: The moment I read this I starts crying, I'm not going to lie. I have nothing to say except a huge thanks and sending you virtual hugs (if you like them). I'm struggling a lot lately with my writings and, inevitably, comparing myself to other authors from here, so it's been quite a wild ride during these past weeks 🫰🏻

📍Thurgau, Switzerland 🗓️ January 19, 2023
What time are you arriving in Zurich, Lou? I need to tell Seb so he can pick you up 🥰 And don’t you dare leave me on read and come on your own, we’re the ones who invited you!
Louisa reread the messages her sister had sent a couple of hours ago and sighed, resting her forehead against the car window. She wasn’t just hoping they were close to the Vettel household. She was also praying that none of them would scold her for not telling them she had arrived in Zurich and was already on her way to Thurgau.
“We’re almost there.”
The redhead turned to the passenger seat and couldn’t help but smile.
Mick was entirely focused on the road, but she knew he was happy, really happy, that the youngest Wagner sister had decided to spend some time in Switzerland… even if it wasn’t for the best of the reasons.
“You should have come earlier, you know? Anne went back to Germany a few days ago, and if you’d come sooner, we could have spent some time together. The kids would have loved that,” he said, glancing briefly at her before turning back to the road.
“And so would my sister and Seb, trust me. They would’ve handed those little beasts over to us in a heartbeat and escaped to a luxury hotel for one of those romantic weekends they love so much,” she replied.
Mick chuckled before asking:
“Speaking of Seb and Di, did you tell them you’ve arrived? That I picked you up?”
Louisa didn’t answer. Instead, the soft sound of the radio, now playing a Dua Lipa song, filled the silence in her place.
“Lou…”
“I didn’t want to bother them,” she finally said. “You know they’ve been having a tough time with the whole documentary filming. I don’t want to make things more complicated…”
It was true. And, at the same time, it wasn’t.
“I came here to help them, not to be another burden.”
“You know none of them would see picking you up as a burden.”
And he was right. But her stubbornness, the exhaustion from two flights and a four-hour layover, and the fact that Mick had just pulled up to the villa where her sister, brother-in-law, and nieces and nephew lived, stopped her from answerinf.
“I’ll come by in a few days to check in on you and keep you company,” Mick declared as he quickly got out of the car to grab her suitcase from the trunk. Louisa followed suit.
“You don’t have to do that,” she said.
“I know. But I want to. You’re my friend, Lou, and that’s what friends do, right?”
Once again, she had no words.
Schumacher didn’t say anything else. Instead, he pulled her into a quick hug before getting back in the car, starting the engine, and driving off, leaving her completely alone.
She walked toward the entrance, noticing the door was slightly ajar. In the distance, she saw the family dogs, Clifford and Bruno, playing together. The moment they realized the visitor had arrived, they started barking excitedly, running up to her in an attempt to jump on her and greet her properly.
“Aunt Lou!”
Emily’s excited shriek made Louisa jump. The girl had just burst out of the house, sprinting towards her. Lou barely had time to react before her eldest niece crashed into her, wrapping her arms tightly around her waist.
“You’re finally here! I’ve missed you so much!”
There was no denying it: Emily was the spitting image of Seb. She had his whole face, his blonde, curly hair, and his striking blue eyes. She hadn’t inherited anything from Diana, unlike Matilda and Enzo, who were a mix of both parents—or, in Enzo’s case, the perfect replica of his mother.
“See? I told you I’d come,” Louisa said with a laugh, ruffling the girl’s already messy hair.
“Yeah, but it took you forever to get here!”
“Emily, it’s only been two weeks since I told your mom I was coming.”
“Aunt Lou! Aunt Lou!”
Matilda now appeared at the door, bouncing excitedly. Even though it was early afternoon, she was still in her blue Spider-Man pajamas. Lou had no doubt Seb was to blame for letting her stay in them all day.
The moment Matilda reached her, Lou crouched down, and the little girl wasted no time wrapping her arms around her aunt’s neck so she could pick her up.
“So mommy and daddy weren’t lying after all! You really came!”
“Of course I did,” the twenty-something murmured, pressing a kiss to her niece’s forehead while pulling Emily closer with her free arm so she wouldn’t feel left out. “Have you been taking care of everyone like you promised me after Christmas?”
Matilda nodded, though not very convincingly.
“Yes! But Enzo is still a tiny baby, so I let mommy and daddy take care of him!”
Louisa chuckled at her niece’s logic, but before she could answer, or even step inside the house, another voice interrupted their little reunion.
“Alright, girls, let’s give your aunt some space to breathe. She just got here, and she’s already going to get tired of you.”
Seb stood there, Enzo in his arms, resting against his hip. He looked at her with that familiar warmth he always carried. The moment their eyes met, Louisa finally felt at home, for the first time in a long time. Maybe even longer than she was willing to admit.
“Welcome home, Lou.”
He took a step forward, freeing one arm so he could pull her into a hug.
“Why didn’t you tell us you’d arrived?” Vettel asked, concerned about lacing his voice. “Did something happen?”
“No, no, nothing like that,” Lou quickly assured him. “I just didn’t want to bother you, so I asked Mick to pick me up. We went to have lunch and catch up a bit. You know, with all of him going now to Williams… and dating your sister…”
“Come on in, it’s cold outside,” Sebastian finally said after a few seconds that felt like an eternity. He took the girl’s suitcase and ushered his daughters inside, followed by their aunt. “Make yourself at home, Lou, and get some rest, you need it.”
“Louisa! How could you not call me to let me know you’d arrived?!”
Diana’s voice rang out from what seemed like quite a distance, but within seconds, she appeared in the doorway, walking briskly while wiping her hands on the apron she was wearing.
She quickly gestured for her husband to close the door, which he obeyed immediately, and then signaled to her daughters to settle down.
“For God’s sake, girls! What have I told you about going outside without a coat? You’re going to catch a cold!”
Sebastian handed Enzo to Lou, chuckling quietly, just as she did, and picked up the suitcase to carry it to her room. Diana grabbed Lou’s wrist, pulling her inside once and for all, then motioned for her to follow.
“You got here just in time,” Diana said as they entered the kitchen. “I made apple strudel. And cookies with all sorts of fillings, and cake, and even a pie…”
“You just wanted me to visit so you could give me new recipes for The Sunshine, didn’t you?” Lou teased, watching her sister pull a tray of pain au chocolat out of the oven, just like the ones she was used to making at the café in their hometown, Linz.
“Well… maybe you caught me,” Diana smirked.
Sebastian entered the kitchen, still holding the little one in his arms, and positioned himself next to his wife, trying to sneak a bite of something she had made, though not before stealing a kiss from her lips.
“Take advantage of it, Lou. She only bakes when she’s happy.”
“And when she’s stressed,” Lou pointed out. “Remember, she started The Sunshine after Ferrari fired.”
“I am not stressed,” Diana protested. “And they didn’t fired me: I resigned after they posted on social media I was parting ways with them by the end of the season before we even agreed on that.”
Sebastian glanced at Lou out of the corner of his eye, mouthing liar, which made both of them burst into laughter, soon joined by Enzo, who waved his chubby little arms excitedly.
“So, tell me, how was the trip?” Diana asked, turning to her sister while playfully smacking her husband’s arm with a dish towel. “Mick went to pick you up, right?”
“It was long, but there were no disasters, so let’s be thankful for that.”
Diana then approached her sister, placed a hand on her shoulder, and made her sit on one of the kitchen island stools.
“Come on, sit down. You need to eat something.”
She placed a plate in front of her with a slice of apple strudel and a couple of the cinnamon rolls she knew Lou loved.
The moment Lou took a bite of the apple strudel, she felt completely at home, enveloped in the warmth of one of her greatest comfort zones. It also brought back fond memories of her childhood with her sister and Sebastian, first as her best friend, and later, as her sister’s boyfriend.
“Well then…” Diana said, now holding Enzo while Sebastian tidied up the kitchen to make space for the sisters. “It’s time to catch up.”
“Where do we start?”
“Iryna. How is she?”
“Busy as always, you know how she is,” Lou replied, swinging her feet under the chair. “She’s a little overwhelmed with the book she’s currently writing. It’s a project she’s had in mind for a long time, but since it’s a bit different from what she’s used to writing, you can imagine… She thinks people are going to hate it.”
“She always says that, and then it turns out to be a huge success,” Sebastian chimed in, taking a seat beside his wife.
“Yeah, but you know how she is. She overthinks everything, even before anyone has read a single word of what she’s written.”
Diana nodded, completely understanding. She had never imagined that the Italian girl who had once walked into her café looking for a job would one day become part of their family.
“Does Max know what it’s about?”
“What do you think?” Lou asked. The couple shook their heads, and she nodded. “He says it annoys him when she writes and that he doesn’t deserve to get spoilers.”
“They’re like an old married couple with 60 years of marriage under their belt,” Sebastian joked.
“Speaking of couples who act like they’ve been together forever… Thoughts on Ame and Carlos?”
Diana and Louisa exchanged a look before bursting into laughter.
If someone had told them less than a year ago that they wouldn’t just rekindle their relationship with their sister but that she would start fake-dating someone out of revenge—only to end up falling in love with Carlos Sainz—they wouldn’t have believed it.
“Ame hasn’t stopped talking about it since Carlos took her out to dinner to make things official,” Diana said, rolling her eyes. “I thought she was anti-romance, but it turns out the toughest of us is the complete opposite.”
“Do you remember when you and Seb started dating, and she wouldn’t stop teasing you because you were so cheesy?” Lou nearly shouted between laughs.
“Don’t remind me,” Sebastian groaned. “I still remember when Johanna invited me to dinner for the first time as Diana’s boyfriend. I held her hand, and Ame said we were disgusting. Not to be mean, but…”
“And now they’re the disgusting ones,” Lou continued, sighing dramatically. “Amelie won’t shut up about how perfect Carlos is, how attentive he is, how much he wants a dog…”
“A dog?” Sebastian raised an eyebrow.
Lou shrugged and began playing with her nephew, alternating her gaze between them.
“Apparently, he’s been trying to convince her. He says it’ll help them prepare for when they have kids.”
“Oh my God… They’ve been dating for less than a month, and they’re already thinking about having kids. They’re a disaster…”
The conversation went on for hours, covering everything from how their uncles were doing and how they planned to handle this new year without an F1 season to worry about, to the preparation for the documentary they would start filming in just a week, and how Lou was managing The Sunshine on her own now that Iryna was no longer working there since moving to Monaco.
By the time the night had fully settled over Thurgau, the kids were exhausted and fast asleep in their rooms, finally granting the adults some peace. The only sound from them was Enzo’s steady breathing, coming through the baby monitor resting on the armrest of the sofa where Diana was sitting.
Lou was lying on one of the armchairs next to the couch, having decided to give the couple some space as they cuddled together. Diana sighed, resting her head more firmly against Seb’s chest, trying not to overthink everything that was coming their way. Most of all, she was struggling with how to approach the conversation she had been avoiding with her younger sister, especially given how stubborn, independent, and emotionally closed-off Louisa could be.
A comfortable silence had settled between them, making words unnecessary. But that didn’t mean Diana could ignore the need to talk to her sister.
“So, Lou…” she said at last, sitting up on the couch. She crossed her legs and took Seb’s hand for support. “How are you? I mean… how you really are?”
Louisa didn’t answer right away. She knew she couldn’t avoid this question forever, just like she couldn’t avoid the conversation that was about to unfold. A tightness formed in her chest, one she hadn’t felt in a long time because she hadn’t allowed herself the luxury of feeling bad.
“I… don’t know,” she admitted honestly, exhaling sharply.
“What do you mean by that?” Seb asked gently, his voice calm and reassuring.
“I mean that I should know how I feel, but I don’t,” she let out a sarcastic laugh. “I’ve spent so much time pretending I’m fine that I don’t even know if I actually am or if I’m not. I don’t have an answer, to be honest.” She looked down, feeling slightly ashamed. “Most days, I just… act like everything’s normal.”
Di exchanged a quick glance with Seb before getting up. She walked over to where her sister was sitting and perched on the armrest of the chair, wrapping an arm around her shoulders.
“It’s completely normal to feel that way, Lou. You don’t have to be ashamed of it, or have everything figured out when you’re feeling so… lost.”
Lou swallowed hard, trying to hold back her tears.
Trying, above all, not to seem weak.
She had always been the pure light of their family. The funny, adorable little girl who could brighten even the worst of days with her infectious smile.
She couldn’t be the opposite now.
“I feel like I should know what’s wrong with me. The rest of you have… I don’t know, lives that are sorted out. And I…” She forced herself to stop and take a deep breath. She wouldn’t cry. She wouldn’t allow herself to. “Ame has Carlos, and just look at them! And Iryna—not only does she have an amazing boyfriend, but her career is going great too. And you and Seb… you’ve always been my example of what I want in the future.” She smiled sadly at them. Diana felt her chest tighten, guilt washing over her in a way she hadn’t felt in a long time—possibly not since their father’s death. “I just feel like a useless person who’s merely existing and not doing anything.”
“Lou, sweetheart, that’s not true,” Seb said, trying to reassure her.
“Well, it sure feels like it,” her voice wavered slightly, but she tried to ignore it. “What have I even done in the past year? Work at the café? Post TikToks and YouTube videos about books?”
Diana opened her mouth to respond, but Lou stopped her before she could.
“Don’t get me wrong, Didi. I love working at the café. It’s my dream job. But it still feels like I’m just filling time doing things to keep busy because, deep down, I don’t know what to do with my life.”
Di squeezed her hand tightly.
“I’ll say it again: you don’t have to have all the answers right now. You don’t have to fix everything immediately.”
“Then when?” Lou shook her head, struggling to contain her frustration. “I’m twenty-one years old and the only future plans I have are calling Aunt Johanna to check on the café’s online orders and deciding what to post next on social media. Is that a future?”
Sebastian sighed. Louisa’s words reminded him too much of the conversations he’d had with Di over the past fifteen years.
One thing was certain: besides being stubborn, ambitious, and determined to take on the world, the Wagner sisters were incredibly insecure.
“Lou, you’ve been through a lot,” the German said. “You lost your mother when you were just a baby. Then you moved to Spain, only for your dad to get diagnosed with cancer, and Di had to take care of you while dealing with that. And then he… passed away. Coping with all of that, and everything that came afterward, it’s a lot. It’s not easy, really.”
Di lowered her head, trying to hide her tears, but both of them knew how she was feeling.
“And now… you’ve seen people you trusted with your life walk away.”
“You mean Vivian. You can say her name, Seb, it’s fine.”
“Of course, we mean her, Lou,” Diana chimed in. “And we’re not avoiding the topic. What matters is whether you are ready to talk about it.”
“I just don’t know what I did wrong for her to leave like that… like I was nothing to her. We have been inseparable since we were twelve. And then, one day, I text her, and surprise! She reads the message and never replies.”
“Some people leave for no reason at all, without any explanation,” Seb exhaled, rubbing his jaw. “And that doesn’t mean it’s your fault.”
Lou let out a bitter, sarcastic laugh.
She had spent months trying to convince herself of that, but it had only made her feel worse. It had made her overthink everything, questioning if she was actually a good person, or if she wasn’t at all.
“Yeah, sure. But at least if she had told me what I did wrong, I could have gotten some closure, moved on, and kept living my life like nothing happened.”
“The thing is, Lou… sometimes, we don’t get closure. Sometimes, someone is here one day and gone the next.”
“Yeah, well… it still sucks.”
Lou sank deeper into the chair, crossing her arms and staring at the wall in front of her, filled with photographs. She spotted one of her father, smiling, just months before he died.
She tried to convince herself that not being able to say goodbye to him, that not having the proper farewell was far worse than the unexpected loss of her former best friend.
And yet, the tightness in her chest remained.
“I think it would help you to focus on the things that genuinely make you happy,” Diana said softly.
“Like what?” Lou asked, sitting up and looking directly at her sister, who was now standing.
“Well… your YouTube channel. You could start there. Or your TikTok videos.”
“Didi, those are just hobbies.”
“But do they make you happy?” her brother-in-law asked. Lou nodded, and the German continued. “Then focus on that. You love to talk about everything. Why not take it seriously and give yourself permission to be a… that thing I can't remember the name…”
"Content creator," the sisters said in unison. “Influencer.”
"Exactly. So what’s stopping you from doing it?"
The girl swallowed hard and looked down again, nervously fidgeting with her hands.
"I suppose… the fear of letting people down. That exposing myself too much to the public might turn me into someone I’m not, like creating a mask for myself."
Diana let out a soft laugh and pulled her into a warm embrace, pressing gentle kisses to her head.
"You won’t expose yourself too much because you don’t like to—I know you," she reassured her. "And I’m also absolutely convinced that you couldn’t present yourself as anyone other than who you truly are, even if you tried. People love you, Lou, and it’s time you realize that once and for all."
"I don’t know… I still feel like it doesn’t make sense."
"My life didn’t make sense either when I first started karting as a kid, and look at me now," Seb chimed in with a chuckle.
"Yeah, but you’re good. That’s why you’re a four-time Formula 1 world champion."
"And you’re good at what you do too," Diana countered, trying to lift her sister’s spirits as she seemed to sink further into self-doubt. "The problem is, you just don’t believe it yet."
"I don’t know if I ever will. I don’t even know if you’re telling me the truth or if you’re just saying this because I’m family and you want to make me feel better. But if that’s the case—"
She didn’t finish her sentence. She stopped herself the moment she saw the disappointment on her sister’s face and the concern on her brother-in-law’s. That thought, the one that had been festering in her mind, had completely taken over. Without another word, Louisa abruptly stood up from the couch and headed to what would soon be her bedroom.
Neither Sebastian nor Diana dared to speak, not even when they heard a loud door slam upstairs, strong enough to wake the kids.
Diana, who had instinctively stood up to follow her sister but ultimately froze at the entrance of the living room, let out a sigh. She hesitated for a moment before returning to the couch and sitting down beside Seb.
She exhaled slowly, trying her best to calm down and, above all, not to feel guilty about what had just happened. Her only intention had been to make her sister feel better.
But she knew it had turned out to be the opposite, and that was the last thing she had wanted.
Then, in the middle of all the thoughts swirling through her mind, an idea struck her.
"You’ve got that look again, love."
Seb, who had his arm around her waist, straightened up slightly to look at her.
"What look?"
"The look that says you’re about to do something crazy."
She smiled. He knew her too well.
"Should I be worried?"
"No, no, not at all. I was just thinking about how much Lou needs a push."
Sebastian tilted his head, confused by her words. Diana stood up from the couch and walked over to the entrance hall, where she had left her phone. Then, she returned to her husband, completely focused on whatever she was typing.
That alone was suspicious enough.
"What do you mean by a push?"
"She’s stuck, Seb. She has been for years, you know it as well as I do," she said, lowering her phone to look at him. He still didn’t seem to understand where she was going with this. "It’s like she’s been in survival mode ever since my dad died. And yes, she had a much better childhood than Amelie and I did, or at least that’s what I tried to give her. But because of that, she never really let herself live like a normal person."
Seb nodded, watching as Diana paced back and forth, clearly deep in thought.
"And you think you can fix that?"
"I can’t ‘fix’ it, but I can help. She needs something—or someone—to help pull her out of that cycle of negativity she’s trapped in."
"Let me guess: you already have someone in mind."
She didn’t say a word, but the way her lips curled into a knowing smile while she typed was enough of an answer for Sebastian.
"Diana…"
"What?" she asked innocently, walking back toward him and settling onto his lap. "Sunshine, I know exactly the person who could help her with this… someone who could push her out of her comfort zone…"
"You can’t just throw someone at her like that, assuming it’ll fix everything," the German countered, trying to reason with his wife.
"I’m not throwing anyone at her!" she defended. "I just think it could do her some good to meet someone new… someone with a different perspective, yet similar struggles. Someone who’s in a position like hers but maybe sees things differently."
"And who exactly is this person…?" Seb asked cautiously.
Diana shifted slightly, now straddling her husband, wrapping her arms around his neck, her smile widening.
"Oscar."
"Oscar… as in Oscar Piastri?"
She nodded before pressing a kiss to his lips.
If it weren’t for the fact that he was absolutely and utterly in love with her, Sebastian might have lost his patience.
"Think about it, love," she continued, regaining her composure but keeping her hands on him, now tracing slow, teasing patterns along the waistband of his pants, occasionally tickling his arms. "Oscar is young and just starting his career, but he’s been under immense pressure for years. He knows what it’s like to have expectations placed on him, to have people talk about him even when they don’t know him. He’s also lost people, and despite everything, he seems to handle it all relatively well."
"That’s true… If I remember correctly, Lily left him out of nowhere right after he was announced as a McLaren driver."
"And without any explanation, just like Vivian did to Lou," Diana added.
Seb sighed, processing the idea.
"Well… I have to admit, this isn’t the worst idea you’ve ever had," he finally said.
“I'll take that as a victory.”
“And how exactly do you plan to make all of this possible?”
Diana picked up her phone, opened WhatsApp, and went straight to Oscar's contact, which she didn't hesitate to open. To her surprise, he had already replied.
Hypothetically speaking... what do you think about meeting someone who has no idea they need to meet you? the woman asked.
What do you mean, meeting someone who has no idea they need to meet me? Is this a riddle? was the response from the Australian. Or is this something a sponsor told you?
Diana showed the message to her husband, who raised an eyebrow.
“He wants an explanation. And I’m sure you’re also making the poor guy nervous.”
The woman nodded, and that was exactly what she did.
It's simple, really. Lou, my younger sister, is going through a... let’s say, somewhat complicated situation, and I think she needs to meet someone new! I don’t want to tell her who you are, so she doesn’t feel pressured or judged… what do you think?
“Do you think this is going to work?” Sebastian asked with a hard-to-read expression.
“I honestly don’t know, she admitted after sending the message to the guy. But I do know it’s a great opportunity for her to realize we don’t see her as a victim or some charity case, you know?”
“I hope, for both your sakes, that this works out…” Seb murmured as he kissed his wife on the forehead, now sitting next to him, hugging her knees.
“Yeah... me too…”
Diana’s phone, still by her side, vibrated once again.
She quickly unlocked it and went straight to Piastri’s contact. Seb leaned in, curious to see what the guy had replied.
Perfect, no prob! Just let me know what you need from me, but if I could give you an idea... how about I create an anonymous email to start? :)

WAY BACK HOME SERIES
BOOK IV in WHERE WE ARE SAGA Available on Wattpad on March 23rd ⋆ Masterlist here
PAIRING: Carlos Sainz x Amelie Wagner (original character) TROPES: Enemies to lovers, fake dating, forced proximity TIMELINE: Formula 1 2022 season
Tumblr media
To everyone's eyes, Amelie Wagner's life seemed perfect. To her, however, it was quite the opposite.
Although her relationship with her family had not been the best since some of her life's canon events, including her father's death and her older sister's quite messy and controversial public life, things took a turn for the worse when she met Daniel during her university years. What began as just stopping by her aunt and uncle's house to spend the night gradually turned into sporadic visits, eventually ending up with her immediately moving in with her boyfriend after finishing university. This led to a growing distance between her, her sisters, and her aunt and uncle. Despite pleas and attempts to keep the family together from her sisters and the ones who were like her parents, their communication was limited to occasional birthday greetings, important holiday calls and, years later, the surprising announcement of a wedding that caught both the Müller-Wagner and the Vettel households off guard.
After spending a year and a half planning what she believed would be the best day of her life with the man she thought she would spend the rest of her life with, Amelie realizes she's not ready at all to say "I do," leading her to run away from her own wedding and leaving all the guests in shock.
Desperate, confused, and unsure whether she had made the right decision or what to do with her life from that moment on, the middle Wagner sister was determined to leave everything behind to regain what she had lost with the help of her family and, particularly, Carlos Sainz, the Spanish Scuderia Ferrari driver with whom she must fake a relationship after drunkenly telling her ex-fiancé that he wasn't the only one who found someone better.

Mr. Steal Your Girl, then make her cry You said I'm the love of you life loml, Taylor Swift
🗓️ February 10th, 2010  Jerez, Spain
Diana hadn't received any calls from Mark since the day they had their last conversation. In fact, she hadn't expected him to call her at all, but she couldn't help the feeling of disappointment constantly in her mind.
The only thing she got from her boyfriend was an endless number of missed calls, followed by the sound of his voicemail with his pre-recorded voice telling her to leave a message and that he would call her back later. She ended up doing just that, even though she knew she wouldn't get a response from him.
Instead, it was Seb whom she spoke to daily.
The German hadn't said anything else at that fateful dinner, which should have been a kind of refuge for both of them; nor did he mention anything during the rest of his stay in Linz or once he was back in Heppenheim. Despite agreeing not to see each other again until they had to fly to Spain for the presentation of that year's Red Bull car, the RB6, Sebastian never stopped worrying about her. He called her every day; he was the first to know her grades for the penultimate semester of university, and the person with whom she sometimes even fell asleep on the phone. They stayed up talking until the early hours of the morning, despite promising to go to bed early, only to curse themselves the next morning for breaking their promises, knowing fully well they would do it again.
Diana struggled, with little success, to get a call, a message, or even a breakup explanation from Mark, anything that would clarify why he didn't want to continue their strange relationship. She did everything she could to let him know that the team had contacted her about traveling to Southern Europe in February because it was required, but it was impossible.
The blue-eyed man who made her days easier, given that her father's health was deteriorating by the minute and she was already grieving before the inevitable happened, not only showed interest and happiness that Red Bull Racing's intern would be at the event, but also offered to travel to Austria and stay with her for two or three days before the flight. Seb knew Diana was terribly afraid of flying and didn't want her to go through it alone.
Diana didn't see Mark or anyone from the team, except for the already obvious Sebastian and his PR manager, Britta Roeske, during the two days leading up to the big event. That Wednesday, however, a wave of anxiety washed over her as she got ready in her hotel room and, especially, as she made her way to the circuit with her best friend. The thought of having to face Mark head-on began to creep in.
It was barely ten in the morning, and the air was already filled with the persistent smell of burnt rubber, oil, and fuel, not to mention the noise from photographers, journalists, team members, and the occasional fan roaming the area.
The RB6 had just been unveiled, and now everyone was behind the cameras, hiding in the garages after dealing with the media. All that was left was to wait for the mechanics to finish the last adjustments before the first day of preseason testing began, where both Webber and Vettel would take part.
The latter stood beside Diana, tucked away in a corner of the garage. His arms were crossed, and his eyes constantly shifted not out of nervousness, but out of an attempt to monitor everything. He knew she would run into his teammate at any moment, and more than wanting to prevent an altercation, he didn't want the Australian to make a scene big enough for others to notice.
But, more than anything, he didn't want this to be another burden added to Wagner's already complicated life.
Diana, on the other hand, was nervous. The only thing she could do was fidget with her hands, her hair, or the jacket she was wearing. Her gaze darted from side to side, and every time a door opened or someone entered, her body tensed only to relax when she saw it wasn't the person she feared most in that moment.
It hadn't even been a month since her last conversation with Mark, but it had been long enough for her to stop thinking about it, or at least to stop giving it importance. But she couldn't. She still struggled to understand, and what hurt the most was that he only called to demand explanations about her life and judge her, even though he knew how important Seb was to her.
He never called to apologize for forgetting about her for weeks, despite her insistence on maintaining contact.
Diana had given up, but that didn't mean she felt any better. The only thing that consoled her was knowing she had been there for Sebastian when he needed a friend the most. But what made her question whether it had all been worth it was the fact that Mark had already made up his mind about her, and nothing she said would change it.
When she turned to look at the boy beside her and he met her gaze with a sparkle in his eyes—a look she had never seen from her boyfriend when he looked at her—she knew she would endure a thousand more arguments with Mark just to see Sebastian happy.
Finally, Mark appeared, his overall half unzipped. He started talking to some of the team members, who seemed more than happy to see him after so many months.
As he began cheerfully greeting each and every one of them, acting like the perfect prince charming, Sebastian rolled his eyes. It was impossible for him to see his teammate the same way ever since he had heard him yelling at Diana over the phone—especially the way he manipulated her, making it seem like she didn't even realize it.
"Di, you don't have to talk to him now," the young man murmured, stepping closer to her.
Di felt a shiver run down her spine, but she tried to control herself. She saw Webber getting closer and closer to where they were standing, and by instinct, she pressed herself against Seb, so much so that she nearly knocked him over. He caught her in his arms to keep her from falling.
"Sorry..." was all she could manage to say, unaware of what he had just told her.
"Talk to him when you feel strong enough to do so," Vettel continued, speaking with the same calm tone. "Take a deep breath and think carefully about what you want to say, and then..."
"No, Seb, I need to talk to Mark as soon as possible..."
"Diana..."
"If he's going to start acting the way he did when he called me or throwing passive-aggressive comments through hints, I'd rather have him saying those things to my face," Diana declared. Then, she sighed, forcing herself to relax before heading toward her boyfriend. "I'm sorry..."
Sebastian sighed as well, and despite knowing that Webber was watching them, he pulled Diana into a hug. Then, looking sideways at the Australian with clear displeasure, he cupped Diana's face in his hands.
And if only he could not just kiss her but also make her see that she deserved so much more than the kind of love Webber had convinced her she was worthy of.
"Be careful, okay? Mark... he knows how to hurt you."
Diana nodded timidly before pressing a kiss to his cheek, promising that everything would be fine, even though she had no idea what would happen or how things between them would end.
Without saying much more, she started crossing the garage, trying to follow Mark's steps. After witnessing the way those who claimed to be just best friends had been behaving, he had decided to leave, holding back the urge to make a scene that would land him and his girlfriend on the front pages of every tabloid covering the most exclusive Formula 1 gossip... if that's what he even wanted, of course.
"Can we talk?"
The girl quickened her pace slightly and gently tugged on Mark's fireproofs. He finally turned around, coming face to face with a somewhat furious and perhaps even disappointed Diana. He knew she was scared, no matter how firm her voice sounded—at least, that's what her body language was screaming at him.
"Oh, now you want to talk?" Webber laughed sarcastically.
"Don't start, please..." She warned, raising her voice a little more than she should have. "I just want to clear things up since, given that you didn't give me the chance to do so over the phone, maybe now that I have you in front of me, you will."
"Let me remind you that it was you who hung up the call after, I don't know... maybe because it was killing you to keep hiding things from me?"
Diana wanted to argue, but she knew it wasn't worth it. Instead, she chose to stay quiet, though she did roll her eyes just enough not only to let him know how impossible he was, but also to irritate him.
He was making her torment herself, letting the guilt eat away at her until she admitted the truth from his point of view... And deep down, that's exactly what he wanted.
"Fine. Go ahead," the Australian finally relented.
The blonde took a deep breath and, trying to keep her composure, began to speak:
"You accused me of things that aren't true, Mark, and you know it. Seb was only in Linz because he needed a break, you know? To clear his head, disconnect from everything... He and Hanna had just broken up, and I offered him a place to stay for a few days... for his sake, not mine. He needed support, and that's exactly what friends are for."
"And out of all the people who could possibly be his friends, he had to choose you?" he replied, tilting his head at what his girlfriend had just revealed to him. "A bit strange, don't you think?"
"It's not what you're thinking, Mark."
"Yeah, I know. But it still feels weird, and forgive me if I find it hard to believe that you just happen to always be there whenever Seb needs someone. It's like... like you enjoy being needed by him."
Diana clenched her fists instinctively. She was finding it harder and harder to hold back.
"I was just being a friend, you know? Unlike you, who couldn't even be bothered to pick up the damn phone once or send me a message since the season ended."
"So now it's my fault?" The Australian pointed at himself, unable to suppress a smirk.
"I just want you to know that I haven't done anything wrong."
"Yeah, yeah, whatever you say. You know what your problem is, Diana?" He stepped closer to her, making her take a few steps back—steps that were useless when he grabbed her wrists, holding them tighter than she would have liked. Even when she resisted and tried to break free, Webber didn't let go. "You always think you can fix everything, that you can save everyone from whatever suffering they're going through. But I don't blame you. Maybe that's just your way of coping, of making yourself feel better after your mother killed herself."
Those words hit her like a punch to the stomach.
She was speechless. Breathing became harder with every second, and even seeing clearly was a struggle, especially with the amount of tears welling up in her eyes. Everything around her seemed to disappear—only the man in front of her and his last words existed.
Maybe that's just your way of coping, of making yourself feel better after your mother killed herself.
She had spent years convincing herself that her mother had been mentally ill, that she wasn't to blame for not being able to save her, for not getting home earlier that day and finding her lifeless on the bed. She had always told herself that she was just another victim of that suicide.
"Mark, I... I didn't..." She couldn't speak. The tears and the tight knot in her chest wouldn't let her. "I'm not dating Sebastian... I'm only in love with you..."
She knew the words were leaving her lips automatically, but she wasn't sure if she was trying to convince Mark or herself.
All he did was shake his head, trying not to laugh at how pathetic and ridiculous Diana looked in that moment.
"If that's what helps you sleep at night, keep lying to me. But if it's really true that you're not cheating on me with Vettel, I guess I'll have to see it with my own eyes."
"Hey, Webber, stop messing with your girl and get over here already! Didn't you say you were in a hurry to talk to us about something supposedly super important?"
The couple turned to face Christian Horner, who was standing at the door of one of the rooms that had been used as an office all day. Through the window, Diana could see Helmut Marko engrossed in some papers while marking something on his phone.
"Yeah, of course, I'm coming!"
Wagner felt a strange sense of relief when Mark turned his back on her and walked toward that room without another word... Not even a goodbye. She wanted to argue, to keep insisting that there was nothing going on with Seb, but she knew that trying to change Mark's mind was pointless.
All she could do was stay where she was, staring at the door Webber had just walked through. She tried to look through the window, curious about this sudden meeting she hadn't heard anything about, but she gave up when her boyfriend appeared at the window. After shooting her a rather curious smile, he pulled the blinds shut.
"Shit..."
A knot formed in her stomach as she turned around and started wandering aimlessly.
"You're scrunching up your nose. A lot, I'd say."
A familiar voice—too familiar—spoke in front of her.
She realized that if it hadn't been for the German, she would have crashed straight into him.
Why did Seb always appear whenever she seemed to need him the most?
Maybe it's because he knows how bad of a girlfriend you are and has been paying attention to the conversation.
No, that was impossible. He had probably just been waiting in the garage until he got the order to do some test laps on the circuit.
"You know I always scrunch my nose when I'm angry." Seb raised an eyebrow, and she rolled her eyes. "He was saying bad things about you, Seb."
"Bad things about me, or was he saying bad things about you and blaming you for doing things with me that, by the way, we haven't done?"
Diana hesitated. She didn't know what to say, not when she knew that, once again, he was right.
Mark knew exactly how to get into her head and manipulate her to the point of making her doubt herself, while Sebastian seemed to have become her reason when she was on the verge of losing her mind completely.
"I feel like he thinks I have too many emotions, you know?" she said. She was being honest, yes, but she avoided the question and, more importantly, that particular topic of conversation because she didn't want to talk about it. Instead, she felt the need to vent about what she believed her boyfriend thought of her. "That I have a savior complex..."
"Because you couldn't save your mother," Vettel finished for her. Diana cursed herself for letting her friend overhear that. "For God's sake, Di, that's bullshit. I mean, not about your mother," he quickly corrected himself, stumbling over his words in the process, "but what he said. You just want to help others the way, maybe, you'd like to be helped yourself."
"But you do help me... And my dad, my aunt, my uncle... and, well, my sisters," she cut in. "But anyway! The point is that you should try to make him understand that everything he says is complete nonsense."
"To be honest, I would if it made any difference," he said. "But since I know he's just going to keep being stubborn, I'd rather not waste my time with him. I'd rather spend it with you."
She gave him a tired smile, but Seb knew she was doing her best to put on a brave face, just like she always did when things weren't going well. In that moment, the instinct to protect her from everything that could hurt her ignited in his chest.
That was how he had felt for the past few months, but he had done his best to hide it, to ignore it... yet all that did was make the feeling grow stronger and stronger.
And that was exactly what scared him the most about himself.
"Come on, let's go," was all he could say as, unlike Mark, he took her hand as if she were made of porcelain, delicate and fragile.
"Where to? The practice sessions are about to—"
"Fuck the practice sessions," he interrupted before she could say anything else.
His fingers intertwined with hers, and even though he didn't know exactly where to go or what to do, he was sure of one thing: he just wanted to get her out of there, far away from where Mark had once again treated her so badly.
As they crossed the paddock, catching the attention of a few journalists, they ran into Britta Roeske, Sebastian's PR manager and, on many occasions, his savior. Or, depending on how you looked at it, a second mother.
The woman, perfectly dressed in her Red Bull uniform, wasn't surprised to see them together, but she was surprised to see them that together. She couldn't help but glance at their still intertwined hands before looking back at them, incredulous.
"Don't you dare be late. Thirty minutes, Sebastian," was all she said.
"Seems like you don't trust me," Sebastian responded, flashing an innocent smile that, rather than a trick, seemed completely genuine.
"With her?" Roeske pointed at Wagner, who simply shrugged and curved her lips slightly. "Not much, to be honest. Be careful and don't do anything you'll regret later."
Neither of them replied to that, but they both knew exactly what she meant.
They continued walking in a comfortable silence around the circuit, getting farther and farther away from the paddock. They did what Seb called a "practice track walk" until they reached a grandstand area. Once seated, they had a perfect view of the entire track.
"Thank you for everything," Di murmured, pulling her knees to her chest and wrapping her arms around them. Seb, on his part, draped an arm around her shoulders, and when he noticed she was cold, he took off his jacket and placed it over her.
"You don't have to thank me. I hate seeing you like this. Out of all the people in the world who don't deserve to feel this way, you're the one who deserves it the least."
Neither of them said anything else. Diana simply smiled and, for the first time all day, without fear, leaned against Seb's chest. He didn't hesitate to hold her, place a soft kiss on her forehead, and start playing with her hair, something he was so used to doing.
"I don't understand why he's talking to Helmut and Horner," Di broke the silence, sitting up to look at Seb. "I mean... what could possibly be so important that he needs to have a meeting with them today?"
"Yeah, I was wondering the same thing," Seb frowned. "If I'm being honest, I don't like it one bit..."
"Do you think it's about me? That... they're talking about me?"
Sebastian bit his lip at his friend's question. He wanted to be honest with her, but at the same time, he didn't want her to worry even more and start overthinking something that might be completely trivial.
"I don't want to assume, but... Webber is the kind of guy who likes to control everything and, with that, do whatever it takes to keep being the center of attention," he said, letting his opinion slip while carefully avoiding saying that she was a prime example of something he wanted to protect. "If he has even the slightest suspicion that, like last season, he's going to be the second driver..." Seb hesitated and, before speaking again, tried to find the right words. "I don't know, Di. Maybe he just wants to spin the story to fit his own narrative of whatever paranoid ideas he's come up with."
Seb couldn't lie to Di. After all, she didn't deserve that.
She swallowed hard.
"Do you think he's trying to turn them against me?"
"Honestly? I don't know. But what I do know is that whatever he's saying isn't going to change the fact that you belong on this team, that you belong..."
With me, the German thought without an ounce of regret, but with too much fear to say it out loud.
"You're smart, Di," he continued. "This is your second year with the team; your third with me. You know us, and more importantly, you know me better than anyone. And on top of that, you work harder than anyone else—Rocky's words, too, by the way—while also getting your degree and taking care of your dad and your sisters."
"It's just what I have to do..."
"If they don't realize that you're the best thing they could ever have, that's their problem, not mine."
Diana lowered her gaze, unable to stop herself from blushing.
"Why do you always know exactly what to say to brighten someone's day?"
"I'm not trying to brighten anyone's day, Di. I'm just telling the truth about how incredible you are."
For the first time, she gathered enough courage to look at him again without feeling embarrassed. It felt... strange. She wasn't sure what exactly, but she was convinced that the way he spoke to her, the things he said, the way he looked at her...
It was as if he truly saw her as something more than just a friend.
Once again, neither of them dared to speak.
Sebastian wanted to say a million things, but he knew it wasn't the right time. And when it came to Di, he wanted to take things slow, to cherish every moment, and most of all, to put her well-being first.
Diana, on the other hand, had always seen Seb as a safe space ever since she joined Toro Rosso in 2008. But now... it was different. Maybe it was what she had been trying to deny finally surfacing that feeling that had been there for about two years, back when he was still dating Hanna.
Maybe the silence they were sharing now would eventually become the revelation that neither of them had been brave enough to admit to themselves, or to each other.
"Seb..."
"Come what may, okay?" he interrupted her gently, taking her hand and tracing small hearts on it. "Never forget this: I'll be there, here, anywhere... but always with you. Come what may."

Sometimes I wonder if, besides whether I deserve everything I've achieved, I actually do it well enough to keep it. I mean... Do I deserve the position I have at Red Bull, or are they just keeping me because Seb was the one who got me in, and, on top of that, I'm now Mark's girlfriend? And regarding that last part... am I really what my boyfriend deserves, or, as dad says, is this just a passing fling of a few months where I only want to sleep with him to relieve stress? Seb says that as long as Mark makes me happy, that's what matters, but... does Mark really make me happy?
"I'll get it, Dad!"
Louisa's voice snapped her back to reality.
Carefully, she put away the journal he had given her for her twenty-first birthday, which had served as her therapy ever since, in the nightstand drawer. Then, she jumped out of bed with an energy she hadn't felt in a long time and cheerfully walked over to her desk. She carefully moved aside the scattered notes she still hadn't put away despite the semester ending two weeks ago and made sure everything looked as presentable as possible. Her straightened, dyed blonde hair fell over her shoulders, though her bangs needed a little fixing, nothing she couldn't adjust with her fingers. She also applied some lip balm, more to add a bit of shine than to keep her lips hydrated. Lastly, she adjusted her clothes as best as she could, trying to relax as much as possible and, most importantly, remind herself that he would be more than happy to see her, no matter how she looked.
She knew that Sebastian Vettel was her best friend, but in some way, she always tried to appear as perfect as possible before him to show she was worthy of his friendship.
Diana Wagner knew that, no matter how much Sebastian had cherished her since they met in 2008, when she joined Toro Rosso as an intern while he was already a driver, he was better than her in every way.
The door suddenly opened, pulling her out of her thoughts and revealing her two younger sisters peeking through the gap.
"Why are you taking so long?" Amelie, 15, inquired. "It's not like your boyfriend just arrived..."
"Yeah, yeah! Why are you getting all pretty?" The youngest, Louisa, 8, chimed in. "Seb is already downstairs waiting for you. He's talking to dad and uncle Hans about football, and I'm so bored..."
"Shut up you idiot," Amelie responded, giving her a light shoulder tap. "Don't listen to her," she turned to Diana. "What they're actually doing is grilling Sebastian about why he's here today and, more importantly, why he's staying with us for a few days."
Diana's eyes widened in surprise. As far as she could remember, Seb hadn't mentioned anything about staying over.
"What do you mean, staying with us? Seb said that?"
"Uncle Hans thinks he's just a friend, but dad believes you're sleeping with him while also sleeping with Mark," Amelie retorted.
"How the hell would I be sleeping with Seb?!" Diana shouted, making her sisters step inside the room and slamming the door shut. "That's... ridiculous, that's what it is," she added, trying her best not to curse.
"But if dad says it, it must be true, Didi," Louisa replied, a bit annoyed. "You know dad never lies to us."
"Listen to me, both of you," Diana cut them off. "I need you to behave and promise me something."
Amelie and Louisa exchanged curious glances before looking back at their older sister.
"I don't want you to mention Mark in front of Seb. No jokes, no side comments about how much you dislike him... nothing. Got it?"
"Why can't I tell Seb I don't like Mark if it's the truth? Do I have to lie to him?" Louisa asked with her characteristic innocence. "I like Seb a lot, and I don't want to lie to him..."
"Because..."
"If you're hesitating that much it must be because you really are sleeping with Seb."
"Amelie, shut it! Lou's here!" Diana scolded, glancing at Louisa.
"What does sleeping with mean? Does it mean you're dating? Are you dating like... dating?" Louisa asked, happily, looking at her older sister with curiosity and doubt.
"Seb doesn't have a girlfriend anymore, okay?"
Diana's statement left her younger sisters stunned. Louisa had liked Hanna quite a bit, and she had always been nice to her whenever they met. Amelie, on the other hand, even though she had liked the German woman, started wondering why that same German, who had seemed so in love with his girlfriend, had suddenly broken up with her.
"Seb isn't with Hanna anymore?"
Diana took a deep breath, trying to calm herself and give them a convincing answer, even though she didn't have one herself.
"Yeah, Seb isn't with Hanna anymore," she replied as calmly as possible. "Don't ask why because he didn't give me many details other than, well... that he needed a break."
"Does Mark know about this not-so-surprise visit?" Amelie asked, crossing her arms.
Diana's heart skipped a beat. If there was one thing she hated about her middle sister, it was how nosy she was for a 15-year-old. If she was like this now, Diana didn't even want to imagine what she'd be like in a few years.
"Not everything revolves around Mark, Ame," she brushed off the question because she didn't know how to answer that no, her boyfriend had no idea about this visit, which she was more than thrilled about. "Seb is my best friend, and he's going through a lot. And do you know what good friends do in bad times? They're there for each other."
"Yeah, yeah, whatever you say..." Amelie replied, unconvinced.
Louisa, who was about to say how happy she was that Vettel was there with them and how much she preferred him over Webber as her older sister's boyfriend, was interrupted by their father's deep voice calling from downstairs:
"Diana Wagner, get down here! Your guest is tired of waiting!"
Diana quickly checked her reflection one last time, grabbed her phone, and, before opening the door, turned to her sisters with a stern look:
"You two," she pointed at them, "no jokes today. Not a word about Mark or anything related to him."
The youngest nodded enthusiastically, bouncing slightly as she headed for the stairs. Amelie, however, simply shrugged and smirked mischievously.
"I'll think about it," she said before following Lou down the stairs.
"Amelie!" Diana hissed under her breath.
"Fine, fine. I promise..."
Rolling her eyes, Diana made one final check to ensure she looked perfect before stepping out. Her heart pounded uncontrollably as she descended the stairs. She tried to push aside any thoughts that could make her reunion with Sebastian awkward, or let her nerves get the best of her.
However, everything seemed to go to hell the moment her eyes landed on the German.
Sebastian was there, chatting animatedly with her aunt Johanna, who was chopping vegetables. Diana was taken aback to see him with his sweater sleeves rolled up, still wearing his Red Bull beanie, as he carefully cut something.
Afraid her friend might catch her staring, she quickly glanced at the dining table, where her father and uncle were still engrossed in the football discussion Lou had mentioned. Her sisters were at the other end of the living room, turning on the Wii, likely to start a game of Mario Kart and try to get Seb to join them.
She looked back at the driver the moment she heard him laugh, probably at something her aunt had said. He looked so natural, so comfortable, as if he truly belonged in their family. He hadn't changed much since the last time she saw him, nearly three months ago, but she suddenly felt a strange sensation in her stomach, similar to the anxiety she got during exams, but for an entirely different reason.
The more she observed him, the more she noticed how tired he looked. How... sad he seemed. And somehow, in a way she couldn't quite explain, that made her feel absolutely awful.
Or perhaps she was beginning to admit what she had never acknowledged to herself in order not to ruin the friendship she had always needed but never truly had.
"Ah, Diana! Look who I put to work. He's better than me at cutting onions. You should tell Seb to come visit us more often, so he can help me when your sisters don't want to."
Seb turned at the mention of his name. The smile he had missed so much appeared on his face the moment he saw Diana. Before she could say anything, he closed the small distance between them at an incredible speed and, without a word, embraced her.
She remained still for a few seconds, surprised and unsure of what to do. The contact completely unsettled her, but as soon as he started stroking her hair, she relaxed and returned the hug, wrapping her arms tightly around his waist.
"You don't even have an idea of how much I've missed you, Di," he murmured, pressing a soft kiss to her head.
"I missed you too."
And you have no idea how much, she thought, trying to swallow the lump in her throat.
Why did her entire being seem to change, becoming something so complicated and inexplicable, whenever he was near?
If only he knew what that farewell at the last Grand Prix of the season had meant to her...
When they pulled apart, the driver studied her face carefully. There was something about her that felt a bit unfamiliar... different. He couldn't tell if it was her hair, a little less blonde since the last time he saw her; her dark circles, more pronounced than they should have been after three weeks of vacation before starting her final university semester; or the evident weight loss.
"I really wanted to see you again," he forced himself to say instead of asking what had happened to her to make her look so... different.
Diana forced a small smile and lowered her gaze, embarrassed by not knowing what else to say. She had thought of telling him that he looked great, because, in her eyes, he always did, but decided against it, considering the reason he had come to visit.
"So they put you to work, huh?" Di finally said, gesturing toward her aunt, who was watching them while continuing to prepare dinner.
"Not really. I volunteered," Seb replied with a smile. Johanna was about to say something, but the young man interrupted her. "It's the least I could do after you let me stay here for a few days."
Diana swallowed hard. She was more than happy to have her friend stay with them for a few days, but... why couldn't she remember anything about that conversation?
"And let me tell you, he's an excellent volunteer. If only Mark were more like..."
"You don't have to treat him like royalty, Johanna," Diana cut off her aunt before she could say more. Seb blushed and started nervously playing with his hands. "He's just..."
"Yes, I know, your friend," the woman replied, apologizing to her niece with a glance. "But, as your friend, he is also our guest, and he deserves the best. Besides, he doesn't complain about my excellent taste in music, unlike someone I know..." She added, glancing sideways at her husband.
Seb chuckled, leaning against the kitchen counter without breaking eye contact with Diana.
"At least it's better than those weird songs Ricciardo used to play when we were at Toro Rosso. Do you remember when he got obsessed with playing Nessun Dorma before every race?"
"Oh God, don't remind me. I love classical music, but I still have nightmares about that."
They both laughed at the memory of the year they met, when they had become each other's biggest support. Everything had changed, perhaps too much, in those short two years, but what mattered most was that they still had each other, no matter what.
Diana tried to step a little closer to Sebastian, but the sound of her father dragging his chair and moving toward them made her step back shyly.
"Well then... what's the plan, Vettel? Are you staying here for a few days?"
Seb nodded nervously at Bernhard's question. Even though he knew Diana's father well and had met him countless times, he always felt nervous whenever they shared the same space, especially when they had a conversation.
"Well... yes. If that's okay with you, of course," he quickly added, stepping closer to the older man. "I needed to get away from Switzerland for a bit, and even more from Heppenheim... to clear my head. And, to be honest, there's no one else I'd rather spend this time with."
His gaze shifted to Di, who was trying to process his words. She kept glancing nervously between Bernhard and Sebastian, afraid one of them might say something inappropriate.
"Of course, kid," her father finally responded, giving Seb a pat on the back. "You know you're more than welcome here. Hell, I should pay you extra for taking such good care of my Didi when you're away!"
"Dad..."
"I do it gladly, Bernhard. I've already told her, but in case she's forgotten, let me say it again: I love spending time with Di."
Diana lowered her gaze, embarrassed by all the attention she was receiving, and especially by the scene unfolding before her. She didn't need to look up to know that Seb had his eyes on her, just like her father. She also knew that her aunt was probably muttering some comparison between her best friend and her boyfriend, and that her uncle would soon join in.
Sebastian took a chance and, while continuing to talk with Bernhard who, due to his worsening health, had quickly taken a seat on one of the dining island stools, wrapped an arm around Di's shoulder.
To their surprise, no one objected.
"Uh... Dad?" Diana spoke up, her voice small and hesitant as she carefully removed Seb's arm and leaned over the kitchen island.
"Something wrong?"
"Would you mind if... if Seb and I went for a walk?" She asked timidly. "And would it be okay if we had dinner out?" She added, this time addressing her aunt.
Johanna set down what she was doing and turned to her niece. She narrowed her eyes slightly, inspecting the pair of friends. Then, she placed the knife on the cutting board and turned to Diana with a smile.
"Why are you asking me? You're twenty-one, almost twenty-two, sweetheart," she answered, now turning to Bernhard, who agreed with his sister-in-law. "You don't need our permission to go out, Diana."
Diana opened her mouth to respond but immediately closed it again. Her cheeks turned a deep shade of red, standing out even more against her pale skin. She stared straight ahead, absentmindedly playing with the hem of her sweater to avoid saying anything inappropriate again.
To hide the fact that her insecurity and discomfort had, in some way, worsened since certain events with a certain person.
"I think Diana just wanted to check in case you were making extra food for dinner, Johanna," Seb intervened. Diana met his gaze, silently thanking him for stepping in. "But if you're worried about anything," or Di, he thought to himself, "I promise to bring her back at a reasonable hour, safe and happy."
Johanna raised an eyebrow. Meanwhile, Hans and Bernhard exchanged knowing looks, probably misinterpreting the German's words, as they suddenly started chuckling.
"Don't even think about setting a curfew for my girl, Vettel. You're a Formula 1 driver, and my daughter is six months away from graduating university. You're both adults, for God's sake!" Bernhard laughed, trying to keep a straight face.
"We just don't want you getting into trouble," her uncle added. "I'm a lawyer, but I wouldn't want you two as clients, especially not for free."
Sebastian widened his eyes, unsure how to take the comment. Diana, on the other hand, just tried not to die of embarrassment, silently praying that the German was taking everything in stride.
"Not to doubt you two, but, you know... trust is a dangerous thing."
You can say that again, Diana thought, remembering the man twelve years older than her who, during their entire winter break, had barely reached out more than twice with phone calls that didn't even last five minutes.
"Well, I think it's best if we start heading out," Seb commented as he grabbed his jacket from the back of a chair. "Come on, Di," he said, taking her hand while waving goodbye to her family with the other. "We won't be late, I swear!"
The girl's sisters said their reluctant goodbyes, thinking the German was going to play with them. Meanwhile, Hans and Bernhard started making bets about what would really happen between the two that night.
Johanna was the only one who walked them to the door, carefully adjusting their coats, scarves, and hats as if she were their mother.
"Have fun, you two, you deserve it. And you, Seb, don't think you're getting out of helping me tomorrow. You still have to teach me that lemon cake recipe you always say your mother makes."
"Don't worry, Johanna," Seb replied while holding the door open for Diana. "I'm saving my morning for you and your cooking sessions."
The woman smiled, delighted to have the German around, and said goodbye to them once more.
As soon as they stepped outside, the cool night air hit their faces. Diana took a moment to inhale and exhale, relaxing and feeling, for the first time in a long while, free. More than anything, she felt like herself. Seb walked beside her, unable to stop smiling, grateful to be in his best friend's hometown, with her by his side, helping him get through the rough patch caused by his breakup with Hanna.
"Do you always blush that much around your family, or is it just when you have company?" Seb asked after a while, nudging her playfully with his shoulder while keeping his hands in his pockets.
"Don't start with that, Seb! You know I can be a little shy sometimes..."
"It's okay, I already knew," he interrupted. "I think it's really cute when you blush."
"Sometimes you're unbearable, you know that?" she shot back, playfully.
"I know, but you love me anyway."
It wasn't a question, but a statement. One Diana couldn't argue with because she completely agreed.
And that, more than comforting her, made her worry more and more about their relationship.
Despite the recent snowfall, the streets of Linz were busier than Diana had expected. The ice-skating rinks were packed, and to her surprise, the winter market stalls, forming a kind of fair that attracted people of all ages almost daily and which she loved visiting, were overflowing with people.
Although taking Seb there had been her original plan for his first day, she had decided to do something more intimate with him instead, something she hadn't done in a long time, not even with Mark. However, she knew her relationship with the German was special enough to share something so personal with him without regretting it afterward.
"Since this is the first time you've come to visit me, I've put together a little tour so you can really get to know my city," Diana explained, looking at him. "That way, when you leave, you'll know Linz as well as I do. And maybe, if one day you bring someone here..."
"You're going to show me what tourists don't usually get to see, aren't you?" he interrupted. "I mean... promise me you'll show me every last little corner, even the ones way out on the city outskirts. That could really come in handy someday."
"No problem. I'll show you everything you want," she replied, flashing him a proud smile.
He laughed at her comment. Taking his hands out of his pockets, he awkwardly brushed his right hand against Diana's left. She blushed and tried to move it away, but Seb didn't let her, he ended up taking her hand, not caring that they were just friends and that she had a boyfriend.
Because they were just that, friends. No matter how much he wanted it, he could never, in his life, date someone like her. Because while Mark was already a man with a clear path and a well-established career, he was just a twenty-something still learning from every mistake he made.
With their hands still intertwined, Sebastian's gaze roamed the streets, the people, and the buildings surrounding them.
"This place is beautiful, and peaceful in its own way despite the bustle. I can see why you love it so much..."
Diana nodded, feeling her heartbeat speed up. Linz wasn't the best city in the world, nor did it hold many good memories for her since her mother's suicide and her sudden move to Spain. But, at the end of the day, it was her home, and hearing him appreciate it meant more to her than she could ever admit.
They walked in comfortable silence for a while, stopping every so often so Diana could point out her old school, her university, and even her favorite café, the one she used to go to when studying at her aunt and uncle's house became too chaotic.
However, just as they were nearing the place Diana wanted to take Seb, he broke the silence with a question that, while not entirely unexpected, was the last thing she thought he would ask.
"How are things with Mark?"
The casual question made Diana slow her pace slightly before quickly recovering and catching up with Sebastian.
"They're... fine," she said, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "You know, the usual. He's in London, I'm here, we call each other..."
Don't lie to him, Diana.
"And does that make you happy?"
"Yes, of course."
She wanted to tell Seb the truth, but she couldn't.
This time, he was the one who needed support, not to listen to complaints and tears about a relationship with a questionable age gap and an even more questionable dynamic.
"And how are you doing after everything with Hanna?" Diana asked, changing the subject and hoping she hadn't overstepped. "Ever since you called to tell me what happened, I've been worried, but I didn't want to push..."
Seb's expression darkened slightly. He let out a sigh that Diana was sure he had been holding in longer than he would've liked, staring straight ahead as they walked.
"We're okay. I'm okay," he corrected himself. "Nothing weird happened or anything, it's just that..." he trailed off, possibly choosing his words carefully before continuing. "We ended things amicably, you know? No hard feelings, no fights, nothing like that."
"Well, I'm glad to hear that," Diana replied, choosing her words carefully. "It caught me completely off guard because... I don't know, it seemed like everything was fine. You two were together for three years..."
"Yeah, three pretty good years, but I think we realized we were only staying together because we were comfortable, because it was our routine, not because we actually loved each other." He paused, looking at her. "She never said it, and neither did I, but I get the feeling we wanted completely different things in life, and that was hurting us, even if we didn't mean to."
"And that makes it even harder..."
"Exactly," he admitted, giving her a bittersweet smile. "But I feel like it was the right decision for both of us. It's just that... making such a risky choice after thinking about it for so long, and wanting to do the right thing, is tough. Honestly, right now, being alone again is really difficult, but I guess it's just a matter of time before I get used to it."
Diana didn't know what to say, and she had no clue what deeper meaning lay behind Sebastian's words.
"You won't be alone, Seb," she managed to say, trying not to get nervous. "You have me."
He looked at her, his body relaxing slightly as their steps fell back into rhythm.
"I know. And, even if you don't believe it, that means much more to me than you can imagine."
For a moment, nothing and no one else existed, just them. They stared at each other, lost in each other's eyes, as thoughts raced through their minds, thoughts that, if spoken aloud, would haunt them for the rest of their lives, shattering everything they knew and had between them.
It wasn't until Diana cleared her throat and quickened her pace that the moment broke.
"Come on, we're almost there. I have a reservation at seven, and I don't want us to be late."
"Wherever you say, my dear tour guide," Seb replied.
After walking for a few more minutes, Diana stopped in front of a restaurant tucked away in a small alley. Sonnengarten, garden of the sun, was written at the top of the façade, painted in a warm yellow color. Along with the soft lights illuminating it directly and the hanging flower baskets, it invited people to step inside. The instrumental music playing, what seemed to be rock from the '60s and '70s, was the cherry on top.
"Well, here we are," Diana said, visibly excited as she entered the restaurant.
Seb watched her, noticing the special sparkle in her eyes.
"Thanks for bringing me here. It's obvious this place means a lot to you."
"It does," she nodded, a small smile on her lips. "My mother used to bring us here every weekend. We always switched up our orders because, well, we loved, and still love, trying new things, but my dad always ordered a schnitzel," she explained with excitement. That only made Seb feel even more grateful that she had brought him to such a special place. "My sisters and I would always try to convince him to try something different and share some of our food, but he always refused and made up some silly excuse."
"So, this is like... a sacred place for you, right?"
"Yes, very much so. But since my mom passed away, we haven't come back. Actually, this is the first time in years that I've come here to eat..."
Diana's statement made Seb's chest tighten. He knew how Rosalie, Diana's mother, had died nearly eight years ago. He was fully aware of the impact it had on her life, which was precisely why he was more than grateful that she was sharing this detail, this part of her life, this seemingly important family tradition, with him.
Her friend. Her best friend.
"Really, Di, thank you for bringing me here," the driver said sincerely.
Before she could respond, a middle-aged man appeared in front of them. He quickly approached Diana and hugged her, a gesture she gladly accepted.
"My dear Miss Wagner! It's been so long, little one! You finally decided to come eat here again... it was about time!"
"I'm really happy to be back as a customer, Matthias," Diana replied kindly.
The man's eyes shifted to Sebastian, whom he openly scanned from head to toe. Once he recognized him, his eyes widened. After all, it was widely known in the city that Diana Wagner was not only an intern for one of the most successful Formula 1 teams of the past year but also lucky enough to be working with one of the sport's rising stars.
"Well, well, Sebastian Vettel!" the man exclaimed excitedly, offering his hand to the German, who shook it with a smile. "Are you two dating?" he asked curiously.
"No, no! He's just a good friend of mine," Diana said quickly, avoiding Seb's gaze. "My... boyfriend," she managed to say, barely containing her embarrassment, "is the other Red Bull driver, Mark Webber."
"Oh, well, no problem!" Matthias laughed heartily, giving Seb a friendly pat on the shoulder. "Any friend of our Diana is a friend of ours. Now, come on, I'll take you to the Wagner family table. I've been reserving it since Diana told me she was coming."
Sebastian observed his friend as the waiter led them to a table in a corner by a large window. Diana simply shrugged and smiled, feeling proud to see how happy and, most importantly, how at ease the boy seemed.
Diana couldn't help but feel a little nervous and special at the same time when, before she could sit down, Seb pulled out her chair for her and pushed it in gently once she was seated.
"Well, Miss Wagner, I'll be back in a bit with the dishes I know are your favorites. Enjoy your evening."
The waiter winked at them and, once he was far enough away, Diana buried her face in her hands, utterly embarrassed by the scene they had just lived through.
"Oh god... I can't believe he thought we were together," she murmured. "Everyone here knows I'm with Mark..."
"Well, maybe they think we'd make a good couple."
Seb laughed at his own comment, and she shot him a death glare, though it didn't last long as the corner of her lips curved into a smile.
"Don't start with that too."
"I'm just joking, Di," Vettel said with a satisfied grin. "Besides, if people think we're together and we get, I don't know, good tables like this one," he pointed at their spot, "and free pastries like the ones the bakery lady gave me near your house today, I wouldn't mind pretending we're a couple."
Diana rolled her eyes but couldn't stop the flicker of warmth that bloomed inside her as she imagined a hypothetical situation where she and Seb were together, where they shared more than just friendship.
"Well, I think it's time we have a slightly more serious conversation, so no boyfriends, exes, or fake relationships," Diana said as she leaned forward, resting her elbows on the table. "What's the plan for this year? Do you think you can win the championship?"
"That's the goal, my dear Di," he chuckled, pouring himself a glass of water and taking a sip. "For now, I think the car is good, and we have a strong team, but you know how things can go..."
"The important thing is that you have what it takes, Seb: talent and ambition."
He smiled, a little shy at Diana's compliment, and adjusted himself in his seat.
"So, you better be ready to put up with me every time you win," she continued playfully.
"Only if you ditch Mark so we can celebrate properly."
Sebastian immediately realized he might have messed up with that comment.
Diana, instead of responding, did her best to force a smile and act like she hadn't heard what the German had just said.
"By the way..." the driver spoke carefully, knowing he might be treading on dangerous ground. "When are we going to plan something? I came here, but you know... plans like we used to make when we were at Toro Rosso and before you started dating Mark..."
Diana didn't know what to say. She hesitated before answering, thinking about how things had changed since she was single and he was in a relationship with Hanna—who had always been wonderful to her and never minded Sebastian and Diana hanging out together. She had even tagged along on some of their outings, something that made Diana feel terribly guilty but, at the same time, too bad to refuse given how kind both of them were to her.
"I don't know, Seb. Things are... complicated, different... It's nothing you don't already know."
It's obvious there are things Seb doesn't know. Don't fool yourself.
"Well, we'll come up with something," he replied, trying to believe his own words. "We could go out after a race, grab something to eat... Or, I don't know, during the summer break, I could take you to the karting track where I used to go as a kid and see Michael..."
Diana couldn't keep listening because it hurt. The idea of doing such personal and meaningful things with Sebastian was difficult to process, especially considering she was dating Mark, and no matter how much she tried to talk to him about it, he wouldn't take it well. She didn't deserve that kind of attention, even though it was the only way someone had ever shown her... affection, love, or any of its variations. Mark had barely paid her any attention since they started dating, something she had noticed in other couples but had never experienced herself.
Seb kept talking, but the sound of her phone ringing, a childish melody set by his sister Louisa, snapped her back to reality.
Diana's heart clenched when she saw Mark's name on the screen.
Her stomach twisted, anxiety creeping in, the weight of everything she hadn't told anyone, not even Seb, suddenly pressing down on her again, returning in full force as if it had never left, not even when Webber seemed to have forgotten about her.
"Are you going to answer?" Seb asked, tilting his head slightly as he noticed how doubtful she was.
Diana didn't move. She couldn't. She wasn't ready to face a call from her boyfriend after weeks of not hearing from him, especially not in the situation she was in.
And even less so considering who she was spending time with at that moment, and how stubborn Mark had been about her relationship with Sebastian ever since they started dating, even knowing that they were, in reality, just very good friends.
"It's just... It's Mark," was all she could whisper.
"And are you just going to let it ring? Come on, Di, he's your boyfriend. It's not like he's going to kill you if you answer."
"I'll call him when we get home," she swallowed hard, feeling her hands starting to sweat.
"Di," Seb said, sounding more authoritative than he would have liked. "It's just a call. What's the worst that could happen?"
If only you knew...
"Come on, Di, pick it up. If he's calling, it must be important."
Her fingers trembled slightly until she finally decided to press the answer button.
Diana forced a smile, even though the only thing she wanted to do at that moment was cry and tell Sebastian the whole truth. Instead, she put the phone to her ear and answered, trying her best to keep her voice steady.
"Hello, Mark..."
"Damn, it's about time you answered. Do you mind telling me where you are? I've been trying to reach you for days and days, and you've just ignored me."
It's a lie, Diana. He hasn't called. He's manipulating you because, once again, he's forgotten about you...
"I'm out," she replied, controlling everything she said while looking at Seb, who had started talking with Matthias. "I'm having dinner."
"And who exactly are you with?" Mark asked disparagingly, totally suspicious of her.
Diana gripped the phone tightly and opened her mouth to respond with the first excuse that came to her mind. But before she could, Matthias started talking too loudly with her companion:
"You're such a gentleman with our Diana, Sebastian! Are you sure you're just friends?"
"Just friends, Matthias, really," Seb replied cheerfully, although alert to Diana, who seemed terrified.
"Sebastian? What exact Sebastian, Diana?"
Diana's blood ran cold when she heard the aggressive tone Mark was using on the other end of the phone.
"Mark, it's not what you think..."
"Who the fuck are you with, Diana?" Mark exploded. Even Sebastian and Matthias, who were still talking, seemed to hear the yelling coming from the phone. "Are you with Sebastian Vettel? Is it the Sebastian Vettel I'm imagining?"
"Mark, please, let me explain..."
"Explain what?" the Australian's voice started getting louder and angrier. "That you went out to dinner with him as if that was the most normal thing in the world?"
Seb, noticing the sudden change in Di, both in her mood and body language, became alert. He turned his attention back to the waiter, this time giving an excuse after he placed all the plates on their table so that he could leave and give them some privacy.
Diana's tense posture and the fact that she was so silent, just listening to what his teammate was saying on the other side of the line, didn't go unnoticed by him, and he knew there was more between them than what his friend wanted him to know.
"Take good care of her, Sebastian. Diana deserves the best."
Seb smiled kindly at Matthias's words, and his eyes followed him until he was far enough away. His eyes then returned to Diana.
Something wasn't right, and it was creating a feeling of internal rage in Seb that he hadn't felt in a long time.
"Mark, I'll call you when I get home, okay? I don't want..."
"So you're with him, right?" the Australian spat, not letting her finish. "Sebastian Vettel... Out of all the damn people you could be with, you're with him..."
"Mark, please... Let me explain..." She started, her words already bordering on pleading.
"Think about the kind of girlfriend you are, Diana," his voice, though calm now, she knew he was about to start throwing poisoned darts that would torment her in the weeks to come. "While I'm busting my ass working, training, doing everything I can to move the damn team forward, you're out there with the guy you claim is your best friend, going on dates. How would you feel if it were the other way around, Diana?"
"It's not what you think," she whispered, unable to control the tremor in her voice.
"Oh really? Then what is it? Because to me, it looks like you're acting with another man the way you should be acting with your boyfriend. How do you think that makes me feel, huh?"
Don't believe his words, Diana... He's trying to convince himself that it's your fault just because he's ignored you for almost a month...
"Mark, he's my best friend, and you've known that since before we started dating. I haven't hidden it from you, just like I'm not hiding anything from you now."
Sebastian, paying close attention to every word from the girl, felt his heart drop at what she had said, especially the tone she used.
Diana mattered to Sebastian, just as he mattered to her.
"I wouldn't take a girl to the city I grew up in if she was just my best friend, leaving my girlfriend feeling like second best, but hey, to each their own..."
Diana sighed, unable to stop looking at Seb, hurt by the words Mark had just said, even though she convinced herself, despite knowing she was lying to herself, that the Australian cared about her enough to consider her a girlfriend.
Oh my God, Diana, you haven't even met his parents yet...
"You're being unfair," was all the girl could say.
"No, if anyone's being unfair here, it's you, Diana," replied Mark. "You're selfish, and you think of no one but yourself."
"I don't want to keep talking about this, Mark..."
"Of course you don't. Because you don't want Seb to know what you're really like," Webber said harshly. "Maybe I should tell him myself. Do you think he'd believe me? Would he still want a bitch like you if he knew the real you?"
Her stomach dropped at what Mark had just said. She didn't know what to say; she didn't know how to contradict him because she knew it was impossible to make him think otherwise.
The worst part? Sebastian's face went completely pale, which made her worry even more about what her friend might now think of her.
Without saying anything else, and while she still faintly heard the Australian's reproaches, she ended the call, throwing the phone harshly on the table and unable to control her hands, which were shaking more and more.
"Di..." Seb spoke, unsure of how to approach the conversation he wanted to have with her about what had just happened.
"It's... It doesn't matter," she corrected herself. The last thing she wanted was for that heated conversation she had had with Mark to ruin her time with Seb, especially her stay with the German. "Let's eat and let everything else rest, okay? I've been planning this for weeks, and I don't want to ruin it because of a conversation that never should have happened."
Seb didn't seem entirely convinced by her words, and even less by her attitude. He knew the girl was broken inside at that moment, and nothing hurt him more than knowing he didn't know how to help her.
"Di, if something's wrong... you can tell me. You know that, right?"
She tried to force a smile again, but it was impossible. Instead, tears began to fall from her eyes, and no matter how hard she tried to control them, she couldn't.
"It's okay, Seb, it's nothing. I swear."
Lie to yourself if you want, but don't lie to him.
"Really, Di... No matter what you need or when you need it, I'll be here... You're not alone, Di, okay? Come what may."
The girl looked at her hands, now in Seb's. His thumb was calmly rubbing over them, something Seb knew perfectly well relaxed her when she had anxiety, like now, when she felt on the edge of a panic attack; or at least, that's what the constant feeling of suffocation she couldn't shake off told her, no matter how hard she tried to control her breathing and especially promise herself that everything would be fine.
Don't be so dramatic, Diana, Mark's voice echoed in her head in such a scene, making her pull her hands from the table and hide them beneath it, embarrassed.
Sebastian sighed, knowing he wouldn't stop trying to help her, no matter how reluctant she was. If she wanted to end the contact, so be it, but that didn't mean he'd stop trying to make sure she was okay.
"I mean it, Di," the guy insisted. "Whatever it is you're going through, you don't have to do it alone. You're my best friend, and best friends are there to support each other. Just like you're doing now, with me, with Hanna," he added.
She looked up at him again, and her chest tightened. How could he be so noble with her? How was he able to say the words she needed to hear at every moment? With Mark, she felt small, as if she didn't matter at all, but Seb... he made her feel like a princess straight out of a fairy tale, whose ending was still to be written.
"Thank you, Seb," she murmured, unable to take her eyes off those blue eyes that so relaxed her. "For... everything."
"You don't have to thank me, Di. That's what friends are for."
She wanted to believe him. She wanted to believe that, unlike her boyfriend, if they even were, or ever had been, someone could care about her. She didn't want to give her best friend false hopes, but the way he treated her, how it seemed like he cared...
Why did Seb make her feel like the most special person in the world when the person who was supposed to care about her the most didn't even bother to try?
Sebastian Vettel knew Diana Wagner like the back of his hand, and that was exactly what scared her the most.

Diana Wagner had only two stable things in her life: Formula 1 and her relationship with Mark Webber… or, at least, that’s what she thought.
Despite having a father battling worsening pancreatic cancer, two younger sisters to care for (even with the help of their uncles), and the constant pressure of standing out in a male-dominated world, the Austrian was always ready to put others before herself. That’s why when Sebastian Vettel, whom she considered her best friend ever since she joined Toro Rosso as an intern in 2008, unexpectedly broke up with Hanna Prater, his girlfriend of over three years, Diana didn’t hesitate to invite the German to spend the first days of 2010 with her since she wanted to help him clear his mind and, above all, give him the support he deserved.
However, Wagner’s imperfect fairy tale turned into a real nightmare when Webber was caught off guard hearing his teammate’s voice in the background during a call with her.
From that moment on, Mark’s insecurity spiraled into overwhelming jealousy. Sarcastic remarks, veiled insults disguised as criticism, constant questioning, and demands to push Vettel aside from her life made Diana convince herself that it wasn’t her boyfriend, 12 years older, manipulating her, but rather his desperation to hold onto her love and avoid losing her. Sebastian, on the other hand, was fully aware that that wasn’t love and that Wagner was slowly dimming, no matter how much she tried to prove otherwise and reassure him that everything was fine, just a small rough patch in their relationship.
One night, left completely alone and, once again, let down by Webber’s empty promises, and with a drunk Sebastian who kissed and confessed her she wasn’t his ex, and never would be her, Diana Wagner realized that, perhaps, she had always wanted something more than just a friendship with the golden boy, but she had simply chosen to accept the love she thought she deserved, even if that meant to never lose the sunshine of her life.

MEET DIANA VETTEL COME WHAT MAY SERIES
social media profiles ⋆ relationships coming soon
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
ABOUT DIANA VETTEL ⋆ BIRTH NAME: Diana Emma Wagner ⋆ NICKNAMES: Di (Seb), Didi (close family and friends), paddock royalty (alongside Seb), pit lane mum, Formula 1's Princess Diana ⋆ DATE OF BIRTH: April 27th, 1988 ⋆ PLACE OF BIRTH: Linz, Austria ⋆ NACIONALITY: Austrian ⋆ LANGUAGES: German (mother tongue), English and Spanish. Also, a little bit of French and Italian ⋆ HEIGHT: 1,62 m ⋆ WEIGHT: 54 kg ⋆ HAIR COLOUR: Redhead (natural), blond (dyed) ⋆ EYE COLOUR: Green ⋆ ZODIAC SIGN: Taurus
FUN FACTS ⋆ Her mum named her after Princess Diana of Wales. ⋆ Before being part of the Formula 1 world, she worked as a nanny, a cashier in a supermarket, cleaning houses and as a waitress. Also, she used to work at a coffee shop in her natal town during winter breaks so she could earn more money. ⋆ She shares birthday with her former boss, Helmut Marko. ⋆ She’s so stubborn to the point she was on labor during the 2019 German GP and almost gave birth to Matilda in the Ferrari garage. “You focus on your driving, and I focus on our daughter” is what she said to Seb when he felt like she wasn't feeling good. Stubbornness made her give birth to Emily, the Vettel’s elder daughter, in their home at Switzerland.  ⋆ She started being Oscar Piastri’s manager after having a conversation with him and feeling sorry he had to move countries to pursue his dream. Then, the Australian joined the “found family” group of Diana, formed by her husband and sisters, Max Verstappen and his girlfriend, Iryna Romagnoli, Carlos Sainz, Charles Leclerc, Irene Brühl, Mick Schumacher, her sister-in-law, Anneliese Vettel, Aristella Roeske and Lewis Hamilton. Occasionally, Britta (Seb’s PR and some kind of manager) joins them too. ⋆ She considers the Schumacher's as her second family, same as Seb himself and their kids. ⋆ She would have loved to be a Primary School teacher. ⋆ Alongside Seb, they're called “the paddock royalty”. However, she’s called “the paddock mum” since she worries about absolutely everyone in there, no matter what problems they might have had with her. Even if she's not there, just call her and she’ll help you the best she can. ⋆ She doesn’t need an alarm to wake up. No matter where she is (except when jet lag is hitting hard), she’ll always wake up naturally just a few minutes before her alarm starts ringing. ⋆ She has an unhealthy obsession with Taylor Swift, musicals (being her favourite one Moulin Rouge) and Spider-Man, so it makes sense that most of the presents Seb makes her related to that. ⋆ She has a smiley face Seb drew her once tattooed on her forearm. Other tattoos of her includes 5 bees (one for Seb, each of their kids and herself) and five flowers (one for each of her parents and sisters, and herself). ⋆ Some of her hobbies are baking, reading, singing, agriculture, hiking and learning languages.
BIOGRAPHY Born on April 27, 1988, Diana Wagner is the eldest daughter of Bernhard and Rosalie Wagner. Diana was born and raised in Linz, Austria, in a humble family until 2002, when, after the sudden death of her mother by suicide, she moved with her father and younger sisters, Amelie and Louisa, to Barcelona, Spain. This event was a crucial moment in the life of the eldest Wagner sister who, at only 14 years old, had to take on the role of full-time mother while trying to adapt to a new life away from home.
In 2006, Wagner completed Selectividad, the university entrance exam required to pursue higher education in Spain, scoring 9.55 out of 10. This not only allowed her to enter a Mechanical Engineering degree at the Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña, where she stood out as one of the students with the best grades in her class. Her performance was particularly remarkable as, in addition to being one of the only six women in the program, despite the lack of female role models in her field, her dedication and flawless academic results earned her the respect of both her peers and professors, especially when she started her internship in the world of Formula 1.
Her first steps in Formula 1 began in November 2007. Diana, like the rest of her classmates, received various internship offers from different companies. Motivated by her passion for motorsport’s premier category and her desire to professionalize in her field as soon as possible, the Austrian decided to apply for the only position offered by Scuderia Toro Rosso for engineering students in all of Europe. Surprisingly, after submitting her CV and presentation letter, Wagner was selected as a race engineering intern for the team. Years later, it was revealed that the reason she was chosen from over two thousand applicants was because, from the very beginning, they knew that the selected candidate should be a woman, and among the fewer than fifty applicants, Diana not only had the best CV but also was the one that spoke most languages.
At the start of her Formula 1 journey, the young woman was relegated to minor tasks, with no greater importance than watching the races from the team’s garage. This improved her relationship with Sebastian Vettel, one of the team's drivers, and helped her integrate more actively into Toro Rosso. The chemistry between them was so evident that, when Vettel was promoted to Red Bull Racing in 2008 to replace David Coulthard starting in 2009, Diana followed him there as well. From then on, the Austrian began working under the mentorship of Guillaume Rocquelin, better known as “Rocky”, Vettel’s race engineer. The relationship between them was key to Wagner's professional growth as Rocky not only taught her essential technical aspects but also how to handle the pressure in such a demanding environment like motorsport. Over the two years as an intern, Diana gained confidence in herself and inspired enough trust in Sebastian, Rocky, and the rest of the team to be promoted to Vettel's race engineer in 2012. following Rocquelin’s promotion to chief engineer of the team.
Regarding her personal life during those years, it was very chaotic, which directly impacted her personal life and, especially, her reputation. In 2009, shortly after turning 21, the Austrian began a romantic relationship with Mark Webber that gradually became quite toxic, possibly due to the 12-year age difference between them, the completely different life stages they were each in, and especially Webber's infidelities. To make matters worse, in July 2010, Diana's father passed away from cancer, leaving her fully responsible for her younger sisters, alongside her uncles, and forcing her to move back to her hometown to live full-time.
At the beginning of 2011, after several unfortunate encounters, Diana and Mark decided to end their relationship.
During all those years, Sebastian became her main support. Not only he did help her realize that her relationship with Webber was not what she deserved, but he also became, more than a teammate: her best friend. Their relationship was such that, years later, Diana and Sebastian confirmed that, despite having their respective partners when they met, back in 2008 and 2009, they fell in love with each other long before they even realized it.
At the end of 2011, Vettel and Wagner began dating, but it wasn't until 2012 that their relationship became public. Although they initially tried to keep it private because both are particularly reserved in personal matters, and also wanted to avoid controversies surrounding them, especially having their work and Wagner's position questioned solely because she was Vettel's partner, they eventually confirmed it at the end of the year, when they appeared together at the FIA Prize Giving gala. In his acceptance speech after being crowned Formula 1 world champion for the third time, Sebastian said, “I am forever grateful to have had [Diana] by my side for four years now” and that “I’m lucky to have found in my best friend and biggest support the love of my life.”
In April 2014, Diana and Sebastian confirmed they were expecting their first child and that Wagner would leave her responsibilities as track engineer starting in May, with Rocky replacing her until the next season. On September 10 of that year, they welcomed Emily Jane Vettel in their home in Switzerland, with an amazing birth story. A month later, it was confirmed that Sebastian would join Scuderia Ferrari in 2015 while Diana would part ways with Red Bull Racing and that her contract until the end of 2018 was dismissed. The Austrian ended up joining Scuderia Ferrari alongside her then boyfriend as his race engineer, same position she had at Red Bull Racing.
In June 2018, the couple married in a very intimate ceremony, which is only known to have taken place in Mallorca, Spain. Attendees included their immediate families and several close friends, such as Britta Roeske and her niece (and, also, ex-wife of Nico Rosberg), Aristella Roeske, along with the Schumacher and Brühl families.
In 2019, Diana Vettel joined Scuderia Ferrari as a race engineer for her now-husband, and they also confirmed they were expecting their second daughter. Unfortunately, her time at the Italian team was brief as, in 2020, the team announced Sebastian’s departure at the end of the season, and Diana’s departure happening immediately. This caused quite a bit of controversy, as not only was the announcement retracted right away, but according to Sebastian’s words, “Di didn’t know that the team wouldn’t count on her for the [2020] season.” He also said, “Ferrari put her in a very difficult position where she had to choose between her career and our girls.” For the Austrian, the decision wasn’t easy, but it was immediate: to everyone’s surprise, Diana chose their daughters, who were 5 years old and just a few months old at the time, and decided to explore new horizons. The Sunshine, a business in her hometown, Linz, that combines a coffee shop, bakery, bookstore, and gameplay area for, especially, young people, was an example of that new chapter.
In 2021, Diana returned to the Formula 1 world, but this time joining her husband in the new adventure that would be the newest team, Aston Martin, once again as a race engineer. She also announced her third pregnancy before the summer break of the 2021 season, and that she’d be taking a maternity leave until next season. During that year and the following one, the couple remained fully involved not only in the British team, but also actively participating in various social causes related to motorsport. By the following year, they both decided to say goodbye to Formula 1 to explore new horizons.
Currently, Diana Vettel continues to manage her family business and is dedicated to her family full-time. She is also an active figure, alongside her husband, in projects related to biodiversity, environmental issues and women in STEM. Additionally, she remains an active figure in the motorsport world, serving as co-director of the F1 Academy alongside Susie Wolff and as manager of Oscar Piastri, McLaren’s driver, whom she has represented since 2021.

OOPS, I DID IT AGAIN SERIES
BOOK II in WHERE WE ARE SAGA Available on Wattpad ⋆ Masterlist here
PAIRING: Lewis Hamilton x Aristella Roeske (original charater) TROPES: Friends to lovers, unwanted pregnancy, single mum TIMELINE: Formula 1 2018 season
Tumblr media
Aristella Roeske knew firsthand what it was like to be one of the most well-known figures of Formula 1, but not particularly for anything important.
Ever since her first public appearance in 2013 as Sebastian Vettel's PR, replacing her aunt Britta in that hell of a season, the young woman realized that things would not be easy for her. When her casual sexual encounters with Nico Rosberg, hidden from everyone, turned into an abrupt marriage followed by a divorce that came just as quickly, the German realized that she was destined to be remembered for life as the ex-wife of someone who, in the eyes of others, was perfect, even though the reality was far from that.
Aristella tried to think that the rumors were just that, mere rumors, and that people's inventions shouldn’t affect her at all... but they truly did until her return to the paddock a year later, in 2016, especially after pleas from her aunt and her dad, a leaked intimate video with her best friend as the main character and a few meetings at Lewis Hamilton's house.
However, no matter how much Aristella Roeske tried to rebuild her life in any of its aspects, life had other plans for her, ones that the blonde couldn’t have imagined.
After a night of weakness and vulnerability, and despite the attempts of Lewis, Sebastian Vettel and his fiancée, Diana Wagner, to keep her from falling into temptation after nearly three years clean, Aristella ends up having a small but significant slip-up with her ex-husband during one of the season’s kickoff parties. She didn’t think much of it until a positive pregnancy test made her realize that she might have landed herself in a problem with no easy solution.
