The fact that Starkid actually makes toxic straight couples fun is genuinely impressive
Gerald and Linda? Match each other's freak
Girl Jeri and Boy Jerry? Match each other's freak
Emma-bot and Paul 23? Match each other's freak (except calling Paul a freak is sacrilege, he's just some fuckin guy)
Max and Grace? Not a ship I personally like (I'm gay and basic, of course I prefer Michie) but they match each other's freak
Nibbly and unhinged women? I don't know if they MATCH each other's freak, but still iconic
Can you tell I'm making my way through Nightmare Time?

The wild soccer bunch as fishpeople/mermaids!
Alright! So I started to think...What If the bunch were fused with fishies/water animals! :3 These are just some of my opinions and I would be delighted to hear yours.
Leon: Beta/betta fish
So I considerd a jellyfish for Leon, since he can be a bit stingy, but I went for a Betta fish for Leon instead. Why? Well my reasoning for this is because the Betta fish are EXTREMELY territorial. Male betta don't get along with each other and will kill each other. Males don't get along that much with female bettas either, which ends up in bullying! :D 👍
I thought it fit Leon so I drew him as one another reason being that I just liked the idea of him being this frilly, colorful being that is just angry as hell. (The betta fish are really cool and have so many nice colors which is why I drew a couple variations)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Deniz: Koi carp
I don't really have that much reasoning for drawing Deniz as a Koi, like I did for Leon. I just associate Koi with pretty and rich, so It just fit Deniz inside my head. Another one I considered was a Moorish Idol, but I decided to abandon that idea.
Tumblr media
This is the quick draft I did for the other one, the moorish idol, but I didn't really like it that much. The colors would have been cool and I think they fit Deniz, but I couldn't figure out the shape, so it got scrapped.
Tumblr media
Vanessa: Orca
My reasonings for drawing Vanessa as an orca? Simple. I thought it was cool and fit her! She just seems like a fierce fighter and what a better way to respect that, than make her an apex predator of the sea!
I changed up the headscarf of hers a bit. I thought the headband would fit a bit better. :3
Tumblr media
Jojo: Clownfish
This is another one I went for just purely out of feels. My head just didn't let the thought of Jojo as a clownfish leave my head. I just thought the colors would be nice. Another one I considered was an otter since otters are cuddly and cute and he sorta gives me those vibes too.
I drew his hat as a headband instead. I thought it would fit the mermaid theme better. I like to think it's made of seaweed and has some sewed in pearls as decor.
Tumblr media
Marlon: Blue marlin
Sooo...You can probably see my reasoning. The name. Yup. Just because of the name. The Blue Marlin is a quite cool fish! I just decided to go with it!
I decided to change his hairstyle up a bit and I added the fishnet clothing piece or whatever it is. I added it because the species is often hunted in sport fishing. To my knowledge the marlin population has been hunted a lot.
Tumblr media
(This has to be one of my favourite drawings.)
Markus: Octopus
For Markus I went for an octopus. I just feel like he would be one taking in his spot as the goalkeeper. (the tentacles would come in handy) Another reason I thought it would fit is because of his hoodie. He just feels like he likes to hide, and most octopus species can camouflage themselves to their surroundings, PERFECTLY.
I just like to think he would have longer hair so I dew him with longer hair! :D I added the broken chains just because I think he would be edgy like that. The cape thingy is just a reference to his iconic hoodie. :)
Tumblr media
Raban: Axolotl
So for Raban I thought about drawing him as a seahorse, since they are very clumsy swimmers. But then I thought...Axolotls...And I liked that idea so much more!
I chose the axolotl, since they are quite clumsy swimmers and don't really have that great of an eyesight either. I also just liked the idea. :D
Tumblr media
EXTRA! :
Now here are some ideas I didn't draw but I thought of!
Willi:
So I thought of Willi as a hermit crab. He just gives me those vibes!
That one long nosed blonde wanker dude that recruited Leon or something:
I don't even know why I thought of this dude, but need I even say it... anglerfish.
The unbeatables:
I like to think of them as a pack of piranhas. Not that much of a threat alone, but in a pack they will tear you up.
If we think about them as singular beings, I don't have that many ideas. For Michi I would probably go for something like the blobfish or an eel or something idk. For Kong, my head just said A L L I G A T O R. And the other ones I don't know the names of TwT
Natasha:
The one my head thought of was the sea angel. A Very pretty sea slugs species. I don't even really know why.
So here was more of my useless rambling! I'll let you be at peace now and quit yapping. :D

Merlin BBC UK TV Show - Opinion Piece Part 7 - How The 2008 Series Reinterprets and Subverts Arthurian Legends
I was talking to a mutual friend about movies and TV shows in the fantasy genre and this friend bought up the fact how Arthurian legends have influenced most of them.
As that conversation progressed, we both agreed that the best adaptation of Arthurian legend was John Boorman’s 1981 classic "Excalibur".
youtube
However he seemed very amused when I told him that I was a huge fan of the 2008 BBC TV series Merlin. His opinion was that the TV series was "so childish, historically inaccurate and farcical" when he watched it.
I disagreed with him profusely and decided to make this post to outline my love of the TV series. I will share this post with this person so we can have further discussions on this topic. So here it goes:
Creators wanted to reinterpret Arthurian legend.
PROOF:
Julian Murphy, co-creator and executive producer: It all began in a restaurant on Kensington Church street, where I had lunch with the writer Jake Michie. And the pitch I gave him was very simple - It was 'I'd like to do the Arthurian story, but as an origin story in the same way that the Superman story had been done in [US TV series] Smallville.' And I think from there, it evolved.
But the decision that I think was at the heart of it, which was to make Arthur and Merlin contemporaries, rather than make Merlin the old man looking after the young Arthur, was there from the very beginning.
Source : https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/fantasy/merlin-at-10-the-cast-and-creatives-on-how-they-made-the-bbcs-boy-wizard-drama/
If you are a fan of the series i would recommend to read the article above for more information and details about the TV Show.
______________________________________________________________
There has never been a concise Arthurian story. The legends are an amalgam of numerous versions, the most popular of them being as follows:
History of the Kings of Britain by Geoffrey of Monmouth
Geoffrey’s account of the legendary king contains the first appearance of many of the iconic features of the Arthurian legend, including the wizard Merlin.
Lancelot by Chrétien de Troyes
Geoffrey of Monmouth never mentions Arthur’s most famous knight, and it wasn’t until ChrĂ©tien de Troyes wrote Lancelot and introduced the idea of an affair between Guinevere and Arthur’s most noble knight that Arthurian legend really got the ‘romantic’ treatment
The Mabinogion by Anonymous
The Arthur we glimpse in the Mabinogion is usually a marginal figure so it’s worth reading if you’re a fan of early legends containing King Arthur.
Le Morte d’Arthur by Sir Thomas Malory
This is a vast prose retelling of the story of King Arthur and the Round Table.
Idylls of the King by Lord Tennyson
Here we find the stories of Lancelot and Elaine, Geraint and Enid, Merlin and Vivien
______________________________________________________________
So for the 2008 series to collect Arthurian stories from various sources and try to repackage it to a modern audience is nothing new as the trend has already been established through works of T. H. White in The Once and Future King, Mary Stewart in The Crystal Cave, Mark Twain in A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court etc...
But it is through reinterpreting Merlin & Guinevere's storylines and using Magic as a motif that we get a brand new Arthurian story.
Guinevere
The name Guinevere means The Fair One in old Welsh.
Tumblr media
To cast Angel Coulby, a woman of color as one of the most famous white woman in history was a revolutionary act by 2008 British TV standards.
Tumblr media
In the legends, Guinevere is of royal blood. Gwen in the TV series is a servant of common birth who ascends to become a queen.
Here the audience come to see Gwen as the fair one based on the strength of her character and not the color of her skin.
In the TV show Arthur forgives Gwen's infidelity with Lancelot rather than having her sent to a nunnery or worse having her die. The old male authors were okay with Arthur bedding several women but expectation of chasteness placed on Guinevere always contained an undercurrent of misogyny.
In the TV Show, Gwen leads Camelot into the golden age, instead of being blamed for the downfall of Camelot due to her affair with Lancelot
PROOF : Excerpt From Hyable Article:
Meanwhile of course, Guinevere was left to lead Camelot into the golden age. “We’ve had that in our minds for about three series,” Julian Murphy says. “We felt that to take Gwen from a servant girl to a powerful and strong queen, a person who can bind the kingdom together, was the journey we wanted to do, and I think Angel [Coulby] delivered that brilliantly.”
Merlin
By having Merlin be of a contemporary age to Arthur they effectively changed Merlin from being a father figure to being a companion of Arthur.
The close bond that Merlin shares with Arthur in the TV Show effectively replicates Lancelot's close bond with Arthur in the historical legends.
youtube
Bradley James here confirms how in some legends Lancelot was in love with Arthur.
The gay subtext that was prevalent between Lancelot and Arthur in the historical legends is played out in all its glory between Merlin and Arthur .

Motiff of Magic
Tumblr media
Throughout the history of Abrahamic religions, there has been a connection between magic and (deviant) sexual practices. From the osculum inafme (kissing of donkey’s anuses and kissing the Devil’s anus) to witches who were supposedly inserting hallucinogenous mushrooms into their vaginas. The series association between magic and non heteronormative people becomes pronounced as series progresses.
And therein lies the appeal of the 2008 Merlin TV Series. With this modern retelling it succeeds in addressing certain historical wrongs, make it more representational, address issues and highlight subtext that have been historically ignored in popular media for the time frame it aired.
Arthurian legends no longer becomes the domain of a patriarchal Judeo Abrahamic narrative about a return to the good old days but of class mobility, race, feminism, queer acceptance and the belief of a better world to come in context of the TV Show.

Anime Spotlight #3: Project A-ko (1986)
Tumblr media
Join Ash as she takes a look at an underrated pride month anime classic and formative movie in her journey navigating queerness - it punches way above its weight and is well worth your time. Perhaps the greatest queer anime popcorn flick of all time, Acquired Stardust's spotlight on 1986's Project A-ko is here!
As previously discussed, time and tide can play funny tricks with our memory and perception. To that point, there's a special sort of magic that old media facilitates. Separation from the people and circumstances that produced it goes a long way towards helping us disconnect from preconceived notions and expectations to experience works more at face value. For a brief amount of time the brain is tricked into allowing itself to believe that this ancient work of art exists somehow outside of time and place - apart from not only the underlying political and cultural factors but also the individuals that birthed it.
Project A-ko is a work that synergizes incredibly well with this psychological trick but is perhaps doubly impressive when looked at in its proper context.
Tumblr media
Released theatrically in June of 1986 (only a little over a month before Studio Ghibli's first official project Castle in the Sky) and named after Jackie Chan's 1983 Project A, Project A-ko was born out of the staff behind foundational hentai OVA series Cream Lemon deciding to pivot and make a mainstream movie for theaters. Carrying a similar spirit to Project A, Project A-ko is a sci-fi action-comedy that smashes together the absurd and the mundane brilliantly.
Opening with a scene entirely in English (even in the Japanese language version) that sees a spaceship fall to earth and destroy the coastal southern Japanese city of Graviton, we flash forward 16 years to our protagonist (the eponymous A-ko) waking up to walk her friend C-ko to school for their first day. Deeply steeped in Class S tropes that had been popular in anime since the 70s that saw homoromantic relationships between women become somewhat normalized, C-ko catches the eye of rich and elegant classmate B-ko who immediately becomes overwhelmingly (and inexplicably) infatuated by her and deeply jealous of the relationship C-ko shares with A-ko, which stokes a rivalry for the affections of C-ko that gradually becomes more unhinged as the movie rolls on, even managing to slip in an unexpected cameo from an American fast food icon.
Tumblr media
It is here, beyond the basic setup, that Project A-ko begins to coalesce into something far better and much more clever than it has any real right to be. The lead characters, at first basic archetypes generically named but actually containing multi-layer puns, are wonderfully self-indulgent, given tons of room to come into their own and become a surprisingly strong ensemble. Gender, gender roles and sexuality are portrayed with a fascinating nonchalance (the likes of which is also featured in anime of the time such as Dirty Pair, as made clear with a very popular post on this very site). Fight choreography is shockingly good for the experience level of all involved (who by this time had mostly been known for their involvement in adapting Rumiko Takahashi's manga Urusei Yatsura).
The soundtrack (also in English and very of its time) matches the tone of the film in the best ways possible and helps to shape the film into something that is all too rare in the world of queer media: positive, happy stories celebrating the love people have for each other without getting too far into the weeds of angst and tragedy that is unfortunately often part and parcel with the real life queer experience. The Japanese voiceover cast features a stellar lineup of actors including Miki Ito, Emi Shinohara, Michie Tomizawa and Shuichi Ikeda (as well as a very early appearance by Megumi Hayashibara), and needless to say they knock it out of the park. One potential pain point is C-ko's loud and obnoxious nature, which despite being a central part of her character is toned down in the English dub. If one finds her to be especially grating, which is one of anime's hallmarks in this era, the English dub is serviceable enough.
Tumblr media
Watching Project A-ko was a formative experience for me, with its Goku-esque lead becoming a hero of mine. The final shot of the movie still manages to make me emotional every time I see it. Its simple concept of 'the superheroes and supervillains in your everyday life' is executed wonderfully and the bright-eyed, saccharine tone is an incredible breath of fresh air in contrast to the misery that queerness (and, more often, external reactions to said queerness) often brings about in our lives. There is so much to be said about this movie but as is so often the case with anime spotlights, it's hard to get granular without spoiling the experience and I'd much rather you see it for yourself than have it spoiled for you in what is in all likelihood the first time you're hearing of it.
They say that the best queer media is often accidentally made by straight men who have no idea that they're making queer media and that holds true for Project A-ko, who's character designer/animation director Yuji Moriyama says they simply hadn't put much thought into in that context which is unfortunately believable - although Project A-ko receives several sequels, they get progressively further away from the shockingly refreshing queer love story that is the relatable heart of the movie, contrasting its rising stakes and insanity that culminates with a three-sided battle that once again causes widespread damage to Graviton City.
Tumblr media
But such is the beauty of old media - for a brief hour and a half we are able to allow everything but the thing we're watching to fade away. To take it at face value. To see ourselves in these archetypal characters, and to brim with pride as they become engaging characters all their own. To hope that perhaps one day the world will treat queer people with the same sort of complete nonchalance featured in this movie, and to hope that we too may one day be able to have the sort of relationship between A-ko and C-ko in our own lives.
A gem hidden among the stones, Project A-ko is undoubtedly stardust.
-- Ash

The town of Fujikawaguchiko has had enough of tourists. Known for a number of scenic photo spots that offer a near-perfect shot of Japan's iconic Mount Fuji, the town on Tuesday began constructing a large black screen on a stretch of a sidewalk to block the view of the mountain. The reason: misbehaving foreign tourists. "Kawaguchiko is a town built on tourism, and I welcome many visitors, and the town welcomes them too, but there are many things about their manners that are worrying," said Michie Motomochi, owner of a cafe serving Japanese sweets "ohagi," near the soon-to-be-blocked photo spot.
