Sinbad: What’s it about?
Tumblr media
So Sinbad (Brad Pitt) is an adventurer/seafaring thief who sails around Jack-Sparrow style with his crew of lovable misfits. When he runs into an old friend (Joseph Fiennes), his past starts to catch up with him, and as he heads of on a voyage to make things right, he has to figure out how to heal old wounds and decide what he wants for the future. This is all made more difficult by Eris, the Goddess of Discord (Michelle Pfeiffer), who has chosen Sinbad to be a pawn in her pursuit of power and chaos.
I think the voice cast is excellent: Pfeiffer as the smooth and sinister Eris is especially amazing, along with Brad Pitt as the carefree hero who has to reevaluate his priorities. Catherine Zeta-Jones as Marina, his old friend’s fiancée who joins his quest, is also solid, and the supporting cast backs them up really well. Eris is definitely the highlight, though: her way of speaking, the fluid animation of her character, and how her hair and clothes constantly swirl around as if she were underwater, or outer space (which she often is). She’s an incredible villain, well designed and well executed, and her character is at the heart of the chaos that changes the other characters’ lives.

OMFG I LOVE GOTHAM! 🦇❤
I look forward to this show probably the most out of all my current shows, which is pretty amazing to say about a series I was very, very unsure about during S1-S2. "Real" Batman fans shat on it from the beginning and it's kind of the red-headed stepchild of all the Batman live action series, but only a show this off the fuckin wall could capture the dramatic, campy, dark as hell spirit of the recent Batman era.
I love everything they do with the canon characters. They've diverged unexpectedly from their original origins but feel more true in where they've ended up than in many other versions. The possible exception to this is Bruce, who is played decently by David Mazouz though his physicality and voice aren't quite there yet, but since he's Baby Bruce and not Batman it can be forgiven. But I do love his dad-butler-only friend, Cockney Special Forces Alfred, played aptly by Sean Pertwee.
Cameron Monaghan is a freakin revelation. I've never seen anyone be quite this brave with the Joker. He's covered just about every possible interpretation of the character in the process of playing two distinct versions of him in their development. He's giving us what could arguably be called the definitive Joker performance, especially since he's covered every base there is on him.
The villainous heart of the whole series has always been Oswald Cobblepot and Ed Nygma though. These are two completely unique takes on the Penguin and the Riddler and how they came to be, but they both feel like real, worthy versions of these iconic villains. Their love/hate friendship-to-conflict-to-mutual-respect arc is excellent imo, and even though it disappoints the shipper's heart, it's the most believable version of a relationship that they could have.
I've really enjoyed the mostly invented female characters like Fish Mooney, Barbara Kean (who is leaps and bounds better now than in S1), Tabitha, Lee, and Ecco (who one supposes is a proto-Harley, as in some stories there are many Joker henchgirls who have filled this role). Batman has only a handful of associated female heroes/villains and most of them are younger than him, so they've definitely had to get creative.
Camren Bicondova's Selina Kyle is probably the most Catwoman Catwoman I've ever seen, since Eartha Kitt and Michelle Feiffer anyway. I've had ambivalent emotions about the show's version of Poison Ivy, though her most recent "stage" feels very canon. I wish Huntress or Batwoman or Batgirl were around, but they're like, not even born yet.
The last few seasons have been especially wacky and wonderful and I'm going to miss Gotham a lot when it's over. Where am I gonna go for my over-the-top, disturbing, child-inappropriate Batman content then?
Tonight my mom said that the series has gotten worse and worse over time and I asked her why. She said because it's so crazy and violent. I replied, "No. That's why it's BETTER."

Nearly outside my San Francisco abode in Belmont (yes!!!!) while I took another 3 week long workshop with master drawer a painter and thinker and even, gasp, talker! And funny to beat the band. He actually ended up having to kick one dear unhinged but wealthy soul—even Michelle p Feiffer and her lovely daughter were there—. I’m soooooooo relieved he didn’t kick me out. If you don’t know his work check it out. Anyway , this was before health intruded, I was still tryna learn and who knows, climb the recognition ladders, and so of course I turfed this quick, done standing holding a small notebook with I guess a little wc palette. while exhausted sketch. From the road, cuz you needed a key or $$ to get into nature in San Francisco, even then—2012 or so. Now I came across it on an external and thought, I remember that hot road. The thirsty grass. The already stricken pines. (at San Francisco, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ca3s5merlTZ/?utm_medium=tumblr

Reparto: Desiree Akhaven, Rebecca Henderson, Halley Feiffer, Scott Adsit/ Reino Unido / Dirección y guion: Desiree Akhaven
Reparto: Ryan Gosling, Michelle Williams, Mike Vogel, John Doman/ EEUU / Dirección: Derek Cianfrance
Domingo 13 de enero, 7 pm. Richard Linklater: Dream is Destiny
Reparto: Julie Delpy, Ethan Hawke, Sahsa Lane, Shia LaBeouf/ EEUU / Dirección: Louis Black and Karen Bernstein
Lunes 14 de enero, 7 pm. The Fits
Reparto: Royalty Hightower, Alexis Neblett, Da’Sean Minor, Lauren Gibson/ EEUU / Dirección, guion y producción: Anna Rose Homer
Martes 15 de enero, 7 pm. Jacqueline Argentine
Reparto: Wyatt Cenac, Camille Rutherford, Alfredo Narciso, Richard King/ EEUU / Dirección y guion: Bernardo Britto

Sábado 19 de enero, 7 pm. In Bruges

Sinbad: Where are they now?
Brad Pitt went back to his old crew for Ocean’s Twelve in 04‘, and has been in plenty of things since. He had a brief cameo in Deadpool 2 as Vanisher, and last year was in a military comedy called War Machine that was disappointingly not an Iron Man spinoff. In 2019 he and a whole bunch of notable actors will be in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and a sequel to World War Z is in the works.
Catherine Zeta-Jones joined BP in Ocean’s Twelve as his love interest and formidable adversary; their scenes together are really funny. In 2017, she played Olivia de Havilland in Feud: Bette and Joan, which I only saw part of but really enjoyed. Her next show, Queen America, actually starts this weekend, and has her coaching beauty pageant contestants hoping to one day be Miss America. I suggest checking out 2013′s Side Effects, a really fantastic thriller from Steven Soderbergh, if you wanted to see her more recent-ish work.
Michelle Pfeiffer blew us away in 2007 with both Stardust and Hairspray (two of my favorite films) and did an excellent job in 2017′s Murder on the Orient Express. This year, right after her 60th birthday, we saw her join the MCU as Janet Van Dyne in Ant-Man and the Wasp, and it will be interesting to see what her part will be in next year’s mysterious Avengers 4. She’s also going to play a queen in 2020′s Maleficent 2, so we certainly haven’t seen the last of Michelle.
Joseph Fiennes was in American Horror Story: Asylum, and played Fred Waterford in The Handmaid’s Tale. Dennis Haysbert is also recognizable on TV, from his iconic role as President Palmer on 24 to this summer’s Reverie, and of course those Allstate commercials that make the most of his deep, soothing voice. Timothy West, who voiced King Dymas, played King Francis in Ever After 5 years earlier in ‘98, and was in a movie called We the Kings this year. I’m sensing a pattern...
Sinbad’s less prominent crew members have impressive resumes: voicing Jin is Raman Hui’s only acting credit, but he went on to direct Shrek the Third and became the animation director for the How to Train Your Dragon spinoff series, Dragons. Conrad Vernon has done lots of voice work for DreamWorks, including the Gingerbread Man in Shrek, and Jim Cummings, a voice acting legend, has 540 credits to his name; I’m sure you’d recognize him as the guard from Aladdin, among a ton of other roles. They really got a great team together for Sinbad, and I hope people rediscover it on Amazon and keep the legend alive.
