It amuses me to this day that HBO managed to get away with producing “Tell Me You Love Me”. You know how it’s a joke that “Game of Thrones” can come off as porn at times? “Tell Me You Love Me” had scenes that were so explicit that people legitimately thought they were watching porn.
In case someone thinks I’m exaggerating how people reacted to the show:

Catherine, once again appearing at the same place as Steve and Danny: What a small world!

If I had a nickel for every time my dark haired leading man (who plays a tortured character with PTSD who deserves the world) directed an episode of the final season of their long running show and gave themselves a beard because they want to grow a beard irl, I’d have two nickels which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.
Michelle Borth as a love interest fits in here somewhere too.

If I had a nickel for every time Michelle Borth had played the love interest of a character I was utterly obsessed with during my middle school years and who accidentally contributed a large amount to the development of my sense of humor, personality, and fashion sense, I’d have exactly two nickels which is not a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.

MCROLLINS ENDGAME
I love how #mcdonno fans bullied catherine off the show and they still ended up being endgame. #mcrollins will always be an actual couple in the show and can't belive people ship two straight character that would never get together

@itsgeniuskay We need to start by separating Cath from Michelle.
Michelle was rude and insulting to fans, including picking fights and name-calling. She was removed from the show because of this and her social media scrubbed of the super ugly things she had posted. I mention this piece of H50 history because many of the early 2010 fics that paint Catherine in a bad light/appear mysogynistic are reactions to Michelle’s social media posts. Fans dont like to be called names and insulted by an actress who isnt even a major character on their show. Weird, I know.
I also think its telling that PL spent more time working on convincing the studio to let Michelle back on the show, than he did on standing up for Daniel and Grace during the seventh season contract negotiations. I bring this up because PL just recently claimed, yet again, that he had absolutely no say in the contraction negotiations . This from the guy who invested a lot of time in wheedling the studio to forgive an actress who was thrown off the show for her awful behaviour, and whose hand can be clearly be seen in the gossip pieces shifting the blame to Scott and Alex for ‘not standing up for Daniel and Grace’.
Yeah sure PL, as the show runner, you had nothing to do with, and no say in, the salary negotiations for your show. Alex and Scott are the ones everyone should blame. Do you also want to sell me a bridge, too?🙄
(sorry that this is a bit of rant but its now been 7 years non-stop of Hollywood’s media lap dogs pushing PL’s lies about the salary negotations)
Now on to Catherine. I think Cath is a fascinating character. She grew up a military brat and clearly has no clue on how to have female friends. She is married to her job, to the point where she is at a loss when she leaves the military. And she clearly enjoys having friends with benefits relationships, but is pretty meh on being in a serious relationship.
I wish PL hadn’t tried to shoehorn Cath into being a love interest and I wish Michelle had behaved professsionally, because I would have loved to have seen Cath continue to break the unspoken Hollywood rules of what a women character can and cant do. I would have especially liked to have seen Billy live, and Cath and Billy’s detective agency spun off into another tv show. Adam’s character could have moved to the new show and we would’ve also been spared the writers having no clue what to do about his character. And Cath could have been a ‘married to her job’ bad-ass, who didnt need or want to be in a serious relationship.
I used to think that I didn't like Catherine Rollins because in the early 2010s fanfics tended to be quite misogynistic with the female love interests of the protagonists, so I thought my dislike of her was maybe internalized misogyny. But now that I watch H50 again I REALLY don't like her, the character seems horrible to me, especially knowing everything that happens towards the end of the serie. Do you think it's still some internalized misogyny? Or is the character really bad? I would like to see your opinions especially those who ship mcdanno

@meelopee you are right. Alex and Scott said in interviews that they supported Steve and Danny getting together, and the first couple of seasons used the same plot devices and even filming/camera angles to imply Steve and Danny were a couple.
PL had issues with this and treated Catherine and Rachel as one dimensional roadblocks instead of characters in their own right.
And as you pointed out, it not only made Rachel and Catherine unlikable because of their behavior, but it meant we never got to see Steve and Danny's getting into a relationship, and I agree with you that it would've only made the show stronger. Bones is a good example. there's also Castle. And Charlie and Amita from Numb3rs.
Great perspective!

FAN QUESTION: who is the strongest actor on hawaii five-0? (to you personally)
I’m so curious what the fandom’s general thoughts are! p.s. this is purely about acting talent, not about whether the character and/or storylines are “good” or not. it’s how they take the script and character narrative and make it their own. acting can be subjective so just vote with your heart. pretend this is the fake h50 oscar awards.
I put the main cast as options until the maximum tumblr allows, but if there’s someone I couldn’t fit that you think is the most talented, name them in the tags! there’s no right or wrong here, I just like seeing interesting discourse so feel free to explain your thoughts or debate in the replies 😌

At last, an H50 female love interest who’s kind of interesting!
Just watched S6E7, and I actually *like* Lynn Downey (Sarah Carter) as a person. Not more than I like Danny, natch. But I can see why Steve’d like her. There’s real chemistry there, which was sorely lacking with Catherine Rollins (Michelle Borth), no matter how hard TPTB tried pushing them together. I just wish TPTB had laid off the “thumb worthy” thing with Lynn (so OOC for Chin!) and not talked up how “hot” Lynn was. Especially given that TPTB populate the weekly H50 mise en scene with a constant stream of conventionally attractive bikini-clad women.
I think Danny and Rachel have chemistry, too. I at least believe they could’ve gotten together. Their flirting works.
Thing is, I’ve run into at least a couple of McDanno writers who loathe all the women (all women?) to the point of near parody, if not character assassination. One of them had Rachel try to kill Danny, which was… just ODD.
Tumblr media
Male showrunners seem to just suck at creating lifelike women love interests. Is it any wonder that male buddies so often seem perfect only for each other?
