Ever wanted to know if animated characters sometimes look like their voice actors?
Look up pics of Michael Horse from the 90s and then look at Peter Maza from Gargoyles.

Important black people who have touched me through pop culture:
In honor of Black history month I have decided to write a list of favorites black celebrities, characters, and writers.
Honorary mention first to Levar Burton for helping to instill in me a life-long love of reading. I have no category specific for someone like him so I’m naming him first. _____________________________ Favorite male black superhero: Blade: The Vampire Hunter. Favorite female black superhero: Storm. Favorite black male fantasy character: Shadow Moon in American Gods by Neil Gaiman. Stephen from Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, Lemuel Bridger from Midnight Texas. Isaac in Castlevania (Netflix animated series), And The Marquis de Carabas from Neverwhere. Favorite black female fantasy character: Hope in Sandman: Overture. (She was blue skinned but very obviously modeled after a little black girl.) Favorite black mythological (or religious) figures (female): The Goddess Isis (North African). and Saint Sarah (Roma). Favorite black mythological (or religious) male figures: Anansi (African) Favorite black male horror character: The Candyman. And Lemuel Bridger from Midnight Texas. Favorite black female horror character: Belle in Fright Night Part 2. Favorite black male cartoon character: Goliath from Disney’s Gargoyles (I know he’s technically a Gargoyle), and Winston from The Real Ghostbusters. (I hate when people call him a token.) And Isaac in Castlevania (Netflix animated series.) Favorite black female cartoon character: Elisa Maza (mixed race) Disney’s Gargoyles. As I mentioned elsewhere on this list, Elisa is VERY important. She’s one of the best (if not the best) written female protagonist I’ve ever seen in a cartoon. Favorite black female writer: D. L. Warner (author of Demon Under Glass) (Actually considering my recent disappointments, she's my favorite female writer, period, at the moment.)
Favorite black male writer: Kevin Grevioux (Yes, I actually liked I, Frankenstein. Shut up.), Alexandre Dumas, and possibly Aesop (debatable about his racial origin)
Favorite black Broadway actress: Daphne Rubin-Vega Favorite black Broadway actor: Norm Lewis. (I first heard him in The Little Mermaid as King Triton. I believe he went on to be the first black Erik in Phantom of the Opera.) Favorite black male voice actor: Keith David (He’d probably still be listed here if this list wasn’t strictly black actors.) Favorite black voice actress: Salli Richardson-Whitfield (probably my favorite voice actress in general outside of Idina Menzel. This one is very important because even now Elisa Maza in Disney’s Gargoyles is the best female protagonist I’ve ever seen.) and Cree Summer. Favorite black male actors: Keith David (I like him enough to list him twice), Samuel L. Jackson, Morgan Freeman, Sidney Poitier and when I was younger, Will Smith. Peter Mensah. Idris Elba. Isaiah Amir Mustafa. And Ariyon Bakare. Favorite black actress: (A few deceased ones come to mind, like a certain beloved catwoman with a fantastic pur but I’ll just list the living). Angela Bassett and Octavia Spencer and Lesley-Ann Brandt (mixed racial background). Favorite black male singers: Michael Jackson, Prince, Norm Lewis (again). Favorite black female singer: She’s getting up there in age but Tina Turner. And Anika Noni Rose. Note: If any non-binary fit any of these categories they would be listed too as both or neither depending on the preference of the person. I have listed one trans person but didn’t feel the need to point out which one was trans.

rewatching the batman:
bruce is So Young holy shit. somehow it works, esp with the very wistful (but not overdone) reminders about his parents
bats introduces himself as “I’m The Batman” in a clipped tone, as if they censored a certain word out of the phrase, so now I’m spending the rest of the episode mentally re-inserting that word
AW YISSSS ELLEN YIN
Ellen Yin and Elisa Maza have almost identical styles. idk if this is A Cop Thing or the shows are incidentally cribbing each other, cause I think there was a third female cop/detective in something who usually did the red jacket over black shirt+jeans+tight black shoes deal
some of the faces are... a little wonky. kinda reminds me of Jackie Chan Adventures, and in some places, Fairly Odd Parents
heeeey MoC being set up as the daylight-side protagonist. Also nice that Ethan Bennet isn’t getting all huffy at being suddenly assigned a partner, unlike pretty much every other TV detective
yanno if a crook wanted to ruin Bat’s day and reputation they could like... witness/reveal evidence that he’s a real thing. also would piss Rohas off
If I document everything fun/sassy Alfred says I’ll transcribe half this episode but rest assured that he is an absolute delight
RIP Surfer Dude Voice’d Orderly. Also this Joker intro is truly excellent+sets the stage perfectly
Ethan and Ellen either have Chemistry or Competent Writing happening and I’m on board with either
I like to think the young ladies on Bruce’s arms know some of what he’s up to and are playing along
did I was a shitton of this show (answer:yes) or am I recognizing Bruce+Joker’s voices from somewhere
Alfred’s hair+stache were gray in a previous scene and are black/dark now, so I’m thinking part of his relaxing night in involved a touch-up
why is bruce almost being flattened by his own batmobile so funny
hhhhho shit the clawed gloves.... i forget about those....
the batmobile animation may have been a big factor in my love for this?
joker’s expression’s do not mesh with his tone... not in a creepy way so much in a ‘bad art direction’ way
okay this is super minor but when ethan+ellen step over the police tape it bounces back, like, bouncily. nice detail.
ethan already knows ellen is a triathlete, also dives in right after her. i love this???
i love the hints about joker’s past. i don’t think they ever flesh it out, but it’s kind of better that way? joker existed before and apart from batman and they’re just now colliding
i was wondering why bruce stopped the jack in the box and then remembered, aside from property damage, that there’s still people in arkham. GOOD ATTENTION TO DETAIL.
WHAT ARE YOU GRAPPLING ON, BRUCE
“chap could use a dentist” “or a medic“
surprise.png
reliable.png
(he also does a little eye roll as he pushes up the sleeve and says “right then” that’s hard to capture (holy shit this 2-second scene conveys so much??? this show is a fucking treasure))
there’s no way to really convey it but Alfred does a Tone to get Bruce’s attention while he’s thinking on case details and when Bruce says who is it Alfred says “The Police” as ominously as humanly possible
alfred accidentally destroys a priceless vase and when bruce+co look over he just says “only a Ming” as lighlty as possible i love this man
there’s a great Harvey Dent parallel happening with Ethan+Bruce’s friendship but I’m pretty sure it doesn’t go down that route? also their relationship is really believable and refreshing
i bet ethan is sick of bruce asking if he’s under arrest every time he comes over
they do some really good stuff with the shadow of bats’ cape in jumps, projecting where he’s going to land while lending some gravity to it. it’s extremely hard to convey short of giffing it
the batsuit definitely has some fake muscle definition happening. like. bruce is built but he’s not that toned
actually that’s. a really good idea. it would make batman and bruce’s silhouettes that much more different, not so much someone would necessarily think about it but enough
i’m probs overthinking that one
i love how ethan+ellen have enough Superhero Town(TM) Experience that they don’t even have to finish a thought out loud they just bolt for the car
this is the second off-color dad joke joker’s made. i’m gonna keep a mental tally on that one, clown boy.
did ellen memorize a map or something
bruce can. can you quit it with the batarangs that punch through E V E R Y T H I N G you’re gonna hurt somebody
the monochrome skies are a little odd, but i think they’re an homage to BTAS’ style (fun fact: BTAS backgrounds were drawn/painted onto black paper, even the day scenes. that’s why the series seemed dark all the time - it literally, visually was so.)
some fun attention to detail(TM) continued:
pre-Joker Gas: blue eyes
post-Joker Gas: Red-ish eyes
Want to watch? KISSCARTOON (well, KimCartoon) LINK
Also some fun stuff I discovered in cast+crew:
Rino Romano as Bruce Wayne, Alastair Duncan as Alfred, Kevin Michael Richardson as The Joker, Ming-Na Wen as Detective Ellen Yin!?
Adam freakin’ West has a cameo in half a dozen episodes as the mayor!
I can’t figure out where I know Rino Romano from (interestingly, he did a bit part on JCA - in fact, the vast majority of his roles appear to be bit parts, so it’s interesting that he was chosen to play the main character, and he does it well)
wait, hold up, he did a character in Men In Black The Animated series anD ALSO WAS THE ENGLISH VOICE OF TUXEDO MASK WHAT
(also peter parker in the late 90s-early 200s tv show and, of all things, darth revan voice option in kotor 1)
oh my god Kevin Michael Richardson was Captain Gantu in the Lilo and Stitch TV series what??? he sounds nothing like that as Joker what kinda range???
he’s sheriff blubbs in GF what
i went waaaaay down the list because holy mother of voice credits, batman! and you know what? i finally figured out why his Joker voice sounds familiar.
Skulker. From Danny Phantom. That’s why.
#elk text#12th#July#2017#July 12th 2017#it got long#The Batman#Elk rewatches The Batman#Elk Loves The Batman#i was wondering why all the inmates joker released were white and....#remembered what happens to mentally ill poc who HAVEN'T committed any crimes#wait static shock too???#jesus KMR is there anything you HAVEN'T done at least one voice in????#good god the range#i am truly having a blast scrolling down this imdb page

The Justice Department’s inspector general releases his hotly anticipated report; Saudi coalitions fight for control in Yemen.
Brooks Kraft LLC/Corbis via Getty Images
Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz has released a hotly anticipated report, in which he found that there was little political bias in the way former FBI Director James Comey handled the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails during the 2016 presidential election. [Reuters / Sarah N. Lynch and Mark Hosenball]
The IG report did find that Comey “deviated” from governmental procedures when he informed Congress — and the nation — that he was reopening the investigation into Clinton’s emails just 11 days before the election. This harmed the FBI’s perception of being fair and impartial, according to the report. [Bloomberg / Chris Strohm]
Comey responded in a tweet today, saying he stands by the decision he made in 2016, and adding he believes it was made in the face of “unprecedented” circumstances. [The Hill / Jacqueline Thomsen]
The report also addresses the controversial texts between two FBI officials, Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, that said “we’ll stop” Trump from becoming president. The inspector general acknowledged that despite political bias and inappropriate behavior on the part of the FBI agents, the texts did not have a direct impact on any department investigation. [Daily Beast / Betsy Woodruff]
There’s certainly the possibility that President Trump will attempt to “exploit” the report in order to undermine the FBI, the Justice Department, and Mueller’s work in the Russia investigation. But really, it’s a case of apples to oranges, because the IG report investigated Comey’s conduct that ended up harming Clinton, not Trump. [Vox / Andrew Prokop]
The report “found no evidence” that the Justice Department wrongly let Clinton off the hook. Nevertheless, Trump could also try to use the report as ammunition against his political enemies (he’s already tweeted about it). [NYT / Matt Apuzzo, Nicholas Fandos, and Charlie Savage]

Yemen began an assault against Iran-backed Houthi rebels to retake the port city of Hodeidah on Wednesday. It’s being led by a Saudi Arabian coalition, and Yemen anticipates the battle could be completed within a week. [AP / Jon Gambrell]
The port is essential in combating Yemen’s dire famine. The Saudis would theoretically open the port if they prevail, giving 20 million Yemenis their only access to food and humanitarian aid in the rebel-controlled territory. [The Hill / Simon Henderson]
Yemen has been torn apart by a bitter civil war that began in 2014 and escalated in 2015. So far, 10,000 civilians have been killed in the fighting. More than 8 million civilians are on “the brink of starvation,” and another 22 million have been deprived necessary humanitarian aid. [BBC]
The United Nations fears this latest attack on the port city could kill up to 250,000 civilians. [Guardian / Patrick Wintour]
The US has a vested interest in seeing Iran’s scope of influence in the Middle East wane. However, the US military has “restricted its support” of the coalition due to concerns of civilian casualties. [WSJ / Asa Fitch]
Steve Bannon is vying for a comeback via bitcoin. Bitcoin, on the other hand, is not vying for a comeback via Bannon. [The Verge / Shannon Liao]
With New York’s best and brightest in the room, Ivana Trump spent her Tuesday night boozing and schmoozing at the Plaza Hotel in an effort to promote her latest sponsorship, “the Italiano Diet.” [The Atlantic / Elaina Plott]
A girl in Minnesota got her head in a truck’s exhaust pipe and had to be rescued by firefighters (she’s fine!). The video someone took of the incident (because of course) now has more than 1.3 million views. [Vice / Drew Schwartz]
San Fransisco has elected its first black female mayor, London Breed. The election comes amid a wave of black women coming into power in 2018. [HuffPost / Sara Boboltz]
“White Americans, who ‘seem lost,’ are searching for something important: how to see ourselves without turning awful in the process.” [Emily Bazelon in “White People Are Noticing Something New: Their Own Whiteness” / New York Times Magazine]

#gallery-0-10 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-10 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-10 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-10 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
