Skyborne Cerberus armed UAV completes airborne shooting tests

Skyborne Technologies, based in Australia, said it completed a demonstration of "first of type" aerial shooting with its Cerberus unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) armed with 5 40 mm rounds.

The demonstration was held in Australia with the approvals of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA). The pass/test site was a Queensland rural property, on which Skyborne partially rented, to support ongoing testing and development.

Skyborne first demonstrated the prototype of the Cerberus GL UAV (with a 40 mm single-shot grenade) in Georgia, USA, near Fort Benning, for a U.S. Army Demonstration Program called the Army Expeditionary Warrior Experiment in December 2019. The demonstration was the first to fly and fire with the armed UAV tri-tiltrotor during an aerial shooting activity for a U.S. Army audience.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic paralyzed all the company's plans to return to the US in 2020 to continue testing and demonstrations to customers. This forced the company to face regulatory obstacles to conduct aerial shooting tests in Australia. The company first contacted the civil aviation authority (CASA) in June 2020 to propose airfare activity on private land for research and development purposes. Seventeen months later, in October 2021, Skyborne held the "first of its kind" airfare demonstration.

Cerberus is a tactical-level aerial fire support UAV, designed to be the first man-packable multiple shooting UAV on the market. It provides operators with up to 30 minutes of flight resistance, 5 40 mm shots (selectable) and VTOL launch features. Cerberus GLH also has daytime/night optical systems, AI processing and an integrated target laser rangefinder for precise targeting.

“This is the first time the 40 mm HAVOC launcher has been fired in flight. The Skyborne team present at the demonstration was absolutely ecstatic with the result. Cerberus GLH's retreat response was an improvement of order of magnitude over the old single-shot variant demonstrated in the US in 2019," said Dr. Michael Creagh, CEO of Skyborne.
