"London-based designer Micaella Pedros has found a way to give discarded plastic bottles purpose and she demonstrates it in her project called “Joining Bottles”.
Both materials, wood and plastic bottles, are widely abundant in cities and other places. There are lying there as waste, waiting to be reclaimed by people. Joining Bottles seeks to contribute to new beliefs based on what we, as individuals and communities, can do with what is available to us.
In the project, Pedros demonstrates how she collects discarded bottles from the streets, and, by applying heat, turns them into a wood bonding material, with which she creates new functional structures, such as tables or stools. What a beautiful way to make plastic bottles that we call “trash” useful again!"

Both materials, wood and plastic bottles, are widely abundant in cities and other places. There are lying there as waste, waiting to be reclaimed by people. Joining Bottles seeks to contribute to new beliefs based on what we, as individuals and communities, can do with what is available to us. In some countries, this project can make a real difference, promoting the collect of plastic bottles and wood waste, and helping people to empower themselves.
The technique can adapt itself to different shapes which allows to compose structures from any appropriate found materials. The different types of wood and plastic bottles available are dictating the final aspect and composition of the work. In that sense, a unique conversation is engaged within each piece. It creates more space for randomness and spontaneity, in other words, for human attributes in the creative process.

For research I've looked at theorist and stage designer Adolphe Appia and product designer Marcella Pedros.
ADOLPHE APPIA Adolphe Appia was the first person to really intrigue me, and the fact that a lot of his work is theory based there isn’t too much visual influence from him which makes it a better challenge to work with as well as not being influenced by his style. There’s something poetic about how Appia describes the use of light and shadow that really intrigued me to get to know more about him and the importance of light within design. He talks about movement and the rhythmic aspects of light.

As designers in this modern world we need to challenge our way of thinking and how we create—platforms are constantly changing and the way we approach design has become a melting-pot of mediums. A multidisciplinary approach is key, finding solutions in various areas and working across mediums. Social design is key. What I like about Micaella’s approach to design is that she’s using two resources which are abundant in the cities—which have become waste—and transforming it to a new object. Filling the gap What I like about Micaella’s approach to design, especially with 'Joining Bottles', is that she’s using two resources which are abundant in the cities— becoming wasteful and harmful for the environment—and transforming it to a new object. Her design process is important for todays society in how we revalue objects and turn something old in to something new. It’s clear we have an overflow of objects so why not make something from what you have rather than constantly making something new?

D’autres moyens...
