The ESC In My WIPs

One thing that doesn't feel so secret on this page, aside from the fact I'm a Eurovision fan, is that I'm a writer. Of course, being a writer who loves music leads to me making soundtracks for everything that I write. And since I joined the fandom, I've been putting some songs in my playlist! And now, I'll share which ones have "made the cut" so far.

To begin, these are official by me (official being that the chapter is done and has a home. So even though I have a piece for Belgium's 2024 entry, the piece does not have a home yet so we won't be counting it). Also not counting non-ESC songs by ESC artists (sorry). I don’t think they did, there’s actually a fair amount of signaling that year, you can check on my 2016 LARRY tag. They were even still running the bears at the beginning of the year. But I think it was a very complicated year in general, they were both MIA for a little while after the band and then all the mess with babygate (there was also *a lot* of signaling on that) and by the end of the year, of course, Jay passed away. But still considering everything, I think it was a very active year in that sense. I’m sure you can also find more stuff in my COMMUNICATING tag

I already question the relation between foreigners practices. In fact, there exist books everywhere. But are there a million of editorial design practices or just one practice for a million of spaces ? I tried to figure it out when I was at SPRINT22 — Independent Publishers & Artists' Books Salon in Milano. This fair came from Argentina and presented a large selection of South American publications. If you are curious about it, you can also plan to see approximately the same selection at MIGRA Art Book Fair in march 2023 in Buenos Aires.

Let's relate to what I’m trying to explain. When I was in the place called Spazio Maiocchi, I felt very enthusiastic about all the books, prints and so on… But I was much more surprised about the diversity of editorial approaches. I observed different kinds of textures, compositions, formats, colors. There were many editions from everywhere : Switzerland, Germany, England, Croatia, Italy. Each creation I could see seemed familiar to me even if I had never heard of the publishing house.

Let me talk about one I felt so close to me. Perimeter Editions comes from Melbourne, in Australia, and deals with Photography. The publishing house is focused on collaborating with photographs, artists, curators and writers. They describe themself by saying "(their) publications exhibit a criticality and sensitivity to content and form", surely because it focuses on accurate a link between a textual form and a global shape of the object. To understand what the publishing house mentioned I would like to talk about the publication of Ambient Park by Félicia Atkinson, in August 2017.

To sum up the book, it’s a twenty-five-pages book, a format close to 29.7 x 19 cm and the softcover is bound with saddle stitch - there are just 400 copies.

This editorial project, printed in Australia, relates the collaboration with Shelter Press : the internationally regarded French publishing house founded by musician Félicia Atkinson and designer Bartolomé Samson. I was so amused by the discovery that this book was in fact created not that far from my own place.

To present Shelter Press, they publish books and records. Félicia Atkinson confided that they "decided to create Shelter Press when (they) were in an artist residency in the middle of nowhere where a lot of Amish people were living." That’s why we can observe different landscapes and drawing abstractions on this editorial form. Ambient Park is a project which perfectly depict the interest for different cultural aesthetics : its form is a series of films shot during travels to New Mexico and Arizona overlaid with a collection of crude drawings made in Australia.

To describe the project, I mentioned this sentence from Shelter Press : Ambient Park manifests in "Working to navigate a path across real lands". By learning about the collaborative process between these publishers, coming from far away places, we realize that at times it can be possible to converge on the same issues in order to achieve a common project. And sometimes, our own design practice is inspired and influenced by those cultural productions. I mean, every editorial project is mostly a association of what the designer was inspired by. So, when you decide to know more about a book from an unknown place, you discover that it is finally create not that far from you. So there exist many editorial position statements, interpretations and applications of graphic tools in many spaces around the world. It means that it’s possible to discover a project close to your expectations, even if it come from far away.

MIA Photo Fair 2017, il ritorno: autori e immagini

Un primo commento su MIA Photo Fair 2017 [http://2016.miafair.it/chi-siamo/mia-fair] ha preso in considerazione opere e autori premiati dalle varie giurie istituite per conto di vari sponsor. L'interesse della fiera non può esaurirsi in quelle. Qui la visita virtuale si completa con una selezione personale fra quanto d'altro è parso apprezzabile, suggestivo, talvolta nuovo, inquadrabile nella categoria fotografia-verità ed eventualmente fotografia-oltre, senza scadere nella fotografia-sensazione. Non ci si stupisca se nel commentare la principale fiera-mercato italiana della fotografia d'arte si prende in considerazione l'arte piuttosto che il mercato, e si assume un punto di vista definito e chiaro, come quello espresso da Robert Adams nei suoi saggi Beauty in Photography e Truth and Landscape (Nota 1): arte è verità e bellezza.

R. Adams parlando delle fotografie di paesaggio, chiarisce che quelle  possono presentare tre verità: geografica, autobiografica, metaforica. Presi insieme, questi tre tipi di verità si rafforzano a vicenda e sono il primo elemento dell'opera d'arte. (Nota 2). è chiaro che R. Adams parla di Verità: sostanziali, non di  puro realismo (e non solo "vera fotografia") e che sostituendo geografica con un termine appropriato, ciò vale per qualsiasi genere di fotografia: di strada, ritratto, reportage, moda ..... e non solo per la fotografia in senso canonico, ma anche per quella oltre., affiancata da altri mezzi. Sempre per R. Adams (forse l'ultimo dei Maestri della fotografia moderna a assegnare come fine dell'arte la bellezza) la Bellezza rivela la forma. O viceversa, è la forma il secondo elemento dell'opera d'arte, che rivela la bellezza? La struttura di tutta un'immagine può suggerire la forma che è bellezza. Solo immagini che sembrano ottenute con facilità riescono a convincerci che la bellezza è un fatto comune. Ma la bellezza non è compiuta se la fotografia non trasmette le "essenziali verità definitive".

Ovviamente questi requisiti possono essere soddisfatti in varia misura - diciamo, da 0 a 100.  Ai lettori verificare se le immagini qui presentate e, in generale l'opera degli autori citati, agevolmente visitabile nei rispettivi siti, concretizzi, e in che misura, arte.

Tipico genere di fotografia-verità dovrebbe essere il ritratto. Non erano una novità (anni '80-'90) i ritratti di attrici e modelle di Piero Gemelli, attraenti, ricercatissimi e tecnicamente perfetti. Ma più aderenza alle tre verità: fisiognomica, autobiografica (riflesso della personalità e della storia dell'autore) e metaforica (il significato, al di là della personalità del soggetto) e minor carica di artificio ho trovato nei ritratti di Giuseppe Mastromatteo, esposti in uno stand sapientemente articolato: incisivi, piuttosto bruschi, un po' in stile "Neue Sachlichkeit" o, piuttosto, Lucian Freud (che da quella discende). Altro suo tema i nudi, di linee più sinuose, con alcune elaborazioni "oltre" fatte con grazia.

Più diretto impegno umanistico - molta "verità" con forma appropriata - era presente nel progetto (2016) di Margherita Lazzati, che presentava personaggi "ospiti" in qualche modo della casa di reclusione di Milano - Opera.

Al servizio della metafora invece si ponevano i ritratti, soprattutto fanciulle, di Gabriele Corni, in apparenza parzialmente immersi in acqua (la serie porta il titolo Apnea). Di alcuni gli indumenti apparivano realmente bagnati e persino fluttuanti le chiome - ma non galleggianti, come avverrebbe in realtà. (Figura 3). La lattiginosità del "liquido"  e la mancanza di riflessi in superficie, assieme a preoccupazioni "umanitarie" inducono a pensare a un sapiente post-trattamento inteso a ribadire il "concetto" di isolamento e sospensione della personalità. Era necessario? a parer mio poco aggiunge all'espressività dei bravi soggetti, partecipi del "concetto".

Attenendoci ancora a R. Adams, l'arte del paesaggio ha il fine di riscoprire e valorizzare il dove noi (noi umani) ci troviamo. In questo senso ci soccorreva in pieno Gabriele Basilico, con immagini di soggetti architettonici meno correnti nella sua produzione più nota (Figura 4).

Ma erano presenti non pochi altri autori operanti nell'ambito delle finalità enunciate da R. Adams sia nel bianco e nero - come l'onnipresente M. Kenna e suoi epigoni - sia nel colore. Basti una piccola varietà di esempi..

Le vedute aree non sono una novità. Ma le riprese perfettamente zenitali di Kacper Kovalski, che occhieggiano all'astrazione e, nevosi, al monocromatismo (Figura 6 - Sin) possono fornire preziosi spunti ai freschi adepti dei droni fotografici. A sua volta Niccolò Aiazzi nelle sue immagini di alpinismo ((Figura 6 - Ds), riesce a ridarci la stupefazione delle incisioni che illustravano i racconti dei primi esploratori anglo - germanici delle Alpi.

Settimio Benedusi per una volta non si è applicato alle sue consuete foto di nudo e glamour professionali e pubblicitarie, per raccogliere in singole stampe gruppi di cupe immagini seriali di tempestose atmosfere marine (http://www.miafair.it/milano/artisti/settimio-benedusi/).

Nel genere Paesaggio (sottogenere: Urbano) si collocano anche quelle fotografie di architetture che non si limitano a ricavarne effetti grafici  ormai abusati e banali, ma, pur tralasciando l'insieme ed evidenziando dettagli strutturali e ornamentali, integrano spazi, ambienti, volumi ed effetti chiaroscurali, come alcune delle immagini di Antonella Sacconi (che sono più che Nude Forme come invece propone il titolo della serie, )http://www.antonellasacconi.it).

Il prolifico Richard Heeps (n. 1956), presentava diverse serie delle sue immagini di "micro-topografia", dettagli di luoghi, ambienti e situazioni, foto a colori forti un po' sulla traccia aperta da Stephen Shore ed altri americani. Significativi i titoli: "Posti ordinari" (Figura 7) o anche "La rovina dell'uomo" (a quel che appare, donne e motori!). Sono troppo frequenti gli episodi di violazione della proprietà artistica altrui su immagini  che vengono usate e abusate trasformandole poco o tanto con nuove "interpretazioni", pratica che è stata volgarizzata da Warhol (una delle ragioni per cui non sono fra quelli che lo osannano) e che solo in rari casi viene sanzionata legalmente. Non è il caso di chi opera per dare dignità e nuova vita a fotografie non autoriali, "photos trouvées". Marco Picchio nel progetto Giorni Molteplici, seleziona negativi di immagini di cronaca giacenti negli archivi di testate giornalistiche e ne attualizza il significato accostando alle stampe didascalie, spesso pungenti.

Esempi di fotografia "olltre" sono già stati presentati fra le opere premiate. Un ultimo esempio (anch'esso candidato al premio BNL) sfrutta immagini fotografiche in una forma che richiama quella di antichi trittici religiosi, suggerita dall'aspetto di un cranio di balena esposto in un museo marino nordico.

Infine, è doveroso menzionare  le immagini "oltre" del maestro (e felice patriarca) del genere, Nino Migliori, presenti al MIA, ma troppo poche, in aggiunta all'onnipresente Tuffatore.

I love everything on this list but this one is probably my favourite out of all of them.

A modern day adaptation of Leroux that’s scarily accurate. Christine is a radio intern who suddenly gets a big break out of nowhere, but she keeps vanishing and is talking about an Angel... There are so many conflicting feelings with the E/C in this and I think it’s one of the best fics for really capturing the complexity and depth of that relationship. WITH the novel’s R/C ending, but in the bittersweet and touching way Leroux did it.

My Dead Wife by BleedingHeartConservative

You know how Erik talks about Christine being his “living wife”? In some translations he goes “not like the dead ones” and this is a fantastic backstory delving into that. Non historical Persia in the vein of Kay, where Erik is given a wife as a gift. I read this whenever I want to be very sad.

Dreaming in Place of Reality by Smaug the Writing Dragon

Surprise, it’s a Cherik fic! Pre miniseries, Gerard pays a visit to his not-son on a completely regular non-birthday date and Erik muses about the nature of dreams. Why yes, he’s fully aware he’ll never have the chance to fall in love with a beautiful woman, but he can dream about taking walks with her in the sunlight and holding hands. It absolutely makes the series that much more painful so I highly recommend.

One Day in the Light by Quiet2885

Probably the most popular one on this list, as this author has received a lot of well deserved acclaim for their more recent works, but I really do think this fic deserves more love. Erik gets one day with a regular face and is determined to spend as much time as he can with Christine making the most out of every moment. An open E/C ending and a very intriguing concept, as I think we should see more of Erik with a normal face trying to adjust to the world.

Peaches by Broken-Vow

E/C family fluff! Modern AU Christine and Erik are married and weren’t expecting to have kids, but their daughter Mia comes along and they learn how to be parents together! Tracks their lives from Mia being born to her heading off to college. I said fluff but I lied, there’s also a fair bit of angst and this fic does not downplay the difficulties this family faces and needs to overcome, it’s very compelling and a fantastic read.

je suis quelqu’un de très simple par rapport à mes cheveux : je les coupe de quelques centimètres tous les quelques mois et je les garde toujours à une longueur entre le menton et les épaules

mais le choix du coiffeur est toujours très compliqué parce qu’autant la coupe j n’ai aucun problème et mon slogan est “des cheveux ça repousse” autant j’ai toujours envie de pleurer lorsque je sors à cause de la coiffure

et après avoir alterné entre le coiffeur de ma mère (bien mais cher), la coiffeuse de mon père (bien mais chiante), et l’école de coiffure à Liverpool (bien et pas cher mais lent et terrifiant), j’ai du choisir un salon cette semaine à Bruxelles parce que mes cheveux étaient vraiment trop longs

j’avais trouvé un truc super - prix raisonnable, hyper bonnes notes, beaucoup d’avis,... je réserve pour samedi aprem

je pars toute guillerette à l’idée d’abandonner ma lourde chevelure mais dès l’arrivée je commence à être perplexe parce que c’était vraiment très bordélique et il n’y avait que 2 coiffeuses criant dans une autre langue et habillées en mini-robes. un peu surprenant mais on s’adapte.

je m’installe au shampooing, elle me demande, “c’est tes cheveux naturels ?” je réponds oui, elle dit à sa collègue, “regarde comme c’est beau ! j’aime tellement les cheveux blonds naturels.” j’ai les cheveux brun foncé??? genre même l’été je ne suis pas chatain clair. encore plus perplexe. 

elle m’arrache les oreilles à chaque passage de ses doigts puis m'écrase les oreilles avec la serviette. bon. 

j’arrive à la station coupe. je lui explique que je veux une coupe droite de quelques centimètres et je lui montre une photo de moi en 2017 comme référence. elle regarde à peine la photo et me dit “je sais ce que tu veux” ah!

elle commence à me couper les cheveux à la vitesse de l’éclair en interjetant avec quelques compliments en russe. je suis apparement une красивая девушка, une jolie jeune fille. merci. elle finit la coupe et je ne suis toujours pas entièrement convaincue que c’était droit. ils sont de toute façon bouclés donc on ne voit pas grand chose donc c’est po grave

j’avais à la base réserver pour avoir un brushing mais je ne voulais pas avoir les cheveux lisses donc je lui demande séchage normal. sa collègue lui suggère la “boule du sèche-cheveux”. je propose le mot “diffuseur.” c’était en effet ça. sauf que ma coiffeuse ne savait pas l’utiliser donc on a attendu que la collègue finisse de faire ses ongles pour qu’elle vienne me sécher les cheveux. caramba. 

et là. l’horreur. non seulement elle m’avait mis une mousse dans les cheveux et donc ils étaient croustillants, mais en plus elle m’avait donné beaucoup beaucoup beaucoup de volume. je déteste ça. je paye, ils ne prenaient pas vraiment la carte mais on a réussi à s’arranger, je pars.

mamma mia. j’avais beaucoup de baies vitrées sur mon chemin du retour et j’avais littéralement envie de pleurer à chaque fois. c’était terrible je ressemblais à un CLOWN et je sortais ce soir là donc je devais trouver une solution. logiquement, me relaver les cheveux était le moyen le plus simple. sauf que : j’avais lavé mes cheveux le matin chez moi, puis la coiffeuse me les avait lavés et c’était déjà la 3ème fois de la semaine que je lavais 2 fois mes cheveux en une journée. j’ai donc choisi d’être raisonnable et je les ai lissé en 10 minutes avec mon vieux lisseur 

mais enfin!!!! ce matin, je me suis levée, je suis allée prendre ma douche et.... PERFECTION. j’ai littéralement passé la journée à me regarder dans les miroirs de la maison, i am obsessed. le théorème coiffure moche = coupe parfaite continue d’être correct.

What’s up my fandom friends?  Back at ya with another Six Sentence Sunday.  On a personal note,  I’ve made another big decision in my life. After 12 years of sheer madness and insanity at my current job, I’m putting out my feelers for trying to find another job.

It’s time.  For those of you that really know me personally, work/life balance is something the company I work for has never done well since I’ve been there.  It’s been very few paychecks where I didn’t have mandatory overtime pay on it. Points where I stayed to help the team, because I was a part of it.  I think the last time I can honestly say work/life balance was okay it was in 2015-2017.  I’ve come to realize that what I’ve been settling for is not what I should be.  So if you’re not happy where you are, that’s a temporary situation.  I’m happier just knowing I’m looking to finally fix it, and have a lead on a job because I’m being referred in by a friend.

Mia’s 🌎 World: Chapter 14

Spring Break.  Jaiden was excited. Life couldn’t be more perfect. He was back together with Mia, and everything felt so right.  He had planned to take Mia to Wrightsville Beach for a few days and meet up with Leo, Hana, and the gang.  

The Brooks’ family was a Jeep family.  His dad had a white wrangler.  His mom after the Green Meanie finally died, purchased a hunter green Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo X.  Jaiden had a candy apple red soft top rubicon that was his pride and joy.  It was a high school graduation gift after everything had happened to him, and still managed to graduate third in his class of 1000 students.

One of the things Jaiden took pride in was taking care of his vehicle.  He knew how to do minor work on it, and weekly hand washed Rubi.   Jaiden had just completed putting his first layer of wax on his candy apple red jeep, and it was glistening in the sun.

Jason whistled when he walked out of the house seeing Jaiden’s vehicle sparkling in the sunlight, looking like it was fresh off the store room floor.  

“Why’d you wash Rubi?”

“I have a date with Mia, and tomorrow we’re going to Wrightsville.  Rubi has to look hot for the trip.  I might even take the top off before we leave.”

“I don’t think you want to do that.”  

“Why not?”  

As if foreshadowing the events to come, Jaiden sneezed.  

“Geez, where did that come from?”

“You’ll see,”  Jason chuckled.  “Have fun, and be safe.  

He had taken the soft top off and drove over to Mia’s house.

Leo watched Riley feed Liam a few spoonfuls of ice cream.  The way his brother looked at her;  he had fallen in love at the end of his life.  Leo left them alone for a bit.

"You're doing good."

"I can feel them."

"Who?"

"My parents. They are waiting for me."

"You can't talk like that."

"It's true. They're here, and I'm not afraid but…."

"But what?"

"Part of me doesn't want to go. Because of you Riley."

"What do you mean?"

"Can I ask you something and you be honest with me?"

"Yes."

"Do you promise?"

"Yes."

"If I wasn't sick, and you were single, Riley would things be different between us? Would you and I have had a real chance?"

She bit her lip.

"Tell me the truth. You promised."

"Why does it matter? We can't change things Liam."

"Because I need to know."

"Liam…."

"Tell me…"

She took Liam's hand.

"You know the answer."

"I need to hear you say it."

She rested her forehead on his.

She was so close to him he could smell the scent of the coconut shampoo she used in her hair.

"Yes. It would have been different."

Leo watched them from the door. Somehow, Riley had fallen for him too. It just wasn't fair. His brother had always wanted someone special to spend his life with, and he finally found her, but it was too late for them.

“Good evening ladies. Looks like you are participating in our contest.”  

“Hell yes we are, and we’re going to win it.”

“I hear ya!  It will be a few minutes before your table is ready.”  

The restaurant was really quirky and eclectic.  The music playing and a very urban and uptempo beat.

“I really like the vibe here.”  Jili commented.

A waitress walked by carrying a pink smoking drink.  

“I want one of those.”  Bebe was excited.

They were finally to their table and were able to order drinks.

“I want one of those pink smoky drinks.”

“Each drink in our smoke line has a different flavor profile, which one would you like?”

“Pink alcohol?”

The waitress explained each flavor profile of the smoke cocktails line then looked at Bebe expectantly.

“Yeah….I still want Pink.”

“And I want Green.”  

The restaurant was packed. The waitress came back with their drinks rather quickly, pouring the last element into their drinks causing them to smoke.  Bebe and Jili clinked glasses and took a sip of their cocktails.

how do you think eveline's aging is going to work out? She is likely less than 10 years old in terms of how longs she's existed (24x as fast means she could have hit 10 in under a year and ouch that must have been painful considering how achy normal growing pains are, poor girl, not to mention the entire old woman thing) but she was born before 2010 according to the wiki? so at least chronologically 7 by the time of biohazard, and it's reasonable she'll only actually be 10 by village

so once she gets her medicine is she just going to be ten biologically until she's ten chronologically and start growing again? are her meds going to be manipulated, like every once and a while she goes off them until she's the age she's supposed to be? or perhaps a different dosage? maybe Eveline has to consciously decides to age and it can be a character growth moment? or is she forever a little girl which Eveline might enjoy for a while but I expect she'll start to hate pretty quickly

hhhhh okay so I really want to answer all this bc you're asking all the right questions anon but truthfully it's just--

I'll give you what I can, anon, mostly in terms of things the existing chapters have already laid down and/or things that concern game canon:

Eveline in this fic is less than 10yrs old. The info on her being created around or before 2010 is newer and kind of shaky (it's from a Japanese-language guidebook that lacks an official translation into English or even a fan translation in the wiki, and is such a newly-included source Eveline's possible DOB literally changed from 'before 2014' to 'before 2010' in the wiki after I'd already started posting this fic). The same guidebook also placed Mia's work at the Connections as starting around 2010, but given canon seems to imply she was part of the core E-001 team (the photos of her with younger Eveline, with Miranda, etc), I'm opting to interpret that she was involved in Eveline's embryonic development, even if not her 'conception', and came onto the team after the D-series experiments and early in the stages of the E-series project.

So, Eveline was born somewhere in the first few months of Mia's work with the Connections in my fic, putting her DOB either in 2010, or in late 2009 with us pushing Mia's work back w/the Connections a little earlier. Because I genuinely believe aging a child at 24x their natural rate, when going through the rapid bodily development a child goes through, would kill them even in dumb pseudo-science (I know Eveline survives it in canon, but she's going through growth from a 10yr old to an adult, which is still less extreme than the growth from newborn to 10yr old in terms of literal mass increase), I loosely wrote into chapter 2 that Eveline's natural growth rate was sped up to about 3 times the average from birth to childhood, since I imagine managing her chemicals/medications could allow the Connections to at least somewhat manage her growth rate. That means she went from a newborn to physically 10 in about 3yrs--still physically traumatic, but much less likely to kill her from sheer physical stress. She was "10" for a little over a year before the tanker incident, making her in reality somewhere around 4 and a half. She remained with the Bakers for a little under 3 years, staying "10" for around two of those before her rapid aging kicked in, making her physically somewhere between 80-90 by 2017 current events.

Basically, Eveline is around or a little over 7yrs old right now, with half her life spent at age "10" or older. Mentally, she's more advanced than the average 7yr old for sure, but lacks a lot of the emotional maturity of a 10yr old and in many ways has a toddler's conception of justice, fairness, empathy, etc.

...As for how Eveline will age from here on out once she has medication to return her to her child form...well, that really is spoilers, anon. It really, really is.

Isabelle Huppert: The Most Dangerous Actress in European Cinema

At 66 years old, Isabelle Huppert has had a long, celebrated career and is regarded in the highest echelon of French actors. Among actresses, Isabelle Huppert holds the record for César Award nominations (France’s Oscar award), with a whopping sixteen. She has also had twenty of her films in competition at Cannes, more than any other actress. And she is among just four actresses who have won the Best Actress prize at Cannes twice.

Not a bad track record.

Though she has appeared in a few American productions over the years, including “Heaven’s Gate” (1980), “The Bedroom Window” (1987) and “I Heart Huckabees” (2004), her best films have all been European.

Extraordinary women marked by tragedy and surrounded by mystery — these are Huppert's trademark cinematic roles. The films of Isabelle Huppert tend to be filled with sociopaths, self-mutilators, and murderers.

There was the jealous postmaster in “La Cérémonie,” the gun-toting young bride in “Coup de Torchon,” and the prostitute who poisons her family in “Violette Nozière. “The Piano Teacher,” “Elle” and “Greta” would make a crazy triple feature. Overall Isabelle Huppert, one of the iconic dames of French cinema, has garnered a reputation for being cold and steely. The French actress, now in her mid-60s, consistently chooses roles that are morally complex and sometimes hard to watch. And yet we can’t bring ourselves to look away.

Susan Sontag, who once called Huppert “a total artist,” said she had never met “an actor more intelligent, or a person more intelligent among actors.”

Huppert has been called France’s Meryl Streep for her technical skill, but for all her shape-shifting, Streep’s strongest women have never gone so dark as the roles Huppert has played.

Huppert expresses the moods and mental state of her characters with precision and great sensitivity. Her seemingly expressionless face and sparing facial expressions have become something of a trademark.

Fiction has a tendency to inflate things, she said once in an interview with The Financial Times in July 2017. "But when I look at people on the street, I find that most of them are pretty empty in their eyes. I have to do even less." To observe, she has been taught, you have to take away, not add something.

Isabelle was the youngest of five children, born in Paris to an engineer father and a mother who taught English. Her mother is credited with spotting her talent early on, and encouraging her to develop it. She was already well on her way as a teenager, getting acting jobs while studying at the National Conservatory of Dramatic Art in Paris.

Huppert’s résumé is remarkable over five decades: Just over 140 films since her debut in 1972, for many of cinema’s most audacious visionaries, including Claude Chabrol, Claire Denis, Curtis Hanson, Hal Hartley and François Ozon.

In “Things to Come,” a wistful, funny drama by the French director Mia Hansen-Love. She plays Nathalie, a Parisian philosophy teacher whose husband leaves her for a younger woman, whose mother dies, whose publisher won’t reissue her book — and yet, who finds unexpected freedom in all of these losses. Nathalie heads toward the light and Michèle toward the dark, but both roles showcase Huppert’s great ability to derive power from vulnerability.

What directors loved about Huppert — and she prides herself on being an auteur’s actor — was her ability to convey moral complexity in the most unique ways.

Working with such auteur directors, Huppert can inhabit extreme characters — "survivors who can be victims and rebels simultaneously," says the actress. "My films give these women a voice. Because even though they live on the edges of society, they are there: women who live brutal lives. It's a brutality that they themselves never sought out," Huppert told Zeit Magazine.

Paul Verhoeven who directed her in “Elle” described Huppert as a “pure Brechtian actor,” in that she puts distance between herself and the audience, without trying to seduce it or seek its sympathy. 

The actress is notorious for her illegibility - her almost Bressonian lack of expression, and the profound unrest she’s able to convey from behind the stillness of her freckled resting face. Pauline Kael, the famous film critic, once complained that “when [Huppert] has an orgasm, it barely ruffles her blank surface.” If Kael had lived to see “Abuse of Weakness,” “Elle,” or “I Heart Huckabees,” perhaps she would have come to appreciate how the stillness of Huppert’s unbeatable poker face allows her to normalize even the strangest and most perverse of characters; to make it seem as though any of their behaviors, no matter how unusual or demented, are as natural to them as we are to ourselves.

It’s a quality that European directors and audiences have embraced, but which can seem more foreign to Americans. Huppert loves American cinema, but she also knows her sensibility is distinctly French.

Huppert is known for her privacy and reserve - she generally doesn’t talk to the press about anything other than her films - and if there’s a connection between her autobiography and the roles she chooses, that’s something that only she knows.

Aware of her own enigmatic appeal, she has no qualms about exploiting it. She has even less desire to charm, although her formidable impassivity sometimes betrays a hint of vulnerability. Not that she will let the viewer get too close, however, as she is forever intent on remaining “more like a question mark than a statement”.

Isabelle Huppert is not just courageous when it comes to choosing film roles and artistic collaborators. She is fearless, and such is her integrity that we trust her instincts and follow wherever she leads. That’s what makes her the most dangerous actress of our time.

Below is a top ten list of Isabelle Huppert films. They are not in order nor are they her very best. There are simply too many films in her body of work that would deserve equal consideration. Instead the list is made up of films that given an introduction to her wide ranging talents.

1. The Lace Maker 1977

Isabelle Huppert won the most promising newcomer award for her graceful, guileless performance as Pomme in Claude Goretta’s masterly adaptation of a Pascal Lainé novel, which took its title from a Vermeer painting. Whether doing her chores at a Parisian beauty salon, playing blindman’s buff on a Cabourg clifftop with dashing Sorbonne student Yves Beneyton, trying to eat an apple without disturbing his reading or choking over dinner with his snooty parents, Huppert is mesmerising.

2. Violette Nozière 1978

The first of her seven collaborations with Claude Chabrol earned Huppert the best actress prize at Cannes. She was 25 when she played the demure schoolgirl who shocked 1930s Paris when details of her double life as a prostitute emerged following the poisoning of her father. Violette claimed he had abused her, but Chabrol thinks otherwise and exploits Huppert’s genius for switching between fragility and cruelty to counter the surrealist myth that the teenage parricide was an anti-bourgeois icon.

Huppert embodies this character that’s chiefly concerned with finding love. She walks the streets at night, characteristically promiscuous, but don’t call her a prostitute. She’d refute. Throughout the film, she gives more money to the men then vice versa. At night, when she leaves her quiet bourgeois home, and finds a man to accompany her, she looks unusually bothered. The film is sometimes maddeningly ambiguous but perhaps that’s the point - Chabrol and Huppert want us to feel mixed about her.

Violette is a woman with an air of mystery around her. She’s precocious but not as clever as she thinks. Huppert gazes and kisses her own mirror reflection. She writes fictional love letters to herself as well. Huppert quietly stresses the motivation behind the character: desperate to find someone to love, or else she’ll have to love herself. Except, she can’t even love herself because she feels stifled by her home life. And as ever with narcissism, there are dangerous consequences.

3. La Cérémonie 1995

“Chabrol only ever cast me as fairly ordinary characters,” Huppert once revealed. “They just have rather particular destinies.” While she would go on to embody Chabrolian womanhood (“not victims, not fighters, somewhere in between”) in Rien ne va plus (1997), Merci pour le chocolat (2000) and Comedy of Power (2006), she gave her finest performance for him in this seething adaptation of Ruth Rendell’s A Judgement in Stone.

An upper-class family warns their meek maid (Sandrine Bonnaire) about the local mail lady, Jeanne (Isabelle Huppert). They become friends regardless. Huppert plays Jeanne as kooky, comic, and rebellious. We gradually find out more cryptic background on her character, which gives her spirited attitude a darker edge. She’s either heartbroken or heartless. Huppert portrays a character with so many contradictory traits without ever making it feel false.

Huppert performs the role cunningly. Jeanne is energised like a child, but she’s smart enough to know how to win over the maid. She’s a little silly - when she enters the family’s home while they’re away, she touches everything. Huppert balances all of this next to the near-mute Bonnaire, both slowly exacting their revenge against the upper class. Chabrol’s trademark: clash of the classes.

Huppert thoroughly deserved her first César.

In 2014, Huppert performed Jean Genet’s play The Maids with Cate Blanchett. The play was inspired, as was La Cérémonie, on the same true-story about the Papin sisters.

4. The Piano Teacher 2001

The Piano Teacher is an elegantly made film about the deranged endeavors of love. Huppert plays a buttoned-up music instructor, Erika, who attracts the eyes of an unassuming man half her age. She still lives with her mother and there’s a danger that lurks behind her carefully placed gaze. She’s been sexually repressed for such a long time; her repression and self-hatred has slowly evolved into masochism. It drives her to haunt peep shows, spy on copulating couples and mutilate her own genitals. This disturbing film really made an impact world wide. 

Nobody said this film was an easy watch!

Haneke gives the spectator all the intricacies of the concept of perversion inserted in Huppert’s character of Erika, a successful piano teacher and an apparently impeccable social life. Well, that’s what Erika keeps on the surface.

Huppert declared the second of her four collaborations with Haneke to be the film she had long been searching for.

5. 8 Women 2002

There’s no validity in the truism that Huppert doesn’t do comedy. In fact she proved she could both dance and sing (the plaintive ‘Message personnel’ is a career highlight) in François Ozon’s chic 1950s musical whodunit. Sporting a tight bun, a buttoned-up twin-set, pursed red lips and butterfly spectacles, Huppert invokes the spirit of legendary farceur Louis de Funès as Catherine Deneuve’s argumentative sister. She gives an indelible display of neurotic, spinsterly bitchiness that is simultaneously piteous and hilarious.

6. Elle 2016

A successful woman enters a real ordeal after being raped by a stranger in her home. Powerful, ‘Elle’ unravels all the nuances of a character’s life inserted into a completely incongruous personal, social and psychological reality. Here, the character will demonstrate how her attitude towards the world follows a sociopathic pattern of acting, despising any form of emotional attachment and using other individuals solely to satisfy her most primitive instincts. The film earned her an Oscar nod for Best Actress, which was fabulous but also made me wonder what took so long. Certainly she’s turned out enough superb performances over her nearly five decade career to have earned this recognition sooner.

7. Coup de Torchon 1981

Having survived a seven-month stint in Montana for Michael Cimino’s Heaven’s Gate(1980), Huppert ventured to Saint-Louis in Senegal for Bertrand Tavernier’s Oscar-nominated transposition of Jim Thompson’s pulp novel, Pop. 1280, from a small Texan town in the 1910s to west Africa on the eve of the Second World War. Although Pierre-William Glenn’s sun-scorched Steadicam imagery seems antithetical, this is a darkly droll noir that sees Huppert in an unusually skittish mood, as the abused colonial wife who forges an unlikely alliance with Philippe Noiret’s pathetic rogue police chief, who is humiliated by everyone around him, and suddenly wants a clean slate in life - but resorts to drastic means to do so.

8. Merci pour le chocolat 2000

The film follows the nuances of a French upper class family, exploring the destructive ways in which each member acts on the world. Directed by Claude Chabrol, ‘Merci pour le Chocolat’ is an interesting film, bringing a more cadenced plot that values studying each meander of the behavior of its central characters.

The movie is set in Lausanne, and that Swiss location, having an ambient sense of buttoned-up severity and menace, is an appropriate setting with a Nabokovian mien for this horrid tale of sociopathy.

Huppert dominates the film with the slightly frigid poise of a great dancer who has retired to become an exacting teacher. She plays Mika, a woman who presides wearily and almost negligently over the prosperous chocolate business built up by her late father. But however disengaged she is in the boardroom, in the kitchen she loves chocolate with a passion - concocting various types of drinking chocolate, using subtly differing recipes, with fanatical and murderous care.

There is something fascinating about Huppert's face here. In repose, it has a kind of unsettling serenity, the serenity of a cunning and covert predator who has already decided on an unspeakable course of action.

9. La Séparation 1994

Isabelle Huppert and Daniel Auteuil play a couple on the verge of a separation. The relationship’s mainstay is their child, one-year-old Loulou. Autueil gets most of the film’s focus, but he’s essentially a sitting duck, nervously shifting between passive-aggressive contempt and hopeful endearment, as he prepares for the outcome of his girlfriend’s infidelity. He says, “Never two without three.” This could be the quote-totem of the film.

The director smartly leaves the interloping lover out of the film (he’s never seen or even named). Instead, we study Auteuil’s growing impatience and Huppert’s pivotal decision. She adds a lot of depth to a character that could’ve just been the unsympathetic partner of the cuckold.

Huppert gives her character integrity and even though she’s ostensibly guilty, she never comes off as purely selfish. She’s troubled, as well, by their situation - we sense her detachment not due to ego but because she’s boggled in trying to assess the right mode of conduct. Huppert and Auteuil have great chemistry, changing gears effortlessly between vitriol and affection.

Huppert’s distinctive talent for suppressing suffering is readily evident in her slowly disintegrating relationship with Daniel Auteuil, as Huppert imparts chilling intimacy to a withdrawn hand, an unanswering gaze, a treacherous silence and a careless word in conveying the pain of falling out of love.

10. Madame Bovary 1991

Not her greatest film but certainly one of the most accessible for anyone not familiar with the talents of Huppert. Based on Gustave Flaubert’s fabulous novel, the film brings the exacerbated trajectory of a young girl who has a highly romanticised view of the world and craves beauty, wealth, passion, as well as high society. It is the disparity between these romantic ideals and the realities of her country life that drive most of the novel, leading her into two affairs and to accrue an insurmountable amount of debt that eventually leads to her suicide.

This adaptation of ‘Madame Bovary’ is perhaps the best of any adaptation to date. Claude Chabrol manages to capture even the most emblematic nuances of Flaubert’s book, elevating a unique atmosphere for the unfolding of scenes. 

However, the main point of distinction between this work and the others is the presence of Isabelle Huppert as protagonist, delivering a powerful and visceral performance from the first to the last scene.
