Honestly, the real story behind the Cat Person film/short story sounds more interesting and chaotic than the movie itself.
So, basically how bad was real life Robert?
The original girlfriend, whom the author based it on, insists he was a decent enough guy, they dated for a few years. She says the bad sex and foul text messages never happened. She remembers him fondly. But acknowledges she was 18 when they started dating and he was 32. (red flag.)
But then the author, who also knew and dated him, paints him out to be a terrible guy, then based the story on the original girlfriend, who is reasonably pissed about it. And the author included every exact detail so everyone in their social circle knew it was about them. But then made up all the nasty stuff..
Original girlfriend says when the story went viral it sent real life Robert into a spiral of depression. He died suddenly in 2021. She never explains why, but the suggestion is suicide.
Creative writing majors be causing all the drama.

Considering a MFA program? Read this first!
I'm all set to graduate from what I believe to be a stellar MFA program on January 17th. Could there really be something I didn't learn? Would prestigious, world-renown faculty really leave something out?
Recently, I came across an article from Writer’s Digest titled “What They Don’t Teach You in MFA Programs: 5 Rules for Writing Stories That Work” by Chris Mooney, a “Bestselling author and creative writing instructor.” I was obviously intrigued because I’m all set to graduate from what I believe to be a stellar MFA program on January 17th. Could there really be something I didn’t learn? Would…

Here's an update on the mental health candle series I have been working on. These are the most recent drafts I've done. They are far different from my first few drafts which were inspired by Mayan textiles. The idea was good, but it was difficult to get to a point where I was happy with the design. After around 8 or 9 drafts, I decided to start over and this is what I came up with. The blue label is what I started with first. I did some custom type for the Claridad logo and paired it with some linework.
In researching Mayan textiles, I learned that the symbol of the sun is a staple within the culture as the sun (and corn) are associated with the birth of humanity. I also found that mountains were important in textile work as they symbolize protection from illness. I wanted to keep these values in my new design which can be seen in the linework. To put my own spin on the sun symbol, I combined it with an eye to symbolize mindfulness.
The background colors of the labels mirror the color of the wax within that candle. This is where my research in Curanderismo came into play. Candles are an important aspect of Curanderismo, and have different meanings based on their color and the patterns created by the melted wax of a lit candle. Light a blue candle for serenity/harmony, a red candle to combat illness, and a green candle for protection against negative forces. The words I chose for each candle are related to these color meanings.
The flowers I chose for each of the candles are all used within Curanderismo to treat Nervios, which is basically a state of stress. I paired the flowers based on how they would look together on each color background.
The next step of this project is making the box that this series of tall candles sits in. I'll be posting an update on my Sobriety Companion App sometime this week along with a digital piece I made for an art history class I'm taking this semester.

all of us who are snobs about Good Novels certainly have a lot to complain about, right? there are SO many widely-loved, widely-read novels that are bad bad bad, & us assholes gotta hear all about them
but
do you know who is really taking a nigh-lethal amount of psychic damage, on the regular, from Mainstream Opinion?
people who like good poems.
i'm so sorry, poetry enjoyers. you deserve so much better than whatever trite hogwash is going viral at any given moment. i hope there's enough good hipster shit getting published somewhere else to staunch your wounds
#i just saw that Joseph Fasano poem that's going around.#i'm not even THAT much of a poetry bitch but when i tell you i cringed with my entire body...#is the columbia mfa program a degree mill or something.#or is this guy just cynically optimizing for virality.#(i don't know jack shit about mfas)

conversations i had at the bar tonight:
nerding out over my favorite book, which also happened to be the guy next to me’s favorite book (that apparently he has been telling people about for YEARS and nobody else has ever read it)
gender politics and microlabels and whether it’s more important to be genuinely trying to be respectful of identity or to be using “correct” language and terms 100% of the time
the decline of young men into alt-right communities and how anger pushes them into isolation and violence
how the guy across from me is building a huge personal library and he has so many books that he can barely even fit them all in his apartment
how trauma and cultural uncertainty shapes writing & the importance of writing hopeful/happy stories
whether the american expectation of monogamy is harmful to relationships and whether it’s more important to be faithful to your long-term partner or to follow new passions
in summary. i fucking love grad school
#this is literally like. 10% of the stuff we even talked about#it’s so amazing to talk to these people they are all so well-read and interesting and like. brilliant#and i’m just Here#mostly kidding. i do think i had some things to contribute#i was the one talking about microlabels and the alt-right pipeline#but still. like.#i’m sitting here like.#i’m somehow in the same program as these people???#i am sitting here with them on a random tuesday night in a minnesota bar?#like the person i was talking to. literally just came back from a trip to alaska to do research for her mystery novel#like WHAT.#that is so cool!!!!!#anyway hopefully yall aren’t sick of me rambling about the mfa program i just.#i love it here soooooooooo much#personal

What's the Newest Trend in Publishing?
There might be something very exciting on the horizon, according to an industry insider… Recently, I received yet another rejection for representation for my completed manuscript, Lightning Strikes. But I’m handling it well (or at least better than expected) for two main reasons: That Lit Hub article by Emily Temple that I wrote about last week clearly states: “If you’re a writer, here’s an…

Project Ideas for SP23
I have some updates for the projects I'm working on now, but I wanted to jot down some topics I would like to tackle next semester before I forget them. I got the inspiration for these ideas from a page I follow on Instagram called crimescenecleaning. It's run by a cleaning company called Spaulding Decon. They clean a lot of hoarder homes and, lately, a lot of overdose deaths.
So first up is a project directed at children or family members of individuals with Hoarding Disorder. I would like to create something to ease the stress of living with a hoarder. I'm not sure what that something could be, but I'm interested in exploring any and all avenues that have even a remote chance of being useful.
Second, I would like to create a care package directed at drug users (casual and/or heavy). Today, a lot of overdoses are unintentional and caused by fentanyl. The fentanyl crisis is getting bigger and bigger by the day and it's something I addressed in the project I did during my first semester of grad school. The problem is becoming so increasingly prevalent that I want to and feel the need to address it again. The drug is highly addictive because of its potency and has been found in heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, and counterfeit pills. The majority of fentanyl overdoses have been unintentional because users were taking either of the above-mentioned substances but they turned out to be laced with fentanyl. I could go on and on about this stuff, but let's get back to the project idea. I want to create a harm-reduction care package for drug users that includes things like fentanyl test strips, wet wipes, clean needles, Narcan, etc. It'd be cool to create an app or something of a life alert that can notify medical professionals of an overdose (for those who are solitary users and have no one to keep them safe). I'm very interested in harm reduction and look forward to investigating more related topics in the future.
