Ter Stegen 9/10, Firpo scores as Barca pick up first road win of the season
Steve Nicol says Lionel Messi alone won’t solve Barcelona’s concerns on the pitch in what is shaping up to be a tight La Liga title race.
With Lionel Messi set to miss more games with a groin injury, the FC crew question if Ernesto Valverde can turn Barca’s fortunes around.
Luis Suarez and Junior Firpo were on target as Barcelona beat Getafe 2-0 on Saturday to pick up their first away win of the season.
Suarez opened the scoring in the first half thanks to good work from goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Summer signing Junior Firpo then added the second after the break with his first goal of the campaign, tapping home after David Soria had saved from Carles Perez.
Clement Lenglet was sent off late on for picking up two yellow cards as Barca held on to the three points to move second in La Liga ahead of the rest of the weekend’s games.
Positives
Barcelona have ended their away-day blues — and with their first clean sheet in the league this season to boot. After four games without a win away from Camp Nou, the victory over Getafe should restore some confidence on their travels.
There was also a glittering performance from Ter Stegen. Not only did the goalkeeper make an important save from Angel Rodriguez when the game was goalless, but he also set up the opening goal. After sweeping up in defence, he picked out a fine pass for Suarez.
Negatives
Barca were already without Lionel Messi and Ansu Fati for the trip to Madrid when, just over an hour before kickoff, they revealed Ousmane Dembele was also sidelined with a thigh problem. It’s the eighth injury he’s suffered since joining the club and leaves them short in attack ahead of upcoming games against Inter Milan and Sevilla.
They’re also short in defence, too. With Samuel Umtiti injured, they will be without the suspended Lenglet against Sevilla next weekend. Jean-Clair Todibo should stand in.
Manager rating out of 10
6 — Two wins in a week will ease the pressure on Ernesto Valverde for now but the performances are still short of what’s expected at Barcelona. His tactical changes ensured his side were able to see the game out in a relatively comfortable fashion.
Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)
GK Marc-Andre ter Stegen, 9 — The goalkeeper’s brilliant display comes amid a debate surrounding who should be Germany’s No.1. Certainly bolstered his case here with his hands and his feet.
DF Sergi Roberto, 6 — Started at right-back for the first time this season and spent a lot of time getting forward. A better fit at full-back than in midfield for this team.
DF Gerard Pique, 8 — His best performance of the season. Was particularly a colossus in the final stages when Barcelona were reduced to 10 men.
DF Clement Lenglet, 4 — Sent off for two bookings and will miss next weekend’s game against Sevilla. The second booking was unnecessary given Barcelona were in control of the game.
DF Junior Firpo, 7 — Scored his first goal for his new club with an easy finish from close range. Also made an important block on Angel in the first half.
MF Sergio Busquets, 6 — Some nice turns on the ball but also played Barca into trouble a couple of times.
Marc-Andre ter Stegen starred with his hands and his feet against Getafe, again proving why he is one of the world’s best goalkeepers.
MF Frenkie de Jong, 6 — Returned to the side after resting in midweek, playing in front of Busquets. Has looked better in a deeper role but rarely disappoints wherever he plays.
MF Arthur, 7 — Strong on the ball and smart in possession. Has made a great start to the new campaign.
FW Carles Perez, 6 — Returned to the team after being dropped in midweek and caused a few problems with his direct runs. His fizzing shot led to Firpo’s goal.
FW Luis Suarez, 6 — A resolute performance after being jeered by his own fans in midweek. Ended a three-game wait for a goal with a lobbed finish in the first half. Came close with a couple of other chances, too, but still looks short of his best form.
FW Antoine Griezmann, 6 — Did a lot of good (linking the play, tracking back, good movement) even if he won’t get the headlines on this occasion.
Substitutes
DF Nelson Semedo, N/R — Replaced Griezmann late on as Barca switched to a 4-4-2 formation for the final stages.
MF Ivan Rakitic, N/R — Came on for Busquets for the final 10 minutes with no noticeable involvement.
DF Jean-Clair Todibo, N/R — Brought on to partner Pique for the final exchanges after Lenglet’s red card.

#2 阿加井秀樹のバルセロナ徹底解説
先日GKDFの紹介をしてきましたが、今回はMF編です。ではさっそく紹介しましょう。
No,4 イヴァン ラキティッチ Ivan Rakitic
Sergio Busquets
Denis Suárez

Yerry Mina impresses in first start but Barcelona struggle
Barcelona failed to break down durable Getafe at Camp Nou and the 0-0 draw means their lead at the top of the table has been cut to seven points after Atletico Madrid beat Malaga on Saturday. The hosts failed to record a shot on target in the first half and, although Yerry Mina and Philippe Coutinho came close after the break, it was not enough to earn three points.
Positives
Mina made his full debut and was impressive at the back; his pairing with Lucas Digne did not result in disaster as Barcelona kept a clean sheet despite missing three first-choice centre-backs. Ousmane Dembele was able to return for his (second) comeback from injury.
Negatives
The team looked uninspired, with Lionel Messi’s form a far cry from the heights he has hit in recent weeks. Motivation may be a problem in games like this; are Barcelona already thinking about their Champions League clashes with Chelsea and the Copa del Rey final?
Manager rating out of 10
6 — Ernesto Valverde threw on Dembele and Andres Iniesta from the bench but his changes did not have the desired effect and neither changed the game
Player ratings (1-10, 10=best; players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)
GK Marc-Andre ter Stegen, 6 — The goalkeeper had little to do, although he displayed excellent technique when he dribbled around a Getafe attacker in the first minute after turning sharply in the box.
DF Sergi Roberto, 6 — He seems to be Valverde’s first-choice right-back and got forward well on a couple of occasions. He also proved reliable at the back against the persistent Amath Ndiaye.
DF Yerry Mina, 7 — In his first start, he was solid and strong in the tackle and did well to block Angel Rodriguez’s strike, which was Getafe’s best chance. At the other end Mina twice came close with headers and was arguably Barcelona’s most dangerous player.
DF Lucas Digne, 6 — The defender was playing out of position at centre-back because Gerard Pique, Thomas Vermaelen and Samuel Umtiti were absent for various reasons. Digne did a solid job with Mina, although on occasion he was unsure of his positioning.
DF Jordi Alba, 6 — Although he usually gets up and down the wing, on this occasion his impact was limited. He still needs to work on his relationship with Coutinho and was more threatening after Iniesta came on.
TBD EPA/ALEJANDRO GARCIA
MF Sergio Busquets, 6 — He wasn’t able to pull the strings in midfield with his usual silky touch and his booking for a cynical foul in the second half means he has been shown eight yellow cards this season in domestic competition.
MF Ivan Rakitic, 7 — Barcelona’s best midfielder, although he did most of his work in defensive areas, dropping in deep frequently between Mina and Digne. His passing was crisp and he helped shuttle the ball forward.
MF Philippe Coutinho, 6 — He could not kick on after scoring his first goal against Valencia. At least he became the first Barcelona player to register a shot on target, although it was weak. He later tested Vicente Guaita from distance before being taken off.
FW Paco Alcacer 5 — The striker’s season appears to have been derailed by the injury he suffered in December, before which he put in a string of good performances. Since returning he has made little impact and, on Sunday, he he offered nothing when stuck on the right.
FW Lionel Messi, 6 — Was at his skilful best against Valencia but it looked as if those Copa del Rey exertions on Thursday took a lot out of him. A couple of nice passes were wasted by his teammates but this was one of Messi’s worst displays on what was his 300th appearance at Camp Nou.
FW Luis Suarez, 6 — Worked hard and “scored” a brilliant volley, although it was correctly disallowed for offside just before half-time. Suarez was constantly harrying the Getafe defence, although his grit and determination did not convert into goals.
Substitutes
MF Andres Iniesta, 6 — One moment of magic saw the midfielder break free in the area but his cross was cut out.
FW Ousmane Dembele, 5 — Made his return after a hamstring problem but, although at first it seemed like his pace was going to be useful, his decision making and passing accuracy were off. Needs time to find form after a stop-start season.
MF Paulinho, NR — Had eight minutes to make an impact but was barely able to get involved as Getafe closed ranks.

Luis Suarez looks lost in 4/10 showing as Barca’s road woes continue in loss at Granada
For the second consecutive match, Luis Suarez was exceedingly poor for Barcelona.
Barcelona’s terrible away form continued as they were condemned to a shock defeat by Granada on Saturday, going down 2-0 at the Estadio Nuevo Los Carmenes. Ramon Azeez opened the scoring inside two minutes for Granada and Alvaro Vadillo added the second after the break as the newly promoted side moved top of La Liga — at least until Sevilla play Real Madrid on Sunday.
Positives
If you’re really pushing it, Frenkie de Jong looked OK and Lionel Messi came through another 45 minutes. The Argentine forward, just back from a calf injury, came on at half-time with Barca trailing by a goal.
Negatives
Barcelona have done well at home this season but they’ve been unrecognisable on the road. Defeat in the opening game of the season at Athletic Bilbao was followed by draws at Osasuna and Borussia Dortmund. Now they have a defeat in Granada to add to an unwanted collection.
They’ve also failed to keep a clean sheet in La Liga this season, conceding nine goals in five games.
But the worst thing about this loss was how poor they were. They never looked like worrying the home side, with their first shot on target not arriving until the final 10 minutes via Messi. Luis Suarez looked lost, Sergi Roberto out of place and there seemed to be a lack of understanding between the players — not something you often say about Barca sides. As Suarez told Movistar after the game, this was a worrying defeat.
Manager rating out of 10
3 — Ernesto Valverde seems to be committed to certain players when perhaps he should be looking at other options. His changes, as obvious as they perhaps were, wreaked of desperation.
– ESPN La Liga fantasy: Sign up now! – When does the transfer window reopen?
Player ratings (1-10; 10=best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)
GK Marc-Andre ter Stegen, 6 — Could do little about either of the two goals but did make an uncharacteristic error in the second half, fumbling a cross. Luckily he managed to gather the ball before it crossed the line.
DF Nelson Semedo, 5 — Should have tracked Azeez to the far post for the opening goal but was no worse than the majority of his teammates. Once again forced to play at right- and left-back.
DF Gerard Pique, 5 — Didn’t do a lot wrong individually but Barca are not defending well as a collective at the moment.
DF Clement Lenglet, 5 — Looked a little short of confidence, hesitating when the ball was in the air and not taking control like he does when at his best.
DF Junior Firpo, 4 — Made a disastrous start on his full debut for the club, losing possession inside two minutes and gifting Granada a goal. Didn’t let that affect him too much but the damage was already done and he was hooked at the break.
MF Frenkie de Jong, 6 — Played at the base of Barca’s midfield and at times seemed to be the only player running. Drove with the ball, held it well, but too often lacked options around him.
MF Sergi Roberto, 4 — Played the first half in midfield and the second half at right-back as Valverde shuffled his deck. Despite his origins as a midfielder and his preference to play through the middle, he looks much more suited to a full-back role at Barca.
MF Ivan Rakitic, 5 — The Croatian made his first start of the season but struggled to impose himself on the game. Taken off after an hour.
FW Carles Perez, 5 — Substituted at half-time but more because of his name, you’d imagine, than his performance. Was no worse than anyone else in the first 45 minutes, even if he was unable to deliver in the final third.
FW Luis Suarez, 4 — Maybe it’s because it’s still early in the season. Maybe it’s because he’s just recovered from a calf injury. But, for the second game running, Suarez was really bad.
FW Antoine Griezmann, 5 — Being played in unnatural positions (in the first half pegged to the left flank and in the second half on the right) but didn’t do nearly enough when he was on the ball. He did work hard off the ball again.
Substitutes
FW Lionel Messi, 6 — Had Barcelona’s only shot but, still not fully fit, was unable to save his side off the bench.
FW Ansu Fati, 6 — The 16-year-old did more than most, setting up Messi’s chance and causing a few problems down the right with his pace and directness.
MF Arturo Vidal, 4 — Within minutes of coming on he had handled the ball and conceded a penalty.

Griezmann scores brilliant double in 9/10 showing as Barca trounce Betis
Antoine Griezmann scored twice to lead Barcelona to a 5-2 win over Real Betis.
BARCELONA — Antoine Griezmann scored twice as Barcelona bounced back from an opening day defeat to Athletic Bilbao by thumping Real Betis 5-2 at Camp Nou on Sunday.
Griezmann opened his account for his new club just before half-time after Nabil Fekir had given Betis a surprise lead. The former Atletico Madrid star added his second after the break, curling home from the corner of the box.
Barca B forward Carles Perez added the third with a neat finish from 18 yards and Jordi Alba scored the fourth after a clever pass from Sergio Busquets. Substitute Arturo Vidal then made it five before Loren Moron grabbed a late consolation for the visitors.
Positives
Coach Ernesto Valverde will draw a long list of positives from Barca’s first win of the season. Not only was this one of the most impressive performances from his side in a long while, but there were also plenty of individual highlights.
Griezmann’s off the mark for the club — the second goal was a beauty — and he also set up Vidal’s strike. With Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez injured, that can only be good news moving forward. In that sense, Perez’s performance also caught the eye. The youngster showed plenty of character and capped his performance with a deserved goal.
There was also a nice moment late on as Ansu Fati came on for his debut. The attacker is only 16 years and 298 days old and becomes the second-youngest player to ever represent Barca in La Liga.
Negatives
There was a 10-minute spell around the Betis goal when Barca looked nervy. Busquets’ intercepted pass, which Rafinha was slow to react to, led to Fekir’s goal and a series of errors followed. There was also some sloppiness in front of goal in the first half, with Rafinha especially guilty of missing chances, but they rectified that after the break.
– When is the Champions League group-stage draw? – ESPN La Liga fantasy: Sign up now!
Manager rating out of 10
7 — Valverde’s shown he’s open to change in the early weeks of the season. That’s been forced in part by injuries in attack but he’s also made some big decisions in midfield, with Ivan Rakitic left on the bench two weeks running. Here, his side played some brilliant football at times — even with Messi and Suarez watching from the stands.
Player ratings (1-10; 10=best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)
GK Marc-Andre ter Stegen, 6 — Beaten by two absolutely stunning finishes from Fekir and Loren.
DF Nelson Semedo, 7 — Was a menace in attack, linking well with Sergi Roberto and Perez ahead of him.
DF Gerard Pique, 6 — The defender made his 500th appearance for the club but struggled at times in the first half. Gave away a dangerous free kick with a foul on Loren.
DF Clement Lenglet, 6 — Like Pique, was caught out of position at times, but got away with it with some cynical fouling.
DF Jordi Alba, 7 — Scored a good goal and linked well in the final third with Griezmann and, surprisingly, Busquets, who got forward more than usual.
MF Sergio Busquets, 7 — Returned to the lineup after not playing in the loss to Athletic. His stray pass led to Betis’ opening goal but he improved after that. Played some nice passes and set up Alba’s goal.
MF Sergi Roberto, 7 — Produced a lovely cross for Griezmann’s first goal. Looks like he’s going to be given plenty of time to settle into a midfield role this season.
MF Frenkie de Jong, 6 — Played on the left of the midfield three, but seemed to spend too much time out towards the touchline, which doesn’t suit him.
FW Carles Perez, 8 — A lively performance that suggests there is no reason Valverde can’t continue to rely on him while Messi, Suarez and Ousmane Dembele are out. He’s prepared to take on players, shows for the ball and has bundles of character.
FW Antoine Griezmann, 9 — Good and bad moments early on gave way to a brilliant second-half performance. Broke his duck for the club before the break and added a stunning second in the second half in a display that brought Camp Nou to its feet.
FW Rafinha, 6 — Some nice touches but his night will be remembered for two big misses. The first was somehow deflected wide by Sidnei and he didn’t even make contact with the ball at the far post for the second.
Substitutes
FW Arturo Vidal, 6 — Came on for his first appearance of the season and netted a goal.
FW Ansu Fati, N/R — A night the teenager will never forget. Could have been even better, too, if his fizzed effort didn’t fly inches wide.
FW Junior Firpo, N/R — The summer signing made his debut for Barca against his former side.
