Description from Brookfield Zoo Chicago:
The newest pups in the Brookfield Zoo Chicago pack, Molly and Sierra, are now nearly 4 months old, getting bigger, and more playful as well! Check out our video to see them interacting with their dad, Amigo.
Nine pups were born to Vivilette and Amigo this past spring. These are the two remaining (both girls). The rest were moved from the Zoo to the southwest US and introduced to the wild. Here's an extract from that story from the Zoo:
Seven Mexican wolf pups born at Brookfield Zoo Chicago on April 27 were placed into two wild Mexican wolf dens in New Mexico on May 7 and 8 as part of the Mexican Wolf Recovery Program. The robust multi-agency conservation effort of fostering zoo-born pups in wild dens has been a successful strategy that continues to bolster the subspecies’ population in the southwest United States—Arizona and New Mexico—as well as in Mexico. At 10 days old, the pups—six males and one female—were fed and kept warm by two animal care specialists and a veterinary technician from Brookfield Zoo Chicago during their flight to New Mexico. Air transportation was provided courtesy of LightHawk Conservation Flying, a nonprofit organization that partners pilots with organizations to help transfer endangered species to new homes among other conservation projects. Upon arrival, members of the Mexican Wolf Interagency Field Team stealthily covered the pups in the scent of the similarly aged wild pups already in the den to ensure they all smelled the same. Before being placed back in the den, all the pups were swabbed for DNA and given studbook numbers. The biologists then monitored the radio-collared mothers to verify that each one returned to her den and successfully accepted the zoo-born pups as her own. The proven process is known as fostering—transferring zoo-born wolf pups into the dens of wild packs to improve the genetic diversity of the wild population. This year marked a milestone in the Program’s wolf pup fostering—a pup born at another facility was the 100th to be placed with a wild pack since fostering began in 2014.

HOLY FUCK, WHY 😢
The fact that Mexican wolves are critically endangered really breaks my heart. This unique animal, descendants of the very first migrations of wolves into north america from eurasia, that once lived across northern mexico and the southwestern usa, is mostly gone. This is their current range- there are only 241 wild wolves in the usa, 45 in mexico
And in usa they are still systematically killed to appease ranchers, in 2018-2019 the feds killed an entire pack of mexican wolves 🤡

From the Center for Biological Diversity:
The Center and allies are urging the Fish and Wildlife Service to resume releasing captive-born Mexican gray wolf pairs together with their pups into Arizona and New Mexico.
Due to livestock industry pressure, the Service stopped releasing wolves almost entirely after 2006. When wolves’ genetic diversity collapsed, the agency resumed releases in 2016, but only of captive-born pups — alone — into wild wolves’ dens. Only 24 of the 99 pups released without parents from 2016 through 2023 were seen alive again.
“Keeping families intact as they transition to living in the wild is key to saving Mexican wolves from extinction,” said the Center’s Michael Robinson.

I was fortunate to recently visit a wolf conservation center that breeds and releases wolves back into the wild. I thought of you and your Hunter analyses while taking these pictures:
These are Mexican Gray Wolves, and they nearly went extinct at a low of only 13 individuals, 7 of which weren't genetically related. Hunting, trapping, and poisoning were responsible for the drastic decline. Through a partnership with the USA and Mexico governments, the 7 unrelated wolves were bred in captivity and reintroduced into the wild.
Captive breeding programs are still ongoing, with pups fostered into wild dens to improve the genetic diversity of wild packs. Wild Mexican Gray Wolves now number at 250+ individuals, with 300+ individuals in captivity.
Several of the captive wolves must remain in captivity to prevent inbreeding in wild populations, since so many of their siblings have been released into the wild.
The captive wolves are kept as wild as possible (but with the benefits of vaccinations and other health interventions). At some of the captive breeding centers, a few wolves live in areas accessible to visitor viewing. Devoted staff and volunteers raise awareness for this keystone species.
The road to recovery wasn't easy for the Mexican Gray Wolf, and they're not off the endangered species list yet. They still face many challenges in the wild, including illegal hunting. But thanks to a lot of hard work, careful management, and growing public awareness, there is hope. Their numbers are steadily growing, and wolf packs are slowly reclaiming their historic range in Northern Mexico and the US Southwest.
The important things (and sometimes even just survival) aren't always easy, but they're worth it. I hope you keep hanging in there. Like the Mexican Gray Wolf, the world is a better place with you in it.
Bonus: Northwestern Gray Wolves, including a blond wolf (unfortunately not named Hunter) in the back.
Oh wow, beautiful. Thanks so much for thinking of me and sharing all this

I’m not sure how reliably I’ll be able to keep up with it, but I’ve been wanting to start posting weekly or monthly Good News compilations, with a focus on ecology but also some health and human rights type stuff. I’ll try to keep the sources recent (like from within the last week or month, whichever it happens to be), but sometimes original dates are hard to find. Also, all credit for images and written material can be found at the source linked; I don’t claim credit for anything but curating.
Anyway, here’s some good news from the first week of March!
1. Mexican Wolf Population Grows for Eighth Consecutive Year
““In total, 99 pups carefully selected for their genetic value have been placed in 40 wild dens since 2016, and some of these fosters have produced litters of their own. While recovery is in the future, examining the last decade of data certainly provides optimism that recovery will be achieved.””
2. “Remarkable achievement:” Victoria solar farm reaches full power ahead of schedule
“The 130MW Glenrowan solar farm in Victoria has knocked out another milestone, reaching full power and completing final grid connection testing just months after achieving first generation in late November.”
3. UTEP scientists capture first known photographs of tropical bird long thought lost
“The yellow-crested helmetshrike is a rare bird species endemic to Africa that had been listed as “lost” by the American Bird Conservancy when it hadn’t been seen in nearly two decades. Until now.”
4. France Protects Abortion as a 'Guaranteed Freedom' in Constitution
“[A]t a special congress in Versailles, France’s parliament voted by an overwhelming majority to add the freedom to have an abortion to the country’s constitution. Though abortion has been legal in France since 1975, the historic move aims to establish a safeguard in the face of global attacks on abortion access and sexual and reproductive health rights.”
5. [Fish & Wildlife] Service Approves Conservation Agreement for Six Aquatic Species in the Trinity River Basin
“Besides conserving the six species in the CCAA, activities implemented in this agreement will also improve the water quality and natural flows of rivers for the benefit of rural and urban communities dependent on these water sources.”
6. Reforestation offset the effects of global warming in the southeastern United States
“In America’s southeast, except for most of Florida and Virginia, “temperatures have flatlined, or even cooled,” due to reforestation, even as most of the world has grown warmer, reports The Guardian.”
7. Places across the U.S. are testing no-strings cash as part of the social safety net
“Cash aid without conditions was considered a radical idea before the pandemic. But early results from a program in Stockton, Calif., showed promise. Then interest exploded after it became clear how much COVID stimulus checks and emergency rental payments had helped people. The U.S. Census Bureau found that an expanded child tax credit cut child poverty in half.”
8. The Road to Recovery for the Florida Golden Aster: Why We Should Care
“After a five-year review conducted in 2009 recommended reclassifying the species to threatened, the Florida golden aster was proposed for removal from the Federal List of Endangered and Threatened Plants due to recovery in June 2021, indicating the threats to the species had been reduced or eliminated.”
9. A smart molecule beats the mutation behind most pancreatic cancer
“Researchers have designed a candidate drug that could help make pancreatic cancer, which is almost always fatal, a treatable, perhaps even curable, condition.”
10. Nurses’ union at Austin’s Ascension Seton Medical Center ratifies historic first contract
“The contract, which NNOC said in a news release was “overwhelmingly” voted through by the union, includes provisions the union believes will improve patient care and retention of nurses.”
This and future editions will also be going up on my new Ko-fi, where you can support my art and get doodled phone wallpapers! EDIT: Actually, I can't find any indication that curating links like this is allowed on Ko-fi, so to play it safe I'll stick to just posting here on Tumblr. BUT, you can still support me over on Ko-fi if you want to see my Good News compilations continue!
